GW:EN-Related Problem: Display Driver Stopped Responding

The display went black with the screeching yet sometimes hearing GW music too and the pc graphics were shot to hell and had to reboot whenever trying to talk to Skjaldur Lightfingers. I'll try that -noshaders thing and hope for the best, I guess.

My pc has Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family
Video BIOS Version 3402

Not sure what else needed since I'm a non-techie but it would be nice to eventually play or -see- the preview on my own pc. :/

Same here on my laptop. I noticed that the crashes were more often if I ALT click to see the nearby NPC's/Allies, specifically once I moved the curser near a displayed name. I ended up using the "Auto-detect" feature under graphics options, this reduced the number of crashes, but didn't eliminate them.

I just used the -noshaders and now the display driver messes up again and I have to reboot the pc. This time I didn't even make it logging in all the way, I was loading into the town..

And on my last post I didn't even get to target as my guildie is the one that talked to her to test things out and then I my display driver locked up and crashed. :/

This worked for me so far. Though it'll probably happen again now that I'd said that :P

the F11 and low shaders in the options seems to be doing the trick so far, been mucking about for around an hour now with no lockups.

I am currently running a onboard intel video

Yeah, lowering all the graphics to low or off is what finally worked for me to be able to play it. I just can't take any nice screenshots of my game play, which I like doing.

Unfortunately lowering the graphics quality doesn't do the trick for me I'm hoping for an Arena Net fix.

i've been having all these problems that you have already described, also using Intel 82915G chipset.... i really hope they fix this soon or this sneak pek will be a total waste of time for me

it is still a problem as we speak, i've been trying all day. drivers are all up to date same as everyone else. i have an Intel 945gm Express Chipset Family. never any problems in the past. Absolutely tonnes of memory etc as laptop is quite new. I really hope this is a fixable problem as my partner is playing on their laptop beside me with their ATI Radeon vid card and i am just itching to run around Northern Tyria!! I don't know if i can play other campaigns still will check it out.

thanks for the tip, i have done this (although my res is 1280 x 800) and so far no more crashes... i am grateful to be able to play the preview weekend (finally!!) although long term i hope i don't have to sacrifice quality of gameplay just to play. that would be dissapointing (even though so far i haven't noticed a massive decrease in graphical quality by doing the above). Thanks again for the advice and i hope i don't have anymore crashes. *fingers crossed tightly*

Yu are right. When I made it playable yesterday, it was with both -dx8 and - noshaders. That was before I discovered the noshaders idea on the forums.

Today, I tried skipping -dx8 switch using only -noshaders. I crashed immediately after loading to Sifhalla, without even moving a step.

Tried again with both switches and it works.

Same issue is happening to me...got home yesterday morning looking forward to the preview weekend then BOOM -_____- Happened several times, all in GWEN areas. Glad to know I'm not the only one this is happening to. It happened to me this morning as well when I was loading into the guild hall. I was really looking forward to this preview weekend...I'll have to try the tips you guys gave and hopefully I'll be able to at least catch part of it.

May be fixed by game release. But unless someone is giving me a copy of GW:EN I wont be playing it.
I spent the money for the preview event from game stop ( I refused to purchase through the in game store but that is another thread ) to play GW:EN with my husband and friends.
I did report to tech support only to be told my drivers were not up to date. But thing is they ARE current. I did reinstall the drivers but locked up just as fast as before if not faster.
When I responded to the ticket that this was the case, and that my drivers are current, I am being met with no response...even a we are looking into it would be nice.
I also pointed them to this site and all the intel video threads.

I feel I am getting the typical tech support answer you get from ALL tech support, that is all on my end.

I call bs if I was able to play the other three chapters on my machine then I should be able to play this one...and improved graphics for GW:EN yeah ok.. where. Haven't seen any difference while watching my husband play.

I'm a bit disheartened by the GW:EN preview event. My understand was that I had a "sneak peek" to an entirely functional game. Instead, it strikes me that GW:EN is a semi-functional nightmare of glitches that hardly qualifies as a closed beta in terms of hardware compatibility. I'm very frustrated that I wasted money, but I have a great deal of hope that A-Net can fix the problems before GW:EN is public.

seems like almost all the problems has something to do with integrated graphics and their lack of support for shaders and T&L.

for those with 945/950/965 chipsets, you might want to download the very latest drivers from intel. i heard that they did a few software tweaks to make them capable of hardware shaders and T&L acceleration. there's a thread about this on this forum on the previous page i believe.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I have the most recent drivers from intel on my machine. I own a Dell and can only use dell drivers for my machine. I have tried to download direct from Intel.

So moving on, I compared the Dell updated drivers that are on my machine and they are the same drivers that are on Intel.

I HAVE THE CURRENT DRIVERS. I am not computer illiterate. I know my way around my machine inside and out.

I played through all three chapters of this game with no problems graphic wise ever until now.

