Did GW ruin all other rpg's for you too?

Not really, I don't play any console RPGs anymore, but I still love playing my GBA and DS RPGs (FE, FF, Pokemon, etc) And I have a strong Urge to buy Elder Scoll games (Regerts no reinstalling Morrowind)

Guild Wars doesn't invlolve you like most other RPG's.
Some of my fave's are: The KOTOR series and a little GBA series called Golden Sun. Golden Sun 1&2 are hands down best RPG's I've ever played.

The combat system in guild wars is awesome. The storyline is sub-par. Shame final fantasy XII is light on the storyline (compared to ff-x and ff-x 2, my all time favorites).
Wet_Flannel
I think personally that GW should not be compared next to classic RPGs such as Final Fintasy series and the likes of Kotor....
Firstly because i beleive you dont play it for the storyline and definatly not the character building (as when you hit lev 20 thats it >.< )
I play guild wars because i am forced to party with other people, whether it be my close frieends in the guild, or complete stranger PUGs
it didnt ruin other rpgs, because imo they are completely different......

It's completely apples and oranges. GW isn't really much of an RPG. It's a hack n slash fest that walks you through some sort of story where you're the 2,717th person to complete the quest today.
GW lacks depth and interaction with the environment. You kill things in the environment, but nothing else really.

The thing about GW (and most MMORPGs) is that they really don't involve you. The world gets saved whether you play it or not, and it's already been saved in the same exact way dozens of times that day by the time you wake up in the morning. There's nothing you can do to impact the environment.

Never had this problem myself.
GW isn't much of an RPG anyway, in terms of actual "role-playing". No, I'm not talking about saying "thee" and "forsooth" in chat -- that's silliness. For me, *ROLE-PLAYING* is the ability to define an interesting character that can be treated as an alternative persona -- and as such, GW never was much of an RPG and it continues to be less of one with each update. GW is Diablo II on steroids.
And there's nothing wrong with that! Maybe you're not looking for something with depth, so GW gives you what you need. On the other hand, you might consider expanding your horizons...
I play Oblivion, Gothic, even old Might & Magic games sometimes... and for online games, I spend most of my RPG time in WoW and LOTRO. When one game gets frustrating or boring, I move to a different one. For example, I got frustrated in LOTRO, so I played some GW AB this weekend and *finally* got the Luxon Supporter title. Yesterday, I pumped a level on my Dwarf Hunter in WoW. Today, I'll try to get my languishing Mesmer through Unwaking Waters.
The idea is to have *fun*. I suspect even our venerable Gaile plays other games...

I play GW since may 2005 and this is the first & only online game I ever played. I am quite satisfied, simply cause since this date I only bought Oblivion that I uninstalled after capping Azura sword and closing six Oblivion gates.....Morrowind is far away the best rpg I played....for at least two years. Deus Ex is another one, which has not been mentioned...try it, its an old one but very immersive and awesome. KOTOR is good too, Fable also...
So I must thank Anet cause I save my money playing GW

The only RPG I'm waiting for now, is Fallout 3... But I have my doubts if Bethesda was the one to make it right. Im afraid it might turn into Oblivion with guns, and that would be totally unlike Fallout

Hey ChaoticCoyote, what server on LOTR Online?
Dr Strangelove
Most of the new stuff tends to be pretty crappy, IMO, lots of Diablo 2 clones.
Guild Wars has me hooked on the lack of grinding. Grind completely killed EVE and WoW for me, why should I have to do boring stuff for a couple months until the game is fun? Screw that.
A lot of the old single player RPGs still hold up very well, though
Baldur's gate 2, the fallout series, planescape, are absolutely awesome, anyone who hasn't played them needs to buy them. Now.
I used to like diablo 2, final fantasy, and all that, but I went back to them a bit ago and... meh. Kinda easy, kinda grindy.
I hated morrowind and loved oblivion (screams as the angry mob tears him to pieces) morrowind was never challenging, not even a little bit. There's only so many times you can move along the map at a snail's pace beating the crap out of cliff racers.
For MMOs, Guild Wars really is the best thing out there right now, though I'm kinda interested in Ncsoft's Tabula Rasa, looks pretty good.

