Single or multiple main characters
Ivan Aidrann
Opinion on which is better, using a single or multiple main pve chars?
Honestly ive been back and forth on this. I used to play on a single character, my mesmer, played him for 900 hours till the new title updates started coming in, after which i deleted him.
I then started 3 new chars, one for each campaign. With the goal to get each char all the titles specific to his/her home continent.
That came to an end when i decided i wanted to start my own storyline for my chars, to really get into the role-playing of the role-playing game. It went well, though i eventually only made 3 chars for the storyline since I reeeeally dont want to do the campaigns over again. But this is working quite nice for me. Three characters of which i have a main one, and 2 i quite often play with. Each character with a title which describes his role in this mini story of mine.
Many reasons can be given, multiple chars for better farming, single for title-hunting etc.
So now youve got my reasoning why i use multiple characters in pve. What do the rest of you prefer. One main char, multiple main chars, or like mine where i have 1 main char and 2 other?

I have one main character, and thats my mesmer. I hunt titles on him. And i do have two other characters, a monk for elite missions and GvG and a starting necromancer just for casual PvE.
Im thinking about a fourth character, a dervish pimped out for PvP. The rest of my slots are open.

I have one main (title hunter) and two others. I don't even remember when i played the others... Currently only main and pvp.

One warrior, I want to be paragon but no way I'm going to start a second character and do the titlegrind again. Plus paragons are nerfed to hell anyway.

Multiple characters are great in my opinion, since they give a wider variety of professions to play with, and help you to understand the roles and capabilities of other professions.
I myself have an Elementalist as my primary character, who has been played with for over one third of my total playtime. The rest has been spent on any one of my 13 remaining characters. I have a couple of mules and couple of duplicate professions.

You'd probably have more fun with multiple chars. I however haven't been able to, still the same game for me no matter what proffession I play. Not to mention it'll be quite a long time to fill your Hall of Monuments for each one.

My ele is my main but I have nine characters all fully equiped with builds and armor. I only go for titles on Ele but just perfecting the rest of my guys before I delete him to start again and get survivor ^^.
wu is me
lol i rage quit pve after losing my survivor several times -_-
But every now and then i lose another survivor -___________________-
but i do have 1 character that i didn't delete =P just to get hard mode =], and was too far down the story line anyway
edit: oh yea and i would definetly pick more characters... Im not one for monogamy

I have a number of characters that have protector of all campaigns, but I have 2 main characters.
My first main is my warrior who has a number of max titles. Warrior is the profession I like to play most so he has over 1/2 of the time spent on my account.
My second main is my ranger. An R/A primarily because I do like melee, but I like to be range often too for a change of pace. Not got many titles on the ranger as I find it enough of a challenge to get them on one character. I think it'll be a long time 'til I'm motivated to do them all again on a second character.
I also created a second warrior and ranger to play through the game just for fun but my first 2 are always the main. Everything else I just play from time to time if I feel like a change.
Why not just 1 main character? because I like versatility. I like to be able to change depending on how I feel, yet not spread my efforts around too many characters that it feels like too much work to do everything on all of them.

Personally, I have one character I would assuredly call main and that would be my Elementalist, first character I created 6 months ago and have played through Nightfall and GWEN. (Recently got Factions, and have been spending most of my Elementalist time grinding in GWEN.)
However, I also have 4 other PvE characters:
A Prophecies Ranger,
A Prophecies Warrior, (HUGE mistake making TWO Prophecies characters within the space of two weeks.)
A Nightfall Dervish,
A Factions Ritualist. (Tied Second fav PvE so far. Playing Restoration Rit with humans is fun! )
However, I would in no way consider grinding the hell out of the rest of these characters to get titles, they're just there for fun and variety. (+Elite dungeons and Elite skills. )

I have one of every profession except para and derv, I only play PvE. I would switch between them often until titles starting becoming important, and now I only play my warrior for title wh0ring, and my sin for fun. Now I only touch upon my mes for ABs, and my others for farming. 3700 hours total, 1800 on my war. If they made treasure account-based...
Ugh, the goal of getting 30 maxed titles is what really made me drop everyone but two.

I have one main that i play more then my others but i do enjoy playing all my alts. I dont really care to much for all these grindy titles i am quite happy to pick a char and have fun playing them. What ever comes there way will do for me. Or if i go out of my way to aquire a certain armour will proberly be the only time i may grind out a certain faction.

I'm random.. with the start of nightfall I finally had enough slots to have a character for each primary profession. Sure, some get played less than others, but.. if I don't feel like playing a certain class, i can switch to another character rather than simply not playing.
I still have a favorite class, but after hours and weeks of just one class, you get bored of it and need a break

I think you were always intended to have one roleplay character to hunt skills and items and lots of pvp's.
GW:EN made this a little more mandatory, because maxing titles on ten different characters = treadmill into the infinite.

I have my three main, warrior, monk, and paragon that I've brought through all three games. Originally I was just focused on playing the warrior and monk which really gives you a different perspective on the game from the front and backlines. After abusing paragon heroes I really came to enjoy what the profession brings to the table and rolled one myself. I originally was just going for titles on my warrior but paragon makes everything so easy that doing all of it again has been a lot of fun.

