wintersday hats

...LAWL. I had such an issue with it I PMed her. It's rt Vabbian. I kept searching through all the mes and ele armors on wiki and gave up.

Well, after getting both (finally), I must say, I like them both. I think the biggest issue with the ice crown is that people were psyched about getting a nice glowing headpiece that [at least closely] matched the submitted art, and feel let down. On its own, without comparison to what "could have been," it's pretty good, IMO. The fur piece on it is kinda 'meh,' though.

The flower/candle thing is kinda cute on some female characters, I guess. Design-wise, it's pretty good, too. I like how the flames on the candles flicker when you move. Nice touch.

For the record, I believe that was a joke

As soon as you wear a helmet or hat, there is just one haircut, like the helmet forcing a certain way to wear the hair. That would be much better than bald or some kind of straw.

Should have just reused the ones from last year and saved themselves the emberassment and half hour.

Here is the thing.
I don't mistake those few pixels that we call our characters for any kind of a version of me. (I am in NO way saying that you ARE!)
Would I ever wear a tank top with golden piercing nipples of doom, a platemail skirt and a flowery crown in RL?
Hell no! My chest is to hairy to be able to pull it off!
It does make me smile to see it on the characters I play in a game though.
And at the end of the day - that's good enough for me.
Plus it's sweet we finally got something different then the Coke-Santa version that everyone is feeding us! I mean how many people would EVER get to know that possibly not EVERYONE is running around with a red hat or that some people would rather eat Rudolph then sing about it!

So the hat made me smile and made me learn something new.
For a videogame - I'd say that is pretty darn sweet!

(And in NO way am I saying you should hate it! Hell - I hate tons of things in GW. I just don't hate this one.)

These hats suck imo, the contest was a waste of time and money if Anet didn't plan on using the submitted winners art and worse yet the ice crown was butchered....from a player of 2 years and has been to all the holiday events...this is the worst I have seen. I had my 1st acct banned and I still l am playing but when I saw these....I wondered to my self why in the heck am I still playing if ima get stuff that had no effort put into it (mainly the flower hat...) like these?

People claiming "laziness" aren't looking at the wreath crown very closely. It's effeminate, certainly, but it's probably the most detailed and carefully crafted hat they've ever produced. It's fantastic on cute female characters. If they'd come up with an equally strong contender for guys it would be all good.

Maybe something like a viking helmet, with blood all over the horns. That manly enough for you?

Also, the little candles are cool, they move when you move.

I really like the hats this year. Can't see why people are complaining about it.

As was pointed out by another poster, the ice crown looks exactly like the glacial gloves. No coincidence here. And for those of you who expected a cute Grenth crown with fur around the rims.... come on!

If you follow the forums at all you would know that whatever ANET does people on the forums are going to whine about something. I include myself when I say people, so don't use that as an excuse to flame

People are complaining cuz after all the other hats we get a rip off ice crown and a boque of flowers with candels (which idk how it relates to the holiday). I really don't know how the glacial gauntlents and the ice crown look alike...glacial gauntlets are not ROCKS they are ice and the "ice" crown is ROCKS...big difference now maybe....just maybe..if they would have used the ORIGINAL contest submitted art they might match....and I never thought grenth would have a "ice" crown I thought dwayana would have the contest winners hat....but well I was fooled and somewhat let down again by anet.

The Wreath Crown (Dwayna) is excellent, nice detail. If it does not look good on your character, um... do not wear it!

The Ice Crown (Grenth) based on the winner of the Guild Wars Wintersday 2007 art contest, is so Grenth! Not pretty white spikes, but gray ice, the kind you see along side the road days after the snowstorm when everyone goes back to school/work.

FYI, it is a coincidence. Nian designed the original ice crown, NOT the ANet design team... and WITH fur trim. Someone at ANet took it off. That's why so many are offering their condolences to Nian... because NIAN was the designer... in case you were wondering.

The Ice Crown looks nice in a scarecrow-ish kind of way.

Dwayna's Wreath is really quite well done, very detailed and colorful; the flckering candles, which looked kind of lame in the picture on the wiki, actually look pretty good. They even look good on male chars, in a "ya, I know I look sooooo gay in this hat but I don't care" kind of way.

But if you really think about it, it is all pointlessness if not BS. 0 AR, WHAT can you do with it besides wearing it while afk, chatting with friends or pve(in which case it will still take sometime for people to realize you're fancy new hat and you'd be taking slightly more damage, depends where you're). If they have the AR set according to the class that wears it, then sure, I'd love to wear either(but Grenth more ) of these hats when I participate in a GvG match, HA match (or whatever) where it is both useful AND cool to replace these same old head sets that's on my mesmer for 2 years.

It's good for Anet to think new things up, but they should update the old ones more, cause any of the new little things they come up will be merely a desert to the players. But updating the old things can actually keep things interesting.

