Please don't add voice acting /cut scenes...
Lawnmower
Just please don't... I can't take it anymore. It's getting embarrasing. I can't sit down and play a game... it actually ruins the experience! How hard can it be to come up with a decent excuse to kill 1 trillion enemies and then justify it with a 50 bucks pricetag?
Seriously Anet - Cut scenes and voice acting is just to bad. We know you're trying but its to horrible for its own good. it does more damage than good.
Fire your entire sound acting team and your cut scene team.
Then hire twice as many CGI animators, and work on making an CGI ending, similiar to Diablo and the warcraft games.
So Nightfall can start with a CGI cinematic opening, and end with one. I think I speak for everyone when I say that that would be much better, because you guys do amazing cinematics.
The in game cut scenes do just not work. its rushed. its horrible. dialouge is bad. the voice acting is the worst I have ever heard. My ears are still bleeding. An online game is just not the right enviorment to make a cohesive final fantasy / metal gear solid style story with cut scenes. It just dont work.

Voice acting is pretty shocking, they could do better than who they hired. No offense.

I disagree, I actually enjoy the cutscenes.
"BY BALTHAZAR'S BEARD... RIN BURNS! "
If you don't like the cutscenes, tell everyone to skip them, either way it explains what is happening/going to happen next, I tell you though, if they weren't included you'll see more people moan about them than if they were. I think the fact they're sort of cheesy makes them quite funny.

A better story wouldn't hurt either. I could actually stomach the horrible voice acting and no lips moving, if there was something interesting being said....
That said, I did enjoy the Prophecy storyline more than Factions.

I'd rather they improve the cuscenes instead of get rid of them. But yeah, they could use some improvement.
And let people skip and move on individually, dammit.

Ahem. Those cutscenes were not made by Anet. Go watch the credits on Factions. Its basically an all korean team...prolly the Lineage team.
The cut scenes and voice acting does suck overall, but i disagree that they are "wrong" or "do not work".
Final Fantasy cut scenes are rendered for YEARS in a cgi farm.
Metal Gear Solid cut scenes are done with MOTION CAPTURE and the great direction of Mr. So Toyota.
What needs to happen is it has to [b]improve[b]. It adds to the game. Prophecies was much better, but factions sucked.

Agreed. The cutscenes in Factions are so overly terrible they cause heavy bleeding from the eyes.
Mister_Smiley
well i would have to agree somewhat, i mean they do tell part of the storyline which they have to have, becuase their are some people who have no idea whats going on. As for the voices, some of them are really bad. They could make the mouths move, but that would take alot of work in its own and seeing that how much they work on the buildings and towns as well as the characters and everything else, i would rather have those then have the cut scenes/voice acting better. So they should just leave everything like it is.
Juhanah
you obviously weren't playing when the cut scenes had no sound at all and everyone were complaining about how bad it was. Or even before there was any cut scenes at all.
I like the cut scenes. They are simple and it add to the story. Even if the acting is bad, i really don't care since i can always either skip it or turn off the volume.
Big CGI cinematics are expensive to produce good voice actor cost a lot too.
I really don't want GuildWars to become a crappy game just because it have 25 breathtaking cinematics.
If i wanted to pay for a mediocre game with stunning cinematics and voice acting, i'd go buy one of the latest Final Fantasy.

i think they should at the very least improve how the people move... at least make their mouths move while they're talking and show them pointing to stuff. it seems to me like they used in-game emotes on created characters to make the cinematics.

there is nothing wrong with the lore or the actual story. if you look at the story as a script its actually a quite cool story full of twists and betrayel. white mantle is cool... prince rurik is cool.. alot of stuff is cool. its just the cut scenes and voice acting... factions was really mad, but GW:P was not good either.
they just needs to go away. no one appreciated them, and no one who likes them can ever be taken seriously.

They do what they was ment to do ... they are to inform about the story line so as i see it its just fine the way it is ... why spend more time (and cost) making something better when lets be honest , how many ppl will watch the cut-sceens more then once so seems a waste to me ... just fix the things so that when u got a vamp weapon on and the cut-screen is used to rez u U DONT DIE AGAIN ...

