High End Armor and the Jealousy Factor
Torikae
Perhaps it's different between servers, but I've never had any abuse over any of my 15k sets, nor heard anyone giving anyone grief for wearing high end armour.
I bought a Vabbian mix for my Sin a few days ago (my poor Xunlai vault!) and I've had nothing but compliments.

Fixed.
I'm sorry but your post is total nonsense. You don't need to sit in front of your pc for twelve hours to get stuff. There are farming builds on this forum which can get you money and allow you to have a life at the same time! Really! I'm not kidding! Hell you don't even need to pve to get rich. Just get a good group and go do some pvp in heroes ascent for an hour or two. Get to halls and beat the other teams for rare inscribable weapons worth tons more than what you could make in a week or even a month of grinding.
If you don't work for anything, don't expect to gain anything. You don't know until you've tried. This is coming from someone who has done it all and gotten it all while having a fulltime job (nowhere near a computer) with a very active social life
To the OP if you like the armor, go for it! Who cares about what people say.

Grotto is the equivalent of Pre-Searing Ascalon City.
My ranger has 15k druid's, other than that all my chars have 1.5k armor (except my mule who is naked, though I may get him some cheapo Ascalon armor just so I don't need to stare at his nudity on the character selection screen).
People who eBay gold are missing out on a lot. It's like cheating. You know, you may use a trainer or cheat code in a game once. But then you can't resist and you want to try all these other cheats until you rely solely on it.
Just ignore those snooty all-FoW character players if they cause you trouble. Maybe someday you'll be able to get 15k armor. The game tends to reward fubar drops to those who are humble or desperately need the money (and I mean desperately not as in desperate to get that last piece of 15k armor, I mean desperate as in you can't even afford salvage/ID kits for farming and such). I was doing a B/P in the new UW, thinking "Blah, will just get a green worth a few plat, what's the big deal", when I get an ecto AND a black dye in the same run, plus a few plat worth of items.

Well, if you had paid a bit of attention to the news, you would have known that ebay has banned all sales of virtual money. Virtual property, such as those in Second Life are still sold.

Besides eBay, there are several non-ebay businesses operating on sites that sell MMORPG gold for real-life money via PayPal.
In fact, I think there's one company that sells like WoW, GW, RuneScape, MapleStory, and several other MMORPGs' currency all on one site. It's scary.

Mostly I just have him to farm with. And I don't have obsidian armor for any of my characters, though I suppose I could get it.

I've bought 9 or 10 15k sets in the time I've played GW, two of which were on now-dead chars, and I've never been called an ebayer by anyone. Now, if I had consolidated some of that cash and bought some FoW armor, I might have stories to tell, but I think most players understand that 15k armor really isn't too hard to get anymore.
Lord-UWR
Yes, that is scary, however, it is a relief that ebay, a major source of this form of trade, is no longer supporting it.

Where are people meeting all these jerks who give greif over the pricy armor?
I've had my Mesmer's FoW armor for about a year now, and have been playing the crap out of her. I've gotten tons of complimments on it, several "congrats" and only one or two people asking if I e-bayed it. I respond with a "Hell, No!" and that's the end of it.

If you like an armour, get it. If you don't like an armour, save your money. I have two end game warriors for my warrior: Canthan and Elonian. I got it because I like how they look. I'm not really gonna care what others think about it.
It's true that others do bash around people in FoW armour. 90% of the time it's because the people in them attract that attention by acting immature. Although I HAVE seen one instance where a guy was standing there in silence, going through his storage. Two idiots walked up to him and started insulting him over his armour, completely unprovoked.
As for the whole "wammo" stereotype, I use a warrior/monk myself. I ALWAYS use monk secondary in PVE. I get a bit sick of running into terrible teams and having only me survive, so I have to rebirth them all. Or even better. Having only me and one monk left and finding out that the monk has no real resurrect. So I take it upon myself to make sure that I ALWAYS have a reusable resurrect, like Rebirth. Does that make me less intelligent? Well, if you think dragging my team from the gutters is stupid...

Another random tool: "ZOMG you eBayer you suck get a life."
The moral of this passage; No matter what you do, or have, tools will allways be there to shoot their virtual mouths off and have something negative to say. Be your own person and wear whatever armor you like the look of. If you like FoW then wear the hell out of it.

I have never had anyone do something like that to me. I've had people compliment my armor, but not accuse me of eBaying or anything. Though honestly, what does it matter? If someone really is jealous of your armor, no matter what they accuse you of, as long as you think it looks good and you feel good about how you got it, take it as a compliment.

There is someone who's jealous of armors? I didn't know there was, for all I've seen so far are people jealous with titles, especially Champion and Gladiator titles.