I have 1 character of each class, ranger is my main with 11 titles, necro has 5 titles, and all others have protector of their birth continent.
Playing multiple characters is fun, when you play with friends you can always pick the one needed to the team. When it comes to titles, it's really impossible to manage more than 1, so normally you end up having a main which becomes title hunter.
Anyway, for GW2 I'd like to see this idea of classes totally changed. I like the concept of primary/secondary class, but I would like to have a universal character who can play every primary.
To clarify, you create a new character and choose race, sex and appearance, and an initial primary+secondary combination, let's say W/Mo
Then at a certain point of progress, you can learn elementalist skills, and change your primary to elementalist. Same for all other classes.
Currently the primary attribute is inherent to the class.
It could be tied to the armor instead. So if with your character you want to play ele and have energy storage, you'd only need to buy an elementalist armor.
In this way you could play the same character through the whole game (and so you would have no problem to choose which one you consider primary), and change your primary profession just by switching armor, so you could also be able to experiment different playstyles and play the role needed by the team.

Olim Chill
I only have time to focus on one main character. On occasion I'll dabble with secondary characters, just to get a taste of other professions.

I go thru phases with my chars. I have multiple and play them all almost exclusively for periods of time. For instance, I created a Sin and played nothing but that char until I got my L3 Survivor, but have hardly touched her since. I played nothing but my Ranger during the Tombs heyday. When Nightfall came out, I played thru the entire campaign with my shiney new Derv. Since GW:EN, I've played nothing but my Warrior (which is my second oldest char). My oldest char is a Necro which I've all but retired. The list goes on. Probably the reason I don't have a KoaBD title...and never will.
WinterSnowblind
My Warrior is my main character.
But more recently I've started playing as others a lot more, I really love my mesmer, at the moment. But whenever we get new content, I always do it with my Warrior first.

I've always had 6 main characters that I like to play and finish story line + quests + bonuses etc with.
One character that is the title hunter + any HM stuff that I do.
When GW:EN came out, I found it hard to do all those titles and Dungeons with all characters so I'm still doing stuff with my Mesmer.
I think once I feel like I'm done eveything with her then I will start GW:EN again with other characters but I won't max any rep points with or even get rep points for some of them or even finish all dungeons.
Whenever I want to do a dungeon or someone needs help then I can grab my Mesmer and do that with.

My first ever character (a Warrior) is my main. I have 14 max titles on him, the most recent being Guardian of Elona.
I do play my other characters... well, I'm in the process of getting every other character to Legendary Survivor. I've got 2 already with 3rd and 4th on the way. (Yes, for HoM.)
My first Legendary Survivor is my Para and I've got the 3 Protectors and still haven't died.
It's fun to play with more than one character, although for max titles... not so fun.
Especially for Hard Mode titles.
Oh, I've got 10 PvE characters. 1 for each profession.

I'm the same like most of you, I have 1 main (my first one i ever made) so no survivor title for him. and 9 others (1 of each prof) and 1 pvp mule.
I title grind for that 1 and the other chars i just beat each chapter for each and get all the elite skills and regular ones and maybe all the towns too, not much else, except the odd time when people need a certain class i can change quickly.

heh, well I have 15 lvl 20 characters, all have beaten at least 1 campaign. Most have completed 3 and a couple have completed GW:EN. IMO I enjoy being able to take spells of playing 1 type of character for a while. Typically what happens is that I play 1 specific character through a campaign once it is released then move on to another, once they are all complete, or all that I can tolerate through a campaign, I revisit several of them. I typically will pick one and play it for a while, get bored and go to another, just gives me greater variety. I am not a total title wh0re, but I do have 7 max titles on one of them, and 4 on a couple others. I wouldnt want to only be able to play 1 specific class all the time in pve, it gets old

I am once again in my phase of making just one main.
So I decided to make a completely new mesmer - since the fun for me is building up a character. So this boy is planning on doing pretty much everything he can.
Although we'll see how long this will last - since I might find myself missing my necro to much! The ritu I can live without because the reason why I enjoyed him the most is getting more and more trashed with each update (protection spirits that is!) - but living without the necro and especially Soul Reaping might be a bit harder.
I still use my other characters though - as storage and as a way to make some gold - I mean if the chests do get refilled - I might as well visit them!

Playing alts is handy as well since the introduction of heroes. As you can open up more skills for them as your alts gain them. im finding it quite handy for building up a nice selection of abilities for the heroes to be equipped with.
All my chars are L20 but i still have way to much questing to do on most of them all. They all at diffrent stages throughout the 4 campaigns.

