The New Interface (Please read this post before posting any reply)

I must admit I too find the new interface a bit distracting. However remember that when they switched from the original interface design to the Factions design it was done in several updates not all at once. I think it’s likely that they will continue to update/tweak the interface until the release of Nightfall. Maybe they will tone it down at some point, or once they have finished updating all of the interface it won’t stand out so much.

Thank you everyone for your signing and your posts, thank you for your offers of solutions even if none of them have worked yet. I hope WE can all find one since I not know that others have problems to. the good news is I can turn my everything off and just sit there chatting with my friend list over the party bar! that makes me feel better.

i am partially colorblind myself... greens look brown depending on the hue... which is kind of nice for that stupid new skillbar thing :P
1/4 of all males are colorblind at least partially... 1/16 of females....
Aside from all that- Everyone will have their own opinions about any kind of cosmetic change....
Im pushing for more customizing options, myself... yeah we can edit the formation of the windows on the screen, but we cant change much else about it...
Even something as simple as a color changer, similar to SNES Final Fantasy...
I already have a hard time reading the chat window, unless my character is facing a wall, or a night sky....
I cant read people if im in the desert for example
I hear ya on the bright light hurts- I have spent a lot of time customizing my Firefox, Win XP Theme, video games like Oblivion, MS Office, etc so that its easier on my eyes.
I personally really like MOST of the new UI look... the black and silver are good for me... but I agree about some of the 'colored' parts... its kind of an assault on my senses.
I used to do drugs when i was a teenager- and i think that contributed to my vision-condition- even 10 years after that was all over with...
OR... I must be getting old too quick.. because I really cant handle loud noises or bright lights without getting a kind of 'anxiety' or something... its hard to explain.
Point is- you arent alone in your issues with the UI changes... I think more poeple are complaining about it than actually like it... so hopefully ANet will tweak it out a little more and save people like us the headache!!!

Well I agree that new interface cna be distracting. Besides noone complained about how it was so what's the reason to change anything. Playing mesmer I've noticed its harder for me to distinct skills quickly to choose which one to interrupt.
Making us able to choose skin would be best solution.

I wanted to know if anyone else was as disappointed in the appearance and lack of function of the new interface.
I find the reduced heigth of each characters name in the Party Roster makes it much more difficult to quickly react when casting spells on party members; making it difficult to monk. Each characters health is so close to one another after the update, it's difficult to quickly differntiate between different characters.
In addition, the multi-colored bars for the Skill Monitor and Skill Warmup are distracting and the font appearing in the health and energy bars are thinner and more difficult to read at a glance.
The GW crew appears to working more toward fashion at the expense of function.
A simple solution: put an option under F11 to use the "Classic" interface.
Please reply on the fansites (I'm going to copy and paste this on every fansite I can find) if you agree, since GW support doesn't want to address the issue themselves (I was told to post my concerns on the fansites by support).

I already have a thread about this on this page but i also agree that the new UI sucks and since some people do like it make it an option under F11.

There are some features about the new Interface's look that I like. The party bar window is definitely NOT one of them. The look of the thing is kinda hard on the eyes. The first think I thought when I saw that was that it's gonna suck playing a monk with that mess.
I do like the overall sharper, crisper look and the new purple color for in the Attributes / Factions / Titles window

The Titles purple bars also have low contrast. I cannot see them without changing contrast settings either.

I honestly liked the new UI yesterday when I was playing with my E/Mo. Then today I hopped on my A/R that is set up for interrupts. All I can say is bleh. I don't mind the other changes, but the casting bars jack with my eyes when I'm trying to watch them. And when you are using an interrupt toon that is all you do.
I hope ANet has the heart to do something for those of us that don't like parts or all of the new UI. I for one wouldn't mind if they let us choose which version we wanted to use. It's not like any one version gives a distinct advantage over another, so I think it wouldn't be to hard to ask.

