Is Gw:en Really the End?
Shanaeri Rynale
To help in the waiting before Gw:en i've been looking at all the videos and interviews I can find and i've noticed a softening on the status of Gw:en
Back in the PC gamer article they said that Gw:en was the last expansion pack of Gw 1 (my paraphrase)
Then it became the last planned expansion
And then it was called the first expansion.
This implies that Anet are keeping their options open, and I suspect there will be another expansion towards this time next year.

well i really hope they put all their effort and energy in Guild Wars 2 and not in another expansion IMO.
I think GW:EN is the last expension.

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes,
an aeroplane - Lenny Bruce is not afraid.
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn,
world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs.
Feed it off an aux speak,, grunt, no, strength,
The ladder starts to clatter with fear fight down height.
Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site.
Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck.
Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.
Look at that low playing!
Fine, then.
Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do.
Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and the revered and the right - right.
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.
It's the end of the world as we know it.

They'll need to add more content if they plan on keeping their user base. I highly doubt EoTN will offer enough content to keep people interested up until GW2 is released.

Gw:EN = 1st expansion
Proph = 1st campaign
Factions = 2nd campaign
Nightfall = 3rd campaign
Proph, Factions, and nightfall are all standalone games but can be linked together for 1 game. Gw:en is the 1st expansion you need to own at least proph, factions, or nightfall to play Gw;en. Thus making Gw:en the 1st expansion of guildwars.

They might have some ideas and such, but I'm guessing they are waiting to see just as much as we are at this point.

There will be no more 'mayor updates'.
But they won't leave bugs and such.
And maybe a couple of things made by aome anet coders in spare time.

Unless they want people to keep playing. Then they need to add some stuff. 2 years of the same thing will make this die quick.

Jeff Strain said in an interview that they *might* do another expansion. Even Anet doesn't know for sure.
MithranArkanere
Do not forget that they are always improving. We had a lot of smal interesting updates, like the favor, the templates, the storage...
I doubt such things would stop... there won't be simply more regions... maybe one area, like ruins of orr, or new God realms... but I doubt anythng else...
It would be greatly apreciated anything else they made, though. They will had mos of the comunity eating in their hands if they made so.
Whatever they do, if they stop the 'updates', people will start losing interest.
For two years, update pages should still go.
And I doubt the balance would stop. They like to change skills once in while.

Well.. it seems like they plan to do more things like the missions obtained through purchases via the in-game store, so...

Ow... I'll buy the Orrian ruins for up to 30€, XD.

Well I hope GW:EN will be the end of the storyline but my guess is extra content will show itself between the time we finish GW:EN and Guild Wars 2.
Wether it is free or we pay for it is another story yet to be told.

Not to mention Hard Mode. Because they need to retain the player base to maximize sales of GW2, they almost have to keep adding things to keep interest up.
natuxatu
Yeah they seem pretty keen on getting to Guild Wars two (which is also where they are putting their money) so i dont think they will make another expansion especially with an 08-09 release.
But no it's not the end because Guild Wars will continue on with GW2 ^^

I suspect online-only mission packs. Why else would they be pushing everyone to get GWEN online by offering a mission pack.

I wouldn't mind seeing GW:EN like expansion for Factions and Nightfall. How long did it take them to crank out GW:EN? Less then a year obviously since it's been less then a year since Nightfall came out. Add in some decision time to go from a full-campaign to expansions, they might be able to get out more expansions before the release of GW:2.
Heh, since Cantha's to the south of Tyria, perhaps the next expansion will be Guild Wars: Eye of the South.

I'm silently hoping that they'll take Prophecies to the next level... Flesh out more of the unused map via Sorrows Furnace-esque updates. Theres loads of interesting looking places that still aren't being utilized in EotN.
Heres hoping!

Don't think we have seen the last of the first Guild Wars, after all they need to keep people interested untill Guild Wars 2 comes out.

I think Cantha has the most open empty space of all 3 continents...
Maybe they could do something there... Orr would be awesome too of course.

I Will be so ticked if they stop everything and solely work on GW2 after GW:EN.
Odds are I will not have the computer able to play GW2 when it comes out.
And for the love of god EVERQUEST STILL MAKES EXPANSIONS FOR EQ1! Try to learn from them, GW. They got a good system going.

I agree with the others. It has to sell well enough for them to say, “what the heck let’s go create another one.” Otherwise it will be just small add-ons here and there.
Thom The Brawler
I think the Hall of Monuments is meant to keep the player base until GW2 hits the shelf. The whole idea behind it was to give the current players an early investment in GW2. Players who drift away after GW:EN will most likely come back to see what they get from the hall in 2. So I wouldn't count on new major expansions to keep ppl around. It would be nice tho lol
ReZDoGG
GW:EN most likely won't be end of GW. They said themselves that they need to keep people interested in GW until GW2... and they will most likely need to keep adding expansions to do so. I'm sure they might not have anything planned, but maybe in another 6-8 months there will be another expansion.
They most likely will be working on something else after EoTN is off and settled... after fixing anything that needs to be fixed. They will probably add an expansion for each chapter, which should give some time until GW2. But thats just my opinion.
But definately GwEN ain't the end of Guildwars... they even mentioned that they most likely will still add expansions/campaigns to original GW even after GW2 is released.... for people that will still be playing the original GW. They said they don't want to leave anyone out. They will have alot on their hands, but they gotta do what they gotta do to keep the money and players flowing.

