Prestige Titles - Opinions Wanted
TheRaven
Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know which titles you consider to be prestigious. Many of the titles nowadays can be bought or afk'ed. I know legendary survivor used to be respected until so many players started paying runners to get them the title. Now when I see a Legendary Survivor my first thought is "hmm, how much did you pay someone to get that for you?" instead of "Wow! he's a great player!"
So, are there any titles left that make you sit up and take notice? Ones that automatically cause you to respect the title holder rather than thinking "ahh, just another rich kid".
For me, I guess it's the new Guardian and Vanquisher titles. I've been trying to Vanquish areas and it's HARD! I rarely have guildies online to team up with, so I've been forced to hench the areas. It's slow going, especially in the 4-man areas and I don't often see someone wearing a Vanquisher title so to me it's prestigious.
Personally, I'm working on the Elite Skill Hunter. I don't consider it especially prestigious. It's not difficult to get, only time consuming.
How about you?

Besides the very high tiers of the PvP ones, um .... Legendary Vanquisher, and to a lesser extent, Guardian.
Very few titles require notable "skill" - and this is coming from a huge title nut. Most of the rare ones are only notable due to the excessive time requirement, not skill involved.

i think these are the most prestigious...
Legendary Vanquisher
Legendary Guardian
Legendary Cartographer
and Legendary Skill Hunter since i own it
the first two are equally matched... since i think Tasca's Demise and Gate of Pain/Raisu Palace should be equivalent in their category

Personally, I feel that if the person thinks his title is noteworthy, than it is indeed noteworthy. I've been playing the game for 13, 14 months, and my crowning achievement has been to get Kind of a Big Deal. It's a lot more common to see this title nowadays, but I still feel proud of my achievement, so because of that, I view my title with respect.
I personally despise people who call other people noobs because of their armor or title. It's ridiculous.

When Anet finally get their act together and implement the fourth and fifth levels of the KOABD title track this will be a title worth showing.
Been waiting months for this to change.

It's funny... when I see a KoaBD, I wonder what the titles are behind it to get it. If it's drunkard, sweet tooth, etc. then KoaBD means something different to me than if it's made up from Vanquishers, Protectors, Guardians, etc. So I'd say for Prestige, the titles that require you to truly work for as opposed to afk or double-click to get.
Of course, then there's titles like the Wisdom ones... did you earn that or buy unidentified golds from someone? Sadly for the people that actually earned those titles the meaning is devalued by those that buy and cheat their way to achieving them.

Legendary Vanquisher.
After spending nearly 200 hours for it i can say it's the one i respect the most. not just because i have it myself lol, but because after u do it u understand the dedication and the ability to react to situations creating different builds to solve problems and using the enviroment.
grandmaster treasure hunter is another decent one, tho wont ever achieve it

whenever i see the following titles...
rank 9+ hero
legendary vanquisher
rank 6+ gladiator
rank 10+ faction allegiance
i think... "jeez, it must be nice to have tons of free time and absolutely no real-ife responsiblities."
all other titles that dont require money except for protector, i think
"if u like all that grind, youd love wow"
money sink titles i could care less about cause
#1. u either farmed the money for it
#2. power traded the money for it
#3. ebayed the money for it
if you fall under categories 1 & 2, plz refer back to what i think about people who have rank9+ hero, vanquisher etc. titles.
if you ebayed the gold for it, good for u! way to use that brain of yours.

How can the Vanquisher even be compared with the Guardian? For the Guardian, if the whole party dies you have to start all over and you have specific requiremenets to complete (sometimes under a time constraint). The Vanguisher will only kick you to the nearest outpsot when all party members have 60% DP (easy to avoid with CC's) and you have complete control of the battlefield, unlike the restricted environment in missions.
In conclusion, the only prestigious titles should be the Protector and Guardian ones. Vanquisher does not require so much skill but a lot more dedication than the Guardian. Cartographer is stupidly easy to do, all you really need is time. Oh, of course the other pretigious titles would be the ones tied to your PvP-ing; I don't do that part of the game (except the occasional Aspenwood) so I won't comment on that.
Even the Survival title (no matter how you got it), all it really says to me is "That player is good at avoiding combat and using others to do his work for him." It also says that he/she might be the first one to flee if things turn bad, instead of helping his team-mates when they need him/her the most. Where's the pride in that?