You will get used to it.
Besides, I agree that the other was sorta boring. I like all the new visual improvements, exept the purplish bars for factions points and titles. I hate purple. Please get a new, GOOD, color. Anything but black or purple please! (black just won't look right behind the faction points and the title things, at least in my opinion.)

I feel for you Jenias. I have no disabilities that put me at pain when i look at this -new- interface, but after awhile it does strain my eyes. The outlines are numerous, the shading is unnatractive, and I really am upset at ANet over this.
My vote is to get 2 options. 1) Keep this new interface 2) Or change it back. Basically, you can acsess the options menu and choose which one you want. Honestly, ANet will get mixed complaints and they will blow a lot of us off because simply it's not what they want to hear, or, they do not have the time because of the Preview Event, planning, and complaints/help requests.
I believe if enough voices reach ANet they will give us SOMETHING. But until then i figure we will have to wait. Just enjoy what you can, and hope.
Good luck..

there infamous for not really seeming like there give a dam because of the automated messages that you seem to get about 90% of the time.
and hopefully gaiile might see this thread.
i like the New ui it has some practical issues over the last version, i don't really go into colours my self, apart from the colour of my cape which surffers with some problems of reflections making it to bright.
but a small change that lets you change from one interface to another shouldn't be to hard anet.
i wouldn't mind going back to before this update because for me its not just the UI that has got alot brighter, everything seems to as well.
i am sure i will get used to it, maybe its just because my gpu is powered by steam and has some old stone parts in it.(geforce 4 mx FTL).
anyways it would be heartless not to sign this as i have played and enjoyed this game for over 2,700 hours, and i would be really angry if one stupid update meant that i could really play anymore.
by the way jen you post was one of the most touching post i have ever read.

I don't know what the OPs problem is, some visual problem I guess, something like that.
Still this problem shouldn't be a problem. ANet should have put in some features to make sure that colourblind people or people with other abilities/disabilities don't get pushed out.
After all, more sales is more money is more meals at McDonalds for Gaile and Alex.
oh, btw, if anyone says crap like "there are other games or other worlds for you" or "the amount of people with this problem is too small to be cared about" or even "who cares"... I'll personally ram my fist down your throat and rip out you vocal chords.
Good luck voicecomming now hah!

I like the new color differentiation of the skill warmup from activated skill compared to interrupted skill, but the color scheme could use a bit of tweaking, but the party window (and certain other aspects) definitely need a revert option.

maybe its because im half blind, but the only real problem i have with the new UI are the purple bars on the hero bar. everything else is simply more contrasted against eachother, and the skill casting bars have a nifty animation, which i like. the colour desaturation when you die is a little offsetting, though. personally, i see little difference, but i can definitely sympathise. i hope everything goes well.

Have you considered using...what is it called, there are things that you can put over your monitor to reduce eye strain.
Hopefully Gaile Gray will see this thread, and maybe they will be able to send you some sort of patch to be able to go back to the old interface. The changes seem so minute that I'm surprised that so many people are having problems. I think that once your eyes adjust, the situation will be better. But again,to those with eye strain, look into screens that reduce glare, they shoul help with strain.
Although I personally an fortunate to be fine with either interface, if the colors are having a negative effect on colorblind people, I certainly think that is something that Anet should fix

but anyway.. ahem... i am not crying or anything.
-the exp bar is nicer in terms of being darker, but its still annoying on the eyes as well. whats with the glow tryin to make all this stuff more round??
-the hero tab was a nice change from the white lines in the blue bars it had before... but at the same time that purple is SICKENING its so bad and hard on the eyes, its just as bad as it was. darker interface please....
-The activation time bars were nice and really cool at first, but yeah they really distract you from what you were lookin at them for to begin with...
-I think the hp and energy bars were a good change 100%. the pip arrows are more defined as well.
-party menu looks nicer - (the spaced out hp bars now) but that add button is horrid, its really annoying to see if it lit up or not... is that just me? i have no eye issues, im 20/20 vision as well i got some damn GOOD eyes.
I think they should give us a totally customizable interface, forget giving us themes all the time, going good to bad or bad to good sometimes.. editable text colors, transparency, UI general color, just like windows desktop.
And yeah to whoever it was lol, i do miss the ascalon UI, running all your chars to your screen was fun lol.. im werid i know....

