Sir Skullcrasher
Trying to cap Vengeful Was Khanhei, first time my group died of bad pulling on my part. Second time, made it all the way to the boss and realized that I was still a W/Mo not a W/Rit.

I was making a Tyrian survivor character... And I spent a few weeks getting her to like level 15. Then one night I randomly woke up at 4AM, so I came online and walked outside and started attacking a wurm.
Then I decided I should check teh Wiki for the exp needed for the second level of Survivor. Came back ingame, and I was being attacked by a wolf didn't think twice, just walked up to the collector and started browsing his stuff. The wolf was still attacking me.. then I died, and I was like "Eh whatev... WTF! AW HELL NAW!"
So level 15 Survivor... killed by a level 2 wolf.
IT GETS WORSE!
So I recreate her, and level her to level 9 and decided to leave pre-sear. I go through the PVP part.. staying alive but we had a level 3 warrior. The idiot died atleast 7 times so they won. I THOUGHT that the slaying of all chars on the losing team would count as a death so I quit really fast.
When I went to log back in, the game would load, then boot me. Took me 4 weeks over something that wouldnt have counted as a death. And Arena.net never really fixed it. I found the workaround (Download all files).

Till now I have not made huge mistakes (reading all kinds of things others did).
I gave away black dye once or twice.
But that's a bad habbit, when I am having a good time, I give stuff away.
Even if it's somewhat valuable.
Sold a really good gold axe for 5K (worth probably around 30-40K because of the mods).
I might have done stupid things when I just started playing the game, but can't remember.
I know I have bought some items at a very high price, but the loss would be around 5-10K at the most.
Runes...
Having a few spare Sup Death's and trading them when they started rising somewhat. Think I sold them at 2K, they were about 6-8K a few days later.
The same with the 'blood stained' insignia (or whatever it's called).
I found one and knew I would not give my necro NF armor.
So traded for 1K (last time I looked they were around 10K).
Having a few spare Sup Monk runes and failing to sell the moment they nerfed the 55.
One thing I do regret somewhat is not creating a pure PvP slot earlier.
That would have saved me a lot of gold since I have many skills unlocked, but not on the same character.
So every time my guild wanted to play a different build or me a different profession, I would go to trainer and buy the skills (at 1K each).
Valuable savers:
Remember where your stuff is (also heroes) and check everything when you delete a character.
Check what you salvage/customise/merch. Double check.
Lock your inventory. And put a 0-value item in front of everything you want to keep.
Know the value of items and check websites when you find one you have never seen before.
Create a PvP character if you plan to play PvP frequently and unlock skills instead of buying them at trainer.

Yeah.... I sure know mine.
After Nightfall was released for some reason I was under the impression that any time you salvaged your armor you'd get the rune out of it and the armor would stay intact. I had no idea that it was based on a %. Needless to say I lost my monks FoW leggings over a minor protection rune. I was so upset I couldn't even utter a word. I just stared at the screen thinking, "that didn't just happen......".

Feminist Terrorist
Worst self ownage ever-I ran into the Sulfurous Waste and stopped, wondering what that box was that just popped up, then died. Took me a moment to realize what an amazingly stoopid thing I did, not ten minutes ago.
Spartan117
I think mine was when i first went in UW. i went over to the lost soul and got surrounded by those big warrior guys.(was my first time, how was i supposed to know? lol) Man, i might as well have been sat on and spanked! Thing hit me for 405 hit points. Didnt go down there again for a while. ROFL!!!
The Bloodrose
Fissure of Woe run. Everyone had died and I was getting ready to run to rebirth later. Decided to fire off one last Barrage for the road. Hit the button and just noticed I had empathy and SS on myself. Hit 6 mobs....shortly thereafter I became a dirt dart.

