You don't need to grind the titles to advance the stroyline i believe, only if you want to use the skills, crafters etc. So if you don't want to grind, don't. You can do it with one toon and craft consumables if you want them and use them on any character. There are plenty of other places to craft weapons and armour. People did fine before EOTN PvE only skills, so i'm sure you can manage without them. I kind of forget about them anyway since they don't fall under one of my profession skill lines.

I am a little bitter because I finished EotN before I knew of or knew the importance of the books. Then when I went back to buy the books completed, all but one of my toons were only given a blank book. So of the 6 toons that had completed EotN, only 1 got a completed book in the deal. That being said, most of the other toons are only at 3 level of any of the title. The one I am most interested is Norn, but even at the most optimistic point gathering scenario, to get to a decent level, say 6 in Norn, I would need to put a lot of time in grinding.
Norn Points_____Level
_8,000__________3
16,000__________4
26,000__________5
40,000__________6
56,000__________7
So based on say a mid level 3, 12,000 pts., it would take the following HM books
40,000-12,000 = 28,000/3000=9.333 books (say 9 books) to get up to level 6.
At about 45-60 minutes per book, including team changes and set up for each quest, this would mean for ONE TOON it would take 7 to 9 hours of just doing those quest to gain enough points to reach a decent Norn level of 6! MAN I HATE GRINDING.

It should take 1.5 hours to get 15k points by doing all of the missions except Destruction's Depths, Warband of Brothers, and The Elusive Golemancer (they take too much time to be worth it in the time:reputation ratio).
Each run also nets you 450 norn points from the mission.
That means 15.5 hours to get to level 10 (max) from 0 rep.
3.8 hours to get to level 6 (40000 points).
And that's assuming you start off with 0 points.
For the fastest times, determine what rank you need and get enough books for that rank. Repeat a mission with the same build so you don't need to set up anything for each of those books.
So it's not that bad unless you max multiple characters.

I did:
2.5 books to max out my ebon
1 normal dungeon book + snowman farming (during double weekend) to max dwarven
path to revelations farming for norn(this was before books were buffed, and i just got like 10k+ pts a run in the double weekend anyways so this was easy, plus i wanted r8 ursan before HM came out)
and for asura, i did 1 heroes handbook, and 60k rep from hm dungeon book=MMMMMMMMMM
