Will NCSoft's servers overload as everyone tries to buy GW:EN from the ingame store?
Zeph
I've been wondering about this for a while now, hoping that ANet would make GW:EN available to buy a day or so before the 31st to avoid this, but now it seems that won't be the case.
Will the NCSoft servers overload when thousands of people try to buy GW:EN online @ 12:01?
The reason I fear they will is because when the pre-order pack came out, I, like many more, tried to buy it the moment it became available. I was online when the update came which added the pre-order pack so thought "ooo might as well get that while I'm here". I entered the store, put all my details in to buy it and click the button to send the transaction... only for it to time out a couple of minutes later with a message saying something like "unable to complete transaction". So I decided to leave it until the next morning when the server load would be a bit less. When I got up next day I had received a mail saying my transaction completed, so I logged on to check and I had actually bought the pack, despite the store appearing to time out and the transaction appearing to fail.
Now, that was just for the pre-order pack.
So what is going to happen when MANY more people try to buy GW:EN? I really fear the servers will overload and we'll all be sitting around trying to get the store to work, or worst still, end up getting multiple charges because we had transactions we thought timed out on us but which actually went through.
What do you think guys?

Well, let's hope not. I'd be miiiighty angry if that happened to me, an if it does happen to people I bet A-Net will get some rather nasty emails.

I'm just afraid it might get stuck on the "processing transaction" screen.

I bet that it will not work without any problems, I'm not saying it will cause a worst case scenario, but I cannot imagine that everything will be just fine. But I'd like to be wrong this time, of course.
BTW, worst case would be that hundreds of thousands of players are not able to buy ingame for hours because the store crashes completely
Make it available 1 day before release I'd say, we cannot access Gwen anyway, so what is the point in this strategy?

"This is the Gamestop pre-order system your game 'Guild Wars: Eye of the North' will be ready for pickup 'Wednesday, before noon'"
Picking my copy up from Gamestop later today, since the software is in, the content just isn't "live" yet. I'll get to spend most of tommorow drooling over my manuals and waiting for the content to go live.
Since i just started playing this month (yes already buying expansion i like the game ) i've already paid my Online store 29+ to get the bonus pack.

I reckon it will be like when the preorder first came out, maybe worse. Just remember to be patient, and if the transaction times out leave the store and check whether it completed or not.
tyche7
My bets are -- Yes. The preorder bombed out on me as well. I never did see the "transaction complete" type screen but it turns out that everytime I tried to process my order it did somehow go through and my credit card company called me as there were 4 charges of the same thing on my card. Luckily we got the extra 3 dropped so I only paid for and got one preorder - and it was cheap. With the full version and the great number of people ordering - I foresee this thing happening to a LOT of people if Anet doesn't seriously compensate and add another server or something.

What you described is a common issue with the store, had you tried to purchase again you would have paid for and recieved 2 keys...beware when buying game that you do not try to buy it again and get charged 2 times or more for the same game. (this is also the reason for the change in EULA that says credit card "charge backs" will get you banned. If you cllick 10 times and every time it says transaction failed, then you find out you just bought the $40 campaign for $400 you are screwed. Because a-net will not refund and if you charge back they close your whole account...pretty shitty if you ask me)

I hope not. I have to buy two copies through the online store (one for my girlfriend, one for me).

Yeah, thats the exact thing I fear will happen. I just hope I'm wrong.

I am not one to normaly complain, but this has become a worry of mine. I would like some confirmation from A-net that they are prepared to handle the influx. I truly enjoyed the pre-view weekend, but I've noticed that nobody is mentioning the incredible lag as a million people started downloading the game at midnight. It literaly took an hour for me get to into the first dungeon, and I have a pretty fast DSL connection. Basic dial-up connections will probably be useless. To whit: "There will be weeping and wailing, and gnashing of teeth, in the great and terrible day." Mark your calenders kids, it will be a massacre.
RTSFirebat
Most likely it will, which is why I find it odd a.net have not release it to buy earlier.

