I've been playing for 26 months, almost 3000 hours. I bought all three collector editions, so I paid about $220 for the whole game. That's 8.50/month TOTAL, and about $.07 per hour played at this point. Considering I would have paid approx. $435, or $.14 per hour for WoW, I'm not complaining at all.

As far as EotN being 39.99 goes, I expected that from the get-go. 18 multi-level missions, 10 heroes and the 4 additional missions (the mission pack), plus Anet's gorgeous environments and Jeremy Soule's music, you can't really go wrong for 39.99. I would have been surprised if it was 49.99 though.

You could also look at it this way- For Factions and Nightfall, they had to not only design entirely new professions, but new skills, and maintain PvP balance, they also had to make all the tutorials and other info that players needed to get into them. If they didn't do any of that, imagine how much more time they are putting into pure lvl 20 content!

In Prophecies, you had approx. 7-8 high level missions, out of 25. Factions had 11 out of 13, Nightfall had 18 out of 20. So technically you're getting more than Factions and about the same as Nightfall, without all the poking around in new content tutorials and stuff. I'd say that's a heck of a deal.

Never mind the fact that if you bought Nightfall first, the most you'd be paying for Prophecies is probably 30-40, and Factions maybe 35-45, unless you bought through the online store.

Never mind about your strange definition of Nightfall being mediocre. Factions was so-so, but Nightfall was right up there with Prophecies in terms of content. Not better, it fell quite short. But it was definitely not "mediocre."

Might have well titled this thread "I'm a complete Jackass, here's some proof!" For the price of a couple of DVD movies, I'd say you can't help but to get more than your money's worth. And with the absense of a monthly fee, you're more than free to revisit this content years down the road and still be paying nothing more for it. Burning Crusade cost $30, why hell, I even bought it for $10 on sale recently... but the thing is, all it does is add content to keep people paying the $15/month and not jump ship. It's not as if you should place a single dollar figure on the type of expansion Burning Crusade has, and then set that as the standard for all other games. I think the additional content and the absense of the fee go well above the call of duty.

You got 2 extra character slots per campaign because there were 2 new classes on each of them. EotN is an expansion. No new characters and no way to create characters on EotN means there's no reason to have character slots. Of course if you judge a game by how many character slots it gives you...

everything that needs to be said about the OP's posts has been said...

Guild Wars is in no way a rip off...it is one of the best investments in the (non-completely free) mmo industry.

The people who have previously posted in this thread have posted more than enough proof to prove that fact.

I agree that the price should've been lower for an expansion but that's a customer's view. The best way I can see it is that A-NET is in business of gaming and they following simple economic rules of supply and demand. They set the price just high enough but not too high to get the maximum profit and since a lot of people including myself are addicted and interested in new content we'll still go and buy it. This way they cut off some ppl maybe including yourself from buyers list but overall they make better profit. Simple as that. They're in it to make money and we're just enjoying it so look at it as entertainment or wait a while. I got factions CE at 50 dollars which normally it was like $90.

if you still disagree (all those flaming the OP) post your comments.

One more thing, I look at it at how much I play/enjoy it so since I'm going to get the mission bonus pack thing along with gwen, it might make my purchase a bit more justified but I would've liked an extra char slot at least for sure but that's a want.

While I wouldn't call it a ripoff, GW:EN's price and not having any char slots included indeed makes it the least bang-for-your-buck GW product so far.
I bet it's going to be a high quality product, well worth the money spent, but still it's getting the least value of all realeases.
Talking about ripoffs, one thing much closer to that is the infamous bonus mission pack. For people who aren't interested in buying anything from the online store and being able to get their GW:EN far cheaper than 40$, it has quite a big price tag to it as for just 4 missions. But thats another topic...

Personally, I don't mind the lack of slots (have already bought a few extras), but I can see how people may be bothered by it. Given new character slots, will you guys actually play thru old campaigns when GWEN comes out? If not, then those slots won't be missed at all... until maybe months later.

And who's to say that the additional content in GWEN isn't worth the price? We'll only find out when it's released. Those who are wary can simply wait for reviews.

Also, i laughed at the OP's "we pay $40 for just new content and a minor addition to the map". Maybe he got this impression because the map was joined with Prophecies? I bet the 18 levels of dungeons are not on that map as well.

Oh yeah, 1 last thing.. stop taking sneaky potshots at Factions! some of us happen to like it.

gimmicks likes bonus mission pack, Collector editions, pre-releases are ripoffs. But Gwen at 39.99 is borderline ripoff, i will withhold my judgment until i see how the new content rolls out, but as of now it looks like the least bang for your buck

$40 is NOT bad for an expansion, I am willing to pay the $10 extra and not have an online fee, and they are adding exactly what we wanted. If they came out with a new expansion they would waste creative ideas on creating yet another starting area, and a game that it would take most a week to go through. No new character slots is no big deal because there are no new characters, and the team said they loved working on the lore and world updates for higher level play, so they didn't half-ass an expansion and sell it barely marked down. This would not be unfair even if it were still $50.