Traditional RPGs, no. Guildwars has not in any way effected my enjoyment of tabletop D&D or Final Fantasy(the single player console entries in the series) or Avernum or Fallout. It has, however, ruined MMOs for me. I just can't put up with stupid amounts of grind, and having an alternative makes them all look worse to me by comparison.
Phantom Gun
Well I guess it depends. I will say that GW did save me from a sea of "Free to download, Free to play" mmos. Talk about mind numbing crap. Anyway it isn't enough to stop me from playing single player RPG's. I highly enjoy almost all of Biowares titles like Jade Empire, BG, NWN, Kotor, and most likely Mass Effect when it comes out. I also like the Final Fantasy Series although i've never played the MMO version. I tried Oblivion but for some reason I just couldn't get into it.
Anyway I won't say Gw has stopped me from playing other rpgs, but it does keep me coming back after a break every so often.

Every summer I fire up my PSX and playing ~~50-100 hours on a really nice game called Legend of the Dragoon. Wish they'd remake that. Great story, nice battle system and the cut scenes were astonishing...really high quality.

the only reason i choose guild wars over other mmorpgs is because these games are studied and designed to be addictive, and if im going to do this to myself im going to do it with one that does not charge an online fee (though they do sort of require you to buy expansion to have an advantage). i mean guild wars has no races per say its more of a ethnicity thing where the last expansions were asian and now the new one is like african (yes egypt is in africa). i mean the plot is weak and the cut scenes have really bad acting, but no online fee keeps me playing. like all mmo rpgs its a game that requires you to be a lifeless nerd, but unlike oblvion and other console type rpgs you can show that off to thousands of people (laugh at them, the same way you were greeted into the game). mmorpg appeal to the obcesive compulsive. guild wars is ia a sense a game of status, and in a way gaining it is way more accessible and rewarding than in other games, withought an online fee. i mean can you picture how much a say wow player is exploited with the monthly fee if he plays two years. these things were designed to become addictive to milk each player, but gw sort of allows you to play withought that.
The Last Cruzader
GW is the MMO I've played the longest, the #1 reason is the PvP, but of course it always needs fixing here and there, but I've gotten to try out WoW , Ragnarok, and many other games the past few weeks but always lost interest right away. Yes I end up getting back on GW and zoning to RA.
The Great Al
Oblivion is ruining all other RPGs, to be honest. The game is just..unbelievable, how in depth there is, and how much there is to do. The Kotor games are great too. GW is waaaay too simple of a game. I only play nowadays when my friends need help questing. Hopefully GW:EN will get me back in. GW2 needs to have much more to do.
Jaythen Tyradel
Guild Wars is hardly perfect, but I have enjoyed.
I tried WoW. Just didn't get into it.
I tried the LOTR online beta, and there where things that I liked, but overall it just didnt get me involved or enthusiastic about playing so I decided to skip out on getting the full game.
I tried the trial of CoH. Again, just didn't get its hooked into me.
I shy away from Monthly pay to play games because of what I see as a value in the game and the continual or intermittent play time I may give to the game. I know many allow to cancel and resubscribe, but I like GW's option of buy the chapter if you wish and put the game down when or however long you like.
I played Prophecies for months straight then put it down just before Factions came out. Played off and on for a while but never got back into it until Nightfall came out. Got Nightfall and played till I completed it. Took a few months break only coming back for holiday events.
More recently started playing more often to get ready for GW:EN and to complete all three chapters on one character.
RPG wise...Chrono Trigger. System Shock 2. Final Fantasy 6.
GW will have to beat those as far as replay and story in order to "ruin" RPG games for me.
PS. Looking forward to Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Bioshock.