I've never had anyone say anything about mine (vabbian chest, arms, feet and primeval leggings on a female Dervish - I do not display the hood, no idea what I even purchased for it except for max armor). Heck, it is even all dyed black. The only time I have "brought attention" too it was if someone is talking about female Dervish Vabbian and wants to see what a few of the pieces look like. I chose the set because it think it looks good, not because of price (my necro has nothing above 1.5k sets but I also think it is the best looking).
You need VERY little farming for it. Pick up everything, ID it (whites too - they increase in merchant value, sometimes by a significant amount). Do not spend money on things you do not need - for example your heroes do very nicely off of drops, by Vabbi the ones you use the most ought to have all max damage purples or better, by Real of Torment all Gold or Greens (I trade all quest rewards for keys except for trade agreements). Salvage items for your crafting materials - also check the materials crafter and see if you can get the stuff cheap (when I purchased mine it was MUCH cheaper to salvage drops and craft elonian leather). And, lastly, trade contracts for rubies.
I had enough for the whole set when I was through with Nightfall and about 1/3 of the way through Factions, though again I chose to wear Primeval leggings.
Pretty much the only time I have seen someone hassled about their 15k armor was warrior that had a full set of 15k Canthan armor dyed what looked like fluorescent lime green. IIRC people were calling him "lettuce head". In their defense it *was* the most horrid piece of armor I have aver seen and it *did* actually look like he had a head of lettuce for a helmet. I hoped that it looked better outside of town when its detail wasn't lowered, otherwise it was the single most ugly thing I have seen in GW. I made the comment that at least any monks that use a mouse to target him could find him easy (this was a few days into Nightfalls release - it was even easy to pick him out of the sea of people in the Consulate Docks) - strangely he seemed to take that as a compliment and thanked me. But that was more for the way it looked than the cost.

I didn't farm. I didn't eBay. (How do you buy armour on eBay anyway? I thought weaponsmiths had to craft the stuff for you and it was customised.) All I did was play normally, sell quite normal drops to the merchant, collect quest rewards, and put every plat into storage. It adds up surprisingly quickly.
And by normal drops, I mean normal. I'm not the kind of person who attracts black dye or other stuff, and I've only just started FoW now that I've managed to interest a fellow guild member in going out with me and heroes.
I recall making around 20 plats from Yak's Bend to Lion's Arch.
Right now I'm saving for Kurzick 15k for my necro. I have more than enough cash and the leggings. I just need more amber. I've done all the quests so I guess I'll have to try AB to get the faction. (What? BUY amber? )
So you don't need to sit in front of your computer for 12 hours to get stuff. Well, not all in one day. Unless of course, you want it all and you want it now. In which case see the other posts about immaturity.
Winstar
I've never been accused of E-Baying and in all honesty, getting the money for high end ranger armor doesn't take that much time and effort anymore. You don't need high end stuff to farm effectively, and you just need roll up a toon that can do some profitable easy farms on occasion. You don't need to spend hours a day doing this either. You also, if you are frugal, can save a fair bit of money up just beating the game. So, playing the game together with a little effort over time should net you some high end armour without much time invested. As a result it really has nothing to do with status anymore but its mostly about personal preference. Now, the real challenge is picking the right look for your toon and pimping out your high end armour with the right dyes so you actually look good.
Laenavesse
same here, no accusations but instead people are like "what armor is that? o_o" and for my sin it's the 15k luxon (vabbian and ancient pffft ooooogly.) dyed black. so i haven't gotten any bad remarks. I even do my CE dance and though that could be seen as showing off, I just like the CE dance cos it's cooler and again, no degrading remarks or anything.
i recently got my monk vabbian but i don't think anyone even notices xD I've never really seen it much around myself.

1) I've never heard or had abuse yelled at me in a town or outpost while wearing any 15k armor, and I have several sets.
2) Even if you do hear it or recieve it, its either because the other person is trying to rattle your cage, because they think their armor looks better, or they are just being a moron because they find it hard to make gold.
Conclusion!
Ignore them. There will always be someone who dislikes your armor and thinks theirs is better. It just shows the maturity and age of some players.
Plus if someone is being ripped in a town or city about their armor, there is a good chance that player made some smug remark about his 15k armor and people layed into him for doing it. You should find out both sides of an argument first. People dont usually start on someone for no reason ingame.

I have 12 characters in 15k armour and have of em have 2 sets of 15k. One of my necro's has vabbi armour.
I also have deleted 2 chars which had 15k armour.
And I never bought money from ebay or whatever. I earned it all. Not to be a show off but cause I like it. I am not big on farming so I only do that from time to time...
But 12 characters that go through Elona and that all did the treasure chests and stuff got me 2 or 3 sets of armour easy so that was a boost.
Still, most of my cash I just got by picking up stuff and selling it. I never get any abuse for having it.
What I do see, is a lot of kids that just started playing the game and are upset that they can't get it right away (including being level 20 and have all elite skills)...but that's not something I take very seriously for obvious reasons.
A lot of it is about setting goals and and managing your gold. I am usually close to broke but I can save cash for my goals fairly quickly and then spend it when I get there.
Vabbi took more work and lucky for me I don't like any FoW armours enough to get em...