You wanna talk about simple? then why are you even beginning to talk about cut scenes?
if you can't do something right, then don't do it at all. And thats exactly what Anet should have done!
Story is the single most important competent of a story. It's what helped Diablo 2 raise from sucktitude.
The game would have been better with just in game voice bobbles, or simple warcraft 3 like cinematic where you only see the model and then a seperate screen with the faces mouth moving. At least that would have been decently.
the overly bad voice acting and cut scenes do not only destroy the credibility of the story, but also the world, and it makes the player not care. It makes the player not care about his characters. it makes the player not care about being the hero and saving the world. it makes the player have much less fun. it makes the player much less interested in the game.
if there had only been simple text screen, at least it would have left something to the imagination. Its like reading a book.
but here they filled out all the creativity with the worst excuse for cut scenes and voice acting I have ever seen. I have heard of people just instantly uninstalling the game after watching the prolouge because of how much it sucked.
many people these day play and become motivated by games by story. Again... the hole point of role playing games is being immersived in another world.
you can't really say that GW and GWFs cut scenes and voice acting reinforce that.
Dougal Kronik
I actually liked the way my party was involved with the cut scenes!
Though I do think they could give different voices to the different professions. More of a variety when someone else is leading the party.
I also want to be able to watch the cut scenes once I've unlocked them on my account.

Story is an important element to a game, but not the only element.
Gameplay comes first. Without decent game mechanics, it doesn't matter how good your story is, no one will ever play the game to find out. I think most here will agree, Guild Wars has solid gameplay.
Graphics and sound are also important, and I think that's what you're getting at here: The graphics and sound in the cutscenes actually take away from the story at points. And that's not good.
I haven't actually done a comparison, but are there more and longer cutscenes in Factions than Prophecy? Seemed that way to me.
Also, the fact you can't run past missions, and have to do them in order to get to the next area makes cutscenes even more annoying. It's only a few minutes, I know, but the fact I know I have no choice but to sit and watch it for the third time just pisses me off more than if I could truly "skip" the cutscene and move on.

Of course, I have worse complaints about Factions than the cutscense. The locked gates, and the forced missions in a certain order (even for second or third characters).
But do think Anet will improve the quality of their product. I mean, it's pretty simple: you continue to improve, or your product fails. Anet knows this, they'll learn from their mistakes in Factions, or they'll lose customers.
It's pretty much that simple.
EDIT:
Noticed this thread is getting heated.
Let me try to put some Water down by suggesting other alternatives to "removing cutscenes".
(OK, so the last point is a little off topic, it seemed silly to have a list of two items).

- enable a "skip" feature that will actually take you from the party, and move you along. This way, those offended (or tired of) watching cutscenes don't have to.
- Improve cutsenes, with better animation and voice acting.
- Remove gates, so people can explore and play the game in the style they want.

when I read about the lore on www.guildwars.com I at least can make up my own cool version of how the events "happened" in my head. This is impossible with the cut scenes.
Think about how story has been an important part of the best RPGs out there! Fallout? Valkyrie Profile? KOTOR? Final Fantasy? Deus Ex? Baldurs Gate? Elder Scrolls? Star Ocean? Vagrant Story?
And many cool games have good stories. but it is almost impossible to make good stories in an online enviorment. I guess its harder to code and animate things when its online? perhaps it creates lag and sluggishness to the game engine!
I heard that companies like Bioware developed special cinematic rendering engines which made them able to make great in game cut scenes on the fly. It seemed really robust from what we saw in KOTOR with the uniqe open ended dialouge trees.
Hell I dont understand why they couldnt treat it like they do in WoW or something.. sure its traditional and slightly uninspiring, but it works so much better without leaving a bad taste in your mouth and a wish to die.
thats how much I dislike the cut scenes.
And you can go to tons of major respected review sites and see so many people making fun of the story... I feel really bad when people trying to role play in this game or discuss stuff in the lore forum.
Different strokes for different people im sure, but this is just beyond humanity. I think every developer company has a responsibility to live up to what they have advitised and ArenaNet has many times said that GW would have an exciting and involing story. subjective - again. But you can say that about anything really and dismiss anything as lies and bullshit, as Lyra Song puts it.
It's just not fair IMO!

