Nightfall Undead?
Sli Ander
This is just speculation and an idea inspired by someone mentioning smiting. I know theres an army of undead in the Underworld on the Battlefield, but the odds of a pug wanting to take a smiter their are slim. Other than that and Lions arch(which I can solo easily with a smiter), there isn't much undead except for a couple scattered creatures in high end missions. Now heres what I know:
1. It's called Nightfall(spooky, huh?)
2. They have Dervishes, whom I think Smite Monks should have been much like from the start(ya know, halfway powerful against normal types of characters). I'm not talking about 55 monks or Dual Smite team builds or anything like that.
3. More new smites (including elites) in Factions. I haven't gotten far in there yet, but I doubt there's going to be a bunch of undead wandering around the countryside
Question: Is there any chance that Nightfall might bring about more combat with the undead? Therefore allowing Monks to make a comeback as a combat effective class, not simply as some Healer or precisely dictated build?
I thought it an interesting idea, so any comments on its possible plausibility(even if its just an extreme remote chance) would be appreciated.

I'm going to assume it'll have more demons than undead. But we'll see.

I always thought that the Afflicted should have been affected by Holy Damage. But oh well.

Greetings,
Here's some thoughts on this topic. Nightfall has an Egyptian feel to it, so why not borrow from that style?
I'm not 100% sure, but we haven't seen any mummies for an undead type. This is borrowing straight from the Egyptian mythology (Osiris I believe). As well as countless horror movies, both classic and modern.
Along the lines of movies, remember the Branden Frasier movies The Mummy and The Mummy Returns? Those featured 2 style of mummies (the main antagonist as well as the summoned types), as well as some Egyptian style skeletons (if I remember correctly).
But, who knows? Certainly not us. It's those folks over at ANet who know. So, either the "classic" style of Egyptian undead, or something completely new, I'm sure ANet won't really disappoint (at least as far as I'm concerned).

we know that the outcast god is the cause of The Darkness and thus the name Nightfall ...
... The Darkness already exists at ToPK ...
...therefore, no need to wonder what type of mobs you're going to encounter at Elona. They also featured the very same mobs during the Dragon Festival, also attributing it to The Darkness.

Just because the Outcast god is the cause doesn't mean he can't have undead minions, but I must admit that since they used the undead rising in Kryta, theres not much of a chance they would play a major role in any expansions for quite some time.

Greetings,
Well, the grasps (from the Festival and ToPK), as well as the Darkness, I see more as being demonic instead of undead. But, you could have a point here. The monster type is already introduced into the game, all ANet has to do is develop upon it.

The thing is though, how many pugs are going to take a smiter? Just about every pug I have ever played with in Prof and Factions hasn't taken a smiter. In my view this is a waste as Monk's shouldn't have to just heal as they are being forced to do now.

With the mention of demons in mind... Why shouldn't monks be able to take the front lines? Do you think Dervishes and Paladin builds are going to replace smiters even if we do go against undead/demons?
I just want to be able to smite....

You can smite anywhere in the game, just make sure you tell your group before embarking...
Anyway, we haven't seen any undead-ish monsters in the preview video and we've already had that "theme". I can definately see undead enemies in Nightfall, but I sorta doubt it'll be the main attraction.
Personally, I'm rooting for demons and/or bugs.

I doubt undead will be the main theme(even though I started the thread), but I can still dream....
AW Lore
i kinda got dissapointed with the undead of Prophecies.
when i first saw the undead skeletons inside the catacombs i was "cool, figthing skeletons, i wonder if there will be zombies" later when i reached kryta and found zombie necromancers i thought they were going to be melee type (i know, there are ghouls and executioners) with bites and diseases, though i understand skeletons being able to use magic .
i hope nightfall gets more undead action.

I would love to see some undeads in Nightfall. I love fighting them...
mightyzap
im missing the part of "own some mursaat" since factions came
wonder if some future expansion gets to "core" of mursaat (they came from somewhere to tyria huh :P with more and specially more challenging (stronger) variants. mursaat assasin/rit/paragon perhaps ? anyone ?

Poison Ivy
I'd rather see something new than undead, this idea has been use in video games so many times it's not even funny.
mightyzap
hehe also...some whole new types/kinds of things would be nice
or maby, since there is a link with the tyria desert stuff, we find huge army's of our friends "forgotten/enchanted"...sure u know the pain of dunes of despair and then imagine it as a "standard mob" like afflicted and summits
only problem i see is they kinda reached the maximum to handle with a character lvl limit of 20...in factions some bosses 1 hit u with 30%dp (tarlok evermind, bazzr dustwing...just to name 2) while a same class/lvl boss in tyria hit u maby 150 max.

Undead are annoying. Can't bleed em, can't poison em, and they don't leave usable bodies.
If Undead became a playable race, that'd be something else though...

The Nightfall trailer presented at the ChinaJoy expo quite clearly showed an Executioner. So it looks like the Undead will make a return indeed!

Undead in tyria is pathatic easy to kill creatures theres not even alot of undead in UW nor FOW. rotscale and lich lords, are only some of the high level undead. its hard to find a high level undead in tyria. i wish the undeads will be at least level 24 in nightfall. i heard of undead lords in the desert in nightfall
Guildmaster Cain
Well, in the ingame Cine, there was a HUMONGOUS Abyssal running after some character, so i guess the Shadow Army will be there, rather then the Skeletal army.
BTW, we DO get an UNDEAD hero, or I assume he is a ghost to be precise. There is a hero, who's origin lies in the Mysts and he can change both Primary and Secondary Class....

Even if they don't add more undead. It would be nice if they buffed smiting to make it even with other ignoring types of damage.
darrylhaines
Regarding the monks smiting, you might as well take an E/Mo with the 1 self heal and a couple of smiting skills with the normal ele skills, mainly because of much better energy pool and management.
Much more effective.

The undead Mesmer
I wouldnt mind if we saw more undead but make em fleshy! my necromancer still has nightmares from the krytan missions with the tons of non-fleshy undead >_<

Ridiculed
It'd be a cool twist if there was a twist about the undead in nightfall, such as instead of taking double the smiting damage, they take double shadow damage, and of course it'd have a logical reason that goes along with a lore ect.
