Hanging on connection screens
blood4blood
Came home from work & tried to connect to GW...
Computer #1) Hangs on the initial "Connecting..." screen then goes to Err = 58 after about 5 minutes.
Computer #2) Same as #1.
Computer #3) Connects past the first screen, goes to the screen where you can select the character you want to play. I selected a character, and ever since it's been hanging on the "Connecting" screen that displays the map background (this one happens to be trying to connect to Bone Palace for nearly 15 minutes now).
All three comps are going through a Linksys router, all are WinXP (one is Media Center Ed.). I've used this same set up for over a year with no changes whatsoever, and I've never had this problem before tonight. I have had error Code=058 a couple times before, but it always connected on a second try.
ISP is Comcast, I've been having no problems connecting to anything else online (including other games, like the LOTRO beta), ran a ping test (44-45ms no packet loss to pcpitstop.com), d/l test OK (6800kb/s).
Any suggestions?
EDIT/UPDATE:
I called Comcast, they said it's a problem with the game servers, not the Internet connection from Comcast. They ran a ping test from their servers directly to my modem - 15ms with no packet loss. I connected to two other online games, a Ventrilo server, and a TS2 server, all with no difficulty whatsoever.
So I went to the NCSoft support site and filled out the "Ask A Question" ticket, hoping against hope that it would work for a change...and no dice (aka "Internal Server Error"). Dear Anet/NCSoft: This is about the tenth time in the past year I've tried to fill out a Support ticket, and it has NEVER worked.
EDIT/UPDATE #2: Well 45 minutes later it finally took my support ticket question, so I guess that's a good sign.
EDIT/UPDATE #3: As of about 7AM everything is working again. I made no changes. NCSupport did send a reply (directed me to the Err Code=058 article...). *shrug* No real explanation for what went wrong or what fixed it, but at least it's working again.

Having the same issue at this moment. Guess what? ISP is Comcast. Ding ding ding we have a weiner.
About two months ago Comcast users were having terrible lag issues on Guild Wars, guess Comcast really hates Anet. Who knows.

I just now started getting the same problem as both of you two.......comcast ISP too.....first time I've had this happen though.

It's Comcast.
Try the -image prefatch then defrag the computer.
Afterwards try GW agian...if nothing good happens call comcast.

I wanted to add I am also in the Baltimore area on Comcast's network. I sent Anet's support a ticket on this and as a last resort I'll give Comcast a call but I really hate dealing with their CSR's. I've tried playing with the DNS settings, messed with the Host file but I don't think this has anything to do with any of that though.
mwpeck
I tried changing my DNS settings earlier, as with you, it had no affect here......although I also cant access gameamp, or guildwiki (the unofficial one, I can get to the official one fine). Anyone else having troubles beyond connecting to Guild Wars?
PS: I Would call, but it is too late, and I cant connect to the comcast forums, and their live chat is bugged and throws an error when I try getting on that. :/

Comcast customer here too and having the same problems.

Having the same problem. But I live in Portugal. Guess what, no comcast here.

I too have Comcast, and I also have the same problem. I cannot connect to GW's servers. I get code 0058. Interesting to note that I also cannot connect to the "Unofficial" GWWIKI either, just like the other poster. I CAN connect just fine to GURU, which is notoriously bad about pages timing out when people are mobbing the site. I have much LESS trouble getting pages there to load faster than usual, which doesn't make any sense to me.
I am piggy-backing on my Uncle's connection, and he is the account holder, so I don't think I can call up Tech-Support and expect any love from them. If anyone gets any answers from Comcast if they called, please post them here.
Thanks,
-Prometheus.

I just got kicked and cannot get back in - UK so different provider.

Yea i'm having the same problem. better be fixed by tommorow..Hard Mode FTW.
Hysteria
Well, it seems this isn't just a GW issue as there are quite a few sites not accessible through Comcast's network. www.Pair.com, www.Digg.com, www.vox.com and http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page are all unaccessible from Comcast in my area. I tried to phone support but after 20 minutes on hold I hung up. I don't have the patience to wait just to be told they don't see any problems currently On a bright note though, with more people not being able to access certain sites perhaps this will get the ball rolling to get this fixed.
Vauxhall
I've got the same problem. I'm in central Virginia and I have comcast.
DRUETSR
Me and another guild mate are from Georgia, both on Comcast and both unable to connect error: 58. Also unable to connect to certain websites.

yea, i can't even get into my Guilds site to let them know whast going on...sux cause im leader..Dx

<<Comcast near baltimore too.
Most websites are working and I am listening to my guild GVG on vent now, but code=058.
I have a tech coming tomorrow morning because my service has been on and off for the past 4 days. They say that there has been a "level 2 outage" and they have been working on it, but it doesn't explain my service working fine at night the past few days. They also couldn't explain how my service has been working the past months with the wrong MAC address.
Ah, I have tons of comcast hate stories since I moved here, whereas the last place I lived the service was always perfect. A few months ago, their local hub couldn't handle traffic at some busy times or something then one tech told me I had a virus, one told me my modem was faulty, ETC ETC. It took 10+ calls before they got around to fixing it. Did I mention they somehow accidentally deleted my account 2 months ago then overbilled me. Oh and all of the lies.. I could write a novel.
I think the only other provider around here is standard DSL, but some surrounding counties have FIOS. Maybe the recent storm broke some of their local infrastructure and the 058 is their DNS getting back in sync. Got me, sigh.

