First I would like to say congratulations to the few that were chosen for the design a weapon contest. However, I was wondering if Arenanet could allow a community vote to keep one or more of the honorable mentions that did not win a chance to be amongst the winners. I thought that some of those designs were really impressive and I'm kinda bummed they won't be admitted into the game. First of all, I have no affiliation with the artists who created these weapon concepts, but my favorites that I was bummed to see didn't get in were:

http://www.guildwars.com/events/cont...pon07/hm-j.php
http://www.guildwars.com/events/cont...pon07/hm-n.php
http://www.guildwars.com/events/cont...pon07/hm-p.php

ah well, I guess it's Anet's call though. Anyone agree, or is this a bad idea?

I think it should stay a-net's call for a majority of a voting. But maybe we should get like 25% of the vote.

I do like alot of the winners though

If you read Gaile's post in the DAW Winners Announced thread, you will see that possibly some of the non-finalists might end up in the game sometime, somewhere.

I believe that last time the main winners were included in the new chapter that went retail several months later (Factions) and others that didn't make the final cut showed up in Prophecies at a later date.

Yep. Both of the updates that added new skins to Prophecies and Factions (one added the greens like the Rotwing Recurve and Totem Axe, the other added golds like the Gloom Shield and Lotus Staff) used honorable mention skins, and I believe a couple NF endgame greens were DaW entries as well.

With 1000+ entries, I doubt the majority of the public would look through them all meaning those that got the most votes, would probably those near the top of the list.

I'm actually not too fond of those weapons. I like the ones that won, however, I think the first place one should not have been that.

If the community was filled with graphics and modeling experts then yeah, let us vote.

But since it is not... o.o

Hey, I resemble that remark in the fact that I am a graphics artist

I really like that shield in the first link of the OP. I really hope it makes it in somehow.

You don't get it do you, it's not a contest about who can draw, color, etc the best. It's a contest about who has the best IDEA.

I suppose a thorny flower of unknown variety that somewhat resembles a rose is a wonderful idea for a weapon. Surely, it deserves its place in this, the came called "Guild Wars".

I don't think I'll ever understand those judges..

That one was probably not chosen because it would look like crap when put in the game.

It'd be extremely hard to create that with enough detail to make it look good.

Uh, maybe you can tell me WTF that is supposed to be.

Seriously, many of the designs are NOT that original or creative.

Even though they may say otherwise, I think that the presentation of the concept was the main thing, not creativity.

Congratulations to those who won, though some are of dubious merit.

The thorny flower concept reminds me of PSO. Flower weapons, staffs, scepters, etc is not something new for me.

Offhand focus item of course, besides, as Gaile already said, that one + one other were selected purely because the dev team got an interesting idea about combining them.

Yes, it is a focus, but what the hell is it supposed to look like? A combination between a dragon(?) and an ear of corn?

Ah the good old Rose Wand. PSO had so many pretty yet useless items.

But back to the topic, I don't see how the community could vote, for a start all of the entries would have to be publicily avaiable and, would you honestly look through thousands of pictures?

Not to mention you'd have to take into account the time it would take for them to be avaiable, then the increased time for voting. Personally i'd rather Anet do it and use the "extra" time to get the items in game.

Yea I'm feeling some dissapointment too.

That would've been the best looking warrior shield since the exalted
aegis. A-Net's graphical engine wouldn't be able to support it. They'd
have to dumb-down the graphical detail a lot to make that shield pc-friendly.

I love the detail to pieces...Now where can we find the sword that matches that?

Waste of time. You need ample time for people to vote, and then Anet have to count them all (god knows how long it would take 'them' to do that - no offense). Better off having a faster contest so more time can be spent implementing them into the game... err, as someone already mentioned.

It's funny how no one made daggers - and it's sort of sad that one of those spears looks like a sun-spear...

People need to consider that selecting the winners is probably based on a lot more than just 'Oooh that one is pretty I like it'. When it comes to implementing these designs into the game, things like the level of details able to be rendered and displayed or the feasability of the item in terms of it's interaction with the character model (i.e. that dream-catcher focus in the honorable mentions).

Besides, the community can't come to a reasonable decision about anything. So no, go away.

A lot of the entries are amazing. However:

I'd like to know what the rationale is behind picking the piece that looks like something a 6-year-old drew with colored pencils and/or crayons for "Honorable Mention"

I think it's weak from both a design perspective and from a skill perspective (the person didn't even go to the effort to shade and/or color forms completely, use a straight-edge for lines, etc) - Anyone that has taken a 1301 design class can tell you this piece doesn't belong with the rest.

Whatever though, it's A-net's contest they can do whatever they want. I just think it's an insult to everyone that submitted a quality entry and took this contest seriously.

Meh... the vast majority of the winners this time are absolutely pathetic.

While I certainly don't have the artistic capabilities of quite a few of the people inputting stuff.... I can guarantee that I could definitely come up with far more creative and interesting ideas than most of that nonsense.

But then it does tend to be the artistic limitations that prevent me bothering.... that and my general pessimism as regards certain statistical probabilities.

Then again... on the artistic front.... that crayon thing was truly pathetic both in design and medium. I know five-year-olds who can do better than that. The pegasus thing before it was equally pathetic.

On the whole.... a failure. A total failure.

I really should have at least tried participating... v_v;;

If you're so good, then next time put your money where your mouth is. Remember it's not about the quality of the art, it's the idea. Remember, the winning entry (1st place) was basically just a doodle that said make it look like this, with a neat pattern around the outside that glows and rotates. Till you actually put in an entry and prove that your ideas are better than everyone else, you're just spouting hot air, driving the signal to noise ratio of this thread even lower than it already is.

Personally, I've always wanted the ability to squirt ink when I'm pissed. Note that I have no idea how to make this into a feasible GW object, save for the knit squid hat. Squid hat!!!

Eh, honestly its best that a.net choose the winners. After all, there are limitations to what the engine can handle and it be pretty stupid to let the players pick the winners if the item was too complex to even be put in the game.