How on earth is that a ripoff? You want to be paid for getting the pre-release? Is that it?

The bonus mission pack is free as well. I can see how people can get mad because of having to decide between that and an actual box. But a rip off?? It's free!

Seriously, I'm beginning to wonder if people expect ANET to earn any money. Maybe go play maplestory or something.

I'd still prefer to have an option to buy GW:EN + 2 slots for 50$, to make it on par with a full campagin, and I would buy that. It would still be a little wrong - an expansion valued exactly same as a full game, but what we got now is even worse.

The problem is, this thread could've had a point, but the OP kind of ruined it.

For the sake of argument, I think $29.99 is a fair expectation for something billed as "just an expansion". Most people I know IRL were a little surprised at the suggested retail price, but that won't keep us from buying it, either.

However, the size of GW:EN isn't being taken into account here. There are areas that exist entirely underground, and multi-leveled dungeons... there's no way to tell how huge this is by just looking at the expanded Tyria map. If Anet decided to charge $39.99 instead, they probably had a damn good reason. My guess is that GW:EN is nearly as large as a full game (without the training grounds), and has to be billed as an expansion because you can't start new characters. I bet we're going to get the bang for our buck, and we may be a little surprised by it, too.

Have some faith in the company that developed one of your favorite games. And if nothing else, just think that your extra $10 is going to help fund development for GW2.

I was a bit surprised at the cost as well, but after seeing all the new content, the upgraded engine, 10 new heros, armor, skills, etc. I think it's a pretty decent deal.

Not sure why people get flustered about the slots, there aren't any new professions in GW:EN, nor can you start a toon there.

Simple solutions.

1. Wait until the price comes down.
2. Move to a country that charges reasonable prices for games - e.g. the UK, at £17.99.

Wait a second... I am so confused right now.

Here in Australia I have had to pay $89.95 for all the campaigns, but now I'm only being charged $49.95 for GW:EN. As you can see, it's almost half price!

So, is this different for everyone else? Did the Australian's finally get lucky in their pricing? If it's the same everywhere then I have no idea what this whole topic is all about, if not, how come all of a sudden we're being charged the price of a 'traditional expansion' when others are charged the same as a campaign?

Yeah, this thread would work better without the ", GWEN" in it. I just checked how many hours I've logged into GW, and I can truly say that my hours/$ ratio is so incredibly higher for this game than any other game, I would never call ANet a ripoff. And like was mentioned before, the way they keep updating and doing bonus weekends and all the extra features and the PvE vs PvP and the titles and the collectors and the and the and the. ANet and GW rule. And I'd rather not think about MapleStory. I only played that while waiting on Nightfall to be released.

Well, I'd say that considering most games these days last a couple of days at most, less if you're an accomplished player in that particular genre, then saying GWEN, and by extension GW in general is, of all things, a ripoff is like waving a red flag to a bull. Frankly, theres a massive amount of evidence against this and it's as everyones already said, the sheer playing time you get out of the game. Even if you only get into the game very casually, you can still expect 500 hours playtime before boredom sets in.

Now, lets say for sake of argument that you've paid 200 pounds or dollars or whatever for all 3 campaigns plus gwen. You'll have been ripped off if you had, because it should only cost 40 each at the very most unless you go for the CE every time like I have done. but even then, 500 hours for 200 bob, thats 2 and a half hours per unit of currency. If you're hardcore and have been in from the very beginning or near enough, have all 3 CEs and multiple character slots, bonus items, GOTY upgrade, etc + GWEN, then lets use my example.

My main account has access to all 3 campaigns, has the factions and nightfall CEs and the prophecies GOTY/1mil upgrade. I have 19 character slots and 3 fulltime PvE characters. This has cost me almost exactly £200. Once GWEN comes out, I will have spent about £230 on the game. Then there's my playtime. 2500 hours. You realise that means nearly 11 hours per pound spent? I don't think theres a single other game on the planet that could match that for me, because the most time I've spent playing any other game is around the four to five hundred mark.

And thats from my old skool games - there's been nothing in the past 6 or 7 years thats managed to hold my attention that long, with the possible exception of a couple of the Nippon Ichi strategy games and even they only last me 250 hours at best. Still, I consider any game that lasts me >100 hours to be a worthy purchase, so you can imagine what I think of GW...

I think the main thing that means GW:EN is an expansion and not a standalone game/campaign is the lack of a starter area, which in turn means you have to have one of the previous campaigns.