I used to play multiple characters a lot but ever since the introduction of titles I've been concentrating more and more on a single character both consciously and subconsciously... not necessarily a good thing.
Aera Lure
I have all but assassin. I love having the variety of characters. Its a lot of fun. Thing is, heroes not being cross account, titles and severe storage issues have relegated all but my monk to storage characters and I'm quite sad about that.
Not much I can do though. All the armors, head pieces and weapons for my monk fill almost all of storage, with a few slots left for moving items around. She carries required items and quest objects, having space to actually pick things up. That leaves the others full to every slot of their own items and then storage of a particular thing - extra runes and weapons for different hero builds, some insignias and inscriptions, some collectors things. As it is I have had to ditch a lot of stuff. Its a monumental hassle and cannot multiply it by nine. Only real reason I dont get out other characters anymore. I seriously have no idea what Anet is thinking with the storage limitation and issues caused by armor sets and heroes. Solve storage and I'd actually play my other characters, even given titles.

10 Chars, one of each profession.
But I play only my Necro nowadays. As all I do for the next two years is to grind for the Hall of Monuments.
There are too few account based things, and title grind rewards focus on one. And I am not really keen on doing the same mission with the other chars over and over.
I hope GW2 will have more account-based stuff or ideally totally get away from the cancer called titles that became the focus of GW1 nowadays.
To quote DFrost
Exactly.
I think the insight and fun you get when playing another class gets lost when you focus on one char only. But you are basically disadvantaged when you spread your pve skill title grind or title grind of any kind over many chars, sadly enough.

Government Flu
I have one primary character with 3 secondaries. My primary enjoys the only suit of obsidian armor plus several high end weapons, along with my most prestige titles. My other characters have at the very least elite armors with green weapons and either an account based title or a protector title.
Nonetheless, having my other 3 characters allows me to shift gears every once in a while to keep things a bit more interesting. Not only that, but one of my secondary characters has amazing farming synergy with my primary, so I have several options on how to get gold.

I used to have a character of almost all professions, until I had a burn-out and deleted all of them but my main. That felt really refreshing, and now all title-hunting is concentrated on my main, the new ones are just leveling up and unlocking skills. I don't like to grind a lot, so doing all the stuff again with 8-10 characters was overwhelming me. But now I can concentrate on the essential: my ranger.
Jetdoc
I have five characters that represent all 10 classes. I focus solely on one character at a time (i.e. taking them completely through a campaign, including doing all side quests) before I think about touching another.
For me, that keeps the game fresh...

I originally wanted to have one character for each profession, but there are too many professions and not enough time for me, at least.
I used to have a sorta "1st string" of 3 or 4 characters -- a ranger, warrior, monk, and necro, but sadly real life has gotten too busy to let me play all of them regularly (not to mention my other "2nd string" chars). I've realized that with what little time I have to play now, I can either be decent/good with one character/profession/set of titles/HoM, or be mediocre/average with several. So now I basically just play my ranger -- he's always been my "true" main and favorite.
Maybe if/when I max everything I want to for him, I can then work on my others, but for the foreseeable future my other characters are just for messing around with when I want to try something different, or storage.

I have one of each profession but my main favorites are my monk and spear assassin. Never had Kind of a Big Deal on any character yet but I'd like to someday.
Neo Nugget
I have toooo many lvl 20's :P.
I usually play 1 when i feel like a change of pace, at that rate i will never have a full HoM.

I currently have 7 characters on the go. The dominant character is my Mesmer, and he's the character I put the majority of my efforts into. They other characters all get their turn when I fancy a change of pace or when the situation calls for something completely different.
Bazompora
I only have 1 main character, because of 2 reasons:
- attaining perfection is an eternal process and thus too long to start over;
- my main character is me, and from that RP point of view, it makes no sense to have more than 1.
Painbringer
I go through stages My Ranger has the titles but I rather play my Memser and my Necro and my Rit. I also always have a empty slot to create play kill create play kill I like the noob areas too
Spellforge
I only PvE.
I've never deleted a character
I started with a Prophercies Warrior/Ele , got as far as ring of fire and got bored
Started a Monk/Necro and Ranger/Mesmer - Took them through prophercies alternating. Doing a Mission with one then replaying it with the other - never more than 2 missions apart. The Monk got to Ring of Fire - The ranger to Thunderhead Keep.
Factions came out - created a Canthan Necro - Finnished factions with that necro , took Necro to Tyria - Got to Forge.
Took my other 3 Chars all through Factions - All Finished it.
Took 3 characters all through Nighfall , Monk only one not to finish it - She's in Vabbi
Warrior and Necro both done GWEN - Ranger is a third through it , Monk not yet started.
I'm most enjoying playing my Warrior and the Necro and getting PvE skills for them - I'll probably also do the ranger but it gets harder to want to do my monk.
At some point I really should finish off prophercies with one of my chars (intend to with warrior and Necro) I don't do titles except seeker of wisdom for the monk , thought it would suit. The monk gets all the gold everyone else gets to ID them.
I intend on only having the Warrior and Necro contribute to any characters created in GW2

focus on one character tank///when america doesnt have favor then i farm uw like a farm bot with ele for kicks
pkodyssey
8 characters, missing an Assassin and a Paragon. I play 3 regularily but focus on my Ranger for all the title tracks and gold ID's
