Those areas were hard before people had figured them out, and before the power creep. They're still challenging if you only use core skills.

Well, Lich was a pretty hard boss to get to.
but he really wasn't that hard to kill.
Mallyx wasn't that hard, just alot of kill, turn back, do it again.
But then again, I did it with germans...
They are amazing at this game.

After playing through some more HM, I'd have to say Duncan the Black or Fendi Nin we're pretty dumb. The other major bosses have ways to beat them easily, Duncan has 1000000 HP and is dumb, and Fendi is just bleh.