I know that GW is not your typical rpg, and the story sucks. But the whole mmo experience was very gratifying to me. Talking to different people about whatever you want is more appealing to me than some cliche story driven rpg. I have wasted hours just talking to people online in GW, no other non mmo rpg can do that. This kinda takes place of a good story for me. Than you have guilds, insane amount of weapons, armor, many different types of characters you can create, and its own economic system. I will always have a place in my heart for old classics like zelda lttp and oot, ff3 on the snes,ff7 on ps1, chrono trigger, kotor, etc.... but in terms of most memorable experiences this has got to be THE rpg for me.

Its more the opposite for me. To me, GW is an MMO of some sort, but clearly not an RPG of any sort. Fatigue finally with GW made me see that I simply prefer other RPG style games more. Problem is its simply in my mind there is still no MMORPG out there that captures qualities of some of my favorite Japanese-developed RPGs in an MMO setting. WoW simply looks horrible style-wise to me and I have no interest in it. I tire a little too of mouse-based point and click activity. Thing is, GW is imho the best of the MMOs out there currently, so I continue to play it, if now only for the MMO aspects more than the RPG aspects. Likely not too much longer, but I'll keep GW2 on the radar.

Tbh... GW didn't ruin anything for me.
First time I played GW... I simply used it as a way to cyber with random female eles (I know that they're most likely guys, and all that crap... but hey, it's fun ^_^)... And throw naked dance parties.
Not much has changed in the... uh... however long I've been playing. Except now I occaisonally turn up in AB to tear scrubs apart, and dispense aid and build advice to Alliance members. And cyber-ing with eles has got dull
There's simply no way that GW can compare to stuff like Zelda or Baldur's Gate, as far as an actual RPG game goes. Except you can't get naked in Hyrule
Just booted up Fire Emblem 7 again, it's still as fun as ever - though I dunno what to call it RPG kinda storyline, check! Flashy battle animations, check! Leading a bunch of socially inept teenagers/bitter old people to save the world, check! ... and it's a strategy game? ^_^
Btw... Golden Sun roXx... Easily one of the best Class systems I've ever had the good fortune to come across. 3 Ronin, that Water chick and MEGIDDO! = w1n.
And KotoR, well, as previous posters pointed out... HK-47 needs to be in more games.

Eh, I'm enjoying Tales of Pirates right now. Can't wait for Tabula Rasa, which looks to be like one very revolutionary MMORPG. Still depends on the specifics of the combat system, how it will run on my computer, and the pricing scheme on wheter or not I buy it.
Pokemon Pearl is also still very adictive (yeah I know, the anime and cutsy marketting campaign was annoying as heck, but the video game itself is still pretty good).

GW, on the other hand, didn't get interesting until you get to the Northern Shiverpeaks, before that you are like, "Dude, WTF is going on here? I was in this nice looking place, then a bomb went off, now its all ugly and why am I doing all this stuff."

Notable RPGs I played a lot of hours forcing me to take a GW break; I mean completely stop playing GW for a considerable time:
- Oblivion: 186 hours (expansion included)
- Titan Quest: 57 hours (expansion included)
I have Neverwinter Nights 2 installed right now, not even started yet, I think I will wait for expansion (Mask of the Betrayer) and make it another one on the above list [expecting +100 hours easily with this one]

Not by a long shot.
The Elder Scrolls pwn GW.
Final Fantasy pwns GW.
Chrono Trigger pwns GW (I heart SNES)
Guild Wars is a "role playing game" only in the sense that each person in the party has a specific role that they play in each action.
There's little to no immersion, fairly/badly written dialogue and plot....
It just can't compare to Oblivion.