However I do agree with the points quoted.
I've seen the list of voice actors, and they are NOT amateurs. But they are ONLY as good as the material given to them and the director's view on it all.
So 9 out of 10 times when the voice acting sucks with professionals, its either the material, or the director. They have to learn to write better lines for them to say, or its gonna sound bad NO MATTER the actor's talents.

If they made cinematics better.. I'd like them to be acessed without having to enter ingame, IE you slip your CD in and click the 'watch cinematics' button or view them via a video player from the files you downloaded.

I DO appreciate the cut-scenes and would HATE to see them missing. That said, the voice acting is pathetic on the better cases, there is a HUGE gap for improvements, but PLEASE dont take em all out!!!
I canĀ“t stand reading COUNTLESS text inputs on NPCs....cut-scenes add a TON to the overall game, EVEN if it is as crappy as it was on Factions (Prophecies is a LOT better, but still is not perfect).
Later.

And what's with all the CGI suggestions? Do you think rendering the cutscene in CGI is going to improve its quality at all when the same terrible dialogue is being used? Blizzard's cutscene's were good because they had some good narration going on while they were playing.

I dont watch the cut scene, sometime i do, but not much. Anyway, i like the cut scene just being there when i need a laugh or want a little break from the game.

No no no... Don't get rid of them. Make them better.
My List of Improvements
-Do not have everyone stand in a line. (Be Creative..)
-Have the second and third party members talk as well. (The party just listens.)
-Custom animations for cutscenes. (Make body movements more fluid)
-Lips must move (Self explainitory)
-Have their expression change based off their tone. (Lot of work but would be better)
Gates
- Only have gates to major cities.

you say thatguild wars doesnt care about the cinematics? Thas bull, they just released the whole minions nolonger degen during it. Second, you will never please everyone on a topic like this. It is impossible (assumption, but already proven). I would prefer what is in the game now compared to the cinematics in games like Diablo. In Diablo when it goes to a cinematic, all the graphics change to a better version. If this happens in guild wars people would begin to question why they cant always look like that.
Personaly, i would rather go into these cutscenes looking like i look normal, that way it doesnt look like a different character is doing what i just did. The second biggest issue that i belive is that the peoples mouths dont move. Voice acting may suck, but when someones talking yet no ones mouths move it can get confusing as to who is talking.
/not signed, a little improvement (and yes they have time, there is no other way they could have had 3 weekend events in a row without time), but not a total problem.

I for one like the cuts, it helps me get a better feel of the story. However, if more than half the paty votes to skip (my methodology), I'll skip it. If I could submit anything, it would be the ability to go back and watch cuts later, like the 'Cinematics' button in Diablo II. That way I wouldn't feel as bad about skipping it, because I know I'll get to see it later at my leasure, without holding others up.

Motion capture wouldn't work. Fantasy setting, remember? Maybe if they forced all of the cutscenes to take place on a generic grassy field or modeled every map after some place in reality... assuming motion capture means what I think it does.
[EDIT]Okay, I think I was dead wrong about it. "motion capture is when an actor is rigged with sensor to move a 3d character" <- Correct?
Maybe it'd work, but it seems like an awful lot of effort for simply doing more animations.
[/EDIT]
CGI takes too long.
Animating a mouth to move up and down would look awful with GWs graphics. It worked in HL because the models were blocky (by todays standards) already. And fully animating a face... Well, since theres like 20 faces for each profession...
I think we're stuck with creepy statue faces for now.

Motion Capture:
They put you in a suit with tracking units on them, the triangulation system tracks the movements of those units. Later, the animation of those units are attached to a 3D model. The 3D model now looks like it moves exactly like the actor did. Rinse & Repeat.

