How do you help new GW players?
Saphrium
Do you give free items or free runs?
Help them in missions?
Teach them about game mechanics?
Give them tips on what to do next?
Help them find the information they are looking for?
Tour them through the UI and basic controls?
Tell them the philosophy behind a skill, a build or a profession?
Let's gather the best ideas of the GW community.

I simply ignore them
TheRaven
I'll give them gameplay tips. I never give free stuff or runs to newbs, but I'll help them get started in other ways.
All those idiots in town just spamming "Gimme 1k for armor/50g to open storage/100 for materials!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I just ignore. If they are incapable of earning the gold needed without begging then they are too stupid to be playing this game.

I tend to refer them to the wiki and occasionally answer questions. That's about the limit of my interaction with anyone that's not in my guild or on my friends list, actually, and that's fine by me.

Depends on their attitude and just how little I'm willing to put up with it.

I hate beggars.
If I'm on a character that needs to do something the newbie needs to do, then I'll teach them the ropes along the way.
But beggars get nothing except rudeness from me.

I have very little useful advice to give to someone I run across randomly. If they're in guild, or approach in some decent manner, and show that they are willing to listen, then I have no problem playing with them or sharing an advice.
For random encounters however, I avoid and ignore them by passion. It just works out better this way for both of us.
The annoying ones however get filtered by disabling of local chat and through use of ignore option.

I do all of the above from the OPs post. As long as they don't ask for money.
Nian
Everytime I have ever helped someone do a mission or whatever it hasn't been worth it. Every single one never bothered to thank me and would just rather whine me to help them in the next mission too like I was going to play the game for them. I don't do that anymore. Maybe I'm just unlucky. If I see someone politely asking for help or a question I'd be more than happy to answer.
Because...when I started out someone actually bothered to help me out. They gave my crappy mending wammo a good axe to use and gave me some good tips on gameplay. That really helped me out and made me want to continue!
I never feed the storage beggars. The spam annoys the hell outta me and giving them money to shut up only makes sure that they do it again next time.

I help them if I'm not busy. Yesterday I helped a few people in Pre. I did leave one guy who told me I was dumb for staying in Pre and going for, even after I explained that I was doing it for the Hall of Monuments. I also answer questions in towns. I was in Ascalon City the other day and someone kept asking where the merchant was and so I said hold down ALT and run around until you find him. People seemed surprised by this information and proclaimed me an "expert" GW player.
I get angry when I meet a new player thats in a guild and no one helping them. What's the point of being in a guild if they don't improve your overall GW experience? I recruit in Pre and I've found that if you really help people there they will stay with you.

powering them through missions/giving them free stuff is the oppiste of help, i give words of wisdom tbh . And answer their questions.
SuperDave
I also give beggars the cold shoulder. I don't mind helping newbies when they're sincere, and really appreciate your help. I also don't mind helping with missions and quests etc. It also depends on how difficult the task is they are trying to accomplish. The biggest lesson I teach them is that wiki and guru is your friend.
I try and steer clear of those that take your arm when you offer a hand.

I go to Sardelac and give away weapons with lower reqs (blue & purple). They are not great, but much better than a low-level can get in Ascalon. I'll also give away the collector drops from that area that are required for collector armor. That way, I'm helping them to help themselves.
I also constantly tell players about the wikis and guru when they need information.
I'm not big on giving gold to those asking for it. Once in Piken, a player was asking for 28g for something, someone gave it to him. Later when I mapped back to collect the quest reward, I landed in a different district and there was the same player, once again asking for 28g. So I asked in "All Chat" if he was a professional beggar. He left, but I'm sure just to continue his begging elsewhere.
Of course, that was offset by the player at Shing Jea during a festival who asked to borrow 50g and came back to return it.

I turn off Local chat, and put panhandlers on Ignore. The only newbies I'm routinely nice to are guild members, and RL family and friends.

- Try not to yell at them too much.
- Set them straight when they ask stupid questions.
- If they act like they genuinely need help, then help them.

I only help new players when they deserve it. Beggars are a no-no.

I'll answer questions if I know the answer and if I help on missions, I will leave my drops for them to have.
But if they as for materials or gold, I just tell them I don't have any at this time.
I made my way w/o begging for gold or materials, so I know they can too.

I mainly stand (or spin) in shing jea offering help for just about anything, normally questions though
(if you ever see the beetle of shingjea feel free to ask)

I give them information. No one "needs" money. I'll even give them tips on the best ways for a casual player to make money.
There's a difference between needing money and needing information. The one needing money is just lazy and greedy.

I've given quite a few runs to people to droks and a few other places (all free) and I'll also answer questions that people pm me or give them that 20 gold or whatever to open storage (not like its that much money heh).

