Assign gift drops to characters instead of making it a nasty free-for-all?
genofreek
Apologies if this has been addressed and please close the thread if it was. I ran searches for "gift", "present", "festival" etc and explored a few current event threads, but I haven't seen it suggested.
So... last Wintersday festival, after the hats were given out, presents dropped in the hub cities and were assigned to players, just like item drops anywhere outside outposts. People were able to pick up their own gifts and eventually scrape up the ones left behind by absent players.
In today's event, the presents were dropped and free for anyone who could get to them first. People were camping known spawn points and screaming and swearing at sugar rushing snipers. My best friend and I had some fun picking up gifts in the morning, but by afternoon everyone was awake and online, and it was an ugly sight. We both gave up and logged off, because people were getting so territorial and angry over internet gifts that it simply wasn't fun anymore. The whole holiday mood was just over.
I'd like to point out that I'm not trying to be whiny about the gifts themselves -- I was up early and got plenty of presents, and I'm not the type to make long sobby posts over missing out on a handful of rice cakes -- but the atmosphere was less of "Yay, there's another present for me!" and more like "THAT WAS MINE YOU [censored]ING [censored] I'M GONNA [cencored] YOUR MOM!!1"
It wasn't like this on Wintersday. At least, nowhere near this extent. Is there a practical reason why we can't assign event gift drops?
ETA: Didn't wanna clutter up my own thread with posts. Just wanted to point out that there's still a free-for-all at the end, when the AFK players' gifts become open for all. It just sucks when the whole event's run that way.

I returned lots of charges and got nothing for it as people with better Ping were all stood on the spawn points
Also when people are all yelling "YOU GREEDY ^$^%$ LET SOMEONE ELSE GET SOME &%&% PRESSENTS" it does definatly ruin the happy party event atmoshpere

I don't mind "useful" rewards such as cash, I don't mind "randomly" distributed rewards such as gifts being dropped on the ground, but mixing the two gets a bit iffy. Personally I didn't mind - it's free stuff either way - but it's a shame that so many people can't be mature about it.
If it was up to me, I'd make the gifts drop only stuff like firecrackers and champagne, while giving each player one set of whatever worthwhile stuff you want to give out like pets or cash and whatnot.

Because stealing people's gifts while moving 50% faster is fun,
Oh and the people raging, that adds to the fun :P.

The drops do need to be individually assigned as before, especially considering the recent ridiculous lag issues. It is a simple and fair system.

Simply put, DEAL WITH IT. Get the boost, or deal with it. Call me harsh or W/E but, these pressies are nothing compared to the X-Mas ones. I mean COME ON! the best your getting is 1k, compared to CC's and what not.
Wile it is a shame to see some people handle it in such an immature fasion, take solice in the fact that they are that pissed over a virtual prize that is, well, worthless.

yeah when the gifts started dropping everybody entered horde mode and just started getting angry..

How are people supposed to JUST DEAL WITH lag? It can't be fun for the people overseas and those with poor connections/older computers. Plus, with all those people in every district, most of us slowed some. Even with the boost, if you're getting two frames a minute you're not getting diddly.

Well, tis a shame, but I dont see that as a good basis for argument, A-Net wont change it around just because some people dont have a solid connection.
(BTW, hang out in the ID districts, you will go from a red dot to an orange, or perhaps the fabled green dot.)

The free-for-all present game is the best thing in any of the events. What else are in-town speed boosts for if not for madly dashing about racing others to the spawn.

Reason why anet probably did this was because during the last Christmas event there were at least 900 presents laying around because people left there characters in the district for a hat. Leaving presents after a while these presents stack up. I got 120 presents on a crappy run in Kamadan on Christmas making them free for all got rid of the lag the stupid afk people would have caused leaving hundreds of presents on the ground.
Im on dsl and I don't lag a bit my video card is not up to date with the new ones and I have 512 ram and I have 120-150 ms ping usually lag for me is 1500 ms ping. Why don't you try -image and -nosound. Or just clean your computer of all your porn.