Just off the top of my head(heh, pun intended), festival hats make great helmets for solo-farming with [skill=text]Spirit Bond[/skill].

On topic, I think the wreath crown is very pretty. But it is also effeminate, and I am male. I loved Nian's design for the Ice Crown; her artwork was just amazing. I don't think I'll fault ANet for the Ice Crown we have given the limited time they had. It was nice of them to recognize player designs for the event.

I must take some time to comment on the hats, as my emotions over Wintersday 2007 have been wavering back and forth, from "two new quests is the best they can come up with using a festival team" to "cool hats" to "TERRIBLE HATS" to wanting to knock Gaile out to the hats aren't too bad to what a horrible Wintersday and I miss Dragon Festival 2007 to this.

When I first watched my brother pick up the Ice Crown, despite my displeasure at the lack of two hats this year, I thought it was nicely made and looked pretty faithful to the original and the "hair" thing was an inventive idea. Then, of course, when I realized what they'd done to the ice texture, I was a little less satisfied. However, I could live with that if it wasn't for the way the "hair" was done. I'm sure someone has a way to explain this otherwise, but whatever it's supposed to represent, that gray line around the fur/hair area is just lazily done. I don't expect this to be fixed, but I'm trying to make it one of my last hopes for ANet festival-wise (I don't expect anything more than minipets out of the third birthday celebration now.)

My first glance at the Wreath Crown made me go "whoa" because for a few seconds it looked like the character I saw it on was a ginger with a bad haircut. That quickly faded, at least, since masculinity is not my issue with the hat. I liked it a fair amount when I looked at the front of it. The flowers were well detailed and the candles were a nice touch (the glitch people speak of does not bother me either as it is barely visible). However, when I swung around to the back of my character, where I find myself looking most of the time as I play Guild Wars, I was greeted by a site worse than the quality of the Scarecrow hat from Halloween (not to digress, but what was up with that? Incredibly low quality compared to the other hats, even from 2005, and it clips through most of my characters' armor and my Dervish's shoulder). There is some poor quality...branch...ring thing sticking out, and it looks fairly ugly. In addition, the lack of flowers on the side I look at the most makes the hat seem barren and boring. I'll make sure to get a screenshot of these parts after I post this to clarify.

It was two new items. I don't mind them TOO much, but I know ANet could have done better. They had plenty of designs sent in by the players, too, so I don't see why they couldn't have made two more. The people saying it's wrong to complain about free content need to realize that these free updates are the kind of stuff that keeps people as customers, and the hat wasn't the only problem - stuff like lag and the polar bear fiasco are starting to show a lack in care from the team.

Important part to me if you don't read the rest of this:
Perhaps someone could make me feel a bit better about this by posting pictures of real-life items to explain the flaws I see in the two new hats. That is, the gray line around the hair in the ice crown and that weird thing sticking out of the back of the flower hat.

Lies. The Ice Crown is ugly. Nian's design is superior to what aNet released. It might have looked descent without the wig section hanging off it. Granted, yes. Peoples' expectations were raised due to Nian's excellent submission.

I missed the wintersday event and I was thinking... "ahh shucks, just missed out on the hats and some wintersday gifts."

Yes, I know that. But they also said it would not be an exact copy. (Her design for a holiday helm was chosen as the basis for one of this year’s two, special Wintersday gifts)

Exactly... logical to YOU. Good edit. I'm guessing that when you say stray you really mean straw? And if so, I'd love to know why you think that's straw. It's not the right color for straw, and it's finer than straw in texture. Some people think it's hair. I can't figure out what it is, but I don't think it's hair because there hasn't been a hairstyle like that since the 60s. I'm stumped. Furthermore, fur is logical to me because Grenth represents winter (the fur time of the year)... not Halloween or Autumn as straw would represent.

Btw, I read that page of course. I submitted an entry myself in the contest, but I can easily see why Nian's beautiful design won over mine. When I first saw it when the winners were first announced, my immediate reaction was "WOW! So clever."

I thought I would share something here: The thing that some people are calling a "wig" it is, in fact, a fur covering for the lower head and ears. The original concept would have left characters bald over the majority of their head. Therefore, the Ice Crown, as realized by the art team, include a fur "wrap" below the crown, a design element you may have seen in other traditional crown designs.

If it looks like a "blond wig," it is not a wig, nor is it blond. It is rather a pure white, but as such, it picks up the yellow lighting around it and may look blond.

Just thought you might want to know that.

*sigh* the hats just suck Gaile, and for that I can't blame you, but the dev's and such.. They never had a issue with bald heads before (Ie Santa hats, and Witches hat)

The Santa/Witch hat are actually the 2 only good hats imo Anet has issued. The later ones just spins outa control.
