Some characters will need to retire eventually...

Really! How is it humanly possible to take ten different characters trough six campaigns?
It's inevitable there will come a point you just can't get every skill for every charater anymore. Unless you iterally play 24/24.
I love GW to no end, but i think it may become a must to take your existing characters as heroes so you are able to capture skills for them even wile you are not directly playing them...
Oh well, i'm just a little tired of a day long playing and i think i will have a stroke soon

They just need to only support 8 classes each campaign (6 core+2 new)

I agree, I think many people will retire some of their characters at some point. Personally, I know I won't have time to get all of mine through before the next chapter. I've already decided I'll likely only have time to play my monk and mesmer (+dervish and paragon) through Nightfall.
I think it's inevitable, but nothing bad. Thankfully Anet gives ways for characters to bypass chapters, so my retired characters may end up joining back up for the next campaign.

It just means you'll have to choose which characters to play now. I've picked 3 characters that I'll play in pve, and all my others have become storage. Since it's not necessary to keep pve characters pvp ready anymore there's really no point in wasting lots of time keeping them perfect. Besides, think about how much worse this is in games like WoW. Go make a post like this on a WoW forum and people will laugh at you for even trying.
Bale_Shadowscar
Perhaps the point of the game is not to get every skill for every character.
Besides, there is no law saying you have to complete everything in a chapter before the next one comes out.

I can't comprehend how some players delete a character because they don't like it's hair anymore just to take it trough all campaigns AGAIN.
Sarevok Thordin
This my friends is why they introduced PvP Edtions =p
broodijzer
yeah, every chapter I create new characters, and don't bring my older chars over. Happens, I play them eventually..
Engel the Fallen
For players, you will obviously have to pick who to bring through what. At this point, with 9 character slots, I have 4 PvP slots still because I cannot see bringing more than a few through Nightfall now.
icedragon981
Yea, I had this problem when Nightfall came out. I play very frequently but I ended up deleting my monk (my least favorite/played character) just to relieve some of the "OMG Gotta finishing everything in game!!!" pressure.
At the moment, I only have 5 PvE characters (Necro, Warrior, Ranger, Assassin and Paragon) and I've assigned them each a different secondary for unlocking skills for the other proffesions I don't play. I'm not much into getting every skill for every character, but I still want them unlocked. So far in Nightfall, I've gotten my Paragon to the second to last mission, (Came close to killing Shiro multiple times but to no avail) and have all my other characters at the Consulate Docks mission. (Except for my Ranger, but he's only to the Sanctuary.)

eventually you will learn to use your new characters and occasionaly play your old ones, this is wat i did
MSecorsky
I, for one, have my original ranger, who pretty much shows up for all the parties now and that's it. Has every hat made available so far.
Hmm... I guess he is retired, and knows it!

I recently bought a slot(will buy one more sometime), so I could have a ranger, next one I buy will be for mesmer. Currently, ranger is lvl 14 in Borlis Pass, and After I get most of the Titan quests done with it, Ill think about getting that last slot, then go through game again. THEN Ill get Factions, and start that with new character(1 slot for mule), then, after Factions character is done, replay game with Tyrians, then Repeat with Nightfall, ect, ect. I guess I dont bore easily.

Think of it this way:
You will never have nothing to do.
Every char is always gonna need something.
:P
Keeps you busy, if you get bored doing one thing on another continent, just jump to another character elsewhere.
Right now things im doing:
Dervish and Paragon in elona
Ranger and Necro in elona
Assassin in Cantha
+farming FOW/UW
+Alliance battles
+UAX'ing

I agree. It will take months to get each character through the Nightfall with 10 PvE characters so I'll have to concentrate on a select 3 or 4. I wish there was an easier way to get the elites on RP characters.

iterally play 24/24 yeah i can tell this is a serious topic made by a smart person >_>

I basically Just play my Ranger through the chapters, and I have a Monk and Warrior I usually just get far enough along to get to a farm spot or something.
I have a:
Necromancer
Paragon
Ritualist
That I never use anymore...NEVER...The necro is a Mule, and the paragon and ritualist are taking up space.
For me atleast there is NO replayability to the missions and storyline...

Its really not that hard to beat a campaign. If you have say 2 or 3 guildies with you you can easily clear Faction, Nightfall, and even Prophecies in no more than 2 days. My self and 3 guildies beat nightfall approximatly 34 hours after the game opened its servers(we could have done less but the glitch held us back). If you try hard enough and have the stamina to play for hours upon no end then you can stop complaining about the games being too long and just go hardcore roid rage and beast through the campiagins in 2 weeks with all of your characters.
Knightsaber Sith
You wouldn't have to retire a character. Maybe alternate half and half which characters go through new camapains.

