Character renaming - coming soon?
milan
On the European Plaync site I noticed a news article ref City of heroes/villians.
European Plaync site
Seems that they have just got character renames, at a cost but the option is there. (rather steep at £5.99 a pop).
Could we see this coming our way sometime soon?

Ouch. A price like that only makes sense if there's some need to have an actual human employee administer the change.

Would I pay $12 to rename a character? No.
Would somebody do it? Yes.
EDITED for pricing mistake

Not $6, it's $12 after the conversion...
Painbringer
And after doing it finding out the name you want is already taken?
nebuchanezzar
Thats 6 pounds(British monetary system) which is closer to $12+.

Lol money-sinks are extending outwith PlayNC's games now.
Gaile said that there's some tampering involved with changing character names (such as altering custom weaponry and so on) but I can't imagine that taking long to do. Not £6 worth of time.

We can already change our names .. just get enough friends to report you for an offensive name But no I wouldn't pay to change a character name in any game.

Meh, I'll get new names for GW2 anyway...

Bryant Again
Not too bad of an idea, I guess. I know that my friend wants to take the "Iol" out of his name real badly, so good news for him.

Lol. For that 12 bucks, you could buy a new character slot and create a whole new character with the name you wanted.

For people who hate their names (Leet Haxor FTL) this makes sense.
If you're like me, and can spend 20 minutes thinking of a name alone (not counting starting campaign, skin tone, face, hair, size... ) by the time I've created my character, it's already been too much of an investment to change!

I actually took the time to pick a name I would like when I make my characters.. unlike some of the players that have names similar to "Omg Noob Eater" (when in fact they are n00b ).
I guess some poeople would be willing to pay for a name change..

Id rename a few characters myself for a more streamlined cult of Characters. I'd even pay $9.99 for it. Heck Id even rename my Paragon to "Worthless Spear Guy", "Wasted for One Year" or even "I Am Dead People".
BUT in all seriousness if they can do this it would be great. After a few years of playing I'd love to have a simple name conversion for all of my characters. With 10 characters that would be $100.00 total for ANet. Makes you wonder how much profit ANet would make just by doing this.

its a nice idea, really nice.
as if name change was brought out ingame people would prob change there name weekly, this keeps a name a name and reduces uneeded name changes + more money for a-net hopefully better gaming experiance.

I think it would be nice if A-net lets us change the name of one character, but changing character names on a daily bases sounds like it could have problems
oceanicdemigod
I'd sooner spend 12 dollars to change a character's hairdo than to rename them hehe. I plan out all my characters very well and their names match who they are. However, some need a fresh new look. I really don't want to change names or skin tones or faces or height or even gender (as seen on April Fool's Day - which obviously changed Faces and Hair in the process). A new hairdo would be a better use of my money.
plasmasword
It's only worth it if your character has FoW armor or tons of skills/elite skills unlocked...

I wont pay $12 bucks for a name change. That is ridiculous.
DarkGanni
If it's cheap...sure I would rename one of my characters but not $12 bucks.
New Buddha
be good if they allow for gender change at the same time.
Lady Lozza
Given that there seems to be quite a bit of fudging in the system, changing all customised items, etc, perhaps the $12 is also intended as a deterent. With several million accounts, and goodness knows HOW many characters, who really needs or wants the programmers to spend hours and hours changing player names. For $12 only those who really want the change will get it- thus not wasting Anet's time.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid that this may be the wave of the future for A-Net, at least until GW2 comes out.
In short, A-Net will continue to need revenue streams to fund their operations, and the eventual dwindling sales of the four chapters have to cause the company (and its shareholders) a bit of pause.

Let's set some facts straight here. This renaming thing is something that Cryptic programmed for the game they created, City of Heroes/Villains. It is not something you're likely to see in GW unless ArenaNet decides to dedicate programming time to letting someone change their name and all the problems that come with it (making sure dedicated items are changed over in the database etc..).
For City of Heroes/Villains you can:
ArenaNet doesn't have specific seperate play servers so they'd not need to offer such a service, but I seriously doubt they'd take time from making GW2 to create such a feature unless they were sure they could suck a vast chunk of money from the current fanbase.
On another topic, don't you hate when people bring up that lame excuse that ArenaNet is too busy working on GW2 to go in and fix bugs in the current game when they themselves stated they had 3 dedicated teams working on different chapters and holiday stuff? So they need all 3 teams to work on gw2 and can't afford to have a team work on errors? Riiiiight.
For City of Heroes/Villains you can:
- Check to see if a name is taken at character creation for free.
- Pay to have a character renamed (us 10 bucks or so)
- Pay to have a character and everything they own moved to another server for about the same price (us 10 bucks or so)
- If your name is taken on the new server you get a free rename.

More Outrage
hehe.
Sounds like good business to me. Not that I need to partake but there are some I`m sure would even at that price especially when GW2 comes out and to gain the favour from the the HoM you need to be a decendent and carry the name forward.
Serves them right for making a stupidly named char, oh wth live with it or pay up lol.

NCSoft, by no means, would allow A-Net to have any sort of cash crunch, but there definitely will be pressure applied to find new ways to generate revenue in the short run (e.g. direct online sales of GW:EN and the related mission pack incentives, expanded unlock packs, etc.).

this feature probably won't happen, ever.

I don't know how people are associating features from a totally separate, different game and then believing that they will somehow show up in some other game.
First of all, Guild Wars is created by ArenaNet, which in turn is published by NCSoft. City of Heroes/Villains is created by Cryptic Studios, which in turn is published by NCSoft. The difference is equal to a movie director versus a movie producer. Just because somebody has the same publisher doesn't mean that they have to share any features at all. Madden 2008, Half-Life 1, and World of Warcraft, for instance, all share the exact same publisher.
Second, subscription-based online games have been offering for-pay features like this for a long time. It all comes down to the demand from the community, and more importantly, just how much money are they willing to pay for such a feature. Moving characters to a different server or renaming characters is not a particularly new feature to any online game (heck, Everquest has it), but it's never been cheap. You can come up with whatever theories you want about the cost, but that's been this way for years.
Guild Wars, having no online fees, probably doesn't have enough resources to support that kind of feature. Or maybe ANet just doesn't want to deal with the hassle. Whatever the reason, it's been available for a long time, but ANet isn't offering it in the store. It will probably never show up as a result. Even if they did, people would start whining about how much it cost (as people are already doing) or rant about how they "deserve" free character renames.

I have no need of this. I think my names out extensively before I name characters. Modified Latin (designed to emulate High Gothic) names for the win.
