It's recently come to my attention that there is a Guild Wars Special Edition released with a 72-page artbook, and I wonder if anyone knows the difference between this 72-page artbook and the 128-page hardcover artbook that came with Collector's Edition, asking on behalf of someone who wants to get his hands on an artbook.

Yes, they are different, the artbook is a lot smaller for the Special Edition though. But has different artwork. A lot of artwork from Sorrow's Furnace.

Wow, that's really scummy of arena.net, I mean I know companies are in it to make money, but there is a limit to how much you can resonably milk the consumer. If you really wanted both, you'd have to end up buying two copies of the same game. That is, if they still make the collector's edition, I haven't seen it.

For shame.

I don't see it as overly scummy, it's no different than the movie industry with 5 different dvd releases of the same movie, for example Sin City, 4+ initial releases with the only differences being full screen/wide screen and cover box art on AUg 16. Now we have the recut, extended, unrated version released 1 week ago.

Perhaps you've been desensitized by the overly consumerist attitude sweeping the world, but the movie and recording industries are greed personified.

Yes they are, but that was my point exactly, having a new book in a new copy of the game is no different than what the movies do, but I think waiting 8-9 months rather than 3 isn't as bad.