Go watch trailers to Gun by Neversoft. All the cinemas use the in game graphics engine, as well as motion capture using Neversoft's own in house motion capture studio.
Now im not even asking for quality of video that high, since our cinemas will be non-moving mouths.
I just want the motion of the body. The head to look in the CORRECT direction, instead of shifting back and forth. Those little nuances that make a character look like their talking instead of just using their idle animation while some voice is coming out.

Sorry but I disagree. Yeah some parts of the cut scenes in factions such as the one after you beat the first story mission had some bad voice acting. But the cut scenes help move the story along. I would rather watch a cut scene then read a wall of text or little bubbles above the characters like you were reading a comic book. The thing that bugged me though is the fact their mouths don't move. It's like they are talking with telepathy or something.
Some people mentioned wanting to be able to watch the cutscenes on your own as you unlock them. Which I think is a good idea. I also understand most people have probably seen the cut scenes several times by now because somebody new wanted to watch it. One thing I don't understand though is why people play rpg's if they don't even want to know what the story line is.
So do a little work on the cutscenes and give people the ability to exit out of them if they do not want to watch them so people who do can still watch them without holding other people back. Also a little more action and lip sinking would be nice to.

I think Prophecies had no problems at all with cut scenes, but Factions made me physically wretch with it's half assed attempts at narrative. Just get the cut scenes back to the level they were in Prophecies and i will be satisfied.
Although can you just imagine getting pre-rendered, uber cut scenes like in all the slashers and Final Fantasy, it's unlikely but it would be so cool.

I recall a post where someone from ArenaNet told that mouth animation is not there because of multi-language. It would require huge amount of work, I guess. Maybe one day.

I'd have to agree that the cut scenes need work, not the trash pile. Factions cut scenes(from what I've seen so far) seem to be a bit worse and a lot longer than Prophecies. The thing I'd have to say is the best Idea is to use CGI or something to improve the movement of the characters in the cutscene. It would make it look a lot nicer. And since they can just stream changes into the game, it would change all campaign cut scenes. I love the fact that they include the characters(no matter how little) we make into each scene. Its part of the attempt to make you feel like you're affecting the story. Improve that some more in Nightfall, and I'll be happy as can be.
Please don't try to compare this game to the cutscenes or whatever from games like Conker. They have a lot more time to work and perfect those because they aren't trying to accomodate the party. They only have to worry about the main character you are playing. I'll gladly accept this lower level cut scene in exchange for seeing my character in that scene. Even if the female leader of the cut scene sometimes speaks with a male voice.

I was sitting on the train ride home thinking about this thread....and you know what i think is the problem...Prophecies cut scenes were a lot simpler than factions cut scenes and because of that, the basic animations that existed already fit the needs of it.
In Prophecies, cut scenes are usually this:
He talks, she talks, he walks, they walk, they talk, etc.
Factions tries to be fancier:
Shiro kicks, finds a coin, picks it up, does his stupid cross legged floaty thing, etc.
It just feels so awkward its so unnatural thats it "makes the eyes bleed".
It tries to be intricate, but the animations are so rudimentary (/stand, /ponder, /yawn, etc) that they dont work so well. And the ones they made just for the cinema are just awful.

It just feels so awkward its so unnatural thats it "makes the eyes bleed".
It tries to be intricate, but the animations are so rudimentary (/stand, /ponder, /yawn, etc) that they dont work so well. And the ones they made just for the cinema are just awful.

I do agree however the voices should be better, but the cutscenes arent that bad that they should be removed....
And why do you talk for the whole GuildWars Community?
Stop saying everyone this everyone that , you do not know what everyone thinks/does, you only know what some people say in game post on forums or what you think.
There are still about lets see 2.999.000 people you have never seen and know nothing about that play this game.
Edit: You do know that you can lower to volume and even mute it on the voices right?
There you go you just removed the voice acting.Problem 1 solved.

I've found some of the positioning to be really terrible. For instance, in the end cutscene for Minister Cho's Estate, Master Togo kneels down and looks into the boy's chest, not his face as it is obviously meant to be. It just looks so stupid, and he stays so long in that position during the cutscene that it is just obscene.
All i think that the cutscenes need is some better positioning, and only ocasionally.