I occasionally get fired up over GW and play to the exclusion of other entertainment. Then again, I also play Oblivion, Titan Quest, Lord of the Rings Online, City of Heroes and a couple of games on consoles.
Usually I focus on one for several weeks, then burn through portions of another in a frenzy of awesomeness before returning to City of Heroes/Villains.
I like GW. I must, I've bought all the expansions and pre-ordered GWEN. Still, despite my liking it, there's no worry that I'll ever leave my other games completely. MMO's are excellent replay value

well, it definitielly cant ruin single player classics (Betrayal at Krondor, Fallout, Planescape Torment, Arcanum...) (besides, classical adventures - FTW! If you want enjoyeable game experience, there is nothing like monkey islands (the older, the better) or Simon the Sorcerer series (same age rule applies) )
But it for sure ruined other MMOs for me, big time.
Stuff that you take for granted like Map travel or actually interesting quests and combat (kill 25 rats quest with followup of bringing 25 rat tails ...), equipment and skills accessible in way which makes casucall player just as powerfull and as worthy to play with as 'l33t' person. Simple enough combat system with depth, no need to hunt levels or suck up raid leader to get to interesting content.
Trials for various MMOs always leave me unimpresed. There is simply no competition to GW for player like me.

The fact that GW delivers a huge amount of hours of entertainment without asking for a monthly fee is certainly groundbreaking when it comes to the MMO genre. And while it is an amazingly fun game, its far from perfect.
It's action aspect is the best done part of the game. With the 8-skill choice limit going into battle, it adds strategy to the game, so it's not a mindless hack and slash, but it still doesn't require the brainpower of a genius. It also means that just because you are level 20 doesn't mean you are as strong as you'll ever be. You can continue learning and playing around with different skill sets to find the ones that perfectly fit your playstyle and groups you join.
Storyline is not on par with other dedicated RPGs such as FF and KotoR, but it still has one with somewhat interesting plot twists. With better development and voice acting, the story could be upgraded to a pretty good one, though just being an MMO, it is restricted.
Economically, the game has a lot to learn. While there is a trading system that is completely player run, it in no way affects the performance of the worlds economy, which is static and unchanging. You dont see prices at merchants changing depending on how much of an item is being bought, or how much gold is changing hands. A mostly player run economy could add a lot to the game. The best examply of one is in Star Wars: Galaxies before the overhauls. Players could be classes dedicated to crafts, such as building droids, weapons, armor, etc. They would make blueprints, and then either use those to make items themselves, or sell them to other people. You'd have people raise animals and could sell them as pets. You would have player built cities that were actually run by the players. A player driven world could add to any MMO, and makes for a great experience that is always changing.
You can even learn something from WoW in this aspect. While it doesnt have the economy that SWG had, each player could take on a profession that allowed them to make items without having any affect on their class.
While GW hasnt ruined my experience with other RPGs (I'll always love KotoR and FF7), it has certainly shown me what can be done with MMO's without a monthly fee. Hopefully ArenaNet will learn from this and greatly expand the game with GW2.

I wouldn't say ruined, but saved me loads of money! The only new video games I've bought in 2 years have all been GW campaigns. I am satisfied playing this over all other rpgs. I refuse to play any that have a monthly fee for the sheer principal of having to buy a game and then pay monthly for it. I played Diablo II in the past, Never "Boring" Nights, Dungeon Siege and then Sacred. Except for Diablo II, none of them held my interest like GW.

I had that experience when I tried oblivion when it first came out. Got through the opening underground sequence just to see what the supposedly great outdoor environments look like (they do look awesome), and quit. But the problem was I was still in the grip of GW big time. I got tired of GW and have been taking a break from it for the past couple of months, at least until GWEN comes out. I've been playing a few different games (guitar hero 2 is over the top fun), but mostly oblivion. Trust me, oblivion is a really great rpg, but you need to get to the point of actually wanting to play something other than GW before you can see that. GW is one of those games that you pretty much play to the exclusion of all other games, or not at all. Diablo 2 hit me that way, just not for nearly as long as GW.