I try to help any new players out.. giving items or just helping them in general.. but as far as giving items away.. it's really hard to tell a real new player vs a old veteran player just looking for free items playing as a new player.. >.>
blood4blood
Answer Q's, very limited free runs (i.e. from Ascalon to LA for Halloween), occasionally give away items to new players (i.e. purples in pre-searing, imperfects and/or mods to people in PUG's that seem decent but ill-equipped), partner with people who need to get their rez sigs in pre-, open the gate to the northlands for free sometimes, etc.
I don't give out free money or materials, I don't give out free items to beggars (I offer free items to people I pick, not people who ask for them).

Help them in missions? Sure! As long as they appreciate it. As said before, if I trust them Teach them about game mechanics? Definitly Give them tips on what to do next? Yep Help them find the information they are looking for? Yep, usually ranges from quest info to build help Tour them through the UI and basic controls? Most new players understand these right off the bat, but I help them with stuff like that aswell. Usually it's something small like how to talk in different chats. Tell them the philosophy behind a skill, a build or a profession? Only if I >>REALLY<< understand the skill/build/profession they are intrested in. |
Noanoa
If someone asks me something, I usually try to reply (and relatively politely, even!), I even answer to all those "how u get the shiny hands" (CE) questions. For example, directing people to places where they'll get max armor, or collectors if they're obviously poor.
Every time I've got the Time Is Nigh quest I will ferry at least one player to the Docks for free, and sometimes even ask them to do the same when it's their turn to finish that quest. Spread the love, etc.
I will generally try to be polite to everyone, but obvious beggars and idiots I'll ignore automatically. It's no use feeding their bad habits >:D.

If I see that someone is lost, I generally help out by giving the right info or direction, or if I'm heading in the same direction, a run to wherever.
Used to hand out weapons as well, but I rarely hang around outposts and cities these days as there's just too much to do in-game.

I used to type the answer, now im just telling them to press f10 and use the wiki
Viruzzz
usually i don't help them with anything.
GW is a very easy game to play, there's no exp loss for dying, no armor maintenance cost, or anything like that. basically you can't go backwards, only forwards (at varying speed)
anyone who needs 50g for storage has other characters, so he's not new. and therefor doesn't need anything, he's just lazy
same thing with armor really. In prophecies you go through pre-sear before you need to buy armor, so you should have enough gold when you get to it.
in factions and nightfall you will get a lot of gold form quests to use on it.
the only ones i will help are the ones asking questions about certain game-mechanics or UI features. or how to progress in the main campaign if they are stuck

I answer questions when people ask. I find it irritating that so many pop off with rude and false answers. It is easy to answer a question, if you don't want to then it is even easier to not say anything. If I have information then I am happy to share.
I sometimes help with missions, always with rez sig and will sometimes show people where to find things (especially in pre).
I used to give away weapons that were not worth selling but too good to throw away that a newbie could use but I found that most times it is more hassle than it is worth. Still sometimes I am optimistic and give it a try. I am glad if I can help someone that really needs it. The ones that beg or keep asking for more get ignored.
I never give away money to strangers...ever. It is too easy to go play the game and get money for your items and gold to pick up. I hate beggars both in real life and in game.

I PUG a lot on some of the trickier missions and sometimes respond to those "can someone help me with a quest" requests.
I share knowledge and advice when asked.
When I'm helping on a quest, I'll generally give them my drops, except greens, golds, purples and rune armors, of course.
I'll give common crafters materials/collectors materials away in small amounts - if someone's asking for 3 cloth or 7 dust, for example.
I don't give money to people.

Send them to Guru lol so they can join the rest of the clueless people
jammerpa
Every now and then I'll take half decent gold weps and hand them out to low lvl players in Ascalon. I've also given away some of the cheap mini pets that I've dedicated in my HoM.
MMSDome
tell them good luck.
I started on my own and didnt have much help from the 2 guys that told me to buy the game so I believe that everyone should give a kick in their own asses to play. Tell them to shut the hell up if they sit in town asking for free gold and mats.

I don't interact much with others in town, but when I help it's usually in the form of taking them through missions, giving them runs to key towns, giving basic pointers about game mechanics, etc. I don't do gold giveaways, but if I have some old weapons in my inventory that I don't want then I'll be happy to help start them out on their gear.
CyberMesh0
Depends on the willingness of the player to listen and accept the fact that they might be wrong on some things.
Spammers of any kind may as well not exist imo, they go completely under my radar.

when I get a bunch of the useless collector items, I trade them in for a bunch of max collector weapons and go to Ascalon or somewhere and give them to low levels. Same goes for max white/blue/purple Chaos Axes or FDS's I get in FoW that are merchant fodder for me. If I'm running an Alliance member, I'll fill up the party with people who need the run, take them along for the ride. I've been bored and lent my max Heros when in low ends of the game.