1) I have to Henchie it. Because NONE of my Guildies or even many of my friends PVE. And Pugs are worse than henchies (both on my nerves, and skill wise).
2) Its just...BORING. The missions and such have no variations that are needed for Replayability, and all the quests are "Kill X number of Heket groups" "Go to X NPC" or "Defend X NPC from X number of Margonite groups" - None of which is really fun.
lg5000
I dunno.. I got 5 characters through factions, 3 had finished prophecies. 1 faction based character through prophecies from LA onwards, 1 tyrian based character to the 2nd to last mission in factions (still haven't done it) and 1 of those characters created in factions was created several times over to get the survivor title.
And I still had time to farm/do things other than playing gw, which to me, indicates that I should have no problems taking 8 characters through nightfall before the next chapter comes out... whether I do or not depends if I feel like playing a particular class though.

Just pick your favorite characters and get them through the game. There's no other solution, unless Anet gives us a way to skip portions of the game, which I highly doubt they'll ever do.
Alias_X
You raise a good point. Its annoying because sometimes I want to play a mission with a certain character but none of the others have made it that far in the campaign.

There's something about Prophecies that keeps me coming back there again and again. I have four Tyrian characters, one Canthan character that skipped 75% of Factions and went to Tyria instead. Now that Nightfall is out, I've made a Paragon who's lvl10 and my Tyrian mesmer is working on the Sunspear General rank... But guess what I spend most of my time in-game even now? Getting Tyrian cartographer and protector titles for that mesmer.
I don't really feel the need to finish everything with all the characters... but finishing stuff in Tyria feels a lot more interesting, ANet really hit the jackpot with Prophecies. I don't know yet how good replay value Nightfall will have, but I definitely won't be taking any more characters through Factions, one was more than enough.

Amity and Truth
Well, i've retired 6 Characters prior to the release.
1 Assassin
Simply because i did not want another "lol sins suck!" nightmare like in Factions.
1 Ritualist
zzZZzzzZZz. Cast Shelter. ZzzZZZzzzZZzz. Cast Union. ZzzzZz. Huh? Ah yes, yes move two metres to the left. ZzzZzz.
1 Ranger
She is on the wrong account and i won't be keeping up with buying two expansions every time so she had to go. Pity though.
1 Mesmer
Wrong account as well, though i seldomly played her
1 Necromancer
Wrong account, plus i rarely played her after the MM Nerf. I almost stopped playing her when HW and Spirit Bonder went on a rampage. I completely retired her when the AI was intentionally bugged by A-Net.
1 Warrior
Trusty warriorress, namegiver for the Board Account and... retired. Dervish is simply superior in playstyle to me.
That leaves me with 3 Characters and lots of free slots. Elementalist, Monk and Dervish though i'm currently feeling a bit of fatigue and weariness about GuildWars and how things are handled, thus will probably not even complete my title character (the Elementalist) besides completing the game with the ele and dervish as well.

u dont need to make characters every campign
i know what u feel cause i have 6 characters and no time to play them all and for factions i only completed 2 character: rit and my tyrian monk.
2nd for using ur characters as heroes this is old and many talked about it when they want to run their new characters into new cities.
so what the point of playing then? some of us have many things to do in the game and the rest complaining about there isn't a single matter to deal with after finishing the last mission!!
Advise: you can play to enjoy your free time but don't let the games take you away from your friend and useful things in life.

I have 11 characters... my original 4 tyrians I will finish all the campaigns with eventually; they have all finished the first and second chapters already. I have 4 canthans, one is a pure mule--my ranger, my rit completed factions and is almost done with prophecy---to the titan quests (2 more and final to do) and sf. I also have a mesmer who is just now getting played and a monk that has also finished factions and just got to the ring of fire in prophecy. She will not do the titan quests nor go back before lions arch like my rit did, but I will eventually get all the skills for her (have all the monk skills minus the elites in the RoF...2ndarys are another thing).
I have also created 3 nightfall characters, a dervish mule, a paragon that I got to level 20 but am unimpressed with so I wont be playing it for a while. and then another ele.
So that makes the 4 tyrians, 2 possibly 3 canthans--my monk is undecided- and 1 elonian to go thru nightfall with.....not the 11. Two of the mules will never see much action (the ranger got the dragon mask cause I had all the extra orbs)..and the devrish I made purely for dancing and mule-ing purposes.
Yeah, it is still alot of characters to get thru the game, but I think I can handle 6 or 7 without much problem since they all dont have to do all the starter elona quests.
Dont know if I will take the elonian ele back to the other chapters or not. That will be determined when I get the others thru and if I feel like it or not.