There is something you guys are probably not seeing.
With assigned presents and the rain of present lasting for lets say 10 minutes and a present dropping every 30 seconds for each person you would get 20 presents.
Now with unassigned and the rain of present going on for 10 minutes and a present dropping every 30 seconds for each spawn point ,there is really no way to say how many more presents you could pick up.
I only participated in one of the visits and only picked up prices at one of th ose visits ,however because my district was medium to highly populated the place where i was standing had 7 present spawn points near it, so you can see where im going with this, at thats 30 second that presents spawn i could pick up 7 presents.
If i was really present crazy and had picked up all 7 presents each time i would have gotten 140 presents .
PS : I wasn't that crazy about the presents and every now and then someone would run past and pick up one of the presents on their way,not realizing that was a nice spot , I gave half the contents of my present to guildie.

That event brought out the worst in everyone.
Territorial people staked out their claim and yelled at anyone who came near.
Predatorial people had a field day grabbing presents out from underneath unsuspecting people who weren't quick enough with their mouse.
I'm all for random chance events, but when someone you just saw grab a present out from under your feet 5 minutes ago is saying in chat they have 86 presents, while you only have ...1... is just a tad annoying. I liked the way they did it for Wintersday. You could just stand in the central area, look around OH! NEAT! MY NAME! run over and grab it and get excited at your new possession. In Shing Jea I think it just made everyone, but a few, miserable.
And after attending seven or so of those events, I'm pretty sure they dropped where people were, not only at spawn points. I saw a lot of people running past leaving presents in their wake, and a lot of people standing still with a bunch of presents spawning at their feet. Though I did also notice fixed spawn ponts, so i think it worked both ways.
Personally, I'm hoping that it was just a left over from the old code they forgot/choose not to/ didn't change becuase they were busy making GW:EN and GW2 better.
***edit***
On Wintersday when the presents dropped for the AFK people, the assignment cleared after 20 minutes or so just like with normal loot, and people happily stayed around to pick them up. The only time I saw hundreds of presents just sitting anywhere were those 2 inaccsesable ledges in Kamadan, but Gaile and one of her cohorts collected them and gave them away as donations after the festivities.

I think the whole event was just a quick copy of last year, its evident they learnt from the previous ones and improved for wintersday.

First final i ran round getting charges then ran round trying to get a gift for it
After that i just waited through the charges part letting everyone else do that work then pressed "Space Bar" over and over on a known spawn point
I made 9k from presents, so at 1k chance being 5% i must of got around 450 presents overall
While i made alot of profit from these 1k rewards and selling the wine i would prefer if the next festival the gifts are assigned
Having them unassigned didn't make people want to chat as tey had to get it the second it spawned and made lots of people yell abuse at you for getting more than them
Is that what you wanted from the final, Anet
To see how offencive some players could be?
On a side note i saw an incriddible usage of the n-word over this weekend specially in the final, Anet i really think you want to try assigning presents in the future or we can expect more abuse every festival?
Festivals keep me playing they are well spaced and a break from the normal grind that is titles (i'm talking about attending the actually festival not AFK'ing 9 rings)
That being said i have only played for 7 months and seen 3 festivals (Wintersday, Canthan New Year and the Dragon Festival) and while i think the Wintersday was most fun, followed by New Year and Dragon lagging way behind i am wondering if my guild mates don't like festivals as much as me simply because they have seen more of them and are tired of the abuse
(not to mention the "wur cn i gt da hat" people that spam the festival towns)

We dont all have time to stand around for 20 minutes waiting for them to "un-assign" Once they do it becomes a even larger swarm of people scrambling over them than there was during unassigned pressies dropping making people with lag even less likely to pick those up.
Getting pressies was super easy even with lag, all u had to do was find a quiet spot and just pick up the ones that spawn by u. (all pressies spawn within a Radious of any player or NPC in the town) There was plenty of quiet spots around the place, rather than trying to compete for lots and losing them all due to lag all its simpler to just move away and gain the ones spawned for u.

