Rollerbeetle Highscores

I didn't have that much trouble with rubberbanding and the game is really fun, although it will eventually grow boring like any game if you play it too much. Atm I'm in the top 10 and i hope I'll still be in the top 100 by the end of the event.
How you get a good time depends on race tactics, other players not interfering with you, luck with the boxes and the course you roll.

I'm extremely disappointed with the way this was handled. It had the potential to be a really nice feature, but the horrible lag and luck of the items really kills it. The constant rubberbanding really gets on my nerves.
Yabba
it`s nice for some rounds if you`ve nothing else to do.
but trying to get the gamer title or to break into the top100 ? nah, to much luck dependend and the rubberbanding really gets on my nerves after a while.
btw 456k with one super beetle was my best. without super beetle you can win some races ( i had 4 consec wins with no super) but canĀ“t get even close to the top100 scores.

I'll let you know mine once I finish a race. =_=' I normally don't lag much in GW except the first 10-20 seconds upon entering an instance, but I can't do anything in races.

Maybe you get more points by doing knockdowns?
Or maybe there are little stunts you can do?

I got 8 consecutive, with no top 100. then some stupid sin ruined it for me

Anyway I seriously haven't ran into the rubberbanding issue that alot of people have, guess im lucky on that part (best score is only 442k tho, no lucky with the powerups) To me its just like Mario Kart (which I loved), I'd love to have this as a perm feature. |
all that aside, its not the person who's better at the game that wins, its the person who gets the most luck on that round (the "right" powerups, and either no lag, or get lucky and cut a corner right so you don't rubberband)
i don't expect to get anywhere near the top 100, cause i fail in the lag part, i lag like crazy, and i rubberband backwards several times during a race,
normally I'm decent at racing games, but this minigame is a horrible replica of a racing game. it just does not work with the game mechanics.
in any normal racing game you slow down by turning, the tighter turn the more momentum you lose, in GW you can make a 180 degree turn and keep the momentum. this means that with no lag you can cut the best line through the track always.
in short, its a great idea. but horrible implementation.
EDIT: to the person above me (erfweiss) normally in a racing game people lag too, but you can drive on your own hardware and transmit your location to the server, here its the opposite, you tell what you're doing, and it doesn't matter what your computer thinks you're doing, if the server says you're stuck behind a rock a mile back, then you are stuck behind a rock a mile back. so even if arenanet is not directly responsible for the lag, their game coding is responsible for the effects that this lag causes
edit2: this wasn't meant offensively by the way

Ya after investigating (playing), i found out that not all lag is your fault nor is it in the gw client. In fact it is other people who contribute to your lag. Then i thought back to my days of playing halo and the effect known as standby-ing. Now i doubt this would work with gw, but what happens is basically your "lags" in telling the sever what its doing, in effect on someone else computer you see people flickering across the screen. This is called, well duh, lag jumping. So in effect you can actually do better while you lag because the game doesnt receive the full information it should. Now this isnt the greatest technical explanation, but ive witnessed it many times during this mini-game. Someone will be rolling then jump side to side then infront of you. Or when you get knocked down you will teleport back.
In short, someone with a bad connection and real lag, can screw up the game for everyone.

Its definately refreshing to see a new game type in GW.
And how the the engine interupts packet-loss does have an effect on the game. It sucks. So i suppose its a little bit of everyones fault.

im number 7 atm got 2 superbeetles and no kd's and a 12 consec
amish lifeguard
so the more you get consec. the more points you get? i thought it was just your speed each race!

Man at least share some tips namekey. I dont need to get top 10, i'd be happy with like 99.
And no you dont get points for consecutive wins. Unless they changed something from when i got my 12 streak, because my points didnt increase.

No you dont, my 12 consec didn have to do anything with my score.
btw .. yes getting a top 100 score is based on luck pretty much .. they key is to get a small lead from the beginning so you wont get in all the ram mania then hope for a good first ? box then race of never to be heard from again .. and off course 2 super roller beetles.

~450k is getting a perfect start and echo super, so you'll need 2x the combo for the 460k+ scores. I've had lots of people go to crates and sit on them trying to get the combo from the start, and those people are the ones who tend to be in the top 100 already.
amish lifeguard
yea, i tried that kamikaze, for 3 hours! got a 3x super beetle, but camped the boxes too long. you gotta get echo then super right away to get it good.
Tucks
It is kinda ridiculous that you need super beetles + no-one attacking you to score top 100. They might as well just given us a random prize draw.
Diddy bow
best i got was 450 cus i got 2 supers but some biatch kept knocking me over :/
ericdanie
I love the concept, but current GW network coding does not support a quick-responses minigame.