Nowhere in that does it say less content.
So basically all that you're not getting is 2 character slots, well it's $10 cheaper so one charcter slot, and there is little reason to give that slot.

The previous campaigns have thrown in that slot for free because there are new professions to try, and it's quite possible that there will be much more content to compensate for the lack of said free slot.

Ugh...close this please, mods. First, free stuff? Collectors Editions aren't free, either is the bonus pack. I don't think Collector's Editions are ripoffs though...many games have them.

Wait, I'm dumb/arrogant? I think a game's price is unfair and many people seem to agree. Also, I'm trying to get attention? Are you on crack or just pretending to be an idiot? I've visited this thread once since I made it...yeah, I'm begging for your attention. I've made only like 20 posts on this site...do you know why? It's impossible to get through to people as thickheaded as people on this board. They think GW is still considered a great game. Most MMO players don't even look twice at it. GW doesn't seem to get many sales anymore even though it is a free MMO and it's almost one of a kind.

You don't have to be a dumbass to see through that. I'm just trying to make...somewhat of a point. I chose price...I figured most people would agree it was slightly overpriced, but they can't even admit that. I'm sure ANET knows they are charging too much, and I'm sure they have their reason. I'm sure the main reason is that they aren't getting as much money from Guild Wars as they hoped. I'm sure that they are only making this game for a few last minute $$$ because they really just want to move onto GW2. They know they made mistakes on GW and they can't change that with expansions so they will have to make GW2. They realize that with the way Guild Wars is, they can't really improve it much more because there will always be a lack of depth in pve.

With all honesty, I've defended ANET and GW in many ways. I've said it was better than WoW and that the game is great. I love the game, have like 1000 + hours on it over 26 months. But, I've learned to look at the other side and I've read a lot of criticisms and I think I can easily appreciate the criticisms. The fans can't seem to criticize this game and think that anyone that disagrees is wrong...

Anyway, someone can close this thread...I don't give a RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO.

Btw, most of y'all won't listen but I know we can all agree that GW is a dieing game. If you've been playing for a couple years...look at your friend lists. I kinda did that as an experiment...it proves my point...Guild Wars is dieing and ANET wants some money before they move onto GW2.

Anyway, I'm getting GWEN and GW2 so call me an idiot...I already know I'm stupid for buying another Guild Wars game *sigh*

Btw, there's no point mentioning playtime, all MMOs give you a large amount of playtime. GW is the only MMO I play and it's given me a lot of playtime, but not as much as another game...Super Smash Brothers Melee>.<

I know quite a few people who still play the game who started when Prophecies was first released, and a lot of new people who just recently started playing. One of the great things about GW is that it's easy to come back to, after taking a few months off, unlike something like WoW, where you have to go through the awkward process of canceling, and then renewing your subscription.

You can't say a game is dying because some people have stopped playing the game. From what I can tell, more people play the game now then ever before.

My oldest character is 26 months old. I have all three chapters on two accounts. I believe I have gotten my money's worth so far. I have purchased the GWEN pre-release and will probably buy the full expansion(s) when it is released. I was a little surprised by the cost, thinking that it would be $10 cheaper, but will pay that cost if the preview looks good.

If you feel that the cost is too high .... don't buy it.

I don't see GW dieing. Yes, some of my previous ingame friends have left, but I've made new friends. Even though people leave our guild (their own choice or getting booted for inactivity) we maintain a fairly constant membership, with a lot of people joining our guild that are new to GW. People come and people go. Say goodbye to those that have moved on and make new friends. Sorry to hear that your friend doesn't play much anymore, but there ARE a lot of new players if you bother to look around.

I still like GW a lot but I can't argue with the fact that it's dieing and there are almost no new players. Nice way to lash out at the community and talk about how supposedly, “GW is dieing” (2 things you never want to do here). The price fix for EotN was already in motion way before A-net could say the word “expansion.” Reason for being is the fact that there was another price that came close to this, which was previously relevant. Can you guess what it was? It is something that I can actually see you make a better argument for.

The PvP Packs had been released for some time now and their price consisted of $39.99 U.S. So to me and some others, it took out the guess work to what EotN price was going to be fixed at. The PvP Packs don’t offer anything new other then the fact they have a way to unlock all the skills for PvP, with or without having that particular campaign. That’s it, nothing more and nothing less. However there are others who think they are pretty worth it, but I am not one of them.

So to me EotN is a well deserved price for a new GW product; it has far more to offer then those PvP packs. Nevertheless you can still wait till it comes into the discount bin at your local retail store; or don’t but it at all. The argument that you’re making about price has no warrant if you’re buying it anyway, at the starting price of $39.99. You might also consider making your comparisons a little deeper bearing in mind that you were comparing Super Smash Bro. to GW play time (two very different games).
