Wintergreens: what you got and why
KamikazeChicken
I'm still disappointed the staff has neither +eng or %recharge. It's the only weapon I wanted, but it's entirely useless. I hope they update the staff to 10/20% otherwise I'll just get the shield.

I got all the quest rewards and dozens of each candy cane. Hoping to sell them in a few months and make some nice gold.

I got the staff first thinking it would make a nice weapon for all my casters, later I noticed no energy bonus nor HSR 20% was on it. What a waste of pick.
I also got the spear for the same reasons OP has mentioned.

to be honest I was actually thinking these wintergreen items would be max dmg (with a req), imo its stupid, these items have no use to me.
I was planning to make some perfect weapons of them for my characters but now its just meh...
all these candy cane weapons are fun but actually it just fills my storage (cause i like to collect everything) and I was happy finally we could use something of these items as a real item, see it as a cool weapon skin, nothing overpowered about it...
I think I will get the spear then for my monk (not that it matters much since I got already +5 en, 20% enchant sword)
So I am a bit dissapointed, they really made me think these wintergreen items would have a use for everyone, now it will just fill my storage a bit more.
me = dissapointed

I opened up a ticket with them about this. I entered, got two of them right but the agent acts like I did not play. I thought Gail also mentioned that since we helped them with testing this new system out they would give eveybody a wintergreen weapon who played? Also did you see on the tournament site that there will be a chance to win more stuff in Febuuary? Quote "Watch for your next chance to win prizes in late February 2007!"

meh... i think i'm skipping the feb 2007 "prizes" .. prob some weak + lousy items like the candy weapons...
i entered it coz i thought it would be max dmg, since they suggested its "inscrible" ... pfffttt
its like making us wait for 1mth+ .. letting us anticipate, and they came out with junks...
me = disappointed too.

Count me in on being one of the unlucky few that the Tournament guy won't give any weapons to. *mutters*

Being the analytical guy that I am, I wanted to see if any of these weapons could have an actual functional use in game. As such, I did a comparison to the maximum damage on other no requirement, blue inscribable Nightfall weapons in making my selection. Here's the results:
Sword 8-10 (vs 10-10)
Axe 6-12 (vs 10-10)
Hammer 11-15 (vs 15-15)
Shortbow 9-13 (vs. 15-15)
Daggers 3-7 (vs 5-5)
Spear 9-13(???) (vs 10-10)
Scythe 8-17 (vs 15-15)
Wand 7-11 (vs. 10-10)
Staff 7-11 (vs. 10-10)
Shield 8 Armor (vs. 8 Armor)
Focus +6 EN (vs. +5 EN)
Spear is the only one that I don't have final data on for normal weapons.
Based on that, the Bow seems like the best choice, since it provides a guaranteed damage greater than any other non-requirement bow.
Wand also is very appealing for PvP (mainly for adrenaline building for warriors, since it has a recurve bow range), since the customized damage of 12-12 is arguably better than the customized median damage for the no requirement version of the wand of 9-13.
Spear seems to be a favorite choice at the moment, although it appears that the no requirement version is actually superior to the wintergreen weapon. The rarity of finding a blue inscribable no requirement spear factors into that equation, however.
The shield is identical to the no requirement version, although rarity comes into play again.
Hammer would also be appealing, although there are very few hammer-based builds that would use a no requirement weapon.
All other items really are there for cosmetic show...

And who uses no req items ?? ( i know monks, etc for very specific moments in a battle but thats not rly a real use...)
K, its just an item not rly a big deal but I just expected waaaay more from this special thingy. We did some effort (and yes it was fun) and what do we get... some crappy candy cane weapon wich is in green but wich you still can't use...
It's like joining a contest where you can win a car with and when you win it they send you a miniature car to put on your desk.
I don't see what the problem is with max dmg weapons with req...
Darq
Heh, I chose a sword and sheild, mainly because they look really cool, when someone said it was a Wintergreen Longbow I nearly had a heart attack, I've always wanted a nice longbow to lure with. Overall I'm happy with it, may decide to mod them too. I like playing Meleemancer in Alliance Battles, and he just got a cool skinned sheild.
Vilaptca
So you're all disappointed that you got exactly what they told you we would be getting. Candy cane weapons that are inscribable. They never said max damage.
If you particapted in last years Wintersday, and really even this one, and got any candy cane weapons from either of them, you would have known this was going to be the same. The only reason anyone should be disappointed with this, is that they made up their own idea of how it was going to be, even when the facts were right in front of them. Its not ANets fault that you expected more than you were told you were going to get.
Making these inscribable and upgradeable does actually have its uses, so its not like these are as completely useless as the regular candy cane weapons.

