PvE and PvP population stats? demographics?
countesscorpula
I've seen a lot of people say that PvE makes up the majority of the player population in Guild Wars. I've also seen a lot of people say that PvE is a minority.
I get the feeling that because these statements are in direct conflict with each other, there is not actual data on the subject. Which leads me to believe that a person might be inclined to feel that their style of play is the majority, because most of the people they meet during the game happen to be doing what they are doing. This point of view would be somewhat myopic, just as thinking that because I wash windows, and all the guys I work with wash windows, that most of the people in the world wash windows.
And so I ask:
Is there any definitive information on what portion of the player base would call itself PvP, and what portion would call itself PvE? For any who might be confused by the terms:
Player vs Player would include things like Hall of Heroes, Guild vs Guild, Aspenwood, Random Arenas, Team Arenas etc.
Player vs Environment includes things like Quests, Missions, Farming (green hunting, mob slaying, solo or in groups), treasure hunting, skill capping, map exploring etc.
I'd start a bonified poll, but I don't seem to be able to do that. I'd suggest though:
*PvP and only PvP. oh, and more PvP.
*Mostly PvP and rarely PvE (to get pretty things for my PvP char).
*PvP and PvE: The best of both worlds. I love them both sooooo much I just can't choose.
*Mostly PvE and rarely PvP - just for a change of pace.
*PvE and only PvE. Are they gonna release more quests soon?
I recognize that this has the potential to turn into a "you suxorz, PvX is the best, and PvY is for losers," but if we could all make an effort to focus on what we like, and not what and who we don't like, I think we could keep this a positive thread.
Editted to include Talon's suggestion. In theory, nothing gained in PvE can give an advantage in PvP that couldn't already be acquired with spending Balth Faction (or so I'm told).

You need a category:
PvP, and PvE to make my characters better for PvP/Get pretty stuff/Get an advantage
PvP, and PvE to make my characters better for PvP/Get pretty stuff/Get an advantage
Winstar
I'll say PvP and PvE although I'm like somewhere in between this and PvP and Rarely PvE.
My own guess is that the majority is going to fall into the Mostly PvE sometimes PvP bracket.
"PvP, and PvE to make my characters better for PvP/Get pretty stuff/Get an advantage"
I'd say the above ^ falls into PvP and PvE. It takes a significant amount of time to PvE up a lot of the pretty loot. Are the reasons you PvE immaterial?

FYI, this thread will NOT give an indication of which is more popular... just which is more popular on this fansite. As such, I think this thread is a bad idea... anyway, I'll give ya my answer anyway:
*PvP and PvE: The best of both worlds. I love them both sooooo much I just can't choose.

It seems harmless so long as we remain clear on the limits of this survey. But that doesn't seem to be present in the first post. We aren't going to get any representative information here about the actual population of GW.
Critical Cal
PVE and occassionally PVP
And as for Accuracy? One Must Start Somewhere, right?....Perhaps other Fansites will take notice & post same kinda polls?

PvE. I have 56 fame and I'm ashamed I have that much. It's a little too high for me.

Yeah this poll will never work on fansites, posting it here or gwonline will get 90% PvE results while if you posted it on theguildhall you'd get 90% PvP. It's just the bias of the community and the way they congregate

I do both. I haven't done a single PvE mission in 3 weeks...

Well it's a shame that anyone would exclude one aspect of the game. I'm still surprised that there arent more hybrid players (PVE and PVP roughly equally)

Long ago in a galaxy far far far away. Oh Snap wrong story. anywho
As im sure this will suprise a few people on here. Now im about 95% PvE and rarely PvP, which i only do when i have enough alcohol or am in a mood to just Piss off PvPer's anymore. When i started though it was a whole new ballgame and was about 50-50 on PvE and PvP due to the fact being a guild leader of 5 different guilds and affiliated with 6 more. What can i say it was busy times. anyways i ran GvG tests for my other old guilds and Pre alliaince.

75% PvP
25% PvE
That puts me right between "PvP only" and "PvP and rarely PvE" camps.
On topic, I think that the majority of the playerbase is PvE based. This does not however, grant PvE'ers more right to demand changes. The main focus of the game has always been competitive play, ie. PvP. But from what I've read, GW2 is moving towards the PvE crowd of general MMO, sadly.
But for definitive proof, I think only Anet have it, andn probably won't be releasing it. Because if they did, it would be used in the ongoing "PvP vs. PvE" war, which they are trying to avoid or at least lower the damage it causes.

Probably 70% PvP / 30% PvE by time spent, but I'd put myself into "PvP only" category by attitude because I don't find PvE very interesting and get bored of it fairly fast. It's there just to kill time.
And I'll hazard a wild guess and say that the total for all players, by time spent would be something like 75-85% PvE / 25-15% PvP.

The advantages are so minimal now though. Lets see... using a pve character allows you to get a more specific pet (dire/agressive/playful) that I guess could be useful in some beast master build (who the heck uses beast master in pvp anyways...). Oh, and I think PvP sins can only use piercing daggers? (correct me if I'm wrong), where as a PvE sin can swap between slashing and piercing daggers if needed (say... if enemy had shields up, swap to the slashing daggers). You can take slashing daggers out of storage and put em on pvp sin but then its not customized, so less damage. Other than that though, its only reason you'd use a pve char in pvp nowadays is for looks.
Anyways.... I pick:
*Mostly PvP and rarely PvE (to get pretty things for my PvP char).

