Why is ECTO price in the toilet?
Andisa Kalorn
I expected this to happen. First Anet nerfs gold farming. But then they leave rares/greens/etc. exempt. Thus, now everyone who wants to farm is forced to farm things that fluctuate based on the market. So now everyone wants to sell ectos/rares/greens because it's the only source of income. But if everyone is selling these, the prices drop.
The rune situation amuses me the most. Superior vigor keeps falling. But minor vigor keeps getting more expensive. So... in an effort to halt gold inflation to make things better for casual players, Anet has made things cheaper for the rich and more expensive for the poor. GG.
The problem is that Anet thinks the amount of gold people have has a huge impact. It didn't, only on high-end stuff that no one needed (like ecto). In the time I'd been playing this game, things were only getting cheaper because things kept getting easier to acquire (especially with inscriptions and better salvaging). High supply outweighed gold inflation. Now it's easier than ever to get ecto, and harder than ever to get minor runes.
Back to ecto though, I'm pretty sure that ecto prices have always dipped temporarily when the boardwalk is open. It's only more noticeable now because ecto was dropping in price due to the farming changes.

I'm one of those poor players and I've been waiting for Superiors to drop in price for months. It doesn't matter to me if Minors rise in price because they drop the most in the wild.

Anytime scrolls+ normal drop rate = more ecto's = less value

For example, my boyfriend has started playing through prophecies again on a new account, and wants to do it without me paying for everything. He is not happy about the rune prices. As for superior vigor, he wouldn't even think of getting it. Even though it's cheaper it's still way too expensive for him.
He's a casual player, I'm not. So I benefit, while he finds it harder to buy basic runes. I'm happy about ecto getting cheaper, since I'm working on getting FoW armor.
Edit: I don't think minors drop THAT much either during normal play. I haven't gotten a minor vigor in months, just lots of minor inspirations and whatnot... and this is despite the fact that I spent a lot of time playing or farming in areas that drop runes. But ecto, on the other hand, is very easy to get.
JONO51
I doubt sup vig will drop too much. I think there will be a breakpoint(i think 15k) when its better to get sup than major so everyone buys sup, they go back up. During this time minor and major will drop.

Soooo.... does this mean that people are also taking more PUGs and balanced groups instead of lifeless WoW-like farming dweebs into places like FoW and UW these days, now that ecto farming isn't such a big deal?

Either way, I doubt everyone will suddenly decide to start questing in PUGs. I used to try that... it sucked. The only way to really go into FoW or UW with a balanced group is be in a guild that likes to do that. Otherwise, someone will always take the wrong quest at the wrong time.

ehm....
do you know that now bots are farming ectos and not more golds?
well, no comment.

p.s. Studying economics is a pretty decent gig if you can grasp the material. I'm set to receive my M.A. degree this Saturday, and my first 'real' job starts off at 79k USD.

Well, they're currently 7.5k at the material trader, and I just sold 9 for roughly 6.6k each. At least we won't hear too much complaining about who has favor anymore.

"Repeated map entry no longer reduces loot." That's a total lie. Not only have I, but several friends have seen farming code still being activated. Want an example? here.
I've been farming the cupcakes since start of the event. I can get about 1-4 cupcakes a minute for the first 10-20 minutes through zoning. After which the droprate reduces significantly. after so long i'll get a cupcake after 5 runs. My one friend had a dry spell for 14 runs! I know this isn't just happening to me since me and a friend start solo farming at the same time and can notice the code hit us after the same amount of runs. He'll whisper to me his droprate per run. We both do the same run with the same build.

Tarus, you really need to look up and read. The two people on either side of unienaule pointed out the part that he's referring to.
Also, go and actually read the update notes.

Okay where are you farming and in what mode? Me and about 3 others have been doing Nolani in normal and have all noticed the difference.

The anti-farm code is still in place for me. I tried the byzzr monk farm with my necro last night. First couple of runs were fine, then I did not get ANYTHING at all. So I then moved onto Zelnehlun, same thing, first couple of runs I get 2 golds and the bow, and some gold coins and a couple of items. After 4 runs I got one white recurve bow, 6,7,8 similar drops with a tiny bit of money.
I am seeing a significant decrease in drops normally after 3 runs, I've had this for a little while now, when they put the build out that included the rare materials in the loot scaling. Thats how long its been.
I couldn't give a toss about anti-farm, but I believe Tarus is right, the anti-farm code is still there.