OK, can this actually happen?
As far as I know, you can't buy the same Game from the online store more than once, can you? I mean, once you buy Nightfall, it says "Already purchased."
And even if you get 10 "account pending" charges to your credit card, one should go through, the rest should drop off.
Does anyone have a concrete example of their account actually being withdrawn multiple times for the same product?

I pre-ordered my copy because I had the same idea (major lag/crash) however my copy has now been delayed might buy online if the store holds out and give the CD key (when it arrives) to a guildie who doesn't have the cash to buy.
Red-Tide
and of course, not a peep from Gaile or ANET on this.

Double post, sorry.

$10 says it will, yep. And I have to get two copies too (two accounts). It'll be fun! No idea why they won't sell it earlier, as we won't be able to access it until Friday anyway o_O

If the online store isn't working for me I have a backup plan...since I bought my fiancée a copy from an online store, so since she isn't quite as mad on this wonderful game as I am she wont care if I use her copy. All bases covered.
Miss Persephone
Guys, Gaile has commented on this, and it doesn't look that good - http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10191895
So they can't let us buy it beforehand, as its not a useable product. I can understand where they are coming from with this, but technically they already did this with the pre order pack.
Why not have the option, as they did when Factions came out, that if you have added a pre order key, you have access to the full game for 12 hours or so until you can your boxed set from the store down the street, or buy it online to save all the servers crashing at once. Seems pretty reasonable.
Both my boyfriend and myself will be online at the time of release and attempting to buy from the online store (which may I add, we are already paying extra for, purely for the bonus pack missions). I do have serious reservations about buying from the store, and I do predict some kind of store crash. In which case, I will go buy it from my local GAME, and the only people who really lose out are ANET.

Last time it didn't accept any of my credit cards in the first day. The next day it worked fine. Still, you miss the premiere.

Im in the same boat you are.

I just won't purchase it until the day I play it. (sunday.)
Then, all the traffic has gone.

Xanatos_De_Creon
this stinks. really, they make it a better deal to buy it from a store rather than directly from them.
Griff Mon
As I won't be playing it until Friday evening West Coast Time, I will wait until then. Things should have settled down by then.
Takeko Nakano
My copy is in the post, so will get it either tomorrow or Friday.
DergeDraconis
Can't you buy it from the plaync store also? Of course you need to have an account there. You wouldn't get your $5 pre order discount, but whats $5 if your in a hurry.
IlikeGW
Their usual strategy is to let shit hit the fan with the store. Why would it be different?
Njaiguni Blaze
I had no latency issues whatsoever during the preview event, except for crowded towns, but that's not exclusively to GW:EN. I dunno, time will tell. I think(/hope) they might've learned something from the latency isseus when GW:F and GW:NF went live.
Stolen Souls
Well, it happened with the prerelease pack....if they made absolutely no changes whatsoever, and plan to release the full game the same way, I can easily see the same thing happening. Just imagine being charged multiple times like people were for the prerelease pack. Except this time it isn't a $5 product we're talking about here. Multiple $40 charges....mega FTL. :/

Again, I'd like to see a confirmed case of this happening.
I have serious doubts anyone actually got charged twice because your credit card should process only one charge, and the rest will drop off.

Try second time, goes through, does not give error about "already" on you account.

Ah, but you have proof that it DIDN'T happen? If you do, I'd like to see it.
There were multiple posts and threads by people complaining that more than one charge ended up on their cards. Whether or not the charges were dropped afterwards I don't know. Bottom line is, it shouldn't happen in the first place. Either let us buy it a little early to lessen the load on the store when it's released, or make damned sure the store can handle it when it is.

I got a double charge from the pre-release debacle, but A-net only processed one of the charges. The other one dropped off without my having to do anything. It never went passed the pending point in my account. I would imagine the same would be true if I double clicked again, tho I think I personally learned my lesson then lol.
Anet should add a warning about re-clicking the sales button right on the appropriate page of the store transaction.
And announcing an earlier time to purchase it online would only mean that the aforementioned server crash would happen at that time instead, granted that would be better than when the game went live, but it would do nothing to stop double charges and stuff like that from happening.