PVP/ PvE for shiny things on pvp charas.
Were pve more challenging, and had a somewhat overall higher caliber of players, i would have no problem with pve. however, this is not the case. The missions are repetitive, the majority of the players dont understand actual build concepts, and the general populations coordination is that of a quadriplegic 5 year old with downs. So, in short, if PvE was PvP, I'd play more.

I'd probebly say 60% PvP, 40% PvE now. I just play a bit of either when I'm bored of the other. Stale meta, and a character finished all 3 games, leaves me sitting around chatting most of the time.
As for the general population...I'd guess 80% Pve atm. PvE has higher replay value, and overall, is much funner for beginners, and anyone else.

Mostly PvE and rarely PvP - just to try but not a fan of PvP
This is just my experience, but the few times I've played PvP I found the experience completely ruined by immaturity and idiocy. It's really saying something to say that I have a better experience with PUGs then with PvP.

More PvE than PvP... not enough contacts to get into serious PvP. I read more PvP than PvE on the forums if that counts for anything?

Though lately it's been 100% life 0% GW.

*PvE and only PvE.
Only PvP I've ever done any considerable amount of is AB/Ft. Aspenwood just to get faction needed for PvE quests and amber for armor(when it was 2k+). I did kinda enjoy it, but just seemed to lose interest after a few rounds. I have max faction for both sides now, and havent stepped into a PvP arena since the Nightfall preview weekend.
All of the "pretty things" I want, I can get in PVE. That leaves me with no motivation to PvP other than just for the fun of it, and I guess thats just not enough. For me even PvE is more fun when I'm actually working towards something, like spending most of last weekend doing quests that reward trade contracts so I wouldn't have to spend as much gold on a set of Vabbian armor.

I kinda go through phases. Usually whena new chapter is out I go more pve with some pvp. But after I've gone through all the content once or twice it's about 90-95% pvp.
countesscorpula
My turn.
I'm PvE mostly, if not completely. I'll occassionally take a trip to aspenwood. But the rest of it holds no interest for me. I won't get into the reasons, cause that'll just devolve things. I don't want that. Suffice to say I have my reasons and they are good enough for me.

This forum has more pvpers than gwonline, for example, so the numbers will be far from the truth.
I mostly pvp and rarely PvE. I usually take 1 character through a campaign. Currently working on getting some characters ready for hard mode though.

Guild Wars Activity
about 50% PvP, 25% PvE, 25% Slacking(then log off)
I only PvP (HA and GvG) with my guild mates and the only time when I play with other people is when I do RA, AB, PvE or the guild team is in need of pickup or guests. I don't LFG or find and join other groups.
PvE, I need lots of those. I don't have 1 million gold in my storage and I haven't done any of those Defend Kryta or whatever and Last Days of Dawn. Heck, I didn't even see the robot in Furnace dead. And that's only for GW:Prophecies.

PvE only, but maybe going to try some basic PvP when I get a faster PC.

*PvP and PvE: The best of both worlds. I love them both sooooo much I just can't choose.
I wouldn't say I can't choose. I enjoy both sides (PvP more so atm). I hate HA with a passion (I love to play there, and I try to keep up with the meta, but the people are... well that is a discussion for another time). I do enjoy GvG, but my guild rarely does it (and if we do, it is for fun; not rating). I love PvE, I love getting new titles and I enjoy farming or playing alone with H&H.
I used to PvP a lot more, back when I could do Tombs for fun without playing a gimmick. I enjoy PvE more now because I find the people to be a lot more fun to be around.

I believe this fansite is a bit more PvE-inclined while a fansite like the Guild Hall is more PvP.
Jongo River
99% PvE and 1% obtaining Faction through PvP.
Generally, I can't stand PvP. I've probably played too many online shooters to have the patience for it.

Lord Mendes
80% PvP, 20% PvE
I played loads of PvE when I started, but it got boring. Also, I don't like spending much money, so I've been sitting on a near max-storage for about a year. Not bragging, just saying that if I ever need anything shiny for my chars I will just buy it. No need to farm.
As for the overall demographic, its more like 90% PvE and 10% PvP. There are some great threads about this in the glads arena section and TGH.
Not saying that one is better than the other, just that GW was marketed as a "cheap MMO for the casual gamer", and that tends to attract many more casual PvEers than hardcore competitive PvP gamers.

the 3rd option, I like both of them. I like 2 at the time
Myrkwid
90% PvE and 10% PvP. I like both, but PvP is, in my opinion, to slow, repetitive and boring to keep me interested for longer periods. Fun for an evening, but that's enough for a week.
Since Nightfallrelease I almost haven't touched PvP again. It's not that I don't want to, but, the metagame and the currently involved skills in it just want to make me puke, totally not my playingstlye and in my opinion utter crap, so currently I'm even 99%/1% on this matter. Latest "balance"update made one or two babysteps in the right direction, but still, much more is needed to bring me back.

I absolutely hate PvP, it's not my thing at all. I don't even like the few points in PvE where you're forced to play PvP or to play with people not on your team. I'm not into the social or competitive aspect at all unless it's with people I already know. I've gotten a bunch of my friends involved in GW, and so I play with them.
The main reason I play GW over WoW is due to instanced play, and I'm sorry to hear that there's going to be less of that in GW2. I'm not sure if it will be possible or not, but I have to say that the first time I'm PK'd in GW2 will be the last time I play. There's always someone that has to ruin other people's fun.
