Hardwired for Distrust?
ducktape
1.You find someone offering free collectors armour you are wearing Shing Jea, do you take it?
A) No, I can get my own, but I might be willing to buy the collector-trade-item (bracelets) off of you for 100g each if I don't feel like collecting them.
2.You find someone offering free collectors armour you are wearing better but identical armour, do you take it?
A) No, if my armor is better than what is offered, don't need more armor.
3.Someone tries to sell Black dye for 500 gold do you a.ignore it b.Buy it C.warn them
A) Warn them that black dye sells for like 10x that price, and tell them about the dye and material traders and to check prices there before buying or selling so they don't waste money.
4.You are 50/50ing the UW then 1 group of smites drop 3 ectos for you , rightfully 1 of them is your partners, do they get it?
A) Yes, they get their ecto. I went orb farming for the dragon festival with some strangers (2-man farming) and although we had no loot arrangement, I felt bad if I got more drops than them, so I would pick up and drop the next one or two and say "hey this one is yours".
5.Have you ever sold an item for more than its worth beacuse you know you'll get away with it?
A) No, I don't usually sell items. If I do, I check what it's worth in the ventari's section and sell at 1K-5K less than that price to get rid of it quickly. Why try to rip someone off when it's faster to get some decent payment and get back to farming or chest running.
6.Have you ever pulled a scam? (no details please, and im talking soft scamming)
A) No, why bother.
7.Have you ever been scammed
A) No, I don't trust other people, so I almost never buy or trade. If I do need to buy something, the slightest bit of suspicious activity from the other person means I go shop with someone else.
Yes, veteran players do seem hardwired for distrust, but generally that's a good thing since there are so many scammers. New players and young people seem the most trusting and, unfortunately, most vulnerable to being scammed. It's nice that you are trying to help people, and unfortunate that scammers make people reluctant to ever believe that someone is actually doing something nice or helpful.

2. No, same reason + its just stupid if you don't need it.
3. I'll buy it, its not that hard to click on the dye trader before selling your stock.
4. Yes always if I say 50/50 its 50/50, furthermore I'll pay them half the cost of the 3rd if another doesn't drop in that run. Or in case of playing with guildies next one on whatever run is theirs.
5. I only sell items for what I think they are worth. Generally I try for the high end though.
6. No, I report scammers. In fact I reported a guy trying to tell me he could dupe fow materials. Such a lame scam.
7. No, I'm quite aware of what and what isn't doable in GW. Unless you count someone paying me 1k 5g instead of 1.5k. However I noticed it way after and they weren't on to message. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt though as I've done it before without thinking (always paid the guy what I screwed up on).
As for people being untrusting I can't say that I blame them. You spend a ton of time working for something such as fow armor and you get jerkoffs who have no problem taking months worth of your time away from you. Thats why I have no issue reporting people for such malicious behavior. Unfortunately it does take away from those such as yourself that do wish to be helpful. Anyways good luck and way to go. Always nice to see someone wanting to help out.

1.You find someone offering free collectors armour you are wearing Shing Jea, do you take it?
No. I'll tell him that he's an idiot because once you get collectors armor it's customized to whoever bought it. So he can't possibly trade collector's armor to me because I won't be even able to wear it.
2.You find someone offering free collectors armour you are wearing better but identical armour, do you take it?
Hell no. That's just silly.
3.Someone tries to sell Black dye for 500 gold do you a.ignore it b.Buy it C.warn them
I'd buy it. Then I'll warn him. Then I'll ignore him.
4.You are 50/50ing the UW then 1 group of smites drop 3 ectos for you , rightfully 1 of them is your partners, do they get it?
The drops are random. If more ectos drop for me, it's because I'm lucky. The next run I probably won't get any. The other dude won't get anything from me because chances are, he won't do the same back.
5.Have you ever sold an item for more than its worth beacuse you know you'll get away with it?
I never knew I would get away with it, but I did. You gotta love Ebayers.
6.Have you ever pulled a scam? (no details please, and im talking soft scamming)
Yeah kinda, some bad-mouthed-leet moron wanted to show off his uber leet oni blade by repeatedly dropping them on the floor and picking them up. I picked up the sword quickly by shadow stepping to him and he was begging for me to give it back. Since I had no use for the sword, I ran into a giant mob of Jade Brotherhood and dropped it in there before dying myself. Kinda fun to watch him desperately try to get it back. Oh, and he died btw. He deserved it for spewing his elitist crap around the whole group.
7.Have you ever been scammed
Nobody's ever scammed me, I've only scammed myself. Like selling an item I don't know the value of.

2. No, I don't take things.
3. A. Ignore it
4. Yes, they will get 1, and 1/2 the value of an ecto.
5. Of course. If someone wants to pay me double that it's 'worth', fine. I overpay a lot, because I'm very particular. I assume people can think for themselves.
6. I scammed a friend out of 2gp... he deserved it (no scams more then 2gp :P)
7. Yes. Didn't catch myself till i went to put 100k into the bank, and there was only 100gp... oh well, my own fault. I've caught more than enough people trying switches on me though.