If you ask me, falling Ecto price = a good thing. Allows me to rebuild my ecto supply.
Moa Bird Cultist
First things first, I have made more money since HM was introduced than I have ever previously made in the space of six months. I now have twice as much gold in my storage as I've ever had. That would seem to indicate to me that the new loot system is working as advertised, since a lot of that has come from selling rare loot, something I've never really bothered with before. But anyway, I farm plains of jarin too, only I don't just do the 1st group of spiders and iboga, I actually do most of the zone, including the paragon boss as well. Drops are good there, they're REALLY good. I would consider this particular example a fluke, but on one run, I got 8 gold items and nearly 4k in drops. Drop me a pm if you want the build (My only gripe is that the ele boss wont drop elite tomes for me )
So anyway, why are ectos cheap? Simply because supply outstrips demand at the present time. Not only is normal mode uw smite running far quicker now, but there are already duo 605 teams for hard mode, where I understand the ecto drops are quite a bit better. So yes, ectos are dropping a lot more than they did before the update, which will naturally destabilize their market value. That is essentially why. And I agree with the vast majority when I say that's a good thing - the only people this will actually hurt are the super rich, IE those who trade in ectos as currency.
Whew, thats basically all I have to say on the subject..

Was doing the Byzzr farm in Hard Mode. Got some quite nice gear for the first five times.. something every time. Then it quickly waned over the next five until I was getting nothing.
I continued to get nothing consistantly for the next twenty runs.... then something like 101 cash... then nothing again for another ten.... and at that point I went to do other things.
Tried farming other places.... Got nothing.
Nothing anywhere.
My necro seemed unable to get any loot anywhere she farmed.... so eventually I gave up entirely and went back to mapping with my Assassin.
I seriously hope that resets whatever coding might still be in place... as otherwise I might have to prat around through an entire explorable area with my Necro to reboot it... and honestly, doing that just to reboot anti-farming code seems to reduce any worth in the experience.
*Coughs*
As for Ectos.... doesn't phase me in the slightest. I've never even seen an Ecto glob.... I've only ever had like... 2 Obsidian Shards (during the time I was dualling in FoW with another person and heroes, she got like 20 shards... and I got 2 ... It was TOTALLY unbalanced).

Yes I agree farming code is still in place.
I farmed kryta in hard mode got a few golds and a load of purples and thought this is great not so bad after all. Second run I got a couple of purples no golds third run no purples or golds and about 800g cash mostly from completing areas. Since then all my characters in all modes in all zones are getting really really poor drops.
I left farming in hard mode for a week and played the game and finished factions which I hadn't finished yet - no gold drops to be had there, oh well..
tried farming in hard mode at kryta again today. Nothing. I went with heroes and hencies so I expect a certain decrease in drops and was getting a drop every 25-30 kills that was mainly mergoyle skulls or bog skale fins.
I have killed all the bosses in Kryta at least 10-15 times each in hard mode and haven't had a single elite tome.
So yes, there is farming code and it still bites you in the bum. I'm wondering as this was my old farming area, if my farming code has not been reset for some reason and that is causing the problem, but if they've removed it completely you would think not.

I think the reason the price of Ecto is dropping is because of the recent introduction of Portal Scrolls. American players no-longer have to wait to gain favor to farm UW so there is more of it on the market. Because of these scrolls I expect the price of ectos to fall. The equlibrium price I expect is about 5 to 6k. It should hover around this price for a while until the demand for Ectos increases with the release of G.W.E.N. I don't expect the price to increase past 8k each during the next couple of months.
Thats my input.
Thats my input.
Liberations
Ecto prices are going down because the amount of solo-farmers getting ectos has gone down. Yes, ectos are exempt from loot-scaling, but other things aren't. That means less people going out to solo farm. FoW armor price is going to drop (from the decrease in material price), so I still don't see why people are still complaining that loot-scaling ruined their chance of getting FoW armor. Be patient, and things will straighten out for your FoW dreams. Now for existing FoW armor people... well their armor will be devalued, but you can't keep everyone happy...
As for the farming code, I rarely ever farm, so I wouldn't know. I've been getting great drops in both modes, but that's from questing with 3 others and heroes, and then getting quest rewards. It seems to me that the code may be in place still, but perhaps to a lesser degree? I don't know, I haven't tested it yet.

1. When the loot scaling origianally hit, many people that where saving up for FoW armor decided that it was now gonna be impossible to get enough ectos & shards and sold them all to the traders
2. People have figured out how to own UW in HM and get lots of ectos.
Maybe even both.

Or maybe some people are like me, and have decided that it might be worth waiting to see what the GWEN armors look like rather than going hardcore after Obsidian.
Or people realize that that they're going to be starting over with regard to armor when GW2 comes out, such that it doesn't seem to make as much sense to worry about whether every character has full fissure armor anymore.

God said "Let ectos cost less" and so they did. And that was good.
Andisa Kalorn
While I think that there are some ecto-specific factors in play, it's more likely that the ecto situation is a reflection of the larger economic situation.
Much more than ectos have decreased in price. Shards, rubies, sapphires, monstrous claws/fangs among the rare crafting materials. And it's not even just rare crafting materials. Superior runes and dyes are also cheaper. I doubt it's all a coincidence.

I don't know why but ever since HM is out Ectos has been dropping on price.
Lucifer PVP
Ectos are going to drop further after the people buying them up now figure out that the value of Ecto drop to 6.5k every night and up to 8k during the day. Any person can see that the demand is just at the supply level once the demand (people hording them) run out of money to purchase ecto from the trader i think we will really see a drop off on ecto prices maybe to 4-5k again or less
