too may little guilds, doing nothing...

SO? Not all people like to GvG or farm or constantly faction-grind. Some of us like to play PvE and have little interest in beating each other senseless in a PvP situation.

Our guild has 7 members. We're all friends, and right now half the guild is off exploring WoW. That's ok. They check in every now and then, half-expecting us to boot them because they're not "contributing to the guild". But, you see, we didn't invite them so they could grind and provide gold and goods. We are all friends who have similar play-styles.

IF we want to PvP or suchlike, there are several other smallish guilds we have a standing invitation from. No big deal, no need to disband to satisfy the mis-guided desires of elitists who would dictate what we do.

On the contrary, I think large guilds fail more often than the small ones. I used to be the leader of a relatively big guild with no real focus - we dabbled in everything, but were particularly good at nothing. That was fun for a while "hey, let's GvG", "hey, let's clear UW", "hey, can someone run me from ascalon to sanctum?" and since the guild was about 70 people, someone usually would. But sooner or later people tend to learn towards one thing - some prefer hardcore farming, some wanted to get into HoH and when "core" members leave, the guild inevitably gets splintered and dies.

(Please note that this doesn't apply to hive-type guilds like XoO. That's a couple steps above "big" and probably works in an entirely different way)

Shortly after that guild died, I joined a medium-sized guild that recently began focusing on HoH. I fit under the same category, so the few people that began playing HoH in that guild quickly fell together and in a month or so, we splintered off and formed a focused HoH guild of only 14 people - The Legend of Pi. Almost 9 months later, 8 of us are still together and we have a couple people formerly from The Zaishen for a total of 11 members. Sometimes we don't have 8 for a team, but we prefer to call people from friend lists rather than exclude guildies, which would happen if the guild was bigger and more than 8 people happened to be on at once.

Something that you apparently don't know is that most good guilds - the ones at the top of the ladder, the ones you see win HoH all the time are small. No more than 20 members.

So, no, small guilds should not disband and form large amorphous blobs with a million different interests.

I think you need to realise that we all create guilds for different reasons.
I myself am leader of a guild with an impressive five members, all of whom I know outside of GW.
Why did I create this guild? Why did I throw away a few dozen platinum on kitting out a guild hall for a bunch of friends I "could have just added to my friends list"?
Not for PvP. Shocker. Not even for PvE. Double shocker.
For RP.
My friends and I are all RPers and considering GW doesn't present anywhere in particular to RP, our hall is a godsend to us.
So no, we contribute absolutely nothing to YOUR game. We have absolutely no presence on the Guild Ladder and we rarely even team up in PvE. But you know what? We have fun. That's why our tiny, insignificant guild exists, and why it will continue to do so, however much it annoys you

Big time PvP guilds are small guilds. Having too many members means too many people can get upset, too many people to do an 8 man job.

Since you like to force people to do things, how about we make you make a one-man guild and stay in it?

Anyway, I started my "guild" back when GW first came out. Just a group of friends who enjoyed playing through the story together and discovering different things about the game, then letting each other know about them. We stopped playing GW after about a month, moving on to different games, but staying connected through Ventrilo, and seeing as how most of us live near each other... that's self-explanatory. We recently have gotten back into GW. It's been about a week, and it's just a new game. We all even made new characters so we can re-do the story again, because we forgot most of it. LoL

You know I just started my Guild and I have 4 members, thats it, but we go out questing with each other all the time, and I'm on almost everyday helping my guildies get Max weapons or helping out with a Mission. I love my guild, and i love having the challenge of being a Guild Leader its hard sometimes but its rewarding when i make my guildies happy, are you saying I should break up just because I don't have lots of members like some of the other big guilds? so what? its about fun and making friends isn't it? Yeah we don't have GvG, not even an alliance yet but I work my hardest to make sure my guildies are happy and I wouldn't give it up for anything!

Not sure how this applies, but........

In another game, Dungeon Seige, I started a clan (guild). All clans out there wanted the Elite people. Too many players were being turned away from the 'Elites' for different reasons. Even though I had belonged to one of those 'Elite' clans and could join anyone of my choice, I started the Sovereign Warriors clan just to give players of the game a clan to join and a tag to wear proudly. I began teaching the players the 'tricks' of the 'Elites'. Within 3 short months, I had 30 members and the 'Elite' clans were recruiting the heck out of my clanmates. My clan now has over 70 members and is the most repected clan in the game. The Sovereign Warriors now has a presence in Guild Wars, Runescape, and Neverwinter Nights. When I finally was able to get Guild Wars, I gave leadership of the DS SW to another member. I felt the leader needed to be active and have a presence in the game and GW was taking my time away from DS.

Other members of SW had already started the SW in GW. I joined straight off. The principals I had founded SW in DS were absent from GW. The high level members were 'too busy' to help us lower levels. I and my best friend quit SW and joined another guild. After a few days of seeing no one on, we quit that guild and formed our own. We play together almost daily. We don't actively recruit. We have a 'maxed out' GH, just because we can. It is easier to invite friends to the GH to trade items or to chat without all the local chatter.

One evening while I had a character in Piken Square, in pre, I watch several people arguing over guilds and people spamming for members. One was even charging the recruits the 100g to join. I made a comment, questioning the 100g fee. I had 2 people pm me to join my guild. I invited them and made them officers. Since then, the guild has grown to 9 members. All they want to do is play the game. They don't want to have to farm 5000 faction points a day, and gvg once a week. They just want to play and be left alone. A couple have asked for help in missions, and I helped a couple get to Droks and get Droks armor. If they play once a week or once a month, so what.

I have 3 accounts, 1 with factions, and have bought 2 extra slots on 2 of the accounts. I don't want to be told I have to do this or do that to be a member of any guild. That is why I have a small guild. Maybe some day if the members want, we will pursue the pvp way of life. Just maybe.

Wow. I'm amazed at the stupid and bizzare conclusions people jump to, and/or the fact that my points go completely over their heads. Maybe it's my autism that causes these communication difficulties? That's probably a part of it, but I find it hard to believe that's the entire reason.

Again, it seems I'm in almost total agreement with one of my supposed detractors. As for what I said, there is no way you can convince me that a guild which does not do anything, ever is justified in it's existence. If small guilds do something, I have nothing against them. But most of them don't.

No, you're wrong. For one thing, doing nothing is not fun. If people in a guild have fun, that's NOT the kind of guild I'm talking about. I have NOTHING against those guilds. It's when they don't do anything that they become worthless in my eyes.

Egocentric goals? Tell me, how is wanting to have a group of people to play with egocentric? That's all I want. Oh, and I agree that most big guilds are tyrannical, and I dislike that as well.

Now, people, HERE is the kind of pompous ass who is far more deserving of negative attention than I. Look at this, he forgets that there are such thing as social/PvE guilds. He says 'nobody has heard of me'. Apparently he knows everyone in the GW community and whether they know of me or not.

He also seems to be of the impression that all I do is 'sit around'. Way to jump to conculsions, pal!

My guild doesn't matter? Tell me, oh enlightened and all-knowing lord of Guild Wars, what makes a guild 'matter'? Judging from the first paragraph of your post, I imagine it's all about the guild's rank and other stuff like that, which is meaningless to a social/PvE guild. How sad. Sounds to me like the majority of guilds 'don't matter' to you. I find that quite pathetic.

It isn't hurting anyone. My guild is only 3 members yet we have cape & hall with extensions to it. Only problem is that we can't find an alliance because we are to small and it is hard to recruit for a small guild.

I thought this thread died on its own, but it seems we have some necros here . . .