Survivor really isn't all that impressive since people began to figure out XP farming techniques... Legendary Defender has always amused me, and I see it as pretty cool. Obviously, Legendary Guardian, Vanquisher, and Cartographers all take a lot of work. Hero and Gladiator titles are also impressive at higher ranks, despite what some may say about getting there easily due to gimmicks.
Lord Natural
Champ title is probably the most prestigious pvp title. Higher level hero, gladiator, and commander titles are also indicative of experience I guess. Faction titles are about as prestigious as sunspear titles.
Because so much of PvE is easy, most titles are just a representation of time spent rather than skill. If there were any to take more seriously than others, it would probably be guardian and vanquisher titles, just because some areas are tough enough to weed out weaker players.

Titles mean nothing anymore, except for the ones that provide some kind of benefit to gameplay, such as Lightbringer or Wisdom. Either you have them or you don't.
In other words, if you have Gladiator maxed I don't care, and if you don't, then I still don't care.
Prestige? ...Please, titles cheapen the very word.

I'd say only the champ titles. You actually have to have some skill to get that. Its not easy to beat a top 100 guild, unless your exploiting bugs or way imba skills. Most other titles can be obtained easily with enough time and/or money invested.
Vanquisher is pretty tough for pve. But that can be obtained with the right cookie cutter builds and enough time.

Champion. That is all.

All pvp titles are worthless.
Champion wasn't for a while, but then bad players whined that they couldnt grind it so anet changed it.
Hero is a measure of how well you can c-space(IWAY), 321Blood/Ranger/Rt spike
Glad is purely about farming. Roll a monk, spend lots of hours in RA, win lots of glad points.
Commander. "Player X rolls 25 on a 100 sided dice". GG
Guardian -> Vanquisher -> Cartographer -> Champion.
All grindable, but all requiring at least some skill at the game.
Oh, and I believe an account with 24 maxed titles was recently e-bayed. Real life cash >> grind >> skill.

My gameplaying has been focused on PVE so PVP titles doesn't do much to me. (But I kinda like the PVP emotes though.)
"Title" is in the eye of the beholder (a variation on the saying). It only matters to the player itself. I have maxed a few titles because I wanted them . Because I finished the game quite a few times already and there was nothing left to do so I thought, and because I "might" be able to unlock stuff in GW2.
(Legendary) Survivor title has got a bad name atm I see judging on what you guys say, but I am pretty proud of mine. When I came to play this game. I saw that you can do get that title and finally I conquered it. So I might as well show it.
But IMO it doesn't really matter what others think. I have fond memories during that journey.
Skill over time makes the title more prestigious seems to be what many think. A title is a title. It only matters to you.

I don't do PvP so those titles don't really mean anything to me. The only PvE titles that I don't respect are the lucky/unlucky ones - where's the hard work/grind in standing in a ring?

I don't value many PvE titles, though Legendary Carto looks nice on my mesmer.
It's just a lot of time and some gold invested in a certain goal, as will be the case with my max skill hunter title (only Elona to go).
The same goes for PvP skills, but those require teamplay, which is a 'skill' I do value.

There's not really a title I respect alot, except for the Vanquisher title, because I've tried and found it extremely difficult. With hench/heroes that is, because my current guild isn't that dedicated to titles.
If I know someone have worked hard for a title, then I respect their effort. If they suddenly go and think they're better than me, because their title is higher, then they deserve "On Cyan's Ignore List".

"None"

The ones I'd say I most admire would be treasure hunter top rank. Vanquisher sure, I could never be bothered with something so time consuming but I admire anyones determination taking on that task.

wow wtf are you on......you got it mixed up.....all pve titles show is that you got time not skills.
pvp is what its all about. there it is skill that is respected not endless Ai bashing. Wow look i can run around and un-lock chests.....OOOOOOO .
Wow look i can run around spend endless hours beating missions that are the same every time.
i hate to tell you this but PVP and PVP titles own anything PvE although PvE can be fun don't even try to compare it to PvP.

