will GW2 kill GW?
chesterocks7
after GW:EN comes out we will have GW2, an entire new game featuring a fully persistent world, no subscription fee, and a much improved game overall. we all know that when a new chapter comes out, thats where all the crowds go. and after GW2 we are bound to have more chapters and expansions. is anyone else afraid of the original GW games losing their population? i know i for one have so much to do with all my characters with all the campaigns plus GW:EN that ill be busy for years to come with this game. but im a little worried about losing the huge fanbase we have to the new GW2. anybody share this concern?
Yandawar
I'm kinda worried, but more in a hypothetical fashion. GW2 is still so far away that I'm not going to let it influence me for a very long time to come.
And yeah, like you, I have so much to do still that I don't really plan on buying GW2 (nor GW:EN for that matter) until I can at least envision myself reaching a point where I might possible start to consider the remote chance of running out of things to see and do.
That's ArenaNet's curse, really - they made a game that appealed to the casual gamer, and we (or I at least) am going to casually enjoy it for years to come still, with no pressing need for anything more. I suspect that long after GW2's release there'll still be enough of us that the world will never seem too empty.

Guild Wars 2 is 2-3 years away. That is A LONG TIME.
Bryant Again
I think the 2 years will kill Guild Wars rather than GW2 itself.

I don't think GW will be able to get that many new players as soon as GW2 arrives. It will probably dwindle with time and fade away.
As for old players such as myself that went through all 3 Campaigns plus the upcoming expansion, I'm sure I'll come back once in a while. Maybe even to get some more titles that'll get small benefits for my new characters in GW2.
Maybe they could expand the idea of crossovers between versions but that's pretty much a longshot...

Eh, 2 years from now is a very long time. Most people will stop playing GW to play another game (like Starcraft 2 for instance).
But some people will still play GW, especially those who's older computers can't run GW2 (it will probablly have higher specs and require a better machine).

A.Net will kill Guild Wars before next year.

I give GW:EN a maximum of two months before players become bored with it. (which is double what I've experienced in Nightfall, so that's my blind optimism talking) While that is my opinion, how often can you replay the same dungeons, really?
However, if ArenaNet did indeed lie and the Reputation Grind is severe...I'm not sure what to expect. I would expect players to quit out of anger of grind, so the question would be moot.
Eldin
Unlike some companies, ANet claims that they will continue to keep GW's servers up and run events as long as people still play it.
Likely GW will still be played by people with horrible computers, as well as some people who will hate GW2. It will also be played once in a while by us when we seek its charm.
I think GW won't die out completely, though the eye of ArenaNet and the majority of us will move to GW2.
GW2 will essentially be superior to GW1. The only real reasons to continue playing would be for things that GW2 did NOT keep, such as the instances.

I agree that Anet is doing a perfectly good job of killing GW on their own, but I sure hope GW2 kills whatever remains, because the current game is so broken, so many broken promises, that these huge inadequacies *MUST* have been taken into account as Anet builds GW2........they must......right? right???
HKSdivision
I've beaten each campaign with all my characters except for 2 and I'm sure a lot of people have done the same too but for the past few weeks I've been really bored with GW but when GW:EN comes out it will keep me busy for awhile but the wait for GW2 is a LONG time so hopefully GW:EN keeps my interest for the time being.

2 years is a long time.....thats why I dont think GW:EN is the last installment (just my opinion)

You can't kill a corpse.
Chop it Off
will gw2 kill gw?
no.
itll be dead way before gw2, and from a combination of gwen and the online store.
no.

There is only so many things we can do to keep busy in GW1 as it is now. Anet will need to bring some kind of update inbetween the release of GW:EN and GW2 to keep people interested.
I think the best possible scenario is to have Guild Wars 2 here sooner than expected. So if that means just an update inbetween that time then I wouldn't mind that at all. All speculation ofcourse but I am just excited that GW:EN is almost here !

It all depends how guildwars 2 is. I'm somewhat skeptical. The idea of races is cool, as long as one isnt better at a certain profession as another then im cool. But when you start adding diferences like that, who knows what else gets added and the balance thrown to wack.
But its 2 years away so I really am not worried at all.

Guild Wars will be alive and kicking long after Guild Wars 2 is released. That is, as long as ArenaNet continues to support it.
PvP makes sure Guild Wars will stay alive. The fact that you get exclusive things in Guild Wars 2 by playing the original Guild Wars (and getting titles and stuff) will make sure Guild Wars will stay alive even after Guild Wars 2 is released. I'm not sure what it is that you people find so difficult to understand. You can't kill a corpse? Looool.

If you read between the lines, one might conclude Arenanet is saying: "it's all up to the playerbase".
If a significant community remains in GW1, they might decide it's profitable to continue both product lines: GW1 series (for instance-purists) and GW2 series (for persistance-lovers).

God I hope so... I hope GW2 kills GW completely, then SC2 kills GW2, then Anet goes bankrupts and their office gets converted into a Mcdonald's.

Will Guild Wars 2 make the original game a lot less played? Yes. Will it 'kill' the game? No.

So much pessimism in such a small time-frame. Makes me smile.
You knwo what would be the funniest thing that could "theorically" happen?
GW original actually manage to kill GW2. Hightly improbable but not that crazy. If GW2 turns out to be closser to others MMOs that the GW2-players either leave or go back to GW1...
Inside the realm of possibilities, but then again the nutriments in my body could provoque an atomic explosion that would ravage the world...

You don't pay for anything other than the client and maybe a character slot here and there, so go play WoW or something if you want great pve and support.
Horuku
PvE in GW is horrible, so as long as it's semi-decent in GW2, then yes. If they keep the same PvP it will kill it as well. RA, TA, HA, GvG etc. are all innovative and > than WoW.
tsaiwes99
Guild Wars 2 will be taking me away from GW for sure. GW is getting so frustrating to play
GodofAcid
Of course GW2 will make GW obsolete.. it's human nature for everyone to migrate to the new and better GW. It'll probably have a better trade system, new and exciting things that the original can't compete with, and hopefully alot of improvements on the chronic problems of the original. Anyone who says people will continue to play the original.. well, let's see where people stand 6 months after GW2 is released.
Redfeather1975
I'm not so sure GW2 will kill GW.
Everquest 2 didn't kill Everquest. A lot of people still play EQ.

I simply love these DOOM threads. I highly doubt Guild Wars is going to be killed by GW2 ...... Some people will move on for sure and some will come back to unlock things they havn't yet to make their playing in GW2 better or to attain something they want. With both of these games connected what do you think ? Come on people !!!
Hmm.... The earth is warming up do you think 2 to 3 years from now we'll be living under a sheet of ice ? That would really ruin my internet connection.

Well, you know what people say: Hope dies last. So people still pay their subscription fees? GW doesn´t have fees that pay for the servers. And I doubt we will see much new content to buy after GW2 is released. At that point GW1 will most likely only cost ANet. |
Trvth Jvstice
When GW2 is released, I would expect that GW will no longer be released in stores. If someone wants to purchase the original GW they will probably have to buy it online. At that point, I would imagine that the vast majority of GW players will be veteran players. Anet would be silly to continue advertising and distributing the original GW after GW2 release. Sorry, but I have to compare this to Runescape classic and the modern Runescape. The only Runescape classic players out there are the old veteran players.
(Yes I know it's a cardinal sin to invoke Runescape in these forum, but I couldn't think of a better comparison.)

For me it all depends on how much persistence there actually is. I got into this game because of instancing. If I can't play without being bothered by people, having my kills stolen, or generally having my game disrupted by idiots, I'll stick with GW1 indefinitely.
