from what im experiencing with my characters
i think that trying to open the chest more offen and it being empty prolongs the whole resetting of the chest

also my first character i opened chest with
i tried all the time and chest where always empty
finially when it resetted i got all purple's
after my first character's chest where now dropping

i tried second character which i didnt keep trying to open chest with knowing it was longer than my first character to wait "so why would i bother checking if my first character was getting zilch"
opened all his chest and where mostly golds with one purple
although most golds req12 and 13's

so i hope this helps everyone with guiding there characters to get the most out of these free chest as we can

does checking reset the counter? Yes, checking resets the counter. Don't touch any of the chests for at LEAST 31 days.

I checked a bunch of times with my ranger (before reading this thread) and then checked well after 30 days and they're still empty!

From now on, I'm not gonna even touch them for a LONG time...

wow, I had no idea it was this random. I actually sent a question to tech support about it before I found this thread in the forums hehe.

Well, here's my situation:

I have a monk who is my main character, opened all the free chests on April 4th on her, and the first few that my warrior and ritualist could get to.

About 1 month later, my warrior and ritualist's chests had reset, but the monk's hadn't.

Today (a bit more than a month later) I had finished Nightfall on both the warrior and ritualist and opened all the chests for them including the first few which had again rest and still the monk's hadn't reset.

The monk's still haven't reset and it's been about 2 1/2 months now.

One thing that I noticed today though, I had done the warrior's chests a few days ago, but I just finished getting my new necro through Nightfall, so I took her out to open all her chests and took my boyfriend's monk with her. Every single chest we opened gave us a gold item along with some plat.

Next we got out my ritualist and his warrior and we got half purple items and half gold items out of that run.

Now that I think back.... the first time I opened all the chests on my monk, some of the chests didn't even give me an item. Some just gave me gold.

So I really think you have something there somewhere in your calculations about either time played on a particular character or items found on a particular character affecting the reset time. I also think that perhaps loot you've picked up the same day may affect the drops all around on your account, since my first run on 1 character gave all gold items and the run on 2nd character gave some purples.

About checking the chests though... I had checked several times on both my monk and warrior and it still reset for my warrior, just not my monk. And of course my monk is the one that gets played all the time.

Hello Amy,

This is not an issue with your character or the game. Chances are you are trying too soon to reopen the chest which will in effect reset the timer. Try waiting a little longer than a month before attempting to open the chest. If you do it too soon the timer will be reset and you will have to continue waiting. If you are the only person experiencing this issue then it is most likely because you are trying again too soon. Please review the links we sent in our previous message for more info on the game mechanics of Do not touch chests. Thank you for your time and understanding.

Regards,
The Guild Wars Support Team Although I would really swear that some of my characters had checked chests without the resetting hehe. But this is a genuine response from tech support.

Thats why I write down the date and time each of my characters opens the chests each month.

hi guys, sorry i didnt read the full thread, so the next info may or may not have been posted already, but perhaps it will be helpful to some (if people are still trying to crack the formula)

4 weeks ago, i stopped playing GW due to finals comming, and i needed to focus on them, so, for 4 weeks (add or remove days) i didnt play, nor farmed, neither did mission, much less went out for the treasure chests with any of my characters.

3 days ago, i went out with my warrior, he had only been able to open the chests twice since NF came out, but he had his chance 3 days ago to open them, and they were all gold drops.

next day i did the same with my mesmer. and the next day i did the same with my necro.

and today, i got the chests from the morning till the evening with the remaining of my chars (i have all classes, but only my paragon and rit didnt get them, my paragon due to the survivor title, and my rit due to whats coming next)

as i was opening the chests today with my other characters, the money reward was decreasing, and some got a few purples, up to the point, where my last character, my monk, who was the first to open all the chests like 2 or so months ago, was having half the money reward, as well as most of them being purple.

there was this "Degradation" within a single day, and all of my chars hadnt opened the chests for 4 weeks straight.

so, my theory is this one:
the longer the time you wait to open them, the more chances for gold items you get, and the bigger the money quantity reward there is. BUT, the more characters open the same chest (even if they are different characters), the more the chances to get a gold decrease as well as the overall gold given to your character.

this makes me believe the chests are actually "Account" wide, so to speak, and this is to prevent people from making characters just to go fast with them to reach the close chests, get the rewards, delete them and make another one, over and over.

this seems to give a disadvantage to accounts with more pve characters, but the accounts that have fewer pve characters will receive a long term benefit (or it could be other way around too, as the raw gold decreases ever so slowly by each subsequent character)

hope this info helps a little bit if there are still people trying to find the formula.
and if this has been said before, apologies.

I agree that the chests are probably account wide. I started running all of my pve characters to open the chests again (10 chars, 1 for each prof) and I noticed that the first ~20 chests or so were gold drops, then I started to see an increased (~20-30%) rate of purple drops for the next 20 chests, then the purple rate increased dramatically after that.

I did all of this within a short period of time, say 2 days, before I gave up on it for a bit. I haven't checked since, but I'll post back when I do.
