Make boss's DROP wearable armor.
freekedoutfish
I realise this already exists in games such as WoW, but its a good idea.
Make boss's drop armor and have different rarity levels as you do weapons.
We keep the standard 15k and obsideon armors, but introduce armor drops which can be warn.
In a similar fashion to green weapon drops, they can only be obtained when dropped by bosses and would be rare drops (rarity depending on their colour).
Bosses would only drop armor of the same profession as themselves, and they would only drop for a player of the same profession.
For instance if your fighting a red elemental boss. Their armor would only drop if your an elemental.
The reason being that the armor cant be sold to others. (it wouldnt effect the economy).
So you dont want warriors or rangers picking up elemental armor which they cant use or sell.
The same way that profession can only capture elite skills from their profession bosses'.
Different types of boss would drop different armor:
Mersaat drop mersaat style armor.
Undead drop undead style armor.
Etc etc...
Or you could just have them all be green and only available from high end boss's.
They could be just as rare as green weapons, but because you cant sell them, it would depend upon you aquiring them yourself instead of buying them from others.
Making it alot harder to get and rarer to see.
Obviously you wouldnt get an entire armor set in one drop. You would have to keep going back again.
But because Anet dont like to make things too hard for you, you wouldnt get the same piece drop twice and waste your time.
If you already have the leggings, they wouldnt drop again. A different piece would.
This would add alot more variety to armor as people could choose between 15k, obsideon, or green armor (of varied types).
But like green weapons the armor cant be mod'd.
And each continent would add its own new armor sets to drop and as like green weapons, no doubt the armor would improve.
[edit]
Due to a suggestion by Moakieuk:
An alternative to my idea would be to have different boss's contain seperate parts of the armor.
The only issue then is that they may all be from different creatures and not match :P!
The idea is that different boss types have different armors unique to them. So you could mix and match maybe from different races, but then you wouldnt have a full set of matching armor from one race.
The only way have that work is by having 4-5 bosses of the same race and same profession which you have to kill throughout different locations in the game!
But that would add alot more bosses.
I still prefere the idea full armor sets from one boss.
Or as Moakieuk suggested too:
Have a boss's lower creatures contain the other armor pieces. But that would require 4-5 lower creatures around each boss each time. They would also have to be named in a special way so you knew which one dropped which part.
Im going to personally stick with the idea of returning to the same boss to get all the armor pieces (if you want identical matching armor)!
[edit 2]
A suggestion to stop it from killing the market for regular 1.5k and 15k armor is to make the armor drops have the exact same stats as the other armor.
It wouldnt offer anything more different then appearance.
[edit 3]
In terms of the effort to design and implement the armor.
The shape, and designs and patterns technically already exist, or atleast the patterns for the armor will exist.
Its just a case of improving the apearance and shape to fit onto a players character when they are used.
[edit 4]
Just to admit another edit to my long idea!
Perhaps instead of having single armor pieces drop, have the entire armor set drop.
And have the drop rate be so low that the chances are even slimmer then most green drops.
And have it so that only those over a certain experience amount can cause the drop. Perhaps over 2 or 4 million experience. Which at the minute would count me out at 1.5!
It would stop any low level or less experience players attempting to farm it, and cut down on the number who could farm the armor because most couldnt anyway.
Once you reach a certain experience amount, there isnt alot else to do anyway other then gain titles and more experience.
So why not reward us for that experience.
[edit 5]
Instead of green armor dropping, we have green armor materials. These would have very low drop rates and would take huge amounts of farming to aquire. I realise Anet shuns on over farming, but be honest.... they incourage it anyway with lightbringer points.
So you would then take these "rare-green-materials" to a "green-armor-collector" in the capital cities and have unique green armor created for your class.
You could tell the green-armor-materials, but not the armor pieces, as they would be personalised to you like any other armor.
It would have the look of a perticular species, or NPC.
But you can only craft green-armor for a species or NPC which has your same profession. For instance; an elemental couldnt craft Ruriks warrior armor.
Plus make this green-armor mostly unique to the new campaign, and add the odd few to previous campaigns like they did Heroes. But only for new campaign owners.
This green armor would replace any new green weapons in the new campaign...
Result = insentive to buy the new campaign and insentive to play previous campaigns to get green weapons.
You could then combine both green weapons and armor if you own more then one campaign.

Thats very interesting
not difficult programming wise, but incredibly time consuming for the artists.