4. Yeah, agreements are agreements. 50/50 means 50/50. I'd give my partner 1 ecto and ecto price/2 in gold.
5. Never had the chance to. If I could yeah I would.
6. What's soft scamming? I've never scammed. Certainly bought items below the price of what others would pay.
7. Never been scammed..too careful for that.

I have another option to add to your questionaire:
8. Someone agrees to buy the item you're selling, but in the trade window offers more money than agreed upon. Do you a) Point the sum out to them before accepting, just to make sure, b) Accept, but repay the difference if they bring it up to you after the transaction, c) Accept, with no intention of repaying the difference if it was a mistake?
1.You find someone offering free collectors armour you are wearing Shing Jea, do you take it?
Unless that 'someone' was a friend, probably not. This is mostly because I'm sufficiently experienced with GW to know I can do this sort of thing myself (if not simply spend some cash), and I'd rather let an actual newbie take advantage of the offer.
2.You find someone offering free collectors armour you are wearing better but identical armour, do you take it?
No.
3.Someone tries to sell Black dye for 500 gold do you a.ignore it b.Buy it C.warn them
C. There was even a time (when I had the free char slot) in which I'd hang around in pre-searing and annoy all the 'Buying dye!' scammers by globally broadcasting how much black/silver dye was worth later in the game.
However, also A after pre-searing. Not only are there dye traders at this point, but at times, the effort of warning people can be wasted because the person you're warning *knows* how much the black dye is worth, and is just offering to sell for 500g to see how many unsavouries bite.
4.You are 50/50ing the UW then 1 group of smites drop 3 ectos for you , rightfully 1 of them is your partners, do they get it?
Yes, unless there had been a previous double drop that I did not get my share of. However, I've heard horror stories of these situations, and would thus never 50/50 with someone I didn't know.
5.Have you ever sold an item for more than its worth beacuse you know you'll get away with it?
I have a problem with this one, because what an item is worth to me, or on guru, isn't necessarily what it's worth to the prospective buyer. The very idea of haggling is (unless you're really trying to get rid of that stupid green hammer...) to start high and either sell above or at your desired price. If the buyer wants to spend the extra money instead of haggling it down some more, that's really their decision IMO. And they have every opportunity to just say 'No thanks.'
Problem 2 is that there's an inordinate number of players out there who have more platinum than a newbie fresh out of pre-searing should really have in their account. They don't know how much stuff is worth, and because they have so much money they don't mind paying top dollar for miscellaneous items.
But if it comes to merchant items, runes or materials, I would not knowingly sell them for more than they're going for.
6.Have you ever pulled a scam? (no details please, and im talking soft scamming)
No.
7.Have you ever been scammed
As far as I know, there's only been one attempt to scam me (which failed). I think I was advertising a low req 15>50 zodiac axe in Kaineng, and someone accepted my price and attempted the old 'gold instead of platinum' trick. Even though I'd never seen it done before, I have always, always been cautious in trade. Erring on the 'thinking the best of people' side, I waited to see if the customer would realise their mistake and change the figure to the platinum column. Just when I was about to Whisper them a query, they ran off without a word. So I lost nothing, but gained the satisfaction that my cautious approach had just saved me 80k.
I just to judge how people trust these dark days
I would consider myself trusting and 'think well of individuals until proven wrong', but not naive. The world is, unfortunately, full of underhanded people. GW may be a game, but it's a game in which real people, including the underhanded, play. This is not to say that there are not some wonderful people in GW who will pick up that out-of-reach Zodiac for you and give it to you later--there are! And I'm pleasantly surprised when such a one is found.
Being mindful of your transactions is only common sense. You'll save yourself the distress of being scammed, and even good, well-intentioned, genuine customers can make mistakes.
Warning people about scams or just pointing the right direction for something is only courtesy. Maybe it'll encourage the person you guided to help someone else in the future.

I'd definitely point it out right away. Truth be told though, if the person I was selling to had been giving me a really hard time, though I couldn't specifically think of any way it could get that bad anyway, I might be hesitant to point out the error. I've never had a reason to be annoyed with buyers yet though, only sellers.

9. Only been ran to Droknars 3 times, twice so my Faction chars can go skill capping and once just for fun as the char had already been to Droknars via the desert. Even though those runners were good and honest, I don't trust runners 100%.

7. Once when I was a newb for 100 gold or something
8. (a.) I would point out the amount to them. If I didnt like them I wouldnt.

I'm afraid to say, OP, that I am pretty untrusting when it comes to GW...and I also to give things away for free a lot of the time, and get the same treatment you describe...anyways, to answer your questions:
1. No (although I have never come across anyone doing this so...unsure really)
2. No
3. A. Ignore it...I would assume it is a scam
4. Depends on whether or not I liked them, if it was, say, my brother then yes I would.
5. No.
6. No. Hate scams
7. No.
8. I would say B.
9. No. I took my elementalist across to Tyria and found a free run ro Droknar's Forge. The runner kept dying and then blaming the 4 elementalists in the group for not helping enough and saying we were all bad runners. I managed to run further than him. Ever since then I have fought my way across the desert and to Droknar's Forge the hard way.