Not meaning to be rude, but I am beyond frustrated at this point with GW Anet and NCSoft and yes it goes way beyond this problem.
This is the icing on the cake.

if there's a fix for it, it will most likely be done in time for the official release. if not, well, the graphics requirement for GW games have been steadily climbing across all three campaigns. although it is highly unlikely, but GW:EN might just need a discrete graphics card to run. even the original GW was not intented to run on the earlier GMA series (900, 910, 915), and people had to come up with some clever driver tweaks to get it to run properly. you didn't post which exact GMA model you have. if you post that, maybe we can get a better picture of what's going on.

my geforce FX5500 PCI card can run the preview weekend quite well, if i ignore the 17fps average that i'm getting. if that piece of junk can run it, i see no problems why a GMA 950 can't. the GMA 950 is more advanced in terms of shader support. in all likelihood though, the problem probably IS on your end.

instead of trying the latest drivers, have you tried earlier drivers? try all the drivers from now to the ones from 2005. maybe one of them will be able to run it. failing that, try the latest DX9.... or do you have to download it from dell as well?

Find below my graphics report short form.
I also have the current version of DX9 as well, downloaded from the mircosoft site.
Only hardware drivers must be direct from dell
And as I said above, I did send this to to tech support.

the latest graphics driver for your intel GMA is 6.14.31.xxxx

i don't know if it's available from dell, but do try to get that version. it's the one that intel has seriously beefed up to make IGPs capable of running Farcry and Battlefield.

Makes me wonder if it's even worth buying GW:EN if this keeps happening. It's frustrating that I paid to play the prerelease and am hit with this error. Like B/P Ranger, everything is up to date. I noticed that the "rubberband-limbs" glitch that happened when the GW:EN map was added in a month or so ago happened to the intel integrated cards people as well.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone on this, many of my guildies and allies have insisted that it was only me and that I need a new computer. I don't see why I would have to purchase a new PC when this one works fine, and has always ran GW fine.

The problem with that is that this isn't a new game. It's not even a new campaign. It's an expansion of an already existing game for loyal players. A lot of loyal players who can not even play it. Arenanet is shooting themselves in their own foot if they can't fix it. After all, this game was intended to pay their subscription-free bills by those very same loyal players.

it's a fact that graphic requirements WERE climbing, and it most likely WILL climb with GW:EN. it is very likely that GW:EN will run on integrated chips once the actual game goes live. this kind of problem probably won't be fixed in time for the preview weekend.

and please do consider the driver version i posted (6.14.31.xxxx). that's the latest intel GMA driver and it has been proven to increase the performance of the GMAs substantially.

It looks like the problem is due to a 2d texture being bound to a stage where a pixel shader expects a cubemap. The nVidia and ATI drivers are handling it gracefully but the Intel driver with the 915 and 945 is failing. This can definitely be fixed by release but does not look like there's a quick fix that can get out immediately since there are some content changes involved.

The good news is in every place I've seen the problem, switching to "low" shader quality does work around it. You can set low shader quality by going to graphics options (f11) then look under the Advanced section of the Graphics tab and there is "Shader Quality". Set to low and enjoy the event. For release you can crank back up to high.

I cant get that driver because its not on Dells site. Thanks for trying to help
Point is I could play the three chapters before this, now because of wasting 5 bucks for a pre order I cant play its screwed up the rest of the game for me..
And what will they do to compensate those of us who cant play the preview?
I doubt anything, now while to some of you 5 bucks isn't a big deal, its a very big deal to me.

It is crashing integrated Nvidia Geforce cards as well. I understand changing the graphics requirements for a different campaign or a sequel, but it's ridiculous for an expansion of an already existing game.

I do appreciate all the help you all have tried to provide I really do.
Maybe ncsoft should hire you guys to tech service.

As I am sure you can tell I am upset and dissappointed. And to know that my machine ran GW just fine before I put in a stupid key for a much hyped preview and a release that is honestly just a week away..this is a beta imho

A too early release killed me playing or ever wanting to play Tomb Raider again when they rushed the release of Angel of Darkness.

Windows driver details report that as version 6.14.10.4859 with a date of 8/7/2007 (I updated to it when the trouble first started yesterday).

Blackpawn are you saying the graphics have changed in all three chapters due to the preview? While it's good that it should be fixed by GW:EN release date, that's a week away, and some people aren't able to play at all in any chapter.

my mistake, the actual driver version is 6.14.10.4859, with a date of 8/10/2007. that's from the intel download site: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filt...4&submit=Go%21

go for the second one in the list. the first one is a developer's version. give it a whirl if you can.

as for all chapters not working, that's probably not anet's fault. the new game engine additions are exclusive to GW:EN. nothing in the other three chapters are touched (at least i believe).

It was the same situation with my guild and I as well. I was the only one who was having these problems, and they insisted it was my computer, and not GW;EN. Luckily setting my shader to low worked and the only problem I have now is lag, which most people are probably experiencing.

This happened to me, and I was livid because, like some others on this thread, I have played through the entirety of Guild Wars and its campaigns without a hitch. At least, not a hitch after I got the inventory freeze one taken care of.

Now this.

If it isn't a bug on ANet, I'll assume they have forsaken us with Intels and just not buy GW:EotN.

There are my specs. 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express. Whoopee.

I've already tried every conceivable workaround, going so far as to actually force-install the unvalidated latest drivers on Intel's site for my Dell (Inspiron 6000 Notebook). It STILL doesn't work.

The problem hit me during cutscenes, dialogue prompts, and, most fumingly, the Skill Window. Gwen's mug is apparently too taxing on my system. Or horribly bugged.

Sigh. -_-

Intel integrated Intel Media Accelerator 915, Intel Intel Media Accelerator 910, Nvidia integrated GeForce 6100, and GeForce 6150 graphics cards are all affected. It's mostly with integrated graphics cards.
