Here is a chance for a-net and others to see how to make the replayability more enticing on the upcoming titles. post your playing style/amount and the why's/when's/how's of getting bored with GW, as well as your suggestions to keep the replay value high.

~I am a pretty active player (8-10 hrs a week or so)...

~I have finished all 3 chapters on 3 characters

~I have been playing for about 9 months or so (with the last 3 focusing more on pvp)

~I have received several pvp titles as well as pve...some nice armour and equipment.... so.... I have done the whole 'grinding' thing..

...and GW is starting to lose some steam for me...I am now trying to get into gvg... but as I have an erratic schedule..high end pvp is not much of an option for me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I want to make it clear that I am NOT complaining/ranting/griping about GW. It is by far the best online game ever created...and my favorite game bar none. I am wanting to make clear some of the replay 'problems' to help in the creation of future chapters/games.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
here are the three top reasons why I think its getting boring for me.

1. PVE is dull. ~Where, after finishing three chapters several times, is the motivation to continue this mmorpg? the quests/missions are linear and boring after the first couple times....

2. PVP (the good kind) is hard to break into with a schedule like mine. and the type of player base in the lower end pvp areas (pug areas like AB, RA) is chalk full of immature, 12 year olds.

3. GW seems to be lacking an immersive atmosphere for such a wonderful 'escapist's world'. why do I always hear about politics, sports, and world issues when I log on to 'escape' into the world of GW?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Things I hope to see in future Games (in addition to the excellent ideas we have heard about GW2) by anet that will help the replay value:
Basically it boils down to: More interactive, interesting, immersive pve world.
~why not have new bosses/areas/quests/greens... weekly instead of weekend events? It would not be difficult, for instance, to change a bosses name, change the enemies in a specific area, write quest dialog etc... and keep it changing.
~why not creat a more 'choose' your own adventure atmosphere. choices you make determine your characters alignment/ faction/ appearence/ abilities/ quests/ ......(enter whatever you want here) instead of the linear missions we have now. (this was attempted with NF... but I think we need more)
~why not make skills more interactive with the pve world? for instance... you cannot enter the ice cave unless you use[card]flare[/card] to melt the entrance. you cannot enter the enemies castle unless you have a 'sin to use a skill to pick the lock...etc...
~I, for one, would love to see a 'Role Playing' only server to help with the player atmosphere... I know.... its 'too much like WOW'... but honestly... it creates a whole new way for players to play the game.... by just changing the name from 'district one' to 'role playing district'.... why is this bad?
~I would love to see perpetual 'quest' givers as well... giving you a viable way to make money by ALWAYS having a quest to complete like... kill XX amount of chars... bring me XX materials... investigate XX situation...etc.. and actually give you a decent amount of money for it... one thing GW lacks is a good money making scheme.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I would love to hear the opinions on others concerning the replayability of the game we love. And while A-net has said that 'they dont mind if players take a break and come back in a few months' ..... I'm sure they would prefer to keep us around for as long as possible. *daydreams about GW2*

PvE needs to be better. I've beaten all 3 chapters on my Elem, and I started a Tank and a Necro...tank wasn't for me, I enjoyed the necro but after playing for a while, I just couldn't bring myself to finish any of the campaigns - not because I didn't like Necro, but because in PvE it's kind of like, if you've done it once, that's all you need. The replayability of the campaigns are not very good, and the reason that I was getting bored for a while is because, no matter what Anet says, once you beat the game there is no incentive to keep PvEing. The drops are terrible, it's impossible to sell almost anything, and most of the titles have little to no use. Hopefully hard mode will bring functionality to more of the titles, GW:EN will actually give us a reason to carry over titles besides just for aesthetic reasons, and that the drops in hard mode will give us a reason to keep playing. All they need to do is put in a 12-23 wand, and although it basically has little to no advantage over an 11-22 considering no one attacks with a wand,people would go crazy and at least they would be sellable. I haven't sold a wand or staff in months.