Well, it's not really a self-ownage because I managed to avoid it but...
When I was getting Legendary Survivor on my warrior, I was at 1200k exp, having completed factions almost completely (every quests, every mission except the last 3 (waters, raisu, shiro) and having capped about 90 elites all in factions... I was vermin farming for the last part of my exp because I didnt want to cap the elementalist elites (too risky)... anyways, it's really easy but there's a group of vermin that comes from another direction than the farming route if you want long enough... well, I was oblivious to this so I finished my route, stayed in the zone thinking nothing could happen and went to the toilet and to get a glass of water... when I came back I was at 100 hp with bleeding and 3 vermins attacking me... so yeah I exited real quick =p
Good thing I had 625HP cause most warriors would of died right there =p

this is a toss up between when i spent 50k and all day buying sup charr carvings and got my ninja mask, dyed it black, and when i went to take the runes off my old mask, i mis-clicked and salvaged it into 32 cloth : /, or when i got scammed out of 72k on a perfect fell (80k, cancel, 80k, cancel, 8k, accept )

I went from killing Zaishen for an easy 2k faction (couple of skill unlocks, at least) to RAs. Unfortunately, I don't carry a res sig when knocking the Zaishen around, and I forgot to equip one before I entered an RA match. Boy did I get an earful from my teammates. >.< Self-owned.
nugzta
Nah you could exchange those shards for wintersday presents last year, so in the end he didnt get owned, just almost.
Steboy93
Trading perfect fellblade for destroyer inspriation staff thinking i would be able to sell it for 100k+ectos. Turns out nobody like inspiration...it took 2 days of constant spamming to sell for 60k....
I quit buyin coffers after opening 5 and getting nothing but elixers and scrolls...

Accidentally deleting the wrong char a few months ago
who had a fair amount of money and items .
I still hope for the day they add an extra "Do you REALLY REALLY want to delete this char"
after typing in the name not just hit delete.

Triple shot+savage, asuran scan+I am the strongest+glass arrows.
All versus a HM boss foe with around 20 smiting prayers, holy wrath and retribution.
I was at ~75% heal, a little bit of DP. I spiked, and killed, myself.
Yay!

That was...back in the day....a good 700k down the drain? Instantly?

Merching a 14% unconditional flatbow back when I was a noob. Look at the prices on unconditional these days -_-. Thought "14% always, no mods, wtf" *sell to merch*.

Bought GWEN before NF.
Hell, bought GWEN.
Seriously though:
First character. Wammo to the max...used to farm riverside and stingray strand for runes...got quite a few. Also got quite a bit of Steel and other rare crafting materials that I kept in the char's inventory...was long before crafting storage came out. Had about 80k plus stacks of materials, 15k armor, max FDS and +30hp Magma's Shield(big dolla items then)...deleted the char because I thought I'd get all that stuff back. First character deleted.

Repeated Imperial Sanctum runs, cursing that Shiro was too hard, only to find out I forgot to change my Attributes. It still took 3 tries afterwards.

Hmm...well I'm a war so I could probably exceed the post length limit several times over with really bad moves...
Lets just start off with buying the presale, making 2 wars and lvling both to 20......
My first war used a bow and my second carried a monk offhand till he reached Iron Mines...
I've bought so many unident golds its really sad, especially since it was long long before any of the titles came out....gee no good mods on any of these....
And I loved to go out solo with a skill bar full of party or 'other ally' skills...

Didn't know they updated the fow metalic armor for monks and went buying a spare armor (play with one char. only) Tried to dye it as my main armor but the dye setup was totaly changed. Salvaged spare parts. Got 28 ectos (chest piece) and 28 shards (legs) back. Loss: 77 ectos and 77 shards. Ectos were 6,5k at that time, shards around 4k. Total loss around 800k.

My worst was when i saved up 15 sets of gemstones and 40k to buy my tormented shield. then to have it scammed 3 days later. by a war/A using return, gettin me to convince to drop it to see it.. (longstory). dropped then he returned and took it and logged...
Dorvan919
My worst is...after buying full vabbian i didnt like it so i sold it to a merchant :P
