The Next Major Update ?!!
Ekelon
Yes, it is as simply as turning it completely off (no, not just turning off volume). You could simply have a box in the F11 options that says, "Enable Voice Chat". Problem solved.
This seems like a really nice idea, for those of us who would rather communicate in voice chat instead of typing. I do admit though, that it would reveal to us the many males posing as females in the game though, haha, granted that they have a microphone. :P

Well it’s good to see that there adding this feature and I agree they will have a mute option to it. As for price that NCsoft will have it out for; I say $0, for that executive was right the voice system has been implemented into games before. Games like Counter Strike and URU Live has this option in their games, and they do not charge extra for it.

Listening to voice chat isn't terribly optional if you've ever tried that with vent. If anyone is leading in voice chat, you will be confused and left behind if you aren't listening in.
Wonder if that is what the textchat option is for? Good luck getting that to be terribly accurate though...

Guyz, the people working on this are PROS. They know what they are doing, of course they will account for all advantages and disadvantages.

Yea, seriously. What has Anet ever done to you other than offering a great game?

Lord-UWR's misguided optimism aside, I do disagree with tomahawk, but I do not support him.
NCSoft is really going-for-broke here. They are taking too mmuch of a risk.

I think is not "integrated" to game, it's just a tool like TS or Vent, but from NSoft. Maybe part of "PlayNC Launcher" tool.

How is this different from any other game with VoIP?
People always whine and complain, how is this any different?
There are some people who don't use VoIP period and they are on broadband, so I don't see how some kind of communication loss would happen. Especially when the service is able to do TEXT AND VOICE CHAT. Sounds like a lot of hot air over nothing.
People who lean heavily on VoIP already use TS or Ventrilio. This service is just another option to use. People who never tried it will have a chance to use an official NCSoft version.
People who can't or won't use it will just turn it off like any other person with a brain who can choose to.

I'm not averse to it, I'm in favor of it. I just hope it doesn't screw text chat.
Knightsaber Sith
I can't see it possibly replacing text chat. It'll probably only get used in areas like HoH and elite missions. As well as just chatting with friends and guildies of course.
wingzro
If the people I'm playing with can't even read or take the time to read the text chat, then I'd rather not play with them.

Though I know it can be difficult to get for some 56k is in mostly in the past Retribution X and I'm surprised Guild Wars works with it. That said, it'll either be very good and helpful or a waste as the VoIP's for many games are often low quality and I'll take a high quality vent server over, say the in game talk in Counter Strike Source.

For completely selfish reasons, I'd prefer it not be in the game. Selfish reason being my computer is rather old and adding more bloat to Guild Wars doesn't make me happy. And Ventrilo works just fine, and better than any in-game option, probably. The only downside to Ventrilo is the need for a server.
Operations
Yeah, I see this as another "$10 Voice Chat" feature in the online store...

(TO add to that little quip, 56k is the minimum and not the recommended. Also the box says "Internet Connection" but doesn't state the speed. VoIP is not apart of the minimum required for the game so your argument is useless as it doesn't affect the minimum to the slightest degree.)
If 56k don't support it, then so be it. But it still won't stop those who are able from using it. And that means that it isn't a bad addition to the game regardless.
Gotta love choice. Its a beautiful thing.

#1. It won't be free.
#2. It not be for anything other than party chat.
#3. It will be laggier and of lower quality than TS and Vent.
#4. Its already too late for Guild Wars.
I recommend that they perfect the voicechat system for the next MMORPG they release.
I also think that people would not want to play as much when they realized how young the vast majority of players are in the game. Just the thought being required to be in voicechat to get into the only pug party in a town and having to listen to all those prepubescent premadonnas try to order me around makes my skin crawl.
I think I will stick with my heros regardless of what NC Soft does.

would voip not cause even more lag than we already get?

Well, if you are over 21 years old, you shouldn't even play GW. You should get a life for goodness' sake. Ok, just a little over reaction. But seriously, get a life.
Just kidding. However, it is simply an inevideble fact that a LOT of games are indeed played by people under 17. And there is nothing no one can do about it other than to deal with it.

I've actually found that most gaming magazines actually have a target audience in the mid to late 20's (found out through the editor's notes and letters pages of various magazines.) That suggests that most games might be trying to get the dollars of those with more earning potential and long ingrained habits.
I admit, I could be wrong, who really knows. Teens have no real bills yet, and can easily waste money, but at the same time, they make very little.

Is this just talking into a microphone and the computer typing out text according to what you are saying? We wouldn't be hearing their voices, just seeing text in the chat box. |
It would make sense to have it as part of team channel, guild channel, alliance channel....I wouldn't want it on local or trade unless there was a filter option.

i know this might be slightly off-topic, but i wanted to bring it up anyways, see if anybody has an explanation and can enlighten me
i noticed something like that aswell ... for example, i turned my music totally down, but that doesn't mean its "off" like one would expect, but it's just very low volume. so it's actually still running in the background (when i plug in headphones i can stil hear it, even when the slider is totally to the left). and nightfall has the annoying feature that the music changes dramatically when you enter a fight. the big coincidence: each time i enter a fight i lag to hell (my comp and conn are super-b, no problems there). does it have to do with the fight itself or with the damn music in the background that is adapting to the fight?!
i wish there was an off/on button for music; not just the volume itself, but a total shut-down of the music.
oh and btw: i don't like the idea of voice chat either, vent/ts do their job well enough
