Skin Color
netniwk
ranging from plain white to deep tan.
Kula
I like the melting pot paradigm.
Out of 10 slots, 5 of my characters are tanned/dark-skinned and the other 5 are light-skinned (2 of which are Asian).

Kahlindra
I play around with it until I find which tone looks nicest with that particular face. My first few characters were all really pale (not the blue-white pale, but they'd clearly never been on a beach), and then it got boring. My paragon and dervish just look better with dark skin, their features look more natural that way.

I try to avoid the default tone for pure realism in NF, although in the case of NF I have a slight tan as it seems thats the white-iest you can go!
Other campaigns I try to get a lighter tone going. But purely because I'm pail as a sheet anyway and I might aswell accep it

1. Choose the face I like most.
2. Choose the hair I like most.
3. Change hair and skin color until the eyebrows color match the hair color.
Done.

I go with what looks the best.
IMO:
- The lightest skin tone has never looked good at all. It's pretty sickly and only fit for necromancers.
- The dark skin tones looked very bad and unrealistic in Prophecies and Factions. The art team only really got them right in Nightfall.
- The second-from-lightest white and the tans have looked pretty good throughout.
- The Asian faces for Factions are very hit-or-miss. Some of them look very good, and some very bad.

all of my characters are moar tanned and only my paragon is dark skin
The Little Viking
I go for the more tanned skin tone. I dont care for the pale sickly looking color. Although i did go with a lighter skin tone on my monk...goes better with the blond hair.
Dark Paladin X
the only character I have that looks a bit tanned is my ranger, The Mudkipz Hunter.
Seef II
Tyrian Monk - deleted, would later be resurrected in Factions with more or less the same look
Tyrian Warrior - white. made her sort of like a Guinevere figure, only brunette
Tyrian Monk - I chose the "Asian" face and the hairstyle that looks like Lina's, so her skin color was chosen to match the more pale Asian colors.
Tyrian Necro - deleted, but I made her hair that bluish color and her skin pale white.
Tyrian Ele - deleted (throwaway char), average white man, tried to make him look least silly as possible (armor options were baeed back then) though.
Factions Monk - my mule, made him buff and bald and Asian looking.
Factions Mesmer - my "studious blonde bombshell" who wears Ancient armor
Factions Assassin - deleted, generic Asian guy look
Factions Rit - pale Asian guy, though I screwed up the body scale. He's huge.
NF Dervish - I tanned her down to fit in to Elona
NF Paragon - deleted, same as above though
NF Ranger - same as Dervish, went for the female hairstyle with the hair covering
PvP Factions Monk - generic Asian woman
Random PvP characters - as ridiculous as possible

Most black Americans are descended from people who were kidnapped and enslaved and told for hundreds of years that they were inferior human beings. Things have gotten so much better, but racism is still pretty common if quieter and more subtle. "Black is beautiful," black pride, and so on, are positive statements to counter those hundreds of years of defamation. We white folks, as a generalization, just don't need them.
Besides, there are white equivalents to black pride. Irish pride, Polish, Italian, etc. There really isn't such a thing as a white race except in relation to a black race, which is itself an artificial creation related to the aforementioned kidnapping and enslavement of the African peoples.
I find it interesting that the real life concepts of race don't seem to translate very well into the Guild Wars universe which has a very different history. There is no black and white and Asian, but Ascalonian, Krytan, Canthan, Elonan, etc. who can't always be identified by skin color.
Although it can be subjective, I can't think of anything in this thread that I would consider racist. I doubt that I'm alone, and that's probably why no one has spoken up.
But I'll say it (hopefully in the right context). White is beautiful. Black is beautiful. Asian is beautiful.
Just so you know where I'm coming from: I'm a eurasian man married to a black hispanic woman... in real life. In Tyria, Elona and Cantha, I have characters across the spectrum, but in Guild Wars it isn't race we're talking about, it's really just skin color.
Dervish Kid
mine are all light brown like me

Stranger The Ranger
Depends where they come from imo.
Tyria: White
Cantha: Tan'ish
Elona: Black
White Elonian chars = fail xD (my Dervish looks like a gangstah rapper though, without his hood (- -") )

Most of my characters are either the blackest or whitest possible.

Dark skinned monk/necro with light tatoos/scar pattern ^^
Lady Lozza
Depends on character. My NF characters are all darker skinned - they did such a good job with the faces and skin tones in NF (for the most part).
My ranger is quite tanned (she is from Factions).
My rit is a pale as I could get her, as is my Prophecies necro.
My ele and mes are pale but not white, and my monk has a nice pinky pink skin tone.

Zahr Dalsk
All palest. I find it the most aesthetically pleasing.
ValaOfTheFens
It depends on the demands of their professions and what armor I think would look great on them. I have 2 white toons, 3 black toons, 3 asian toons, and one gray one.
Magikarp
depends on the character/what cont. they hail from. i.e. my canthans are tan, my elonians are dark, my prophs are white.
Dwimmerlaik
Generally middle of the road, tanned-ish. Too pale hurts my eyes when i actually look at it in-game (they glow brightly), and too dark obscures features.
jon0592
all mine are azn because Factions is where I make all my characters, simply because its the fastest.
Shadowmere
Most of my characters are caucasian or asian ranging from moderately pale to nice n' tan. I do have some of both extremes though, my nf monk is very dark where my tyrian necro is insanely pale...she looks like a lightbulb when you move your mose over her.
Surena
Mostly caucasian ranging from the North to the South of Europe in pigmentation . My Paragon and Dervish look like Berbers (light skin, europoid) which fits the North African and Oriental theme. Anything else is Asian.
MithranArkanere
I choose first the face I like most, then the hair that I like most, and then I choose hair and skin color to make the eyebrows match the hair color.
I don't like my characters looking like Madonna in her old times, when she was a bottle-bleached-peroxide-fake blond, XD.
