Guild Wars Nightfall: Map switching going to be any "smarter"?
3 pages • Page 3
We'd all like this to be the case, but we don't know how much coding is involved, or how the current system works, as we're not the devs. I think that if it is too difficult to implement the map switching without going anywhere, that they could send you to the least populated district of the city and that -may- reduce latency issues on initial load.
And, to rehash my statement in the earlier parts of this thread, if they did that (reduced latency on major port loading) then I personally believe this would be a non-issue.

also directing people without leaving the continent im on would be helpful so i can say "so so is north west of x" without havin to map to the continent just to see the map

An example of what I did the other night:
Joined a guild/alliance group in Int. District to help with THK using my warrior. When we fully formed we had three warriors so I decided to get my necro to SS. I logged onto that one and found it at Iron Mines set as MM. I jumped to Seeker's to switch secondary to Mesmer. Upon arrival I remembered my Canthan necro hadn't done profession quests so I mapped to Kaineng, then to Senji's. I switched secondary, reskilled and mapped to LA, then to THK and then to Int. District. It probably took 5-6 minutes tops but it felt like eternity when you have people waiting on you.
I don't have problems loading areas usually, but Kaineng and even Senji's are two of the longest. I'm sure so many people going back and forth through there cause the bottleneck. Of course, the issue I described above will be history when we're able to switch secondaries using the skills window, but it would still be nice if travel was cleaned up a bit. I can accept it as is however. I'm sure they'll do something about it if they themselves start getting tired of the steps.

The reason it's with a boat is becoz you have to travel to another continent (which is in fact ANOTHER CHAPTER) Imagine the zoom option... after 6 chapter you'd have 6 zoom levels. The M option would give you an endless list and would result in people whining about the scrollbar again. It's never any good now is it... Change something and they'll find something to bitch around again anyways. /not signed |
If you have read my other posts in this thread, you would see that there are ways to prevent people from going to chapters they don't own, even if they can see the continent.
An alternative that I just thought of that would still have the big map would be at the third zoom, it just says the names of the continents, instead of showing all the individual towns and stuff. Then, you click on whichever continent you want to go to, and as long as you have access to that continent on your account, then it lets you zoom in to the views we have now. This way, it will be a lot less clutered than my previous idea, and it will still be a quicker for the people with slow computers to load for the people with slow computers than how it currently is. Plus we will finally be able to see all the continets together. Even if the map for the third zooms is really big, we will still be able to easily choose where we go to.

/signed, but I don't care if its one huge map or not. When I click the boat, it ought to show my current chapter's map, and also have other buttons for each chapter I have unlocked on my account so I can switch between them easily. I really hate having to go to LA/Kaineng just to get somewhere.

Just make an option that toggles between the four maps without moving your character anywhere. Let my monk sitting in Unwaking Waters be able to hit map, and look at the Tyrian Map. If they want to still use the boat thingy, have the boat be the button to do this. |

/signed - ive got a great idea what about arrows at the corner of each continent which just shows another map like a up arrow down left right etc and you could zip through the maps and for people who havnt purchased a game they could see the map from another game but not go there would be simple and nice
