This thread primary has to do with some recent tactics by company's in online games. I was thinking about it and since from what we've heard about Guild Wars 2 in a much more open world its obvious these would cause more money . Of course i'm not sure of how they will handle it or if they will have a chapter system similar to Guild wars. Either way I was thinking what would you guys think if like at the login screen they would have small advertisements to help pay for server maintenance etc.In my opinion I wouldn't really mind this seeing small advertisements for mabye computer related products like mouses and keyboards. Im highly against seeing it actually in game. For instance going to accept a quest and seeing By the way... NEW LOGITECH G16KEYBOARD ONLY 99.99 AT YOUR LOCAL BESTBUY. I know if this thread were submitted by Galie responses would be totally different so i'm just curious to see what you guys think.

I think something on the log in screen would not be so terrible . As long as the monies generated went back into content updates , in game giveaways , and server maintenance , (also keeping away monthly fees if that happens to be creeping into anyones head over at Anet ).

Just faced the invading charr horde? Soiled your pants in the process?

Doesn't have to be. The infrastructure of GW server application is optimized to reduce bandwidth cost and server load. Anet will only do better with GW2, and not worse.

Anyways...majority of gamers doesn't like the idea of in-game advertisements. It's been discussed over at gamedev.net and polled at mmorpg.com. IT JUST WON'T WORK!

It will probably be a Fed ex quest invloving you having to talk to Ronald the clown to go down to a tavern to buy a Coka Potion of refreshness and a crumbled fish fillet and a large sack of tasty golden fried potatoes and return to him for 2000 points towards your unhealthy title and a free collectable mini Clown pet....

Dont you just love ads in games.

Want to disable these ads?

You should have bought the Collector's Edition.

Or click here now to upgrade to a Gold account.

To be honest i wuldnt mind at startup screen either. If it keeps the game healthy, its ok.

Nope. I dont want a game being flooded with adverts, whether its be on the login screen or ingame.

The login screen is meant to be nice to look at.

Can you imagine what the current login screen would look like with "Coca Cola", "Adidas" and "Microsoft" plastered accross the top. It would kill the romantic, gorgeous scene of a boat on an ocean.

It would just be uggly.

But we dont need a huge influx of money from advertising to maintain the servers. Anet are doing a very good job of maintaining their systems and keeping down lack and preventing disconnects.

I start playing WoW about 2 months ago, and while its a good game, I tend to get disconnected every 30 minutes and the lag is awfull.

I never experienced anything as bad as that in GuildWars. I think that shows that pay monthly fees dont mean you will always get a better connection.

I sit there for hours on end, admiring the view

But seriously. Do people want to replace a gorgeously animated ocean scene with dozens of square boxes with annoying flash animations in, or company logos?

Anet puts so much effort into the interface to give us displays like that. It seems a waste to ruin them with...

"Its nearly Christmas, buy your kid a Transformer this year or he'l hate you!"

I'd much rather something nice looking, then having banners floating around my characters head as I select him.

I personally think this shows a complete disregard for the effort Anet puts into how gorgeous the game looks, if people want to just dismiss it and replace it with adds.

For me, advertising would ruin the game. A definite no go. I suppose that I can see it in contemporary games where it would not stick out like a sore thumb like it would in a fantasy setting. As this is a fantasy game it would certainly not work.

He's talking about the login screen only. I for one would not mind it being on the login screen only (not even the character select screen, just where you put your password) if Anet needed it. Better a small ad then less free content or laggy servers.

I lol'd here..

I remember once I was playing City of Villains and we had some serious PvP going in Recluse's Victory. Out of nowhere a GM comes in and announces this ad for teamspeak on the open channel. It was very very strange....

Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem with it being on the log in screen. Mostly because I auto log in anyway, but if I didn't, I don't think I'd mind anyway.

I wouldn't mind adverts if they were only on the login screen(as long as they didn't effect the speed of startup.). If it meant keeping GW subscription-free or helped with Anet's budget then I wouldn't mind. Even if it was just so Anet could make an extra buck I wouldn't mind really. This game's purpose is to make a profit after all.

I don't think it will happen because companies seem to insist their will onto companies that advertise for them.

Red Bull: Sorry we must remove our sponsorship because of the Rock Star off hands give the same energy boost as Red Bull off hands give.

ANET: But all of out off hands give the same energy.

Red Bull: Yes but Red Bull gives you wings so we want flight added to our off hands.

ANET: But you can't currently fly in GW.

Red Bull: Ok we will have to pull our add then

I think that in-game ads (or even ads on the log-in screen) would be tacky and totally out of place.

I started watching "Predator III" on TV one night (bored, nothing else on, and hadn't seen it before), and the first thing you see in the movie is a space ship travelling through the void. It was plastered with Ads! I thought to myself "this is going to be worse than I thought it would be." And it was.

All you people that say you don't mind must be the same folks that are the reason I have to sit through eleven commercials before I watch a movie I paid ten bucks to see.

Just say NO to advertising in things you're PAYING for!

Yesterday I would've said this thread would never have anything to do with GW, but after the GW2 news bombshell, I'll believe anything is possible.

The fact is I dont care about advertising as long as it drives down Guildwars Prices OR gets Anet more employees to get us more content as long as we can see a result of the advertising. And also I dont want it to be out of place... The ads better blend in with the game and not just popup in the middle of a run.

The online sphere of advertising is different from the other forms out there (print, TV, etc). Most online media buys for blue chip companies are about branding. The agencies that rep them tend to understand the business and would not make outrageous demands like the above (which was clearly tongue-in-cheek, I'm aware). Their goal is to get a consumer to think of their particular product, or brand, when they need something in that category be it energy drinks, candy, fast food, shoes, and so forth.

Of course this is all tangential to the fact that any attempt at actual in-game advertising of modern brands in a fantasy game is a horrible, horrible idea. Verisimilitude is important.

Me and my pal are wondering on how they are going to mantain the money coming in order to make a real protif out of GW2 and to mantain it.

It seems they had a really tough time to mantain GW1, it seems ilogical to reduce the amount of times the money will come and promisse to create expansion packs, updates and etc. Since they had a 6-10 months gap between the incomes in GW1, and still couldnt give us what they are offering right now.

Maybe there will be tons and tons of things to buy in-game (sound pack, skill packs, character creation, character slot).

The advertising doesn't have to be as invasive as you some people have posted. It could be like the rice cakes and dwarven ale. Who wouldn't like a scoop of Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream, a Hershey Bar, or even Red Bull for their character?

Those items would be out of place in the current Guild Wars but GW2 they may not be.

This is a very awful idea.

Problems with it

- a decreased experience just like watching a movie for free is worse then watching a movie on hbo.

-advertisers influencing game designers...we will advertise if...or perhaps random mysterious lags so that you constantly have to see the log-in screen

-if you give an inch they'll take a mile...once advertisers get the log-in screen they'll start demanding advertising in missions like you've completed the ring of fire congratulations you won a coupon for cereal or amor sponsorship... you can pay 15k for armor or 1k it is has an add on it

just say no to unwanted advertising.

I have to ask, this is a bad thing? I mean, if I got a box of cereal for completing a mission, I'd consider it a lovely bonus! XP, Skill Points, and lookie, Corn Pops, too!

horrible idea, i'd really hate to see that.
i hope Anet can make good enough money not to ever need to do such stuff.
maybe in the worst case a small ad at login screen/character selection screen would be acceptable, but not any further, please

edit: a small change of mind - if those ads would pay for our extra *storage space* bring them on! lol
