I am not sure if this is in the right category, but I thought I would let you guys know that if you are using Norton, some versions will use up your resources and eventually make your computer very slow. On my old computer I used norton for a while and it got very slow. I just thought I would let you guys know this.

hmm...I use Norton Internet Security 2006 and it seems to run fine. Granted I use 4Gb of ram and have a decent speed processor (3.4 650 HT). I do not see any slow downs while running Norton, playing GW and leaving other windows open at the same time.

I think it might just be the older versions of norton, thats why I said "some versions".

Norton 2006 is fine for me, that includes antivirus, systemworks, firewall, and some other minor things. However, Norton is pretty unreliable against spyware and adware (obviously). For that, I use Ad-aware SE.

It is advisable when playing online games to turn off all anti-virus prtection and firewalls for optimun performance!! They drain resources and will create system slowness because of the extra load the cpu most deal with,, Now for newer rigs with 3.2g or higher this is not so much a problem but for older Cpu;s this can be a death BAne to your enjoyment!!

Sp simply go into taskmanager (for those who dont know just hit crtl+alt+delete) this should bring up your task manager under processes tab you will see a list of currently running programs on your machine, here is the meat and potatoes of what your comptuer is currentyl doing.
Now there are critical programs running, so you dont want to just start turning stuff off or you will ruin your computer!! ONly i repeat only turn off proceeses you now what there for, nortons will have something like Nortons.Exe or Nprotect.exe etc.etc. these can be shut off temporaliy thru taskmananger with out doing any real harm to your computer!!!

As an example my rig currently has only 26 processes running when i play GW, thats it typically Computers will have anywhere from 40 to 50+ proceese running at any given time, this will slow your computer down tremendously!!

If your need detailed info plz. visit the420th.com, youll will need to register but they have a wealth of knowledge on this subject!!!

Dual Core processors might very well take care of this problem.

Good point 4runner...
This is why I have what I own....4Gb ram...decent vid card and a 3.4Ghz processor. So I can run things in the back ground. To me that is the point of having a computer is to multi-task. I love running it with many windows open and Alt-Tab-ing between programs...

But I like having Norton up and running even when playing games....especially On-Line games...It is a HOG for resources tho....That I will agree.

Norton caused more problems for me than the viruses themselves. Did bugger all for me, I removed it (Which, by the way is harder to remove than a bloody leech... I've been using sophos recently. It's lovely.

I am not saying that norton is a problem for me, my computer could handle it with no problems. I am just telling people with not so good computers that it will slow down your system.