This was honestly false marketing IMO. I played through NF, the only thing you could influence was like, which hero you couldn't get til the end of the game. That was such nonsense and really disappointing.

oddly enough, just reading the other thread about level caps.

I'm gonna go full 180 degrees from my original position and say that no level cap will increase replayability.

That won't be enough, however. Random spawns will help, semi-permanent effects on a persistant world will help, more backstory on different races will help.

In other words, as you say, a more immersive world, a world we have a real effect on (and, forgive me, but I want more than to just pick locks or blow open ice doors!).

Eventually, I'd like to be able to actually change the environment of the world. Maybe even have our little Hall of Monuments become a "home" of sorts that we can decorate and show off to others...

meh, I can always dream.

I'm an active player: 8-20 hours a week, depending on my schedule.
I have been playing Guild Wars for almost two years (been playing since late May 2005).
I have also been a part of a guild (in some form) and active for the entire time (most of that time as an officer or guild leader).

I don't find the game boring at all. That said, I play other games from time to time too: I try not to burn out on GW. I'm very involved in my gaming community of friends, within my alliance, and I hang out in Mesmer gatherings. It's all about the community IMO.

Yeah, sometimes the PvE is a little repetitive, but I have a lot of titles to get, still, so that never really dulls.

My PvP squad is always working on getting better, and so that's never boring either.

I could honestly play GW in its current incarnation for at least another year, no sweat.

I know ArenaNet is designing with an eye toward enriching the cooperative play experience, so as far as I know, they're already on track to make the game more interesting for me. And then Hard Mode is coming up - what fun!! I don't need 55 farming or lots of money to have a good time in GW.

More non-instanced zones.
No teleporting (or maybe only be able to teleport when you're in a town).
Don't make all monsters agressive. Why would just a group of random Skales or whatever want to attack you?=s
More options for customizing the looks of your character.
Something to do with friends/guildies besides slaying monsters.

Luckily, most of this is coming out in Guild Wars 2.=P

I got bored of it about 2 months after Nightfall release (I have been playing for 18 months according to /age).

The problem with PvE is the campaign mission setup wasn't that fun...It doesn't actually make me want to send more characters through it after I've completed the game. Quite the opposite for Factions actually - Factions was like a test - How UNFUN can we make it to try to force a character to finish the story. Also sending one profession through isn't a wildly different experience then sending some other one through.

So to keep playing after campaign completion you have other goals. You either farm to get "leet stuff" or you get the titles. Neither of which have really outragious rewards or reasoning behind doing them for me atleast.

The problem with PvP is that it loses alot of its luster if you don't have an good active guild or friends. Without a team you are left to do PvP that only requires you - which is limited to "pwning whammos" in RA and Hero Battles. If niether excites you..too bad. If you do have a team, they gotta be pretty active or good because noone will find fun in repeatedly getting stomped into the ground in GvG or Ha (partly due to the fact that you'll almost never get to face other new teams as opponents in GvG, and never in Ha basically). No Learning curve is what I'm getting at.

I'd like to see PUG Districts where heroes and henchmen are unavailable/unrequired for missions (not quests though, that's extreme). Playing with real people and using different tactics greatly increases replay value.

Wait for hard mode to be introduced. You'll be interested in the game again when that happens. Just cause it got boring for you doesn't mean its boring for everybody.

As for some of your suggestions like interactivity of skills with the environment, that's not a bad idea, and could well be done in GW2.

Actually, it would be enough if Anet just added more items and stuff into more areas (such as guardian of the hunt), so players would be inspired to visit old places again.

Absolutely.

I'm almost at 2 years of playing, and I have to say that I don't find the game in the least bit boring. Here's my philosophy...

1. Try every aspect of PvE solo, without heroes or henchmen. You'd be amazed how much of the game you can complete without touching any part of NPC AI. Yes, it requires a lot of trial and error (shifting builds and strategies), but in the end it is that much more satisfying when you complete a task/area.