It's a fun mini-game. It can be brutal, but then that makes it more fun. I get hit with the rubberbanding here and there, it's just part of online gaming. I haven't made the top 100 and probably never will, but I've enjoyed playing, gaining tokens and gamer points. At least getting the points doesn't depend on your team, like the snowball arena, all you have to do is finish the race to get points and tokens.
The only suggestion I would have would be that they limit activation on a box a single time. That would put a stop the box campers.

To make it even more Fun, just stand on the boxes and keep kncoknig dwn one person..i did it, was there for the whole race knocking him down, was sooo funny..bet he was pissed off

There is a flaw in the record keeping, I know this will sound negative and there probably isn’t a way to fix it but right now the top 100 is really just the top 70 that means there are 30 people who should be on this but are not.
There shouldn’t be duplicate entries on the records, it should be just one listing. If that person bests their personal best time or best time then they should move up in ranking not be added to the list again moving someone who did make it off the list.

Why don't you just share and not be so selfish? I mean, wow, I'm sure you've never learned anything from someone else's posts here... nobody has ever revealed a secret that benefits you and you took... Maybe everyone should stop talking, and stop posting tips, and just brag?
raven214
I just got my own personal best... 445k .... in all the races I've done, I've only seen one person I can remember that got over 450k.
The fact that people can have multiple listings in the top 100 is pure crap too, unless further down listings are being recorded for reward purposes and just aren't being displayed.

My best of the day was 457K after trying for about five hours. I can win multiple races in a row but not get anywhere near the high scores. I initially thought that getting on the high score table was down to pure luck, but seeing how many people have multiple places in the top 100, there has to be more to it than just luck. I wish I knew what it was.
Having no luck getting a pig either LOL.. 220 tries so far - no piggy :-(

Well, i never get green ping, mine has always been yellow and Its so frustrating the way i keep teleporting back its not even fun anymore .
My ping never was an issue with pvp or pve, but in this mini game its just impossible to be competitive. I have no idea where the opponents are, i miss all the rams and get rammed out of nowhere.

448K is my best, 444K is my second best. Yesterday I was doing pretty good and placed most of the time, tonight it's awful.
//RogueNine
I can easily hit 455+ with no supers and no echos.. So far my best is 471890 with 2 supers no echos.

I like the race mini-game but I can't play it all.
Apparently my connection sucks this weekend. My usual ping average seems to be over 1.2k. That's just insane! I've never had such bad lag before, anywhere... doing anything.
I think I'll go play something that I can get better pings on (i.e. every other game I have ever played).

I zoned into the Races area, and went to start one, and I lagged like all get out so I thought something along the lines of a Profane Word coupled with the word "This" and never went back to the arenas..
Hengis
Well, the more I played this, the more I went back to my original thoughts that getting onto the leader board really is nothing more than luck.
Yes, you need to have some basic skill, but no amount of skill will compensate for not getting the right power-ups, or for getting ganked at exactly the wrong time.
You need:
A clean start - i.e. not getting targeted by other players.
A super-bettle or an echo in the first box (in the tunnel).
The corresponding opposite in the second or third box (in the water).
OR - The echo and the super-beetle together in the water.
To be away from the boxes in the water and have both the echo and the super-beetle at around 41-42 seconds.
Not to get targeted by other players for the remainder of the race.
No lag or rubber-banding during the whole race.
One more piece of luck (preferably another super-beetle in one of the boxes towards the end of the race).
After playing for around 12 hours over the weekend, I got almost all of these on my best run and scored around 469K, not quite enough for a top 100 place, but didn't get the last piece of luck needed.
Still, I gained around 1300 gamer points in total, and the corresponding amount of tokens LOL.
Although I really did enjoy the event, I would hope that any future mini-game, especially one that gives a prize for the best scores, would be based on skill alone and not an enormous element of pure luck.

My bestest run was:
-zero interaction of other players!
-no lags, no stops, no knockdowns!
-echo+super at cave, immediately!
-another super at cows (my jaw dropped)
-another echo at big water (stopped breathing)
-my mistake could have been not touching any more boxes after 5th gate
And the result was mere 465k
I estimate the chance for such a run to be 1 in 5000 or more.
I can't imagine how incredibly lucky must be a 470K++ run that makes top100
