Best Change to GW in 2005
Denny Pace
As the year comes to a close, I wanted to start a positive karma thread that focuses in on the best change to Guild Wars in 2005. Everyone ante one up, and we'll all have something good to reflect on as we move into 2006.
My pick: Anet removing the whole 'refund points' construct. This was a bad idea from the start, prevented people from being flexible with their characters, and simply didn't add anything to the game. Showing that there's really nothing more important to Anet than making the game better, they swallowed this one and removed it from the game.
Kudos to Anet, and (raises glass) here's to 2006!

My vote goes to.. Observer Mode!
Now all the small guilds can benefit from learing the strategies from high ranked guilds! Also big pros about the refunds system revamp. (Removing it then. ) I remember on how annoying it was to go farming with one build for a monk, and then you had to switch back, and you couldn't, really annoying.
I'd like to raise a pint of beer for A.net for doing a wondefull job on their feeless game!

The fact that a.net continues to give us a great game and great events for no monthly charge. TBH i've never had a problem with any of the updates, the AoE nurf i felt was good as it meant we all had to devise new builds.
A.NET FTW!

For just being super cool

I'd agree also with the removal of refund points. It made experimenting with new builds a lot easier.

Implementing faction. And then boosting faction

My second change would be the recently added Spec. Mode for smaller guilds or guilds not on the top 100, to get a feel of what's being played in the current GvG metagame.
And my last change would be...Halloween. One of the coolest things to come out, the Halloween update gave us a reason to sit at home and bother with candy from old ladies because we had the Mad King and if you didn't type in that emote, he'll strike you down! If you got lucky, like I did, you'll play R/P/S (rock, paper, sissors). And who doesn't like a pumpkin helmet infused!

Refund points and the 15K exp /skill point after 32 skill points.
That, and the ember light guy that has every normal skill.

Whats this refund thing?
Arturo02
used to be you had refund points. They allowed you to reallocate att points, but everytime you made a +1 or -1 change it cost one refund point. You could get more refund points, and honestly I forget how. By the time I had built up my chars and knew more to want to change stuff, the refund point system was gone.
I would have to agree that this change was the best of 05.

I'm gonna have to jump on the attribute-refund bandwagon - I got incredibly bored with this game, but when I heard they did away with the refund point garbage I came back. It is sooo much better without forced grind to switch your character around.
You got more refund points by earning XP.

My fav change is the faction and the faction boost.
Other nice changes:
- observer mode
- Refund points
- Toggle of capes and hats
- Balancing of spirit-spam, smite etc.to keep the pvp side of things interesting
- Free SF update (new area, new hard quests)
- Fun Halloween and Christmass updates

Best change was definitely faction...with observer mode coming in a close second

Removing the attribute refund system is my best changes for 2005. Follow by Sorrow Furnace and all the holiday events.

Attribute refund system ftw.
Worst: Tie between raising prices of buying skills and the aoe nerf. (No more easy farming =(, now I have to actually kill them.)

New target interface that shows timer bar for target's skills.
-Trying to interupt with that old "fade in - fade out" system bleh.
Pretty much all the updates to the feedback interface, pet and hex damage displayed, energy drain and gain, ect.

Other favorite changes:
- Removal of attribute refunds (the old system was occasionally a pain, even though it didn't often create problems for me personally)
- Pet damage display - I like see how much damage my pet's doing, on those rare occasions when I actually take it with me.
- The AoE nerf (I'm sure people will hate me for this one ) - While it can be inconvenient for many nukers, I've found that this can actually prove useful in some situations.

Seeing as getting to UW ect is still dependant on favour I guess Sorrows Furnace. Oh yeah, all the nerfs were amusing - if only for observing forum ranting...

Didn't it get released in 2005? I'd say that was the best change.
Other than that, the refund points is awsome (the fact they don't exist anymore) and the toggle cape thingy

Attribute refund ftw.
Chreelister
You got a refund attribute point back every 250xp and could have a max of 24 refund attribute points at one time.
As far as the number one change for me is just each and every FREE addition to the game, very numerous free additions at that too. GJ A-Net. It, to me, is a total shocker and unheard of in any other game I have ever played that was free. All game companies release tweaks and nerfs, but A-Net just about released enough add-ons and extras to merit an expansion pack or you would think they would have saved all of that for good start on one, and it was all free.
Noticed I did say additions and not changes , although the removal of the point buy back system was a good change.

1) I'd say the free Sorrow's Furnace Update and everything that came in it.
2) The refund points stuff.
3) Anet's commitment to continued balancing of skills.

i'm going with the majority and saying the refund ppoints being taken away was definitely the best, the holiday events come in second and third would be sorrows furnace.

I completely disagree about the attribute points i accutually like it.
1) The reason i say it was so good before ,you could change up in the middle
of a mission, for instance you fighting your way somewhere and then
realize you need to run, so transfer everything to Str and tactics
in mid-stream.
You could change you setup in mid-battle if something wasnt working
1) it was easy to get back to 24, took maybe 30min of farming.
So because of that i say Sorrows was the best update.
And the worse one was
of course AoE 11-10, and the axe nerf, lost big on that one.

Here's mine in order:
1 - Kicking refund points.
2 - Faction and then the getting more per kill.
3 - Enemies skill bar under health.
I wasn't around when you couldn't put money in storage, but i saw it in the posts before. If I had been round when you couldn't, it would've made my top 3.
Edit - forgot refund points, so observer mode didn't make it :P
Edit 2 - hmm so seeing enemies skills bumped the AoE nerf outta it too.

1) All the balance changes (nature's renewal, changing quick shot, etc)
2) Sorrow's Furnace (that update was desperately needed to liven up the PvE part of the game)
3) Making signet of capture work on dead bosses rather than only right after a skill is used. (imagine trying to cap, say, practiced stance. Back then, you didn't get to see when the enemy used a stance )
I never had a huge problem with refund points, I just had to be careful not to change between marksmanship ranger and wilderness survival ranger to often. Not that I don't like unlimited refunds, I was just never really hit hard by the limit.
Same thing with allowing gold in the storage. At the time of the update, I don't think I had 10k to my name, heck, I don't think I had bothered to open up my storage yet. It too is another change that should probably be on my "top three" (I know, I know, this is supposed to be the best change, not top three ) but since I never suffered under it I cannot compare it with what it is now.