2. If you can't do it solo, try to do it with one other person. Dual teams can complete almost every area of the game, except some of the very end areas.

3. If all else fails, PuG it. PuGs can be frustrating, imperfect, etc...but their replay value is simply immense because of that "unknown" factor. I can personally say that I remember most of the times I completed a mission with a PuG, but can't remember hardly any of the times that I completed a mission with heroes/henchmen. That speaks volumes into replayability.

That's my philosophy, and I'm sticking to it because it is the source that continues to let me squeeze every ounce of enjoyment I can find in PvE. If you've completed all three campaigns with three characters in only a few months and are now "bored", you may want to consider alternate playstyles. You never know...you might like it.

Maybe to keep it fresh PvE side, have them add in some neat quest that are actually worthwhile to complete every so often or have season quest that are only available in the fall or winter for example. Even time specific quest would be a neat thing. Not really asking much like reinventing the wheel but I know stuff like that is no easy task. I just say this because when Guild Wars first came out, they had often added new quest in several of the updates and it was something new for my main guy to try out.

As for farming, they might get rid of the AE damage nerf in normal mode.. but yea, the PvE in this game is really lackluster. Almost all of the optional quests they made for last 2 chapters have absolutely no point other than maybe to level your heroes.

At least in Prophecies you got some cool skills for completing the quests there and A-net thought that was a horrible reward so they replaced it with useless collector tokens and some trite amount of experience and gold. Hell, they even took out the weapon rewards that Prophecies had. Although most of the weapons are useless now, it was kind of cool to get weapons with different mods that you were less likely to see before Factions/Nightfall.

But yea, I'm still annoyed that I have to waste 1k gold on some useless skills so I can use them in specific areas. Oh well, that debate was long killed by A-net and their decision to make more gold sinks.

hey, your case is exactly identical to me!
Recently i moved to somewhere else with different timezone as my friends/guildies
I dont feel "very" bored but whenever i want and can go PVP (say, HA) my friends are all sleeping and since im still pretty low in rank i cant find any group at all
So yea, when i feel bored there is always PVP, but this doesnt work for me (and i assume for many others as well)
The list of what i hate about current HA
1) Rank elitism
2) Killcount
3) Elitism is driving me crazy
4) Elitism of coz
5) I hate elitism

Unfortunately i cant think of any solution to this, so :'[

Nothing compares to the thrill of achieving something for the first time. Taking my monk through Prophecies really felt epic. Everything was new and exciting - every unlocked skill, every level up, every new piece of armor, every zone reached and viewed for the first time. I did it again with another character, but it just wasn't the same. This is true for each campaign. There are other ways I have fun in GW, obviously, but being a newbie was the best.

It's the reason I understand Anet's plan to raise the level cap. It provides for a huge world and an epic storyline - like Prophecies on steroids. My hope is that there will always be something new and fun to do, so much that I can barely experience it all with two or three favorite characters.

I've been playing on and off since release, but more off in the last 7 months.

For me, the game lacks a lot of community elements that make other MMO's more interesting.

Also, the expansions haven't had the same feel as Prophecies did, they are too cut and dry.

I look at it where the replay value is still there, even after working thru so many missions.

I have 9 characters that have beaten all 3 chapters (my dervish is the slacker, she's only beaten nightfall). What's fun about it is I have used all of the professions, so I have elites in everything.

I've been going back, so each of the primary professions elites are captured so my heroes can run any build, along with the primary able to do anything.

Working on titles, helping the alliance out, hey, it's a different thing everyday.

Considering the fact I'm at work and still reading the forums there, it gives me ideas of what next to try when I get home and have a chance to play. If the interest wasn't there, I probably would be on CNN or something

hmm, I must say that my exp has been completely different - I've rarely been bored with the game.