I like your idea of having seperate armor pieces come from different boss's or lower creatures which surround the boss.
But you would either need 4-5 bosses of the same and profession to contain then, if the armor was to match.
Or have 4-5 lower creatures around the boss all the time, which are specially named so you know they bellong to him.
Otherwise you might end up with a strange combination of Mersaat leggings combined with drawf helm and a undead armbands etc etc :P
Unless it all matched, but that would defy the idea of having race specialised armor unqiue to them.
But its a good suggestion.

It wouldnt ruin or effect the economy.
How would it ruin the armor system?
An option is that the armor would have no more special stats then the normal 15k, so it would be out of pure choice and athestics!

Like Lyra said, it isn't necessarily hard to implement, but it isn't like to happen in GW.

My primary is an ele and all our armor sucks.
Compare the ele canthan to the new nightfall armor and they look almost identical, aside from more pattern.
The armor for the boss's has technically already been designed and painted and implemented into the game, because they obviously already wear them.
It would just be a case of increasing the detail, and reshaping them to fit onto a characters body.

Im so with you on this Idea , ive started to get bored with the game becuase it lacks variety .. its allways the same things ... if they would implement this gw would atleast have some variety . /signed 1000000000000000000 times

this could never happen. as cool as it would be to be able to wear that metal plate on the back or a charr's neck it just wouldn't fit on a human. some turtles already drop their shells which can be used as sheilds but overall monster armor is made to be worn by the monsters and therefore would not fit on humans.

I think if anything like this was implemented, it would be like this:
* Kill a boss
* Boss drops GREEN armor piece
* Take the piece to a specific enemy armor crafter
* Crafter uses the armor just like material, and you get armor thats basically just like what the boss monster type has to the stats you choose.
This:
Creates a market for green armor pieces.
Is easier to program, imo, than dropping armor already customized to you, plus it gives you the option of setting your stats, etc and you dont have to hunt down specific class types.
For example.
There could be an armor crafter in Droks whos a White Mantle who defected. He is an armorsmith and can make White Mantle armor if you bring him green armor pieces from a White Mantle boss.
SpookyTaco
I have to say that in theory this may be an interesting concept, but i'm sure we all really know nothing like this will ever be implemented.
Props for the idea though.

Weapons, and runes are good, but armor is specifically tailored to each individual. It's enough we can get the crafting materials.

You talk about creating a market for green armor?
I said the idea is that the armor couldnt be sold.
You dont want armor being traded because the market would go collapse, and you want armor to be something which you have to work for, NOT something you can buy from others.
And your over complicating it by saying you take it to a crafter to make it fit you.
The would FIT from the minute it dropped, because it would be dropped by a character who is the same profession as you.
It would know if you were male or female and it would fit you straight away.
All very simple. All very easy to do.
It would know if you already possess a piece of armor from that boss and either drop a piece you need or non at all if you already possess it all (all it needs do it check your characters armor and your inventory).
All very simple.

I'd only do it on creatures that wear armor Charr warrior bosses, they seem to only have chest/back armor and wrist/hand armor, so only they'd be dropped and so on, like the fire imps, for some reason you see them with a sheild equipped, when you kill it, it normally drops the sheild it has (I dunno why an ele would have a sheild).

Well, freekedoutfish, it's an interesting idea, not likely to be implemented, but certainly interesting. I do believe, though, that as you describe it, the armor should be dropped only by enemies the same size and shape as humans, which means:
-humans themselves
-mursaat
-undead
-wardens
-tengu
Everything else is too big, too small, or not shaped properly to provide a full set of armor (centaurs couldn't drop leggings or boots, for example, nor could forgotten or naga). Charr and Dredge, for example, are too big, and have very different anatomy. Dwarves have similar anatomy but are too small.

We have a green drop system.
We do not have an equippable armor drop system.
Youre proposing a totally different system of loot drops which would be a pain in the butt to debug.
We can take the existing green drop system and merely add a green armor to it.
The green armor can used like a collector item for armor collectors.

I like the idea a lot, but im thinking of a realistic way to implement this into the game. :P

Never going to happen. Armor is one of the biggest gold sinks in this game to get gold out of the economy and out of the players' hands. Besides the profit traders make, id and salvage kits, and keys, its really the ONLY supstaial gold sink in this economy. Doing this will actually cause massive inflation as people who would have bought 15k armor etc will now save up and just farm over and over again until they get that armor for free. Consider just how many people will do that, and you'll have many millions in in game money that would have been removed still in the system.
Players selling minipets to each other isn't part of the economy. Money just shifts from one player to another. When gold is randomly created everytime somebody kills something, everybody will just make more and more money all the time. The only way to remove the money is to have things like armor and crafter costs. Removing the incentive to buy armor from a crafter, and inflation WILL result.

