Anonymity & Guild Wars = Obnoxious Behaviour
korcan
i was recently in kc when i saw someone spamming that they were giving away free ectos to the first person that could find them. ive been playing this game for quite a while and knew that they were on the roof and couldnt be reached so i wrote something in local chat warning people not to waste their time.
i thought that i was doing any newer players a favor by warning them about the practical joker but then i was attacked by random people telling me to "shutup" and "not to be a know it all" [these people were not the practical jokers friends as far as i could tell]. the smug, condescending remarks kinda surprised me but that type of behaviour seems to be getting worse and worse the longer i play this game. i could probably type out another 7-10 instances of immature, random stupidity but i cant be bothered atm.
anonymity seems to bring out the worst in people, especially in an mmo. local chat in an outpost can be quite bad but it doesnt even compare to pugs. pugs have got to be like 10 times worse. i swear, some things people say to a "noob" in a pug group are, well... bad, real bad.
i try "my best" to treat people in the internet world like i would treat someone in rl.
what types of obnoxious behaviour have u been exposed to while playing gw?
edit - written communication will be interrpreted differently by whomever is reading so misunderstandings happen but why not give someone the benefit of the doubt before devolving a conversation into a flame fest? this applies to forums and ig convos.

It has nothing to do with Guild Wars, it is just anonymity that makes people do often obnoxious things that they wouldn't do in real life.
Take solace in the fact that behind the anonymous name is probably a 14 year old on his parent's computer who should be doing his homework.

well havent we all been called a noob once?
just gotta get over it and move on. no time for losers like that who spend time making fun of people on an MMO because they are too inferior to people in the REAL world.

Just because it happens doesn't make it okay. It sucks that anonymity does that to people. It's silly, immature, and all around stupid. I too try to be as nice and helpful to people as I can be. There's a Taoist saying that I find to be seriously lacking in today's society. It goes something along the lines of "Be honest and truthful to all people- how else is the liar to know how to act?" It goes on similarly for other virtues and vices.
Anyway, that's enough out of me. Just keep being nice to people- it'll turn out well.

Well it's not just GW where it's bad, and well there's nothing you can do about it, it's always going to happen because there are lots of people that think it's funny/fun to do. Either lower yourself down to their level and fight back! Talking about how e-leet you are meaning that you are so e-leet that lesser peasants such as theirself shouldn't even be talking to you. Or ignore them.

I was playing random arenas and happened to be using a Wa/Mo just using mend ailment to get rid of conditions. My team lost and some guy started telling me all kinds of ****. H called me a "nub" and told me to kill myself, when I replied I hadn't played the game in a long time he continues with flames and told me to stop crying.
Of course it's the internet, but this guy was nuts. Would any sane person actually do that?
But anyway, " local chat off, trade chat off" is right, that's how I'll be playing.

Hi everyone. Well, it's not true that we can't do anything about them. We are able to report them to Anet and I suggest that is what you should do.
I know, I know it's a pain in the ****. And if you did it for all the rude immature people you came across you would never have time to play the game. But sometimes, for some people it just has to be done.

What you have to remember is the vast majority of these people that will call you a noob etc etc etc and be offensive and obnoxious in local or team chat are really fairly stupid and have an IQ level that is probably no higher than thier character level.
They are not the sharpest tools in the box but they are indeed tools and while they will throw profanity in your direction you can use your intelligence to have everyone in local chat who is reading laughing at them rather than with them.
Never start a fight, always finish one !

i really doubt it would work. if anything it would do the opposite. and the idiots would be in the high end of the scale while the nice people would (mostly) be in the low scale

ITs like the off topic area of Guild Wars.

Well I'm glad no Grotto bashing is going on in here. I haven't really hung out in Great Temple, but I'll give it a try see what I can add to it. Everyone that goes to Grotto and has heard the name Lenny in there, knows what I'm talking about when I say "add." I'm not bad, I'm totally innocent and clean I just stop all the naughtiness going on...
But that kind of stuff doesn't bother me, I'm one of those people who's to proud of his worthless in game achievements to be bothered by all people in game. Although sometimes they can get to you. Fight the power!
I should add that I've encountered a lot of what the OP says in Grotto and FoW PUG groups. Online bullies basically.

best configuration for Towns there is...
That what was so Fantastic in the alliance system, The fact that many friends may not be in your guild but are prob part of your alliance, so you can easily ignore the other masses unless absolutely desperate beyond all belief...
Unfortunately your story on the attitude from players in game are all too familiar.

