Before i always got a mod now all of a sudden i am just getting materials out of thigns i salvage. Did Anet drop our chances of getting our mods? (My friend is having the same problem)

I agree.. I think its the reason you rarely see caster weapons that arent green/collector. Because the likelyhood of getting those stats on a rare-skinned staff/wand/offhand is extremely unlikely. fix the caster weapons and at least we wont dread seeing one come out of a chest.

If the quantity of gold drops decreased but the quality increased then the bitching from the "average" player would start up again

"we dont have time to farm" <~~greens, replayable missions with a possible "perfect" drop from the boss at the end

"we want increased drop rate" <~~you got it

there is no way to please everyone, they will just throw in a new batch of "greens" to keep everyone happy for a little while longer

I think they should at least allow a guaranteed salvage of one mod on a gold item, I've gotten glittering dust from two perfect mods today

I'm not asking for an option to pick which mod to salvage as some have suggested just that you at least get one mod not materials
They did that to runes, back in the day you sometimes just got materials when salvaging runes as well.

I already made the analogy with the runes (I'm going to assume you didn't know it was once like that).

my point is..salvaging is a gamble and should stay that way, nobody is forced to salvage if you take the risk and win then good for you but if you take the risk and lose then oh well better luck next time.

Yeah, i guess golds should be more special. What I'd like to see:
  1. Reduce gold drops to 5-25% of the current rate.
  2. Gold items only drop as:
    • Weapons - 15^50, 15/-5, 15/-10 and +5
    • Shields - +45/-2 stance, +45/-2 enchanted, -2/-2 and +30 always combined with a random -2 reduction mod on shields
    • Wands/Staffs - 10/10 or 20/20 for attributes of the same profession as req , or 10 universal/20 on attribute of same profession as req
  3. Everything else drops as purple.

Basically 5-90% of the gold drops you get currently will be purple, only the really good ones will be gold.

EDIT: I guess chests would have to be adjusted to drop golds/purples at random. And probably nerfed more than monster drops. Otherwise, a party of 8 would go through 20 chests (5% gold drop rate) using 1 key each, find the gold one and get 8 uber-expensive items.

It's just that as the game progresses, anything less than perfect is pretty useless because of the introduction of greens.

Dividing rares into different categories of rares wouldn't really change anything fundamental, except give pretty names.

As is zealous.

EDIT: And you guys still don't see the underlying problem. The problem isn't that golds are too common, or that 14^50 is useless crap, but that the border between "worthless rare" and "expensive rare" is constantly creeping upwards because 'expensive rare' items are hardly ever removed from the game.
The crap items disappear, they get merchanted/customized/salvaged, but not the greens or "expensive rares". That means that they become more and more common over time, and THAT means that they drop in price - until finally they're "worthless rares".

It's simply supply & demand in a gameworld without effective item sinks.

No the underlying problem is nothing to do with how much you can sell something for but (going back to useless staff example)

Gold "rare" Smiting staff, requirement earth magic, halves illusion case, increases water recharge.

Ok that's exaggerating slightly to make the point (but not too far off the mark) It's Gold/Rare... wow! Not.

Why does something useless like that drop to start with? All it's good for is selling to the merchant. No sane player will use it, let alone buy/sell it. So why does it even drop? Why not stop the 'straight to merchant' crap dropping in the first place? You can still get salvage from purple and common items, so why are so called "Gold/rare" items basically the same crap just a different colour?

yes, all this weekend did is make us all more greedy and depraved in our unending search for... well... (what are we looking for>??)

I have done my tour of chest running from Naphui (cantha), jade sea (luxon chests), and the Deep (elite)

And over the past two weekends I have found:

A perfect axe 15^50
Plenty of bows and swords (jade, celestial, zodiac)
One Amazing Jade Earth Staff
One Amazing Air Zodiac Staff
One Single PvP equal Zodiac Shield
An Armor 16 shield with a 19% +1 to healing (woot)
An odd ritualist focus for -20 hp (saving for test purposes... 75 rit anyone?)

and :

about 30k worth of keys translating into piles and piles of items that are too sub par to feel good about selling... sure I got like 4 different +29 hp mods and about 3 or 4 pair of perfect daggers (yay now i have 12)

I guess in the end, Im happy because=

My earth spiker's staff looks neat.
I have all the bows I will ever need, if I make a ranger
I made about 10k back so far
Titles and Gambling is Fun

Guild Wars Chapter 4= Trade Wars

Sortof, yeah. Most MMORPGs (e.g. Everquest2) use itemwear to avoid mudflation - every time you use an item it gets slightly damaged, and unless you pay to repair it, it eventually breaks.

This is annoying as heck for the player, but something like that is necessary if you want to maintain items at a steady price.

The alternative to item sinks is mudflation, which GW suffers heavily from. GW has never had inflation, but it's suffered from rampant mudflation since day 1.

EDIT: Xenrath, staffs like that are very rare. They're NOT the typical worthless rare. A typical worthless rare today would e.g. have one perfect and one non-perfect upgrade, or be of an unpopular skin (I've a gold perfect Gladius, guess what it's worth?), or have a req higher than 12.

