At what point do you just say, "The heck with it."
NJudson
So at what point do you all say, "the heck with it" and just merchant weapons, mods, offhands...etc because you can't get any buyers? I'll admit that I'm not the most patient person, but it seems very, very difficult to find buyers while in game. I'm running low on inventory space and I have a fair amount of mods, runes, weapons and other various items that per the Ventari price check guides would be worth tens of thousands of gold. Really the only stuff I've been able to sell was a couple mini pets, Victo's Axe and a few FDS.
I guess I'm not overly concerned with trying to make a lot of money versus just getting rid of the stuff to clear inventory space, but its funny how I can try to sell things for 25%-50% of their suggested prices (based on Ventari forum) and not get a single bite.
Anyway, I'm nearly ready to merchant most of my mods and such because the lack of buyers out there. I was just curious how many people went ahead and just merchant a lot of their stuff even though they knew it was worth quite a lot more than what the merchant gets you.

Once the inscription system went live, selling became obsolete.
If you find a good weapon, post it on guru, bump every 24 hours, and hope to find a buyer.

I merch almost everything. It was hard enough selling before, but now it's pretty easy to make a "perfect" weapon with inscriptions.
I don't think I sold a weapon to another player since shortly after Factions came out and the Zodiac weapons were hot.

Changes to salvaging allowing you to select which mod you want and inscriptions killed the market. That which is left seems to be dominated by a select number of hardcore traders who'll close the deal before you send the first PM
And WTS rarely worked in the first place. Look for WTB if you want to sell fast.

I only keep what I see is worth selling. Because there are still things people want, you just have to sit and town then know what to keep and what not to keep. I merch most things or give them away though, because you basically have to give them away..to get rid of them.

High end items (Stats wise) are easier to get than ever, Nightfall probably doubled the available amount of green weapons, and they're available in practically any combination of mods between the three campaigns, so the value of gold weapons and seperate mods is dropping fast imo, especially in view of the mulititude of common green farming builds. So the only weapons you managed to sell were a green and a couple of FDSs? Not surprised, since an FDS is a popular skinned weapon without being priced to match crystallines and so on.
I don't usually bother selling mods or gold weapons any more: If you're not into skins over stats you won't buy them, and if you are into skins over stats you'll only want the latest fad skins like elemental swords...
Plus, trading spam is getting so bad now that a lot of people are wandering around with local and trade turned off, and you can't really blame them. Upshot: Unless / untill the trading system is improved, and as long as green weapons are easily obtainable, it's hardly worth selling your drops. I give mine away to friends or use them myself, its more satisfying in the end!
LifeInfusion
For mods/inscriptions I won't use...I just give them away to new players or alliance people...

I can count on one hand the times I've ever sold anything to someone other than the merchant. Just too much of a hassle.

Well, reading everyone's responses pretty much has deflated any remaining hope in trying to sell a lot of my junk. I will proceed with merchanting most of it. I know it sounds kinda dumb, but I still remember a long, long time ago when I got my first gold weapon and salvaged my first mod and being the pack rat that I am it's sort of hard to let that stuff go. However, this is ultimately just a game and that junk is just "collecting dust" so to speak anyway so here they go......
anna
I'm with you.
It comes down to inventory space and time.
If I think that I might use a weapon, I'll keep it regardless of market value. If that's not the case, I will generally merch a weapon if I believe that it's market value is less than 10k (meaning I'll advertise it at 5k-7k for a quick sell).
On inscriptions and mods... I usually keep the ones that I might use myself, or perfect mods which guru lists with a floor price of 2k (or even as low as 1k if I think that it's a particularly useful or hard-to-find mod). I'm sure I have some that are worth less tucked away on my mules, but I try to conserve inventory space when I can.
It's funny to advertise something at waaaaaay below market price in the trade channel. Sometimes I'll get 5-8 instant PM's such as "mine!", "i'll buy", "ok", or other similar short & easy to fire off responses.
When I'm rolling in money, I usually only ask for less than 60% of an items value. If I need money and don't mind waiting a little longer for a buyer, I'll bump the prices.
Oh... and if I'm chest running... all I really want to do is make back the money I spent on keys. Usually that means that I'll keep the ocassional high valued chest drop to sell later on the market. I merch the rest.

