My computer buzzes.

Why would my computer's fan start buzzing loudly and stop when I tap it? I've opened it up and there doesn't seem to be any wires out of place/in places where they could get into fans.

Try using a shop vac on the fan and sucking out the dust and dirt. I am talking about the Power Supply fan in the back. I would also check your Vid Card fan...you would be amazed how fast that little bugger gets dirty...I had one so dirty once...that I had to take it out of the case and scrape the dirt out of each fan blade and fin on the thing...

I would do that, but I just did it last week. I don't think it would be that dusty already. Interesting theory, though. I'll have to keep note of what I'm doing when it does that...

The very frequent vibration causes it to buzz. It vibrates because the tower isnt on w/e you have it on completely. The surface must be completely flat or else it will vibrate, thus causing it to buzz. This happens to me to just tap it or touch it and it will stop for a while.

It's on squishy carpet.

Well mine is because of the Dell Dim 5100 case. I ended up putting a big rubber band around the case then wedging a piece of cardboard in the case too...seems to minimize that damn buzzing....
What annoys me is that it will stop after I tap it...then slowly it will come back...then I will realize it again....Grrrr

If its on a squishy surface, then something is most likely loose.

BTW, on the carpet is the last place you want to keep your PC.....well actually its slightly better than the bathtub.
As far as the buzz, make sure everything is tight, if it still buzzes the fan could be out of balance.

The buzzing is caued by your fan bearings being packed with shmegma and thusly being out of balance and causing something to vibrate. Clean fan with small brush or replace.

well everyone says that fan buzzing is due to uneven surfaces, etc etc, but it happened to me and i found out that it was actually the connector (this is a chassis fan) that wasnt tightly held in place and would make the fan buzz if loosened. i just shoved it in a corner of my case where it could stay tight and no more buzzing for me! (except when i shake my desk relatively violently - cept that makes a rattle noise)
