In Game Racism and Anti-Semetic Discrimination

Ok, here's what happened to me tonight. I was in AB at the Grenz map (kurzick) international district when this person advertises GLF 1 more. So, I hit the join button and he accepts me. He then asks me... "Are you a jew or a nig**r". I'm like dumbfounded so I don't even respond, I just leave the party.

I join another party, and then he starts in local chat.. "You were a jew/nig**r, no wonder you left... lol ".

Of course I had to call him an asshole. But then, he starts advertising again in local chat... "GLF 1 non jew/nig**r".

Now, I know that submitting a report to Anet will probably be a waste of time. They always seem to just tell you to turn on chat filter blah, blah, blah. But this really went way too far as to what they should tolerate for in game behavior.

Am I just too thinned skinned too ignore this? Or, is this something that totally needs to be addressed and not tolerated. Does anyone else have any other experience in game with racism or anti-semetism?

You're right to report this one. That's just plain nasty and should not be tolerated, i think Anet will agree with you.

The childish pre-teen sex talk in Shing Jea i can ignore after stating a protest at the inappropriate nature of the discussion, but this sort of crap shouldn't go unpunished.

Probably the guy thought he was funny or something by saying that, which is sad. Yes it needs to be addressed because its still racism...online or not. Its just amusing how people say it online...but of course they would never say it offline because they would get their arses beat. I remember one time when I was in Sardalec Sanitarium, there was a black skinned elementalist near one of the spawn areas, not even doing anything and this random guy just keeps calling him a nig**r, over and over and kept telling him to leave. I reported him but I don't know if anything happened or not, since I kept him on my ignore list since.

I still think Jew would come up even if filter was on.Im not either of these and not that it matters but why the hell do peeps bring their upbringing into the pulbic eye.I hope Anet baned his ass 3 ways to sunday and if not then thats bs.

I would keep his name and keep it on your mates list to see if Anet do somthing about it and let us know plz what happens.

in WoW that guy would have been banned for 3-7 days or even more as punishment. i put in a ticket once when a guy said something really degrading about ppl living in 3rd world countries. Got a reply immediately from the GM and that guy was not seen in-game for the next few days. Justice was served.

He has every right to party with who he wants. It was immature of him to announce this in all chat however.

I personally find it funny, and in no way offensive. I hope you understand that one, he could be jewish or a black person himself, or two somehow harmed by persons of that culture, or lastly just a jerk off, either way, given the double standard in this country, those words are a matter of interpritation. What I mean is, if he was non jewish or white, then it's racism, but if he is jewish or of african decent, then he is just being a a--hole at worst, or immature at best.

So if he was either of the above types of people, then why did he say you must be because you left and then advertised with the exception of these types of persons.Could you tell me what your reaction would be if you were victim to a 9/11 joke? would it be funny?
People should have the choice to come home from work/school and leave their troubles at the door and not bring it into a game like this.

There are lots of racists in GW. Back during PVE preview for NF there was a thread on this site with screenshots of dark-skinned chars in the cage in Lion's Arch and then people bidding on them. As well as making racist names using old-school English from the 1800's.

Once I had a guy to run my zero deaths character from HZH to Lut, and he failed twice on that run (LOL). Then I left the party to hire a competent runner who could do the job, at which point the original runner called me those same bad words as listed in the OP.

I was there in AD1 grenz when this im guessing same person was there and also carrying on about this crap.

Im not black or jewish, im kinda as white and as blonde as they come but this sorta behavior and language makes me cringe. Even if its not directed at me I report it, im guessing the guy I saw last night was the guy you have written about.

Here's how it works:

If you report someone for garbage like that, A-Net may or may not take action against the loser. (You don't know that they won't)

If you don't report someone for garbage like that, A-Net will NOT take action against the loser.

But I think he was clearly trying to be antagonistic and difficult. He wanted to get under the OP's skin. And he did it. I would've had the same reaction as the OP, though. This guy sounds like a loser. I don't think he was trying to be funny, he was just trying to be annoying. If he was black/Jewish, he's still just as worthy of punishment for harassing another player. I don't think it has as much to do with racism, at least it wouldn't for me, as it has to do with people harassing others and putting them down. He could've called me a million names just as offensive, that had nothing to do with race or faith, and I would've been equally annoyed.

blatant racism deserves punishment. I don't care if it's cute or funny to them...it's completely uncalled for and happens entirely too often in this game.

This had nothing to do with the guy joining his group...it was his comments plain and simple...the guy thought he was being cute or funny by using racial/religious slurs (ok jew is not a religious slur usually...but in this context it is)...and the guy was offended when he joined the group and chose not to group with him solely because of that.

Should someone be able to join a group without being offended by the comments presented in group chat? Absolutely...and it's already covered in the conduct part of the terms of service...under the harassment policy.

doesn't matter what race or religion he is...his words were intended to offend...too many people in this game say crap like that with the sole intention of getting a rise out of someone...and they absolutely deserve to get banned for it. A Week minimum...personally...they'd lose their account if I was in charge...