I've been playing for ~22 months, and in that time I've purchased two sets of 15k (Tyrian) armor and one set of FoW. The vast majority of the money used came from Griffin/Mino/Troll farming (ah, the good ol' days) and a contributing factor was the extensive use of Collector's armor and weapons. My 1k and 1.5k armor protects me just fine, but would I mind having 15k/FoW armor sets for my characters? No. But only if they look better than what they're wearing now...

I am currently trying to save up for Vabbian armor. When I say "Save up" I mean questing with any of my characters who have got that far in a bid to earn enough Trade Contracts to pay for it. Clearly, with this sort of armor, it really does force you to farm! You do not get the sort of money you need for Obsidian or Vabbian as you move through the game naturally...not even close.
It has taken 7 or 8 characters so far to earn me 88 Trade Contracts, which just goes to prove that earning enough materials/money/collectors items for some of the high-end armor cannot be done without grinding hard / farming. I need about another 80 trade contracts to have enough for the armor...I'm hoping it will give me a huge sense of self-satisfaction by doing it the "proper" way. And no, I've not bought any of the contracts
Personally I've never had people give me grief because I have 15k armor...although by High-End I assume the OP is only referring to Obsidian/Vabbian...neither of which I currently own. But as far as my collection of normal prestige armor is concerned I've only ever been complemented on it.
I've often seen a few people showing off...just people in towns continually changing their armor and shouting about it in Local Chat...kinda sad but I just ignore it...and I guess if they end up getting unwelcome messages they only have themselves to blame. That sort of flaming though, if probably due to people getting annoyed rather than jealousy imo...but as I say, I tend to ignore things like that 10% of the time...90% of the time Local Chat is turned off anyway.

Eh, you shouldn't worry about what other people think.
I, for example, think warrior vabbian armor is one of the fugliest in the game, and anybody wearing it looks ridiculous.
But you shouldn't pay attention to me, just do what you like.

People are idiots. You're gonna find them everywhere no matter what armor you're wearing.
For example, I really like my monk' armor. I spent a lot of time picking it out and dying it. She's wearing a mixture of different Kaineng Center max armors. I've dyed the top and arms light blue and the pants are dyed black. I'm proud of the way she looks. Her armor almost looks like regular clothes that I could actually wear to the office. (Nice sweater and black slacks). I don't have a screenshot with me or I'd post it.
This armor wasn't very expensive. I just bought the standard 1.5k set and I dyed the pants black, my biggest expense. (Well, not really since I used dye that I had picked up in drops).
Anyways, I was doing some quests in the Yaks Bend area with a pug when one of the guys on the team asked if I had dyed my pants Black. I replied that yes I had. WRONG ANSWER!!! He immediately laid into me. He called me a moron, an idiot, stupid noob, etc etc etc! He said only F****ing morons waste black dye like that and OBVIOUSLY I was a stupid retard!! He then proceeded to "lecture" me on the properties of armor and that I needed to get rid of my "Starter" armor. Didn't a retard like me even know that I could buy better armor in town rather than relying on the starter armor.
I'm not sure what gave him the idea that my max armor was "starter" armor. I wasn't level 20 (I think I was around Level 12-13 at the time), but I was playing very well and not dying. My armor was obviously holding up well against the dwarves and ice golems.
I guess I wasn't the retard after all.

As long as you get through legit means, wear what you want to see on your character.

I don't think the medium-expensive stuff like vabbi armor really gets that much insults. My dervish's vabbi armor has never brought insults, and neither has my bone dragon. Instead I've had a number of compliments. Although, I usually have a title suggesting some experience with the game (protector, cartographer, etc) so that may help.
I think it's FoW armor and ectos that are mostly closely associated with the concept of "ebaying" in people's minds. Probably because they can't possibly imagine how people could make that much money. However, sooooo many people have FoW armor now that I'd be suprized if that brought a lot of insults too, unless that person was acting noobish.
If you've been playing this game for a long time, there's a good chance you've made enough money for FoW armor (except if you spent it all on swords or something). There's no need for any intense farming or power trading, and many people have been playing for a while. Personally, I think there's far fewer "ebayers" out there than your average jealous insulter thinks there is.

I mean there has to be some people that got their armor in game by farming etc, and didn't just "Grab mommies credit card" and run to ebay to buy the resources.. Right? |

Get your high end armor including fow in just a couple days from the above link.
People just rip on fow armor because it's haggard looking and "buying gold online" is the best diss they can come up with I suppose. I like a quote I've seen on this site somewhere that says " dont argue with idiots. they just bring you down to their level and beat you with exp".....haha that one always makes me laugh.