Mudflation is countered by money sinks, not item sinks. item decay is only one possible alternative. Imagine they DO put some sort of auction house in, but the house charges 10% or even 15% of the sale price as a fee? Mudflation is too much currency, leading to high prices becaause people are willing to pay exorbitant prices.

Another thing to think about: if the auction house caps item prices at 100k, how many people would simply sell their rare items on auction for 100k, rather than 100k ++? If the items are truly rare, then the price won't come down much, but I'd rather have 10,000 views on an item at 100k, than 80 views on the same item at 100k + 20 ectos. How many people would lose the extra money they COULD make for the convenience of selling quickly? And what would that do to overall prices of items?

I would agree with the OP. Quite frankly, I haven't noticed any change at all in the rate of "rare" drops nor an increase in the number of key drops. If I didn't know any better I'd say this has been nothing but a comeon and nothing more. Virtually all of the chests contents have been purple and worthless. Same for the very few gold drops. Worthless. Total waste of of time in my humble opinion.

No, that's INflation. Money sinks counter inflation, but do nothing about mudflation. If you release 50000 Kepkhets Refuge into the game, the price goes down regardless of how much cash is in the game, and, as it's a high-end gear it's not merchanted. As Kepkhets refuges keep dropping at as high or higher rate than the few which disappear because they're customized or disappear through account churn, Kepkhets Refuge will drop in price until it is regarded as a "crap green".

Mudflation is when there is a surplus of ITEMS, it is that things which drop rarely but at a constant rate will over time become common as muck.
Unlike inflation, mudflation is unique to MMORPGs and has no counterpart in real-world economics, because real-world products have production costs and can not drop in price under a certain level before supply dries up (when the market is saturated they're no longer profitable to make).

I see that Wikipedia has got this ass-backwards too - money sinks does nothing to counter mudflation (actually it accelerates the drop in price by limiting the available amount of gold in the economy).

Personally, I think the word "rare" is a misnomer. Items are classified into white, blue, purple, and gold. Players have arbitrarily attached "uncommon" to purple and "rare" to gold, where it may not have been the case. I don't think ANet actually said gold items are actually "rare"; certainly, they're rarer, but by no means rare in the strict sense of the word.

Gold items with "perfect" stats are indeed rare, and personally, I'm okay with that. I personally also fail to see why something must be "rare" as long as it's gold.

I think one of the main problems here is that even though it is the highest tier of random stat weapons, people aren't even able to make back the money they've spent on the keys. If these are indeed so "rare" you should at the very least be able to break even. Alas, even the pinnacle of Guild Wars drops is for the most part nothing more than a gold sink. The merchant NPCs will give you half of your money back if your lucky. Perhaps if the game had a decent auction system, one might be able to find someone who actually wanted to buy some of this junk, but I know I don't want to stand around spamming WTS for a couple hours to find them.

I agree. They need to fix this or change some things around. It was funny how a purple Oni Blade weapon that I picked up today was a 14^50, req 10, and HP +28. Right after that, I picked up a Gold Platinum Blade with NO damage mod. Just a clean zealous and vs Elemental req 13 Platinum Blade. Lucky me..not.

I really just wish that there where many more totally rare items, materials, gadgets, easter eggs, useless but cool collector items, funny things like mini pets...

wouldnt it be sweet if you could loot stuff like plans for customizeable features?

So you could get a totally rare chance to loot a "plan" for a uniqe hairstyle you could take to a hairdresser in a big town! It would be one of the new ways to add a new dimension to the game.

could you imagine how cool it would be to have an hairstyle no one else had?

and it could be much more than hairstyles... maybe body tattoos(not armor but actual tattoos, pircings, necklesses, rings, trinkets, bracelets, shoulder armor...

pet armor? weapons for spirits? uniqe guild emblems/capes? furniture for guild halls?

the possibilities are limitless for incredible rare and desired items that will make the game not overpowered but create a much better and deeper economy and game as people spent money on so many different and uniqe things.

right now its so limited. it feels like there are 30 items in this gam rehashed over and over. its like people always sell and want to buy the exact same stuff.. i wish there would be so much more variation in everything.

Over the past two weekends eh.

The Elite Mission weekend, I spent maybe 15-20k on keys. I didn't get many things that good, req 9 15^50 Zodiac Daggers that I sold for 30k I think. Req 10 15^50 Zodiac Sword was my prize though.

This weekend I spent around 250k in keys. I got a bunch of mods, at least 8 +5 heads that salvaged (about 15 that didn't), 2 +30 staff wrappings, near max stuff 19/20 ect. 3 15^50 Axes. 2 15^50 Daggers. One axe 15-10. 2 10/10 staffs for Ritualists. A 5^50 10% wand and a 4^50 20% wand. Probably made around 100k from what I got and I havent' tried to sell anything yet. So this weekend has been great fun (cause I hit r4 Treasure Hunter) and I thought it was kind of a good idea. Out of the 250 chests I opened, probably got around 200 or so rares. 170 were merchant food.

hmmm...ok

well if "rare" was really of "rare quality" every time you found a "rare" then it wouldn't even be considered "rare" when you did get good mods....get it?