Man I flipped when I saw the new interface, I tried turning down the gamma and everything else except for what I wanted darkened became darker... its really irritating.
There is a thread in the Mesmer's forum where people are having trouble interrupting... i have no idea why, it must be the progression colours.
Anyway, Gaile Gray, as... well... if she can be talked to, then she can talk to the developers, or whoever they are.
Good luck^^~!

people who have a reason to be upset should not be shoved aside like some of you have tried to do.
the op is right, the new colors are not needed, and are very hard on the eyes. especially late at night. i normally play from 10pm to3am every night as i dont have school, but i do have a day job. this can be very very hard on my vision with the new colors flashing all around me.

I hate absolutely everything about the new interface. It is indeed very hard on the eyes, the new "cramped" health bars make casting skills on allies a chore and everything else about it is also a degrade from the original.
The old was fine, there was no reason at all to change.
@Anet: For the OP's sake and for the sake of those who simply can't stand the interface please change it back to the old or at the very least give the player a choice to use the old one of he or she wants to.

I have been playing for only about a month, so the changes do not aestethically effect me that much. But if you are having problems im sure Anet will fix it straight away. Another thing that migh help is one of those filter things you attache to your monitor screen. I dont know if it will help, but it might just work along with turning down the gamme settings. I also have this problem while playing in a dark room, so turning on the lights while playing im prety sure will help. So good luck with this and I hope this problem gets solved soon.

I don't like the new interface at all, either .Not one bit of it .The health and energy bars look cheap and the casting bar is horribly designed..I find it very hard to play the game the way i used to just because of this. The reaction to commands on my skill bar is different ;so i sometimes die because its so much worse .
But it isn't hurtful to my eyes..or at least i don't feel it .

For the record, colourblindness affects around 7 or 8% of males (it is far more common among men) and since the gaming industry is male dominated, UI issues are something that should really be considered. However, I don't think the OP has colourblindness by the sounds of it but some other condition (colourblindness is not usually associated with pain in the eyes). That doesn't make it any less important though, since obviously even folks without problems are finding it a strain.
Colourblindness does not mean you see the world in black and white. More likely, some shades and combinations are difficult to make out or label as this colour or that colour. For example, a translucent red colour on a black background may be almost invisible. Green/yellow shades may look similar and hard to label (sort of like dyslexia in some ways). That's why shades and tones, specifically contrast, are important to someone with colourblindness.
I'm personally finding the new "conditions" fade in/out much less obvious i.e. don't notice it quite so quickly when someone gets disease/poison etc compared to before. I'd like to have that fade removed and have it back to how it was before, which had more contrast.
I also prefered the 'flash' of skills how they used to be before, for example, when interrupted. It is, to me, less noticeable now.
Good to see more of the useless "get over it" "deal with it" type of posts though. Once you figure out how to fix the OP's eyes, and mine as well, as well as almost 10% of the population, please let us know. In the meantime, understand the only thing that can be corrected/help are the game colours and UI.

I have a similar issue with the new interface. The bright colors distract me, and as a pvp shutdown mesmer, I can't exactly turn them off.
In addition, my favorite character is a monk but I now find that difficult because they made the heigth of each characters name in the party box smaller, making it more difficult to quickly respond when large ammounts of damage are being taken to multiple allies. With my eyesight, they health bars bleed together. As a tombs b/p monk, I found it very disappointing.
Don't bother wasting time sending ideas to Anet's support. After insulting my intelligence by telling me to use the "Larger" interface size (after I told them I had eye problems and already use it), I was informed to post my issues on fansites.
I suggested an option under F11 to change back to the "Classic" interface so I'm going to start a Thread petitioning for one on every fansite I can find.