Also, I'm not sure what sort of lag others get (I haven't played too much lately and missed the nasty spikes people were talking about), but mine generally doesn't last 20 or even 10 minutes. Even the nastiest laggers on 56k should be able to get to and pick up their presents in time if they're assigned.
And trust me, plenty of people spend all day and attend every drop, so like Operative 14 said, the presents never stack up unless they land somewhere inaccessible. Someone's always there to pick one up as soon as the assignment clears.

Unassigned gifts was only bad if people were lagging, since obviously they wouldn't be getting much. If lag wasn't an issue, it isn't hard to get gifts. Sugar Rush + Sugar Jolt + ; + Space = Best Friend.
I was one of the fortunate ones who didn't have any lag at all this weekend, but I do see where most of the complainers are coming from. If I was getting gipped from lag too I would be here complaining as well.

Yesterday i moved to a less populated spot (since presents drop by your feet anyway) and i didn't move much. And everytime i didn't move much there came some nitwit who thought i was afk so they could steal the present. And they all quickly ran to another "afk'er" everytime i moved even a little bit so they could see that i wasn't afk....
It's a festival so everyone deserves the same reward. And don't say that presents aren't worth something, because there is still a small chance you will get 1K which can be a lot of money for some starters (And also for people who like to have a good arsenal of skills, so they can play a bit with their builds :P)

Or like the new year where they appeared in inventory
New Year was amazing with the huge conga of characters following the Celesial Pig, to me that was the meaning of a festival. Everyone staying after they got their reward and just having a laugh, following the pig did nothing more than just be fun to see, there was no bonus in staying but people did
Sadly this year didn't feel like that
Whatever you took out of the magic formula that made New Year so great please bring it back for the next festival

I most admit I joined the sugar rush on presents after a disappointing first round, but this is not really a fair way to do it. Let the presents appear in your inventory or as assigned drops is much more fair.

While i got more than my share i still would like them to be assigned as there is more to the event than just how many gifts I got. The atmosphere for one. I'm sorry you can't see past your own profits

Wow, no need to get testy. While I agree with you that it should be fun for everyone and not just sugar rushers raping autoselect, I don't think Mithran meant it that way.
Just about everyone on 9 Rings goes AFK anyway, so it's far less drama.

No. I mant that is not 'hard' to get the gifts.
People fail to get them because they are greedy.
If you don't move and stay in one spot, a gift will appear sooner or later near you.
If you run around triying to get them all, people that are already near them will pick them.
I picked so many of them because I forgot about the ones that were far away, letting other pick them, and focusesd in one small area.
Everyone can get sugar items, everyone can run around, everyone can pik them.
What would happend with the unclaimed gifts? Dissapear? Become unclaimed?
Ah... then, once the owner leaves, it would become unclaimed and be te same again.
And where would your gifts appear? By you? Everywhere in the outpost?
Nah. The currnt system is as fine as can be.

Unassigned presents only lead to bad blood and ruin the festival spirit. Especially in an event like this where we've just had had the sugar rush grab fest with the celestial charges for victory tokens.

I go to the events to have fun and socialize. The gifts and hats are nice, but not necessary. If it's gonna put everyone in a foul mood, what's the point of having a party? On Wintersday, people cheered and modeled their hats and talked excitedly about seeing their presents. Some people even gave away Elf Tonics so we'd eventually form a Riverdancing line surrounded by gifts. It was fun. The last festival was a dead, silent, ugly heat punctuated by the foul language of people who'd been sniped.
If a player leaves/goes AFK and doesn't get their gifts, then yes, let someone else gets them. I have no issues with an free-for-all once everyone's gotten a decent share. But when people are present and ready to receive items and get nothing, there's a problem. I'd even suggest putting the gifts right in the inventory, but then that takes out the fun of seeing presents with your name on them fall from above.
Your gifts, as on Wintersday, would land somewhere near you. If you move, your area of drops moves too.