2:No
3:C, warn them they can get more for it. I seen it happen that they are aware of that and just don't care/are rich. If they know but don't care I'll buy.
4:Yes, they'll get their part.
5:If I try to sell something I will often try to get as much for it as i can ofcourse, it's what you do when selling stuff. Either that or I'll just sell for low fast and get on with things
6:No, never ever scammed anyone
7:Just once, was the 125g entrance fee for fow. After we all paid he went to the xunlai and a minute later logged out
8, I don't accept (wether the other party does or not is irrelevant) and tell them they put in (way) too much gold, then wait for them to reply.
9:Suuure!! I don't usually trust other runners though but I'm a trustworthy runner :P
10:Yes, I won a computer game contest when I was a kid. The organizers had to pospone the ceremony for 45 minutes because it took me way longer to finish( or die) and stop making points :P. too bad 1st price was just some hand help computer with 1 game on it :/
ty and have a nice day!

I like to give away Kephets Refuge. My friend and I do it all the time. I just randomly open a trade window with a low level monk in Shing Jea or Ascalon and put the refuge in. I type in local free. Some people take them and don't even say thank you. Some people think its a scam and close the window. I have problems giving stuff away LOL. I will say this some people are very very greatful. I guess these few are the ones you do it for. There are alot of scammers in this game so people are leary of people being nice. Its to bad really.
Spellforge
I have a story on trust .....
I take my monk through "The Deep" with PUGs fairly often.
Now I can't afford to waste money on the keys for what are often useless drops but I would like the Seeker of Wisdom title for my monk
What I do is offer to open a chest for anyone in the PUG group who would like me too , I only ask that I am allowed to ID the item.
Out of a typical PUG at least 1 but no more than 3 people will take me up on this
by the time I get to the 4th chest half the group wants me to open a chest.
I open chest - pickup item - ID it - trade to player who gave me key -all done in 10 seconds. The other player gets to see what came out of the chest anyway , so he knows I don't swap a zodiac weapon for a straw effergy
I've IDd perfect vertebreakers and zodiac weapons and have passed them on to the rightful owner and not hesitated. I even took 10 minutes once to give someone their item because someone attracted agro and we had to fight. And that guy didn't get threatening or upset
Considering these people are trusting me with keys worth 1500 and potential items worth a lot more then I'd say there is some trust in the game
(we do make sure that there is a clear dialog log for screen captures so people have a greater sense of security)
PS - I think this has its own rewards as I normally get 1 fairly good drop anyway and 2 out of the last 3 trips I got the Mallet at the end

2. No, that would be a waste
3. I'd buy it for half what it was worth, then tell him that, but I hope I'd feel too bad about taking it for 500g. I refused a trade which would have earned me about 15k once
4. No, but I wouldn't expect to get one if I were the one to miss out. The game randomises drops (and presents), so you have to roll with the punches. EDIT: Yes, this is only if we hadn't agreed a 50/50. Always honour your bets!
5. Yes, that's just what happens in trading. It's worth whatever someone will buy it for, not the other way around.
6. No, and I think people who do should feel ashamed.
7. People have tried to scam me, but either luck or sense has saved me.
8. I'd go for b. See number 5. If it was an obvious mistake, then I'd say so.
9. I gather some runners are the trusting ones, as they will only ask for payment at the end outpost. I don't use them, but I'm not sure I'd trust them enough to give money up front even if I did.
10. I don't think I have. That would be cool.
In GTA:San Andreas I can happily pistol whip a ho, stealing back the money I paid her for some services, then steal a car and run over some grannies.
In GW it is still a game, with fake stuff, but at the end of the day it's real people sitting at their PC's, and that's what makes the difference.
That is one long post. Good thread!

1.You find someone offering free collectors armour you are wearing Shing Jea, do you take it?
I assume you mean they are offering the collector items needed for the armor. Yes
2.You find someone offering free collectors armour you are wearing better but identical armour, do you take it?
If my armor is better, then no.
3.Someone tries to sell Black dye for 500 gold do you a.ignore it b.Buy it C.warn them
Warn them
4.You are 50/50ing the UW then 1 group of smites drop 3 ectos for you , rightfully 1 of them is your partners, do they get it?
I give them 1 ecto and either pay them half value of the middle ecto (value of ecto based as 1k less than trader) or charge them half the value for the ecto.
5.Have you ever sold an item for more than its worth beacuse you know you'll get away with it?
Worth is determined by how much someone is willing to pay for an item. Some people don't want to bother spending a long time looking for an item, so they are willing to pay a higher price to get their item faster. Convenience has worth. With this said, yes, but within reason and not in the intention of charging someone more just because they didn't know better.
6.Have you ever pulled a scam? (no details please, and im talking soft scamming)
No
7.Have you ever been scammed
Yes, lost about 100k from a scam.

Do you a) Point the sum out to them before accepting, just to make sure, b) Accept, but repay the difference if they bring it up to you after the transaction, c) Accept, with no intention of repaying the difference if it was a mistake?
A) I point it out to make sure.
9. Simply, Trust runners?
Unless they want full payment up front, yes I trust most runners.
10. In RL have you ever won anything?
Yes
