Ascalon. 1 energy will never matter. Ascalon also covers the damage reduction, so there you go.

Normally, you get the helm that increases your weapon skill or sometimes strength or tactics, and take the boots that do damage reduction. Some people take the lieutenant's helm (Henge) because it is awesome.

Ascalon if it's your only damage reducing piece.
Otherwise Gladiator.
Otherwise Gladiator.

If your only choices are between Gladiators or Ascalon, then it depends on whether or not you have an armor with inbuilt absorption - like another piece of Ascalon armor or Knight's armor, not one with an Absorption rune). If you have one of those, then the Ascalon helm is unnecessary. If not, then go with Ascalon.
However, there are other helms too that you might want to switch to, like Rico said. Reducing the length of hexes by half ala the Lieutenant's Helm works wonders in hex-heavy areas, and +1 weapon helms are a must if you want to get the most out of your weapon. If you switch between helms then you'll want the armor-absorption part to be the boots or gloves, so Gladiator wins out in terms of stats. Gladiator's is still as ugly as hell, though.
