(NOTE: Not a thread to discuss how to kill Mallyx. There are other threads for that.)

Today, a German guild killed Mallyx the Unyielding. (although the method which they used is still unknown). Apparently after Mallyx dies, a chest spawns, which gives the Green items.

He apparently drops one for every party member, two of which are pictured:

Do those skins look familiar? Yes!

The Recurve has the skin of an Azure Recurve Bow and the Maul has the skin of an Igneous Hammer.

Mallyx is the most difficult enemy in the entire game, yet he doesn't have unique weapons?! What happened to the art designers who made Kanaxai's Axe and Urgoz's Longbow?

And that's not the worst part.

After Mallyx dies, the "Mallyx the Unyielding" quest is obviously finished. However, there's no fanfare, no true "Elite Mission." But there's one thing:

You get to do the quest again!

What?!

And since the only way to fight Mallyx is through the quest, you must complete each of the 4 areas again just to be able to get more greens!

This is an insult. You get to do the entire Domain of Anguish again. And again. And again. To what extent? We need a Sisphysus NPC...

According to Gaile's Dev Update, this is intended. You get to do DoA until your eyes bleed, you get your Armbraces, then you are happy. I'm not happy.

I am sure that german guild are just very good at photoshop, but not good enough to make new weapon icons

Funny how they just recycled skins for his drops too. You'd think something that difficult would drop something truly unique looking.

You have screen shots of two items, it is possible that at least one of the items he drops does have a unique skin. Kanaxai's axe was unique, but the others were recycled.

Very disappointing

It seems like I won't be revisiting DoA anytime soon.

edit: Meh, I took a closer look at the weapons and it appears they are photoshopped. Note the pixels around the stats of Mallyx's weapons.

Not so sure ,look at the background color over the "Mally'x Maul" green text ,it's like red ,like the above weapon ,but not like the left side of the picture.

Yeah do you have a full list complete with pictures of what he drops? or is it only those two.....

Come on guys, let's be realistic here.

It is only skin. I applaud Anet for taking a departure from what other companies are doing, instead of giving players better and better loot to grind for, they consistently stomp it into your face just how superficial their game is. You only grind for your skin. Rewards in Guild Wars is skin deep, as a game should be.

Bravo Anet! Keep up the good work! I look forward to more "skin depth" chapters in the future

EDIT: Hang on..i was looking at the text behind the bow's text..that is the trade window font. Why photoshop it if it is though..gonna be found out anyway O_o..maybe it's compression causing that?

Actually, I'm glad that two-thirds of the weapons aren't for one-tenth of the professions. I'm tired of warriors getting all the goodies while spellcasters get left out

it has to do with the way the images were saved. look at this...

the top is an image copied from another image saved as a .jpeg (this reduces quality in order to be able to upload larger images into the internet)

the bottum image is copied from a .bmp (original copy basically)

this is all one image, saved as a .bmp - the top (.jpeg) is obviously real (because i made this image) but shows the "dots" around the mods because its original was saved in a .jpeg format. yet the lower image does not show these "dots" because its original was a .bmp

Tookis, I saved the Koosun staff as a jpeg and no pixels around it. And than the huge picture I showed was also a jpeg and still no pixels around the staff.

edit: But than again I'm not an expert when it comes to distinguishing between real guild wars images and fake ones. The items just seemed to stick out way to much.

If this is true then honestly I now see the error of my ways and see that they did an outstanding job. The prize should be about the challenge of getting to the end that’s what everyone asked for and not what he drops. I’ve always felt that if you wanted to get to the elite mission you should always have to go back to the starting point and earn you way back.

ah, but the original of the mallyx was a jpeg as well. and saving into a jpeg 2x makes the dumbed down-ness of it appear 2x as much. so compare like this. if i resave my original proof into a jpeg as well. it will appear more fake yet the bottum image should not be affected too much.

yet zoom in closer on the "better" one and you will see it too has been dumbed down, yet its messed up pixels are on a smaller scale because the image was not jpeg-ed, increased in size, then jpeg-ed again.

the image of the zoomed in jpeg-ed bmp is saved as a bmp to keep it as original as possible.

if u want i can go into more detail but these items r not photoshopped

The compression of .jpeg is variable, it can be very lossy or not as lossy. Saving the same image twice at the same quality shouldn't double the loss.

it does. compare the .jpeg section of the .bmp - and the .jpeg section of the .jpeg

If I understand you, you are saying if I am working on an image in JPEG format over a period of 5 days, and each day I resave it, it will eventually have 5x worse quality?

That is why Koosun staff looks similar to an original .bmp and yours look pixelated

Correct. Every time you save it, the quality that was shaved off by the compression is gone for good, and now your current save is the "best" quality you have.

Always work on a lossless format, and export to a lossy format when you're done. ^_^

yes. if you make a small image. increase its size and save it as a jpeg. then go to save as - and save it again. repeat that. each time you will notice its quality will decrease - it eventually stops at about 5-8 saves though. it will not effect an image that is just being saved. but in this case the images were taken from other jpeg's and SAVED AS again. which does effect the quality.

edit** you make it large so the pixels changes are easier to see.

Having seen the crappy drops you get for killing the ultimate boss in gw , i;m afraid its the last nail in the coffin for me. No reason to carry on playing since anet went anti farming and I know a lot of other players who maybe realise that world of warcraft is where its at.

Im off for my 14 day free trial of wow,,,,,,,,,,

Well...This kinda sucks, huh?

Don't get me wrong, I love dungeon crawling. I can't wait to play the Domain just to be there. But those aren't fun skins...And cool weapons are an awesome reward.

However, it's very cool that they drop for everyone. They get kudos for that.

the sooner you realize that GW is not about drops, the sooner you understand why the drops are crappy.

Yeah you are right I saved an image 5 times, and there was a slight change.

Sorry back on topic > yeah Mallyx drops the same as any other monster could this is Guild Wars.
