I used to hate pre-searing Gwen, but that was more about her ability to get in the way and bodyblock near corners. Now I find her entertaining - silly/cute kid, desparate escapee, vengeful angst-ridden young woman. It would be kinda nice to see her mature and develop further, but it's a game with a very limited storyline - as is, she's got the best character development of any NPC by far.

I liked cute little pre-Searing Gwen. She chats with you, gives you little heals, plays music, and is so friendly.
I figured whatever she came back as wouldn't be pretty after that whole bit with her burning everything down in-game, but I could have done without the scenery-chewing and braying she came back with. Yeah, she's a teenager. Yeah, bad stuff went on. But there's really no call for "You are all animals. SAVAGE... ANIMALS... AND I WILL DANCE ON YOUR GRAVES!"Shut up, post-Searing Gwen. Yeah, I thought I saw another EotN rant topic when I read the name. For the sake of it, GW:EN was a horrible let-down and failure. It was just an overpriced advertisement for what, at this rate, may be a not-too-great game anyways.
Gwen herself, though, I hate. With a burning passion. Of flames. She was damn annoying in Pre-Searing, and just as much irritating now. That bitch needs to take a drink of water, inhale a Sharpie, and stfu.

Gwen is not exactly a likable character, which is kind of weird since she is the inofficial name-giver for the first and only expansion of Guild Wars. She is a lot like Mathilda from the movie Léon, except that Mathilda eventually grew up till the end of the movie. Gwen remained, for all we know, at the stage where Mathilda took Leon's gun and fired random shots out of the window, i.e., venting her understandable frustration, helplessness, and loneliness in an irrational and potentially self-destructive way.
Through in-game behaviour, cutscenes, game trailers, mysterious items, and numerous other references and hype, Gwen has become a sort of legend and mystery of herself, some kind of inofficial mascot to the GW series that required further elaboration, but ANet failed to create an actual conclusion to her development. Or is it an actual conclusion to say "And she lived full of hatred ever after"? That's why I dislike her as a character.

BUT Wouldn't you people say that a game needs to have these sort of characters too as far as NPC's go. You're not supposed to like all the characters and are supposed to really like others. The point is that different characters make you feel different things and get you emotionally involved.
IRL you don't like anybody and everybody. The game would be dull with just "nice" characters. Gwen has an important role imho.
I wouldn't mind an deeper insight into her life tho so we could get to know all sides of her and not just what is black and white.

Nian, why not? The exposition is the exact same: Both are young girls who lost their relatives, their home, and generally everything that's important to them. Both want revenge on the bad guys above anything else, and they learn to fight from someone who is a professional at it, plus a sort of parent figure.

I found that I could always put up with Gwen and (as dumb as it is) I could sympathise with her past and how that made her angry... But I really was always hoping Pyre would give her a good slap to wake her up.
Pyre? I didn't actually mind him that much. He didn't blindly follow other people's ways and was willing to work with and, in the end, respect those he had been taught to hate and despise. He had more character than alot of the human Heroes despite what failings he may have had.
EDIT: I also agree with Nian on the whole like/dislike balance. Besides, not everyone likes likable people as they find it cheesy and sickly... Like our good ol' psycho-lover Mournblade, there. *Backs away*

I don't hate her. She's annoying at times (like whenever she's in a cutscene) but as long as she performs the simple Mesmer tasks I lay before her she keeps her head.

I hate Gwen just as much as I hate the Frog. They are both 2 overrated characters that have no reason to be liked as much as they are. I've never understood why either are so popular.