We can say pretty safely that Anet has made it clear that a majority of their team is working on the new Guild Wars 2.
That means the Bonus Mission pack was most likely finished months ago, and they are simply spacing everything out to leave as little time between the transition of GW classic to 2.
GW:EN-August 31st, pretty much september
October- Halloween Festival
November- Mission pack is released
December- Wah wah wah winterday!
Jan-Feb- canthan new years?
----
Not to mention all of the silly annoying 100k tournaments.
So while it may be the end for newer content, we might see a couple updates..but chances are they will be in the forms of PvP updates and events.

I look at it this way. Arenanet has a successful business model that they do not want to mess up too much here... so this is what I see happening on their development cycle to maintain the influx of consumer funds as it has been so far...
1: all resources go into GW2 once GW:EN is gold.
2: GW2 beta, and going gold.
3: Development team breaks up into sub teams again. as they did with the chapters.
4: 6months after GW2 is gold, GW1 will get another expansion.
5: 6months after that expansion GW2 get an expansion.
New BiAnnual cycle begins. Every 6 months or so there is potential for an expansion on either chapter, depending on current game populations and demand. If GW1 population and participation drops drastically, then its possible after the 2nd expansion, if its not considered a successful release it would be the last.
However if both games have successful expansions, they will be able to maintain 2 team rotations on expansions, one for GW1 & one for GW2 and still keep the biannual income flowing. while allowing a full year again for each expansion to be fully developed.
The other factor I was looking at is the test of the bonus mission system...
Consider this option if its considered successful...
75% of the team is working on full expansions to GW2 at all times. they release biannually as expected.
15%-20% of the team works on quarterly Update expansions (like 1/4 a gw2 expansion in content. Think Sorrows Furnace kinda thing only a little more) These quarterly updates would be available online only via the Anet store for like IDK $9.99... Some events in these GW1 expansions may lead up to some revelation in upcoming GW2 expansions later on in the year. (Allowing for back story and lore to be established once more in GW1 and extended to GW2)
the remaining 5%-10% would be working on holiday event content and that kind of thing... The freebe stuff... IDK maybe more % then that, but its the tweaking stuff that they do from time to time to quests or missions, or skills...
If they go either of those routes, I can see both games in the franchise continuing to be successful for a long time to come.

Think of Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam. There was an intensly large amount of ppl playing BF1942 for aggges and only few for BF:V. If GW2 comes out but more ppl play GW 1 you can be certain more will be added for GW 1.
Online games such as GW live, and are updated just as long as the people play it. The fate of how many more GW 1 products we get, rests in our paws.

That said even if GW:EN is a hit that doesn't mean there will be another expansion - but it would increase the chances.

Hmm, well from various things i've read it would seem that this will be the last expansion, but they are going to come out with more bonus packs. The time between this expansion and GW2 does seem very lengthy though. Oh well the more they focus on GW2, the better it might be.

"...We're very big into narrative and storylines," said Jeff Grubb, the title's Creative Director. "(In Eye of the North) we've thrown in story elements that are nods to our fans." According to Grubb, one of the major reasons for returning to Tyria was simply because out of the three locations in their universe that the Guild Wars team has created, it's always been Tyria that's produced the most passion. Eye of the North will answer many of the requests fans have made since the end of Prophecies. Who are the Charr and what's happened to their society since the players killed their gods in Prophecies? When can we get back to a pretty fantasy universe more like pre-Searing Ascalon? Will we even find out what happened to a lot of the characters we came to care about in those games?
The other reason is a bit more prosaic. Eye of the North is a bridge to Guild Wars 2, not only from a gameplay mechanics perspective, but also from a storytelling perspective. Eye of the North is designed to set up races and situations that won't pay off for another 200 years when Guild Wars 2 is set. There's nothing definitive in the statement "the first expansion for GW" to indicate that GW:EN is the end, but they have tied it in pretty heavily with GW2. Seems like their keeping the door open without getting our hopes up for future expansions.
Resources obviously need to be dedicated to GW2, but the player base will move on if we need to wait a full two years between GW:EN and GW2. My gut tells me mini-mission packs or Sorrows Furnace-sized expansions to fill in some of the gaps in the maps.

No, Afterwards our characters are at it like rabbits, trying to pop out a new hero for us to train up and love in GW:2...[SPOILERS] only reason we can't "play through" that part of the game is because players of a low age are still under the impression that babies come from Storks...such a discovery would scar them for life, and parents all over the world would be angry at ANet for letting slip.