Honestly, anything that I believe I will get less than 5K for in a sale, I simply merchant. I figured out a while ago that in the time I spent trying to find a buyer, I normally could've made that much money (or more) by simply playing the game.
I can count on one hand how many Zealous at 14>50 weapons found their way to the merchant... ;(

I never bother trading anything unless they go easily for 15k or more (ie: usually only +30HP mods). Not worth the migraine of participating in trade spam. Better to just farm Ectos for money or Ectos for FOW armor rather than hang on to mods that only net chump change after being trade spammed. Something that must be trade spammed to be sold for 5k is not even worth taking up the inventory space to me.
cosyfiep
like has been said, worth is relative.....I might think that a staff wrapping of mastery 20% is worth a bunch ---to me, while the warrior next to me thinks its not worth the inventory space ---nor the salvaging of it in the first place. Guru is just a guild, not law-----many of the people playing have no idea about guru so quoting 'its what they said on guru' might mean the same as its what my 2nd grade teacher said.....take it in stride.....if you really want to sell and people just say its too much, ask what they would pay....at least you might get more than the merchant will pay you......or mech it and get the 25g.
Skye Marin
Trying to sell stuff in the game for high prices distracts me from playing the real game. I always sell well below market value and make good deals for my buyers. Most junk is just merchable, asside from a handful of perfect mods. If something is really rare (ie. Dead Sword), I'll throw it on Guru Auction.
arcanemacabre
Instead of merchanting, why not hold a mini-contest or give them away to newbies? I've often taken greens worth anywhere from 1k-10k, and headed to Shing Jea whispering lowbie characters to see if they want it - free. I've also done things like announced if someone can answer one trivia question, they get some random gold Blah Something-bow of Blah.
You can get rid of stuff fast doing that, and building friendships along the way. It makes you feel better in the end, and what, you missed out on that fabulous 300-400 gold the merchant would give you with a smile.
If you have a ton of mods, I find that making a sale thread listing them all here on GURU is the best. Especially if you sell for a good 25-30% less than the low PC in Ventari's.
The only things really worth selling in-game are golds and greens with estimated (low) PC's over 50k. Everything else is pretty much not worth the time.
Honestly, I don't sell often at all. In fact, I think I may have sold 3 items in-game over the past month. Two of which were mine and my wife's birthday mini's, and only because everyone was falling over themselves to buy up every mini thanks to the "minipet in town" update.

i did the second i realized in order to sell this item i would have to spend alot of time sitting in town auctioning it off. I used to try and sell weapons and got tired of sitting in town, im very impatient and like my money fast so i can get back out killing, questing, farming or wahtever it may be. I find you make money alot faster if you go around killing and merching with the occasional good drop you will sell for alot then trying to sell every gold you get.
creelie
Yeah, I merchant almost everything. If a perfect gold drops with a very beautiful skin that I don't remember seeing before, sometimes I'll see if it's rare. I even auctioned one thing here on Guru.
Usually I only wade into trade spam if I want to buy something simple, like trade contracts. Even then I'm bored to tears.

guild wars item worths are:
98% worthless items
2% dwarven, crystaline, ele sword, black dye, etc
There really is not much of a middle market.
It has gotten so bad that i could not give away some of my minipets (char shaman, jade armor, mini pig)
There have been countless occasions that i have just given away supposed 100k items to friends and guildeis
This has been the way of guild wars since the introduction of the inscriptions.
If you really want to make money. Either chest run and sell items at half price of what they price check for here.
Or farm rare materials
but most people here will just assume to tell you to "go play wow"... because that seems to be the common solution for any problem with guild wars these days

The only time I can sell anything is during events when everyone decides to work on titles. Alcohol, and sugar items went fast on Cantha New Year. Anything else fuggeddabout it.
Mini pets sell sometimes, but I prefer to keep them all >=)
I would gladly take those off your hands =D. I promise to give them a new home, and I wouldn't resell them.

I almost started to dabble in selling stuff, but it just wasn't worth it. Everyone wants to look, and no one wants to buy. Besides selling would make me a hypocrit since I do not buy from people. End result is well armed heroes... very well armed.
Feminist Terrorist
I stopped trading because I couldn't get buyers for my stuff. I'd really rather be playing than standing around trying to offload items. The really bad part is now that I have all these heros, I need more stuff, but what I need never drops for me.

I put stuff up on GWG auctions; it only takes minutes to list it, then I just sit back and wait for someone to buy it. If no one buys it, I lower the price a couple of times, and if no one still buys it, I either sell to merch or slap a "show me the money" inscription on THEN merch it.
kriswish
I either give to hero's, give away or merch. I can't sit in town for 5 minutes, much less try and sell something.
Zedd Kun
It's impossible to sell stuff for the price it's worth, I always sell my stuff 20-30% cheaper, or else I would have to stay in a town forever.. Please PLEASE give us something, Anet!!