True, anonymity breeds stupidity. Think prank calls before the invention of call tracers and caller ID etc. Or other stuff people do when they think noone's watching. Disgraceful, but true.
The irony here is that someone could be watching, but isn't. Imo, the problem is not anonymity per se, but rather that there are seemingly no repercussions. The automated response you get after reporting offences just contributes to the general feeling of "anything goes" (and, personally, pisses me off). Hell, if someone cybered me, I wanna know whether my report has actually been read! I also want to know exactly how many bricks (if any) they dropped on the dweeb! Ban, confiscate a few plat, delete an elite skill, whatever. A few more PlayNC employees in that department would go a long way imo.
But then we'd have threads on "the freedom of speech", "lighten up" threads and other such crap.

Yeah, Temple of Balth is just a place for all the 12-14 year olds to hang out and talk about stuff they aren't allowed to at school...

Although it has been quiet the past few times I've been there, managed to have an adult converstion the other day. with only a few mongs butting in.

Although I agree the vast majority of the problem here is that anonymity breeds bad behaviour, I wonder what portion of the problem stems from the fact this game is free. Does free online play equal a lesser quality of players? Does free online play allow people to feel they can take whatever risks they want with their own behaviour? Where a subscription fee might keep them in line a little more?

Yesterday I met someone who tried to sell me a charr carving as a minipet for 5k. When I didn't buy it he said he'll report me for wasting his time. Today some random guy whispered me asking to rush him through THK, after several polite refusals and pieces of solid advice he tells me to go F myself and threatens to kill me.

I've said this before, but it's one of my favourite quotes, and I'm going to trot it out here again:
It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.
People to spew ugly commentary, who use "creative spelling" to subvert the word filter and thereby offend even more, who invoke horrible, racist and sexist commentary, who talk casually about offensive acts, who threaten or harass, who scam, who cheat others, who abuse... all these people will be dealt with, fairly and appropriately, and especially if you will help us. Go to the Support Page on the official website. That's http://www.guildwars.com/support/ Click your region. Set up a PlayNC account -- it takes about three minutes. From then on, reporting is simple and quick. Give time and time zone, date, location, and exact spelling of those involve in behavior that we need to investigate. Send a screenshot if you like, though a screenshot isn't absolutely essential. We'll do the rest.
We're committed to making the gameworld a better place, and those who help us do so are champions for that noble cause: A fun and pleasant game, for all!

I would like to know what is the minimum punishment for offensive commentary? Just wondering because I used to report lots of them with screenshots and usually some of these same guys were there again writing all kind of crap just like before. Checked the places couple times per day. Expected them to have at least couple days ban.

Although lost causes would probably rack up enough marks on their account to warrant a permaban with enough reports... =\
TadaceAce
I'd be lying if I said I didn't sometimes just log on GW to piss people off. Were all sadistic sometimes... there is no punishment for being offensive... trust me I've said some really f'd up things and been reported many times and never had so much temp ban.
The Pointless
Erm. How could you actually tell you've been reported?
You can't say it's because someone said they did, becuase that could have just been an idle threat.

I agree with you, although today I had an experience that completely contradicts this. I feel that the GW community is getting better and better.
Rhedd
Every time I report someone, I add them to my friends list. I've reported 6-8 people, I'd guess, and have never seen even one of them log on again.
Now, I only report people for EXTREMELY bad behavior, but I'd have to say that I'm very pleased with Anet in this regard.
One thing that I wish everyone would do is actually report people when you say you're going to. Don't ever, EVER make an idle threat. The only thing that idle threats do is make people think that Anet doesn't care, and they'll act even worse in the future.
"LOLZ! That nub reported me and nuthin' happnd! FU ANET!"
Nobody wants that. Tell them they've been reported, then report them. It's easy and it works.

yes yes anonymity on the net makes people into jerks....
we've heard this a million times before. This topic is a waste of internet space and bandwidth imho.

Not all people are completely dishonest at least. I was in Beacon's D1, and there was a person spamming that anyone who could catch him would get 10k. I ignored him, guessing that he wouldn't really follow through and switched district. When I arrived in my new district, I noticed him there and guessed that he switched districts to avoid being caught. I opened trade with him and said "Caught you." Funny thing is, he actually gave me 10k.

I make sure if I ever tell someone I've reported them that I do. Mostly I don't tell them though.
Reporting players is very simple. It's all drop down menus and stuff like that. I take a screenshot, upload that (resaved as JPG to save time uploading), tell them the district, the region, the time (find out your GMT if you're not from the US). In retrospect I should probably tell them the persons name too, but I just use the screeny. :S
When it all comes down to it, if someone abuses you, you'll get over it. But don't you want them to pay?