I took 6 chars thru Proph, 5 of those + 1 assassin thru Fact, and 2 of those (so far) thru NF. I have several duplicate profs (2 W, 1 ele, 1 mes) at various stages of Fact, and 1 para that I'm working on.

When I do get tired of doing A, I'll go do B for a while, then maybe a little C, i.e. - some missions/quests on this or that char, a little farming, spend a cpl days helping PUGs thru some of the more difficult missions.

The PvE aspect of GW is absolutely ridiculous and boring. There are no "leet" items, you make your own personal armor instead of finding it, there is no point farming and spending ours trying to get a certain item when you can get an item that does the same thing from a collector, etc. Granted, GW is not about finding godly items, etc., but it doesn't mean that it is fun like this. The PvE is so watered down and babyed that it's tedious to play.
Moreover, there is absolutely no reason to PvE once you've got every rune, skill, upgrade, etc. unlocked. Oh big deal you got a PvE title... that means jack squat when it comes to PvP.

IMO, I think they should just make GW PvP only, seeing as it's the only rewarding thing in the game and is the end game of Guild Wars.

Overall, GW is a great idea, but with all the struggles of trying to make the game "fair and balanced" just makes it very dry and boring. You can have fair and balanced play while adding a lot to the game through awesome items, armors, etc.

I dunno.
I had fun with GW while I had my friends online. Now they left for most of them it has become boring.
My fun never lied in the PVE or whatever. GW's storyline is quite nice in fact, not poorer than, say, WoW. GW's PVE, still, is limited, in terms width of landscapes, and alternate quests.
But GW's PvP side is clearly one of the best, if not the best, of all the the MMO I tested. After that, everything remains in the hand of the community.
So IMHO, GW has nothing to compare to other MMO.
To increase replayability and decrease boredom many things have already been proposed:
-An Auction House
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10075967
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=20264
-Minigames, other than week events, that can earn you money (and not COST YOU MONEY FOR A TITLE)
-A Roleplay side.
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=12840
-A Guild House, where guilds could put their adds to recruit
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=80612
-Hard Mode, but clever hard mode, not just multiply damage, health, casting time and number of mobs by 2.http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10085034

I call it GuildWars fatigue. And it stroke me when I read about GW2 and GW:EN.

GW is still the best online game I ever played, I just can't find goals anymore or goals that are worth playing for. Been playing other games last month and tried a few times to pick up where I left and have some fun in GW but I leave after 5-10 minutes again.

Anet launched the knews about GW2 way to soon for me.

First off I want to say most immature players are age 16-25, average being around 19-20. Not 12 year olds, it's usually people that know better than to do, what they do. But don't like losing, among other things and throw a hissy fit about it.

Anyways, I'm bored of GW so much that I can't be hassled to play, I log on to say hi to people then go back to LOTRO or go outside. GW probably has lost me for the most part, till hardmode, which won't keep me tied for long. But it'll always be the game I come back to when bored with every other game and for a few more weeks has number 1 on my list, till LOTRO steals it away.

There isn't much anet can do to make GW more fun for me, I'm totally played out. Oh and I've been playing for about 22 months. Have 11 characters, beat all 3 campaigns, all that jazz.

Everyone gets bored of games/video games eventually. Personally, I'm a little bored, but it's held my attention for over a year now, which is about a year more than every other game I've played. Diablo 2 would be the next highest game time I ever racked up, and it's only around 3-4 months.

It really doesn't bother me since I feel like I definately got my money's worth. Besides, even with taking a break from it, I can guarantee I'll be back. It doesn't matter. If you're bored, stop playing. It really is that simple.

My suggestion:

Open a gates, make Factions and NF runnable.
Its fine to play through EVERY zone the first time but it was nice in GW:P to be able to skip large sections with 2nd/3rd toon etc!

You can always go back, and personally I found fighting/running through an area to get a shortcut was fun. (NOT FUN: doing same in factions on first day and finding the gate to the village locked!!!)
