The Thing I Would like To See Most: Fishing
3 pages • Page 1

Hi, i want to see some more Environmet.
Fishing is a nice idee, and where are the Rabbits in Pre-Searing ? And the many other Creatures ?
It would be nice to do something without slashing Charr´s. Mining, Fishing, Hunting etc. Oh...btw. We need Profession...
This has far more Potential
.
Lets give the Charakters a real life !

No wonder this section is called the madhouse.
I already feel a bout of insanity coming on..
As for crafting professions, they go against the entire idea of Guild Wars. If you like hacking at wood for 40 hours before you can make a starter staff, this probably isn't the game for you. I don't wish to be harsh, but that will always be the truth. This game is based on eliminating grind, not increasing it to gargantuan proportions. Lumberjacking for five days, picking herbs for a week, mixing potions for a month, and/or mining ores for a year would constitute as.. well.. incredibly, incredibly awful grind.
Suggestions are one thing, but changing the whole basis and foundation of the game to be like the hundreds of other repetitive, grind-based games out there? No.

Ah, no...i dont want to hack Tree´s and Wood´s for a Staff. But why i can´t go mining instead of killing monster´s to see if she carrying some steel ?
And with something like this the game could have an own Trade-Environment
Ok...i see no one else is thinking so...

then let us going to chop of some Charr Heads

Anyway, I think that some of these "extra jobs" could be good, but it will only encourage botters, and even if it doesn't, people will start mining or something constantly, and then complain the game is boring.
Lets take the example of mining again. Instead of going to a mine and then sitting there for six hours to get Steel, they could make a quest. Scattered around the world could be three or four mines, and when there you can do a quest. Maybe fight your way through the mine, and there are a few different paths. Down each one is something to mine, and when you reach it you get some random amount of that item. Where each ore is located should be randomly changed, and the number of times you can do this per day should be severely limited (maybe twice). In this way, mining is just like regular fighting, except it ensures you will get some kind of metal.
However, this still has that hint of grind to it, and most likely ArenaNet will just ignore these extra occupations. Let the Dwarves mine, go kill something.

These take away hours of your time. Hours I say. Come on think about it. Like what 5 BWE? Now times that by 1.5 hours each. Then times that with the amount of people dancing around in LA alone. Wow, grind-based fest right there. NERF EMOTES.

I like the fishing-idea, but it should be more like an emote-action. This way you can stand in a river - D'Alessios Seaboard has some nice shores - and pretend to fish.
From my experience playing FFXI, I know I hated wasting gil and many hours to try my hand at crafting (I did cooking), however when I DID have the materials, money, and when I already had the skills, I admit it was fun to sit around and have my character make bait for fishing, or little cakes and juice for the fun of it (well, they helped me gain MP/energy too, but mostly I did it for the fun of it lol, so I could offer cakes and juice to people).
If there could be some way to implement crafting in a way that didn't require "40 hours of lumbering", etc., then that would be awesome. There will be times when I, and others, will need something to do besides killing and salvaging items.
Example, those red iris flowers that are laid out everywhere in pre-seared Ascalon -- we could have various flowers, and maybe herbs, just scattered -- which could be used for random quest-like things, collectors, etc. (ie, giving the flowers to Gwen). However, maybe they could also serve a purpose and we could mash them together to create dyes.
Another idea would be so that crafting wouldn't be the only way to get the best items in the game. Perhaps crafting could be just to create supplementary, optional items for the game:
Cooking -- to create Red-Bull-like energy drinks to boost health and/or energy temporarily, for 60 seconds or so. Other foods/drinks/medicines could be used for healing effects (remove poison), and adding other enchantments, temporarily.
Metalworking (or similar) -- to create miscellaneous items like jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, etc.) which would have no stat boosts, etc (except maybe an Energy+3 like those Focus items), but were mainly for looks, as people have been wanting more customizability with their character.
Things like this would be fun to have, but wouldn't be required to enjoy everything that Guild Wars is about - they could just be little extra tidbits on the side.

This is good idea, there would have to be a better reason to go mining than just cause you want to sit there for hours. Maybe for fishing there would be a poor guy who is hungry and looking for someone to help him get food. Or the king is in town and you need to catch a big fish and beat it to death.

1. No weapons in town. In EQ people complained that characters should be able to sheath their weapons, now in GW we're getting just the opposite request. I'm not playing GW for the fashion show, gearquest aspect.
2. No eating, drinking, etc in game. Say it with me: Guild Wars is NOT an immersive environment! I absolutely love the gameplay, but I don't want to worry about not having enough water/food. That's what real life is for! For those of you that argue, "But my warrior Slayer McKillsalot is a hard drinker! That's what I roleplay him as!" - Don't get me wrong, I like roleplay too, but I don't think you really add anything to your character by having him swill a beer in game.
3. Tradeskills = timesink = I would rather be doing real things with my time than making fake stuff in game. When playing, I want to play - i.e. kill stuff, complete quests and missions - not Macrame
Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but please remember the difference between suggestions for making Guild Wars a better game AND making Guild Wars A DIFFERENT GAME.
Thanks, and you may now return to your regularly scheduled gibberish

perhaps a happy medium could be that you can buy boats (or as a quest/way to get to new lands to continue the story in later chapters you get a boat) and can encounter some kind of pirates, huge sea monsters and anything else you can think that would be good out at sea. This keeps with the combat theme of guild wars, but also opens up extra 'world' and allows people to appreciate the water. Heck they could even add in dynamic storms and the like so that the water could really look amazing with huge waves.

I agree that crafting should be left out. At least for the most part. Fishing, cooking, mining, it's all useless in this game! Okay, having the material would help you build armor and what not, I understand that. However, this is a fighting game. You're suppose to kill something to get your items. One of the big reasons they DON'T have crafting jobs is because this game is not big on trading. Yes you can do it, and it can even become necessary at times I'm sure, but they don't want the game to revolve around making huge amounts of money to make your character better than everyone else. You're suppose to be a good because of strategy, not because you can afford better equipment than someone else.
Well, crafting could serve as a totally optional element of the game then, just for fun little things to do when you're in town, not in the mood to kill, or to pass the time while you're still waiting for your friends to log on. Just a suggestion.
Anyway I think I read that somewhere that the GW dev are going to have events in the game, so I'm sure that will provide another type of entertainment when you're not in battle.

Well, for one, consumables don't exist in the game, and probably never will. And that alone eliminates a lot of the usefullness of tradeskills. No potions, food, scrolls, or any of that stuff. So if they did have fishing, you could only sell it...It seems kind of pointless to add a lot of the trade skills.
It also seems that ArenaNet is very adamant about NOT adding anything that could lead to some grind. I don't think they even want people to THINK about or have the CHOICE to grind. I can't blame them, they are selling the game as "grindless".

I like the idea of being able to fish, but some sort of complex fishing system with skills and such attached to it really doesn't belong here. I'd just like to have it for the atmosphere. The suggestion of making it an emote so that you could just stand around and pretend to fish while you're afk or something, was a good one.
On that note, I also wouldn't mind seeing other "idle" emotes that you could have your character do while you're away or just sitting around chatting like sharpening a dagger, etc.

Well, guess no liked the fishing idea, lol. yet i do agree that crafting, mining, and anyhitng along those lines should never be in GW. But fishing? come on now, look at those beautiful waters, they should have some purpose, and why not it be fishing. Doesnt have to be to complex, ya buy a pole from a outfitter, ya catch fish that the outfitter buys back. Some fish are more rare then others, being worth more. That way, there is a relaxign way to make some cash, as well as take a break fromt he game without ever leaving it