Casters in PvP. Having a shield that provides a little bit of armor (8) and a health bonus/condition reduction/damage reduction is a bonus when that caster isn't hurting for energy and needs to retreat quickly.
Warriors in PvP. Building adrenaline so that they can charge in and use their adrenaline-based attack skills immediately vastly improves the chance of a spike.
Ranger secondaries. Rangers have some of the best interrupts in the game, but sometimes players prefer to use the weapon of their primary profession. A quick switch to a bow interrupt skill requires having a bow equipped - and having that bow do a little bit of damage is a boon.

I got the spear, which I'm planning on modding with +5e, +20% longer enchants. Perfect for my Prot monk, since all the other spear skins are so bland and boring.

In other words (no requirement/halved max):
Sword: 8-10 versus 7-11
Axe: 6-12 versus 3-14
Hammer: 11-15 versus 9-17
Bow: 9-13 versus 7-14
Daggers: 3-7 versus 3-7
Spear: 9-13 versus 7-13
Scythe: 8-17 versus 4-20
Wand: 7-11 versus 5-11
Staff: 7-11 versus 5-11
In almost every case, the no requirement weapon is equal to (or IMO better) than the halved max damage weapon. However, no matter what view you take, the comparison to the wintergreen weapon is about the same.

I decided on a sword for my second choice, I'll probably make it into a 20% enchant +5E caster weapon
As for the argument of using the shield, as far as I'm aware, using any 16 armour shield, for which you don't meet the requirement, gives you +8 anyways, so whilst a wintergreen would be no worse, it wouldn't be any better either...
Grais
Pretty sad that they are no different from peppermint weps aside from the color. They were being sold for 25k and down last night, Kurt the Slow, was offering an extremely RARE perfect wintergreen, thats a wintergreen with a 15^50 insig applied, I knew that guy was not very bright, but this was just hilarious.
carbajac
I got a shield because it's something I'll use and not just sit in my inventory taking up space.
Havre Fras
Wintergreen Staff because its something I can actually mod and use. The lack of the 20% recharge mod doesn't bother me at all so now its my main staff.
Darksun
Somehow i got 2 as well (I thought I got everything wrong)
So I wend with a shield & a sword. Simple, classic weapons. right now they are:
14^50 +23hp
20% reduced blind
I love going with my buddies out into Kryta with candy weapons & holiday hats and trying to kill stuff. It's just FUN! =) And it kind of adds replay value to old, easier missions. If they every make holiday armor, That'll be the icing on the cake!

one advice: don't get the bow. it's a short bow
Skuld
Axes and shield for my monk, axe because I dislike the sword and everyone else has a spear, plus I have axe mods already
Annoyed at those predictions, the amount of stuff I was 1-off.. >.<

Even though I guess one right it only let me get one weapon as oppossed to my earned two. Lol, well I just got a spear.
Edit: Ok right now my spear is +5 Energy. What other mods should I get to make it usable in a real situation?

try getting a 20% enchant or +30 life... they are cheaper for spear compared to sword // axe

Could someone confirm if Wintergreen Wand always make 10 damage every hit? (to 60 armor)

Spear (Crippling, -5 energy, +30hp)
Shield (+30hp, +10 vs. Slashing)
For my monk.

Eh, I gots me a spear cause I had a spare 20% enchant grip laying around. Plus, ya know, it's cute.

I got the staff because I'm massochistical and stupid. Of all the wintergreen weapons available, I chose the one that was nerfed.
(lacks the 20% recharge mod and the +10 energy mod)

What I meant is that it is the lowest of the bunch. The nerfed item.
Feel free to try to argue the logic of my words more. But if you want to try to teach me the value of the item I got, don't bother. I will gladly trade you for a wintergreen wand, however.