Going along with Lyra's idea of greens, why not keep the green drops customized? That way (shouldn't take too much programming to add a tag to do this) it can only be sold to the trader by the person it was customized for. That way freekedoutfish's idea still would be outside the market, so to speak.

Interesting Idea.
But I think making new armor is hard work, especially for high graphical game like GW, and add that to all the differrnt kind of boss there, and to fitted to differnt proffession's character model. I think that is why instead of having drop armor from the mob like in many MMO, they just make it where you drop runes.
But this spark a interesting idea. Green Runes! Runes that are more rare, and offer a better, or more differnt stats improvement. (could be customized assigned to or not....)

I know its a bit unrealistic, but my idea was that no matter what the size of the boss, the armor would always fit your character of the same profession as the boss.
There would limitations due to some boss's being huge or not human in the slightest. So maybe not all boss's would drop armor.

If we had a similar system where the drop chance for armor was stupidly low (whether it be full armor sets dropped or single pieces), then I dont think you would have a staggering number of people farming.
I think alot would realise that its pointless and realise that its just down to chance.
But I agree, you would still have those who would spend 24hours a day farming for it.
But I dont think everyone is like that. You would still have alot of people sticking to 1.5k and 15k armor.
I know its not a perfect idea and it would have to be implemented in a different way then what im suggesting, but I cant see why its impossible.
Perhaps even have a restriction on who it drops for. Maybe it would only drop for those who have an experience level greater then 2 or 3 million (im assuming thats big, cos im currently on about 1.5 million I think).

Get the drop of armor, and craft it to whatever profession stats you want.

Ooh green armor.

I think the base idea is good Fish, but i think being able to sell the armor would give the economy a boost as well. it would be like green farming. also you could give the boss armor different bonuses then crafter armor so maybe you could get more interesting combos. Perhaps to lvl the playing field the armor has good bonuses but cannot have runes added. this way players choose the cool new look for their toons or more char specific armor.
example:
Rurics leggings armor 90 +70 health +4 vs physical
Shiros Gloves armor 80 +10 energy (unless shiro is considered a sin the ar 70)

I can understand the argument for against, being my current armor is customized and cannot be worn by others.
I propose a collector sort of npc that will do the salvaging for you(and XXXXX amount of coin) to produce equipable Giant's Boots from X(say 10?) giants boots items. You can only get boots from Giants boots, you can't get a helmet, or a pauldron from bracers...etc.
Make the AL of each armor produced depend on the level of the wearer at time of creation(and profession obviously), or armor fitter NPC location(droknars forge would yield lvl 20 armor).
Here's some hard rules:
White armors are equivalent to collector armor in tyria, and cannot have inscriptions.
Required amounts of other colors of armor will yield, blue, purple, or gold armor, and are allowed inscriptions and runes.
Big(high level) bosses that do not drop uniques could drop green armors.(which could have inscriptions + small modifiers, + 5 health for example)( You could limit this to one armor part per boss. A ranger boss would have gloves, magic users a helmet, warrior chest piece, etc)
These armors can only come from humanoid creatures.
With a full suit, a person should look more or less like the monster/enemy, though retains shape of player character as armor is now(obviously)
These armors probably shouldn't be dyable, but eh...
It's sure rough, and needs work, but I'm going more for a way to work th OP into the game as it exists.
Anyway, the OP is a great idea if it's worked right, and could add great money sinks and a lot of varity to player characters.

This armor wouldn't even be customized, but it would be soulbound, thereby solving the trading issues.
Now all we need is to raise the level cap.
Guild Wars definitely needs to be just like WoW.

HawkofStorms makes a valid point. i think the game creators are keeping it simple not adding anymore economy hassle as it really needs till there sure the three chapters are balanced. they've had experience with diablo and more and i assume pondered a similiar question related around wearable armor drops. i think weapons and inscriptions are still on there list for improvement.

If you were to use my system to impliment the mob armor.....
You could sell the pieces, or use your own salvage kit if you got out of class armor, as happens now...Nothing would be customized as far as actual drops go.
It wouldn't change the economy, people who want FOW would still go for FOW, or the 1.5k armor. It wouldn't "mess up" anything.
It would be a gold sink, you'd have to pay NPC to actually get the armor.
Ele armor could be the same model/design as Warrior or assassin armor in this way, as it's based solely graphically. Would make PvP intersting as it would grow much harder to rely on obviously different graphics.(but there's still character shape and weapons to go on..)

I just wanted to counter some of the /notsigned posts, or should I create a new topic and have people bitch at me for not being original, or wanting the credit?
6 of this, half a dozen of the other I guess.

Would this have people start paying for runs to get the cool boss armor then?