I merch when I figure I can make more doing other things than the time it would take me to sell. Which means nearly everything goes to the merchant. If I get a gold that I do not know the price of (and that is common as I do not keep up with prices) I check the auctions here. If I were to get one worth 20k+ I would auction it, but alas I have not had the pleasure of doing so. Actually, more than likely, it would go to one of my characters of that class - but lets say I found one that I have no want of then I would do the above. I *do* have a number of +20% enchant axe mods that used to be worth a lot, now they are just waiting until I find an axe worth putting them on (my warrior farmer has had two for a LONG time).
I have found a few perfect golds that were worth a tidy sum when I did pay some attention (well before the release of factions, and in both cases I found them in prophecies where they still are really rare), get excited, and then find out that they are worthless now and drop like candy elsewhere (or are in nightfall and inscribeable) - ho hum, such is life. I have enough anyway from just plain farming and playing the game.
In the cases of "perfect" golds (including a low req) that my heroes can not use I go to Ascalon City and give it away to low leveled characters only. I hate seeing them go into a bit bucket. The other two chapters get max damage weapons faster - I always hope I'm helping someone who doesn't have 1000k and 25 stacks of ecto in storage so that it is used and appreciated. But even then, I would rather it go there than into /dev/null

Stocking up for the heroes for Ch.4...
good thing Melonni can just use the PBP scythe. I never get good scythes.
but I've amassed a pretty darned big smattering of hero weapons waiting for Ch. 4 folks. Sooner or later my mules will overflow though.

as for me i'm so patient..sometimes i have some gold weapons rotting in my storage or in my mule for 3 or 4 months and BAM i find buyer for very nice profit...trading in guild wars needs to be patient, also the key of trading is to know which is worthless and which is not without needing to ask someone.
Tiny Killer
I pretty much merch everything all of the time unless I get a very rare, high dollar item. In the long run, I feel that I make more by merching and going back out quickly than by standing in town doing the "WTS" thing.
holababe
I just merch anything less than a perfect/rare and put the rest on Guru. If nobody buys then it goes to a hero or an alt.
ryanryanryan0310
The best thing to do is have a mule sale. Just sell everything at a rock bottom price instead of merching. Have a 2-3k b/o on sale only. You'll clear space and make some money.
freekedoutfish
90% of the time. Im lucky to ever find a buyer for anything I sell. Even when I knock the price stuidly low. The market basically sucks and I usually always resort to using merchants to sell items.
Etta
I said to heck with it a long time ago, shortly after faction came out. Selling for me is worst than getting a bad pugs, for those who stick with it and made a big $ out of it, good for them. if i found a good drop that i don't use on my char, the heroes will take them.

We need an Auction House ~____~ where we just put the items on there and go lvl or sleep xD

I only hang on to the stuff that I "know" is valuable and just keep my eye out for buyers as I'm passing through towns and outposts. But even if you have good stuff it sometimes is a big hassle finding a buyer and not worth it. Gold per unit of time is the key, and also low balling the price. I price stuff to move which cuts down on the time.

With all respect to the guys who put together the price listings on Guru here, but I think the Guru listings are part of the problem.
For one, I always have the feeling that it's based on maybe US servers only and it seems that recently there has been an influx of rare skins that are generally unwanted.
Playing in Europe I see that as far as golds are concerned you generally need to take the guru listins and cut them in half or go just below the low end. Example: listing is 20-40k on Guru...sell price is 15-20k or wait a really long time by which time the listing likely will have gone down.
Example of unwanted rare skins: Ancient Shield...was listed with req 9 tactics at 100-150k and now 60-80k. I sold mine with perfect stats and mods for 45k.
General complaint: It's so small...hence unwanted.
So I only trade things I know have a good chance on selling, like specific greens (Exalted Aegis for example) knowing full well that the greens market has plumetted but at least you know what you can expect.
There are so many rare gold skins now that rare skins as a group are no longer rare. Anybody can have a rare...just a different one.
And what happened to the market? People who don't have so much money want cheap only and will not spend more than 10-20k on an item. People who do have lots of cash are now eyeing the really expensive stuff that runs into 1 million+ items...FoW armour, DoA golds that you get with the armbrace of truth or magma shield for example....Everything in between those 2 is a crashed market and will end up on the 20k or less side of things. Only a few skins will remain higher because they are wanted skins for swords and warrior shields mostly, but only a few.
My point...don't trust the word 'rare' ...it's better to see which few skins are actually wanted by people, the rest will go down to the 20k or less group, rare or not

Well, it may not really help trading too much, but I think it would be nice to be able (somehow) to move your items to and from your characters easier than it is now. I think there is only 20 slots in storage (not including materials storage) so you have to do a lot of moving around and switching back and forth between characters. That gets really old fast. I try to keep specific characters that I don't play often with specific and like items, but over time items between all 5 of my characters gets jumbled around. Unfortunately I have 2-3 mules, but I like to play all my characters from time to time.
I think it would be nice to have access to account inventory (not just storage) rather than just a character inventory, but that's not the way it is so oh well....