I am running 16 characters at the moment. Six Tyrian, two Canthan, two Elonian, and six Pre Ascalon. Will I be retiring any of them? I don't believe so, but at the same time I know that it will eventually become too overwhelming to be running each and every one of them through current and upcoming campains.
I just find getting every possible title for every single character to be a waste of time, time that I could allocate towards campain completion.
Pre Ascalon characters would probably be the only ones ever being "retired" if I could actually complete the feat of getting them all to level 20.

I realised this when Factions came out. I deleted 5 of my characters and kept only the favourites that I played the most and enjoy playing.
Now with Nightfall out I am having to rethink this again. I think I can realistically only have 1 main character now, I really don't want to play Nightfall again. Sunspear points, Lightbringer points, hero levels/equipment/skills... as much as I love my other characters and WANT to play it with them, I don't want to if it means doing that stuff again.

I create characters of the new professions each chapter, and play through with those, before bringing my new ones through. I only got half way through with my Prophecies necro and Ranger in Cantha, and am about half way through Elona with them too, but I completed the Factions storyline with my Ritualist, and I'm almost at the end of Nightfall on my Paragon.
The older characters have maintained interest though, because:
Prophecies characters - Underworld, UW, Tombs
Factions characters - Elite missions (although I'm never touching Factions again, I loathe it)

hm... i have 6 toons and i somehow i just stick to core classes
ranger: finished all
monk: finished ch 1 and 2, now working on ch 3
ele: finished ch1 and 2, waiting for her turn for ch 3
necro: finished ch1 and 2, waiting for his turn for ch 3
mesmer: finished prophecies, almost finished factions
warior: only lvl 12 work in progress on ch 1
once all those are through..il think of making a new class if im not fed up of gw by that time. but no one gets retired! i love my girls

I sorta have one of each class. That is, I have one of each created and now permanent but two (assassin and mesmer) are not level 20 yet.
Of those my monk is a pure mule - I never play her. If, one day, a smiter is finally given their due she will be played. But since the AI change she is mostly useless as a damage dealer (I hate support classes, all the others have a decent PvE damage dealing build). If it is a core class they are all Tyrian for unlocks.
My ele and necro are my two real classes. At one time my warrior was but I have since come to really enjoy those other two more then the others. I think a dervish is going to combine what I like of the two classes, but time will tell.
Since all are level 20, and nearly all have decent access to each chapter's areas I generally tend to unlock skills on the primary only (unless I want them as a secondary or if they are monk). I have no drive to complete all the games with them - for the most part after the initial leveling the heroes and their skill system are good enough. Each one is only as far as the furthest skill I want capped.
After that I just play whatever I feel like, maybe farm, maybe a new mission, maybe an old mission, who knows? I find myself happier this way than trying for perfection.

Everyone's retired besides my monk. And it's really not a bad thing, it's either ANet making the Guild Wars content even smaller then it is, making the time between chapters longer, or not caring about you having too few time to get all those characters through those campaigns. - I'd go for the last.

I don't know if I retire a character.
Currently I am getting 6 (out of 8) characters through Nightfall.
When I have seen mission/masters once, I know it and am able to repeat the mission with relative easy on the other characters.
I don't know what I will do with my Factions characters yet.
My Rt is storage right now and my Sin has no progress in Elona.
Not because of time (I have about 5 months left to finish before an other chapter arrives). Just because I'm not sure if I like them that much.
So perhaps those two will retire someday.

Well, now theres no reason to keep pve chars pvp ready, the only advantage pve chars have is good looking gear, so im just gonna play my Warr, Ele and Mesmer in nightfall, its not a bad thing, its just a shame to leave 3 chars behind that have all had a lot of time spent on them.
Kai Nui
I don't understand why anyone would play through such a shoddy game multiple times. I started one character 16 months ago, and today that's the only PVE character I have. All the rest are for 1 mule, 1 semi-played was going to be droks runner I never got around to playing, then all PVPs. I have a second account given to me by a friend and I made a monk simply because monks are needed. I'm just glad I had the foresight and apathy to only go through with one character, otherwise getting KOABD on multiple characters would be suicide.
Hyunsai
I ve got always one Character for PVE. He did faction, he will do Nightfall, and perhaps Prohecie later.
The second is for PVP character.
If I have problem with Stockage, a Third character, but unlikely...

Here's how I do it: Go through fast on damage dealer (Warrior/Elementalist/Ranger/Dervish/Assassin).
Go through sem-slow on support-oriented classes (necromancer, mesmer, paragon)
Go through taking sweet old time on fully support classes (Monk, Ritualist)
