you could use the night and day idea to change the monsters that appear, eg some appear in the night and some in the day, so the player has to go out at different times to get the items they want, also i love the scenery, i think the artists have a gift i could stand on a clif and look out and see the landscape, i wish i could see the twinkle of the towns and outposts in the dark along with the sunrise/sunset on the horizon.

It doesn't add anything to gameplay. Even more, GW is story driven. What would happen if you entered Riverside province at high noon. Sneaky night attack?
And mobs must never change. The point of the maps is that they are exactly repeatable every single time. It may seem strange, but that's a very important rationale behind map design. Using this aproach allows players to master an area without getting nasty surprises. This applies to all the mob spawns, including random pop-ups.
This is just one of those things that games must have in order to feel right, and experience has shown that over and over. Every game that used spawn randomization had to revert to static or semi-static spawns sooner or later.

It would be cool if explorable areas had this implemented, but for missions I think it shouldn't be in effect. Would add a nice feel to the game overall.

Great idea, would make my character feel a little more human. Plus i am definately for the change of monster during day/night that would be incredible. Imagine re-doing some of the old prophecies missions during the night with random monsters. Great.
I know this may sound crazy and a little unfeasible. But imagine the possiblity of this on PvP, where each team could have a torch bearer, and the rest of the map virtually dark. The opposing team cannot see your stat bar unless you are within some kind of light. Stealth maps ftw!!!

Good idea, nothing better than taking shadowmere to the imperial city at sunrise... oops wrong game

I would say yes to having night and day in cities/outposts, however the story does require certain maps to be either day or night for the story to take place in. And have you thought about the dark maps like the Kurzick forests? How would people see?

anywaz, i think this would be nice, not sure how it could work out but if it could id welcome it

A day & night cycle and weather (as long as it isn't half-arsed) would make such a huge difference to the game. Imagine Kaineng lit up in the night with oriental lighting. Or the suggested and worn path through an Explorable lit up, but the rest of the area (where you find bosses and their delicious elite skills) intimidatingly dark. Insect mobs that have glowing patterns that resemble a face on their wings when aggroed to scare away predators. A hero ranger that predicts rain one minute before it falls. I want to read about 2 random people who sat on Anvil Rock and endured the snowstorm in order to witness sunrise, and how they felt they experienced something. I want to watch the top 2 guilds go at each other in a thunderstorm and enduring heavy rain.
I want to feel like what I'm going through is an ordeal and not a short stroll to the next mission.
How on earth does Riverside Province prove this implausible? Where's you imagination? There's no reason why Anet couldn't use such a system for in-mission scripted events. Riverside Province would start out dark but as soon as you made it past the last 2 towers to take on the boss, sunrise is triggered. You would feel like you were there all night. Missions are set-pieces and always will be, why not use that to their advantage?

The main proble are the landscape shadows.
They are not dinamically created. They are 'painted' like another texture.
So how would you make the sun move in the sky without changing those maps?
Hm... without those landscape shadows it's easy and possible, with them...
Adding day and night would be a problem.

Very hard coding, that's for sure, but it would be amazing.
And maybe implement lamps along paths in explorable areas. Then we could see
And weather as well, that would be amazing. That would make guild wars real, make it come more alive.

In any case, I still like the idea. Though the effect on the missions would be interesting. As someone said about Riverside Province, high noon sneak attack?

I like the idea of it having it on its own timeline though, I'd hate to always be playing at night.

BUT this would encourage more nightplay just because of smaller aggro circles. Runners would play at night because it would make their job easier. Questers would rather play at night to get exp faster without slowing down for nasty agros ect. but i'd still love it

there could be certain large quests that could only be completed at night and if you dont complete them by dawn you fail, could be fun

If a day/night cycle is introduced, then the same monsters must appear in the same places, regardless of whatever time of day it is. My main rationale behind saying this is because some of us have jobs, college, and/or social lives that prevent us from playing at certain times of day. If we can't play at the times that monsters and their drops/experience are the most ideal for our characters, then we suddenly become disadvantaged compared to those who have more free time to play.
What I like about this game is that it allows everyone to play on a level playing field, and everyone has exactly the same opportunities. If adding a day/night cycle does anything other than add an extra cosmetic visual effect to the game, then it would go against that.

day/night cycle is great idea but it should not base on real time, maybe something like 1 hour (real time) = GW 1 d/n cycle
I highly doubt d/n cycle will ever add to Guild Wars, in order to make this change that mean Anet have to add more content from every map in the game including current chapters that has been released. They are not going to make such huge change to the entire world of Guild Wars for nothing unless it is a new feature like Hero in Nightfall that they throw into the new chapter of Guild Wars which will attract more GW fans to purchase the expansion pack. Also it wouldn't make sense at all if d/n cycle only apply in the new chapters of Guild Wars but not in Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall.

I'd be preeeeetty pi^^ed if i was constantly under night.
Edit:
expanding on that, even if Servers have their own time, some servers have people from other countries, and countries frequently also have their own time zones, be it small or large difference.
I, for example, am Australian and using USA's server, i dont want to be under their night sky all the time >_<

/signed, for just a day/night cycle, anyway. Time specific mobs would be a hassle; finding time to play is hard enough as it is already for me, much less with time constraints on certain aspects of the game.

cant you guys see? its so simple for a day and night cycle it doesent have to be real time cycle, it can be a made up guild wars time cycle.
so because elona is just a suthorn part of tyria then this means they wil have the same time cycle. but because cantha is far to the south when it is day time in cantha it is night time in tyria/elona and ofcourse this method works vice versa.

This would be great for chapter 4. I'd want it to be Guild Wars cycle though, since real-life cycle wouldn't be as fun and wouldn't let players experience the full day if they only play during a certain point of the real day.

One of the things I like about Guild Wars is how the weather never changes for any given place. I hated night cycles in other games because they made it harder for me to see things. I like what's kicking my butt to be very well lit.

When I played World of Warcraft (spit) I ended up playing in the dark most of the time and it did my head in. Would be happier if it was a false sense of time and day/night passed in a few hours instead of realtime.

I think that adding this feature would refresh the areas in the first and second campaigns . I think the desert sky in and around the Arid Sea would look awesome , especially with a full moon
I also think the International Districts could use GMT so everyone using it would be on the same page.

I think a day/ night cycle would be cool but it would also be of great point of disagreement as to what time the changes should be and would cause Anet great problems with coding the Shadows and terrain maps since Gw is vertically challenged and if u notice 99% of the world ur shadow goes to the edge of a cliff but u cant because anet has coded the landscape to only cope with those specific shadows.

I've always thought a night cycle would be cool, but the other suggestions the OP mentioned would make the game even better! A smaller aggro bubble, different creatures or even sleeping creatures would be wild. I'd play at night just for the unique fun it would add to the game.

It would be fun to play at different times of day, but i don't think anet will implement day cycle cause i think this sort of idea should have been brought up in the first stages of development of GW.

It makes things more realistic.
I came to GW from WOW and miss this. I liked seeing the sunset/sunrise in WOW and chatting with friends in the capitals during the night, but I didn't like fighting in the dark. It was so gloomy and dismal. I had chars in servers with time zones 12 hours off so that a char could fight in the daylight while I was fighting sleep at night.
Perhaps this could be implimented only in the towns and outpost districts, and instead of American and International, the districts could be divided into the time zones in which most players are located. Then everybody would magically jump into the daylight when they go to fight.

Just why should we have a day/night cycle? GW has flat earth and no rotating sun. The sun doesn't shine on some part of the world. Cmon..this is a fantasy world, not the real Earth. It doesn't need to have everything the Earth has.