Same problem for me as well.
Like Hysteria, I can't get to the websites, especially to Guild Wiki, which is really irking me.

Not the computer!
Like the early post guy with three computers I have two, neither will connect. The one I use regularly takes a password (and knows when I type in a bad one) but never connects. Gives error 058. The computer I have not used in a while tries to download a file, but shows ZeroK downloaded at ZeroK/second, and stays that way.
There is a note on the Guildwars pages about an NCsoft outage for maintenance today. Don't know how often they do those but it seems like too good a coincidence to me. Don't know the connection between the Guildwars servers and the NCsoft servers, but it would seem likely there is one somewhere.
Also, tried to log on to Forums here two hours ago, system would take user name and password, give me the message, "Thank you for logging on", but would drop me back on the page I came from, NOT LOGGED ON. Did this repeatedly over 30 minute span, never got logged on anyplace other than that thank you screen. Did not matter if I let the system move me off the thank you screen or if I clicked the 'hurry up' and take me someplace else option.

Hey all, {I too am in Georgia btw for the poster above me}
I got off with a CSR from Comcast after an amazingly short wait to speak to a live person regarding this issue {5-min}. After giving him the 2 sites I couldn't connect to, Unofficial Wiki page & Arenanet's server {216.107.240.202} he placed me on hold for 1-min and came back and said:
"Yes-sir, we are having a server routing issue that is affecting some sites right now. I don't have the details of what exactly is wrong, but I have a lot of complaints here that have been logged this afternoon about Myspace, and other sites such as the ones you mentioned sir."
I then asked if the problem was minor and expected to be fixed fairly soon or if the traffic could possibly be routed around the problem servers and if the area affected was regional or widespread, and he replied:
"The information I have here is limited to the area where your service is being disrupted sir, I use your zip-code to zero in on locally presenting problems and I get a summary of current information that doesn't really go into too much detail, but I can tell you from the time of the first complaints and the numbers of customers affected that it is a BIG PROBLEM, and unfortunately I couldn't offer a guess as to when it may be fixed. But I know that our engineers and technicians are very aware of the problem and are doing their best to solve the issue."
I thanked him and then finished the call.
Sooooo, I hope this will keep some of you from pulling your hair out trying to diagnose a router or cable-modem issue. It's a problem that is above us, and unfortunately, I'll have to wait on doing the Gate Of Madness mission another time I suppose.
Good Journeys to ye'

I am also having this problem I got kick off at 4:30pm this afternoon.I feel the problem is comcast not anet.I also called comcast and they ran there ping test to and said it was fine,of course its fine I am local so my ping will be great from my modem to them.So I did some more digging I download this program called pingplotter from cnet and I found something outI have major packet loss on 4 out of hops. The program works great. What seems to me is that the problem is on 1 of ATT lines that comcast uses.So call up comcast and tell them the problem is on there end.I am doing that right now.
Location; Rockville, MD
Software I used pingplotter, you can download it here http://www.download.com/PingPlotter-...ml?tag=lst-0-2

Thanks for the update Prometheus. Hopefully we'll have connectivity by the time "Hard Mode" is up and running.
BTW - I installed GW to another PC and was able to download updates, but could not connect when I tried to log on. I found this odd. If it's routing, I'd think that the download servers are on the same subnet as the game servers. But who knows? Still sounds like it's mostly a Comcast problem. :/

Hopefully it is fixed by this weekend. I have Sunspear and Lightbringer points to farm as well as trying hard mode.
Thanks for the update all.

They probably have the update system on a different server, so it doesnt kill people who are in the games, when a mass amount of people start updating.

There was another warning before that one concerning the connection to the NCsoft store and changes on the players account.
May not explain the connection to the game itself, but i think the issue is not comcast either. I'm not a comcast user and I'm still getting the same problem. So is the other guy from UK.

I think it is a comcast problem, even though you and a few others are not comcast users, it is possible you are being routed through a comcast node, which, if they are having issues in some area's, could affect you guys too.

I have Comcast in Baltimore too - having the same errors. I was able to download the new patch from Anet though - it just won't let me sign in (Error 0058).
I think Hard Mode is live, judging by the 800+ file patch. *sob*

I live in the south-east area of PA, with Comcast... and am getting no errors. I can go to any site, and play the game/update fine. Maybe it hasn't hit my area yet? But I'm hoping stuff stays working ^_^