If you are talking about time spent then most of the titles show prestige. If you are talking about skill then that's a lot different.
When it comes to skill, only the Guardian and Vanquisher titles show prestige.
The others merely show dedication and ludicrous amounts of time spent. Although I disagree with the OP criticizing titles that can be bought as "less prestigious", because to get 2 million+ gold to get those titles maxed is a lot harder to do than to get most of the non-buyable titles.
Protector - easy as pie to get. No challenge whatsoever in any of the 3 campaigns, other perhaps than bad NPC AI causing unfair failures on occassion.
Legendary Survivor - can be gotten by letting Heroes and Hench do almost everything whilst you are out of aggro range, then doorman'ing once you are at Lut. Or other methods in which you can also remain out of aggro range whilst racking up the XP.
Drunkard & Sweet Tooth, and Lucky & Unlucky - shows you are probably good at solo farming ectos but thats about where the prestige for this ends, albeit that's much more of an accomplishment than say "Protector" is.
Legendary Skill Hunter - easy as pie to get. Only somewhat hard cap in all 3 games is Feast of Corruption and maybe the Sunjiang Construct caps. Other than that, there this is no challenge whatsoever to any of the caps. Although it does take a lot of gold which indicates once again you are good at farming.
Maxed Sunspear and Lightbringer - by far the easiest titles in the game to get, takes no skill whatsoever, you can just flag worms to the enemies and not do a darn thing other than that as the points roll in.
Champion, Hero, Gladiator - likely show your team quite often used the common and effective "cookie cutter" builds made by other people. The higher the rank just means that one has done this more often than someone of lower rank. Albeit ranked players are indeed usually way better than unranked players, but skill level as determined by rank caps out at around Rank 9 or so. Ranks above a certain point do not mean a player is better, just that he grinded out more points.
Defender of Ascalon - takes no skill whatsoever.
Commander - can be rolled. Even if not rolled, the only sure thing it indicates a lot of time spent participating in Hero Battles.
Cartographer - only shows you are good at pixel-hunting. And likely good at knowing how to use Photoshop to help you pixel-hunt since there are no in-game helpers to indicate what areas still need to be further pixel-hunted (ie: it was often suggest to change the zone name to gold if you pixel-hunted it completely and there was no more fog to uncover, but alas this was never implemented hence the best cartographers must resort to Photoshop in it's place).
Allegiance - only shows you are very dedicated to participating in AB or FFF constantly. FFF does take some skill to run properly at top efficiency, however that alone is not enough in and of itself to give Allegiance titles "prestige".
Treasure Hunter & Wisdom - only shows you are good at clicking on treasure chests and likely good at farming ectos and likely good at selling things via trade spamming so that you have money for keys/lockpicks to open more treasure chests.
Gamer - only shows you are good at exploiting every nuance of the map in the exact one perfect way that brings a top score time and time again. This does take some skill to do, however that alone is not enough to give the Gamer title "prestige".

Miss Puddles
i personally think that the maxed titles are most prestigious. even if a few of them are bought/farmed/whatever after a certain point there has to be titles in there that also require a lot of skill and effort.
for example, i currently have 14 maxed titles, giving me "people know me". i don't pvp except when i have a hankering for it, so they are all pve titles (4 cartographer, 4 skill hunter, 2 guardian, 3 protector, and sunspear). not one of those can be bought. yes, some required a nice chunk of change or a huge dedication of time, but i don't consider any of them farmed/bought/afk'd. the only title i'm working on that is purely cost related is sweet tooth.
i put a lot of effort into all of those titles, and PKM is a nice summary of that.
kudos to whoever that was with the 25 titles, btw! hope you get a nice shiny new title when they up the maxed track. makes it seem unfair that i will have the same title soon but have a whole 10 fewer titles than you, huh?

In many cases, a title's beauty is in the eye of the holder. Most of them can be gotten the easy way, or the hard way. Many have different levels of difficulty in ways of gaining the title. Example:
Protector of-----:
Easiest way: pay for Mission Runners
Easy way: Guildies
Not as easy: Heros/Henchmen
Harder: all henchmen
Hardest: PUGs - only because it may take a couple of tries to find a good one.
The only person that knows what method they used to get their title is the one wearing it. But the most impressive PvE titles out there must be the Vanquisher & Guardian titles. The challenge there lies in having a party build that can work well in every situation you face in each area. (stupid Grawl Ulodytes!)

I see bashing on all the other titles for heavenly grind but no one bashes the guardian and vanquisher titles so please allow me to spit on the titles you worked on and put them on the same level as the ones you don't have.
Okz, those two titles pve nuff said. Just kidding but I can use the same arguements you used against the other titles to bring it down: They take a large ammount of time, there's an easy way out. Just guild it with over powered builds or solo builds. Beating Ai's it's nothing special. Shows you got a lot of time to keep agroing only small groups or wiki builds for pve. If your a farmer then this is np np. Heros and henches at your side it's a cake walk compared to soloing. Use teh exploits and teh holiday items!
See now pretty much every title is worth it only to the person who got it. Who cares if you have a title, if you suck then you suck. I'm still going to kick you out of the party.

