ATI 9600 - Faulty Screen

Hey, well, christmas morning, just opened some prezzies, lol. 1 of them being an ATI Sapphire Radeon 9600 PRO, well.

Dad put it in, correctly put in all, started up Computer, logged in fine to my Desktop, the card had put my resolution to 640xsomething, so whatever, it asked me to change it back and that my graphics weren't to the max (now i had the 9600, obviously better levels to put to) and so I changed my resolution to 1024x768 to what it was previously, then it just rebooted itself, now:

It loads the Windows XP, gets to the login screen, but just has the blue background, no "Welcome" text or login usernames, just the lightblue background, then the monitor will just go grey...nothing appears...

Problem? Help If I need to change some setting before putting the 9600 in, I can put my 9250 back in and change if needed.

Ok, so I put my 9250 back in, installed the latest driver, then put 9600 back in, works fine now.

However, after a few minutes of being logged in, my monitor just shuts of as if it's on standby, goes from green to orange light, but my PC is stil actually on and running...

Any help?

I've tried upping and downing my resolution (within the few minutes before it turns of), it's not making it work.

Also, in the bottom right, of the system tray, there's a number 1 icon with a green box around it and a down arrow and something else. I know it's just a setting I need to change but I need to know what.

Do you have the refresh rate set correctly? I make my WINXP hide the refresh rates that the monitor CAN'T handle so I don't use them by mistake.

OR...your monitor is dying....

Well I know it's not my monitor, as I said before, it's fine with my old 9250 card, so I'm going to really hope your right and I'll put my 9250 back in, change the refresh rate + set it so it hides the refresh rates, then I'll pop my 9600 back in, and hope for the best.

Hmmm... What I suggest that you try to do is boot into Windows' Safe Mode. From there uninstall your current video card driver and delete your video controller from Device Manager. Once you've done that, shutdown the computer and put in the 9600 card.

This way you're sure you'd be starting up the video card with Windows' default set of video drivers. My guess why you're experiencing a problem with the 9600 is it has corrupt drivers or the drivers for the old video card is not compatible with the new one you have. I know if it was a Catalyst video driver you use it should work with all the ATI cards, but hey, it never hurts to try.

Uninstall drivers. Reinstall drivers.

Make sure there is enough power, and that your system can support the card (powerwise, speedwise).

Just ordered a 500w Power Supply, I read your post on the other topic.

And Warrior Dood also said or you I think it needs a 250w min power supply, mines 200w :P

So I ordered a new 500w Power Supply with Dual Fans that come with it.

non-the-less, when installing a new card, do the following :

download the latest drivers for your NEW card to your HD (Catalyst in your case)
dowload Driver Cleaner (http://www.drivercleaner.net)

now shut down the comp, pull out the internet plug, and boot the PC back up (still with your old card in it)

now install Driver Cleaner and run it the way it is explained in the manual, but instead of rebooting after running all the cleaners, simply shut down your PC, take out the old card, put in the new card, boot up windows in safe mode, install the already downloaded drivers for your new card, reboot, plug internet back on.
