after GW:EN comes out we will have GW2, an entire new game featuring a fully persistent world, no subscription fee, and a much improved game overall. we all know that when a new chapter comes out, thats where all the crowds go. and after GW2 we are bound to have more chapters and expansions. is anyone else afraid of the original GW games losing their population? i know i for one have so much to do with all my characters with all the campaigns plus GW:EN that ill be busy for years to come with this game. but im a little worried about losing the huge fanbase we have to the new GW2. anybody share this concern?

I'm kinda worried, but more in a hypothetical fashion. GW2 is still so far away that I'm not going to let it influence me for a very long time to come.
And yeah, like you, I have so much to do still that I don't really plan on buying GW2 (nor GW:EN for that matter) until I can at least envision myself reaching a point where I might possible start to consider the remote chance of running out of things to see and do.

That's ArenaNet's curse, really - they made a game that appealed to the casual gamer, and we (or I at least) am going to casually enjoy it for years to come still, with no pressing need for anything more. I suspect that long after GW2's release there'll still be enough of us that the world will never seem too empty.

Guild Wars 2 is 2-3 years away. That is A LONG TIME.

I think the 2 years will kill Guild Wars rather than GW2 itself.

I don't think GW will be able to get that many new players as soon as GW2 arrives. It will probably dwindle with time and fade away.

As for old players such as myself that went through all 3 Campaigns plus the upcoming expansion, I'm sure I'll come back once in a while. Maybe even to get some more titles that'll get small benefits for my new characters in GW2.

Maybe they could expand the idea of crossovers between versions but that's pretty much a longshot...

That's what I think. By about a year after GWEN, it will start fading, by GW2 it'll be much smaller, since everybody else will be playing GW2. But, that's the point. GW2 is the next step, and that's what consumers will be going for. Why would they want to play an older version when the new one is out?

Eh, 2 years from now is a very long time. Most people will stop playing GW to play another game (like Starcraft 2 for instance).

But some people will still play GW, especially those who's older computers can't run GW2 (it will probablly have higher specs and require a better machine).

That's awfully generous.

I give GW:EN a maximum of two months before players become bored with it. (which is double what I've experienced in Nightfall, so that's my blind optimism talking) While that is my opinion, how often can you replay the same dungeons, really?

However, if ArenaNet did indeed lie and the Reputation Grind is severe...I'm not sure what to expect. I would expect players to quit out of anger of grind, so the question would be moot.

Unlike some companies, ANet claims that they will continue to keep GW's servers up and run events as long as people still play it.

Likely GW will still be played by people with horrible computers, as well as some people who will hate GW2. It will also be played once in a while by us when we seek its charm.

I think GW won't die out completely, though the eye of ArenaNet and the majority of us will move to GW2.

GW2 will essentially be superior to GW1. The only real reasons to continue playing would be for things that GW2 did NOT keep, such as the instances.

I agree that Anet is doing a perfectly good job of killing GW on their own, but I sure hope GW2 kills whatever remains, because the current game is so broken, so many broken promises, that these huge inadequacies *MUST* have been taken into account as Anet builds GW2........they must......right? right???

I've beaten each campaign with all my characters except for 2 and I'm sure a lot of people have done the same too but for the past few weeks I've been really bored with GW but when GW:EN comes out it will keep me busy for awhile but the wait for GW2 is a LONG time so hopefully GW:EN keeps my interest for the time being.

no.

itll be dead way before gw2, and from a combination of gwen and the online store.

There is only so many things we can do to keep busy in GW1 as it is now. Anet will need to bring some kind of update inbetween the release of GW:EN and GW2 to keep people interested.

I think the best possible scenario is to have Guild Wars 2 here sooner than expected. So if that means just an update inbetween that time then I wouldn't mind that at all. All speculation ofcourse but I am just excited that GW:EN is almost here !

It all depends how guildwars 2 is. I'm somewhat skeptical. The idea of races is cool, as long as one isnt better at a certain profession as another then im cool. But when you start adding diferences like that, who knows what else gets added and the balance thrown to wack.

But its 2 years away so I really am not worried at all.

Indeed, it will be very hard for a game that probably wont be released until 2009 to kill something that is arguably already very dead.

Guild Wars will be alive and kicking long after Guild Wars 2 is released. That is, as long as ArenaNet continues to support it.

PvP makes sure Guild Wars will stay alive. The fact that you get exclusive things in Guild Wars 2 by playing the original Guild Wars (and getting titles and stuff) will make sure Guild Wars will stay alive even after Guild Wars 2 is released. I'm not sure what it is that you people find so difficult to understand. You can't kill a corpse? Looool.