I think most titles are prestigious in some way. If people have put effort into earning them then that title is worth something - to them and to me if I notice them. And not just those which may require skill; even skill-less titles can show that people still dedicated themselves to attaining it.
But people earn titles in different ways. Regarding Legendary Survivor, for example, some people do actually kill and cap their way to that experience level while fully participating in engagements. That is, not having experience points farmed for them and not letting heroes and henchmen do everything for you. That said, it's impossible to distinguish between more and less skilled ways of earning a title.
I respect medium-to-high PvP ranks and certain PvE ones. Vanquishing titles, as others have said, KoaBD and the subsequent ranks of that title track, and others. Especially those people who successfully vanquished Poisoned Outcrops. I found that very difficult.

Titles only show that a person has spent alot of time working on titles.
I have a bunch of titles that I got because I had nothing else to do. And really, they're all just about time. Some titles take more time than others. Some can be bought (which either means you spent time getting money, or ebayed).
I don't think that a title showing that you've played a game for enough time to get that title is prestigious at all. It's not "hard work" to play a game all day long... if anything it says the opposite.

Most titles are worthless, they give you a few words under your name, and probably a holiday hat type thing when GW 2 comes around. The titles that I care about? Lightbringer, Sunspear, and to a lesser extent, Kurzick/Luxon. These titles are the only ones that really add much benefit.
Hard Mode titles, they are somewhat challenging, but not much. Every now and then I will just go vanquish a place for a laugh.
PvP titles, look up build on the wiki, unlock the skills, grind for a month, then repeat when your overpowered build gets nerfed.
I don't look at people with fancy titles and armor and think, wow they own. I blame my friend though, 2 weeks after he bought Prophecies, he had Protector title and 100% explored. The only help he needed was dunes bonus and finding a little piece of his map.
I do have one maxed title, I got protector of tyria on my assassin, took me 11 hours, which included running myself to most of the missions, and doing all of the bonuses.

Anybody with a gladiator title gets +respect from me. Most of the other titles I question how much time people have on their hands.
I like titles that show skill. So basically that means commander or gladiator. Hall of Heroes doesn't cut it for me.

Commander, I know there was a lot of /roll'ing, but don't know if that's how it is anymore.

You just described a team with hardly any damage and getting lucky 10 times in a row which you then must be lucky enough to do 25 times for a title sounds like you've got to be pretty lucky.
But I assume titles are just for people who like grind. I mean I'd grind for LvL in gw2 just for looking cool with a high lvl. Like lv 100 or lv 999 even if it did'nt do much. But a cool aura or effect for high lvs would be nice.

I really don't get why people care so much if people pay for titles or whatever. I think they showed a lot of determination to get said title because chances are, they shelled out a lot of money. Who cares if someone is rich and "buys" their title. They all take time and patience. I don't feel that my wisdom title is cheapen by the fact that someone may have bought theirs. Getting the gold to get that title is very tough, assuming they didn't eBay it or something.
I just don't really think any titles have been cheapened by anything.

A.) Leave yourself, which you lose your win streak.
or
B.) Wait for 2 hours, and both teams lose.
I have had this happen many times. People are even asses about it. "Come on, we have won 9 already, just leave please because you have no damage anyway."..."Stfu noob"

Seriously dude - if you try to belittle other players opinions by adding universal truths - the least thing you can try to do is try to make sure that the universal truth isn't in contradiction with itself!
PvP titles are more interesting in PvP then PvE titles - BUT PvE titles are more interesting in PvE then PvP titles (except for the zoo-emote BECAUSE of the special effect!).
The titles that raise my interest today are high tiers or Lucky/Unlucky.
Why?
Because I love that title.
Does it say anything about the player behind it?
Nope - it just looks pretty!

None, they're all just a sign of too much time investment and I'd be careful to give them too much of a meaning because nobody will remember you for it and only weak personalities (MMOs seem to be full of them) will admire you.

All titles are "how much time will I spend farming X"
PvP titles are farmed by PUGs all day long. PvE titles are farmed by people all day long. They're all just time and/or gold sinks.

Not to say that this is commonplace by any standards, but it has happened.. goes to show that you should never place any judgement just from seeing a title.

pve titles should be respected just as much as pvp imo, all this elitist crap does my head in.
in short AI > pvp noobs, and trust me, there are plenty of them to farm glad pts off etc.

I do have 4 maxed titles (3 protector and LB8 @ 90K points because of DoA), but honestly, I think a player is most prestigious when he shows off the kind of pet he has (although this too can easily be bought these days)
