Nightfall was kinda of letdown, most of the tracks seem to be 'characterless', except for a few, namely the finale piece played during the last mission.
It would be great if the Soule brothers could have a choir to go along with their masterpiece for GW:EN, to give it a more 'epical' feel. |
Factions was BY FAR the best!
NF is, as you said, characterless. I don't care if its desert and in ancient Africa all they have for instrments is drums and sticks, music needs to me something that can get stuck in your head!
And Prophecies, most of it was TOO epic. Cut down on the variations, make the main tune discernable and strong, make sure you can humm it in your head without exploding.
Factions was just amazing. The theme was the best GW song ever, and one of my favorite game themes. Shing Jea had this epic training feel. The Forrest had a very dark rich feel. The Jade sea had like a perfect Krakens and wind feel. The music was very strong, very epic yet pronounced.
I actauly liked the NF theme, because you could hum that in your head too. However, TECH DEVS! LISTEN UP! it is important that the music be able to max out at the level of sound. GW as it stands, has the music very faint and when you hear the same song quiet over and over again, it's almost like your subconcious gets tired of it before your mind gets to listen to it. Nevertheless, turn the volume up and get PWNED in the ears when you get attacked.
Prophecies music was sorta good sorta bad. A lot of it was like fantasia, which is the bad part. Just as you pick up on a tune, the song starts a new one. Theres too many changes and too much going on at once. The theme and that one song that plays in the desert (used to only play at the end of the fort ranik mission) are REALLY good though.
Summary:
Factions music is like perfect, but could use battle music.
Prophecies music is too fantasia-like and needs to settle on a main chorus more.
Nightfall music has battle music, but it had no character.
BONUS:
Soule's music for Morrowind and Oblivion are amazing.
Morrowind's theme is the best game theme i've ever heard.
Theres a song that plays in towns in Oblivion (it gets interupted by a lil wind instrument, but it comes back to the main chorus again) truley amazing.
It has some sweet battle and cave music, but theres like only 3 different versions each.
In the end, try making the music more pronouced like factions. Did a good job in fantasy with the elder scrolls. Add battle and cave music, but have more than 3 different random tracks each. (Maybe regional battle music the builds off the regonal theme like Freelancer)
Take this advice, i'm looking forward to getting the soundtrack with the GW2 CE.
All criticism aside, i'm really glad we have Soule for GW.
